The February 2018 Issue COPELAND 2017-18 WHAT'S HAPPENING AT Highlights: Fresh Starts, Friendships and Celebrating Culture! Hello Copeland Families, It is hard to believe that February is finally here! This is an exciting month with many opportunities to share our achievements and discuss student progress with families. Reports will be coming home on Feb. 7 th and this will be a great time to reflect on Term 1 and set goals for Term 2. Copeland is so fortunate to have such high quality programs and we are very proud of how our students have progressed this term. As January 31 st just passed we take time to value and recognize the importance of “Let’s Talk” and about mental health issues. We understand that this time of year can be difficult and taking time to support each other makes a difference. Copeland works hard to create many opportunities for students to self-regulate, be engaged and get involved at school. As you read through this newsletter you will see the range of clubs, teams and ongoing activities that allow us to keep our bodies and minds healthy. We are looking forward to February 9 th for the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics. Go Canada go, we wish you the best! Mrs. Rathbone and Mrs. Trafford Today we say “Good-bye” to two very special coyotesMr. Mece has worked very hard with our Grade 2 FI class this term. We will miss his flexibility and his good sense of humour. Ms. Anthony has been supporting many of our students throughout the school this term and her kindness will be missed. We certainly hope that both of our staff coyotes will return on a regular basis to supply here at Copeland! Bonne Chance and all the best!!! On that note, we would like to welcome back two other staff Coyotes! Ms. von Zittwitz has enjoyed her temporary position at the Board Office supporting students in many schools and now will return to her role here at Copeland! Mme. Mattar has finished her maternity leave and will now return to Copeland to teach our Grade 2 FI class. We are excited to have our coyotes return and hear all about their new adventures! Bienvenue and welcome home! "Hello, Goodbye!"

Hello Copeland Families,

It is hard to believe that February is finally here! This

our achievements and discuss student progress with

this will be a great time to reflect on Term 1 and set

such high quality programs and we are very proud of

how our students have progressed this term. As

January 31st just passed we take time to value and

recognize the importance of “Let’s Talk” and about

mental health issues. We understand that this time of

year can be difficult and taking time to support each

other makes a difference. Copeland works hard to

create many opportunities for students to

self-regulate, be engaged and get involved at school.

As you read through this newsletter you will see the

range of clubs, teams and ongoing activities that allow

us to keep our bodies and minds healthy. We are

looking forward to February 9th for the opening

Mrs. Rathbone and Mrs. Trafford

Today we say “Good-bye” to two very

special coyotes… Mr. Mece has worked

very hard with our Grade 2 FI class this

term. We will miss his flexibility and his

good sense of humour. Ms. Anthony has

been supporting many of our students

throughout the school this term and her

kindness will be missed. We certainly

hope that both of our staff coyotes will

return on a regular basis to supply here at

Copeland! Bonne Chance and all the

best!!! On that note, we would like to

welcome back two other staff Coyotes!

Ms. von Zittwitz has enjoyed her

temporary position at the Board Office

supporting students in many schools and

now will return to her role here at

Copeland! Mme. Mattar has finished her

maternity leave and will now return to

Copeland to teach our Grade 2 FI class.

We are excited to have our coyotes return

and hear all about their new adventures!

Bienvenue and welcome home!

Hello Copeland families!!

School Council will be hosting Copeland's annual movie nights on Wednesday, February 7th and Thursday, February 8th. We will be showing Disney's Coco, and look

forward to seeing families there. Don't forget to order popcorn, samosas and other snacks

via School Cash Online in advance. We are desperately looking for volunteers for these

two evenings. It is only with your help that these Movie Nights will be successful. If you

would like to volunteer at one or both movies nights (even for just a portion of the night),

please indicate on the movie admission form, email [email protected] or

leave a note for council in the office. We will continue to have our Pizza and Sub lunches

every Thursday at first nutrition break for the month of February. Pizza days are February 1st, 8th and 15th. Sub day is February 22nd. Vanilla heart and chocolate chip cookies

will be available for purchase on Valentine's Day. Please bring $1 on February 14th to

purchase your cookies!! See the flyer at the end of this newsletter. School Council is an

excellent way to be involved at your child's school, and to be active in planning many fun

and exciting events within the school. Please join us on Monday, February 26th from 6:30pm to 8:00pm for the next School Council meeting. Babysitting will be provided.

Students in grades 1-4 have been using their

understanding of simple machines (e.g., pulleys) and

strong and stable structures to create playground and

amusement park structures. Grade 1s used found

materials (e.g., cardboard, plastic cups, wool, tape...),

while the grade 2s. 3s, and 4s used cardboard and

make-do tools (screws, mini-saws, screwdrivers) to

design and build their structures. We were truly amazed

at the results from our young engineers! We will

continue our exploration of Google Slides and green

screen technology in the MST learning space as we

move into term 2.

Register today for Adult ESL or LINC classes

Peel Public Health recommends the following cold weather guidelines for

preventing cold-weather injuries: Reduce amount of time children (grade

8 and under) spend outdoors when the temperature is –20 degrees

Celsius or colder, with or without the wind chill.

Keep children indoors when the temperature is -25 degrees Celsius or

colder, with or without wind chill. Some medical conditions may increase

sensitivity to cold. Parents should consult their physician (Source:

Environment Canada).

Allow indoor breaks if children say they are feeling cold or during

extreme temperatures.

Ensure children are dressed warmly, covering exposed skin: insulated

boots, winter weight coats, mittens, hats, neck warmers.

Change wet clothing or footwear immediately.

Although these conditions are unlikely to occur during the school day,

ensure that all staff are able to recognize and treat symptoms of frostbite

and hypothermia. Given plenty of warm fluids to prevent dehydration.

When children are outside, be watchful for shivering or signs of

numbness in faces, ears, hands or feet.

Educate children in dealing with cold weather: drinking plenty of fluids,

dressing warmly, and recognizing signs of cold injury.

Stay warm this winter!

Do you know an adult that is interested in improving their English language skills for work, study or daily

life? Through the Continuing & Adult Education department, the Peel District School Board offers a wide

variety of English language classes that help parents experience success in Canadian English in both

listening/speaking and reading/writing. Courses are designed for a range of basic, intermediate and

advanced English (Levels 1 to 7) as well as the more experienced learner needing to prepare for an

IELTS exam. Winter courses begin February 5, 2018. All learners that complete a session will earn a

certificate of learning from the Peel District School Board.

Classes operate from six locations in Brampton and Mississauga with three specially designed adult

centres at:

Bramalea - Adult Education Centre - 25 Kings Cross Road, Unit 3

Brampton - Adult Education Centre - #300 - 7700 Hurontario Street

Mississauga - Adult Education Centre - 100 Elm Drive West, Room 117
