YOUNG WOMAN OF DISTINCTION 2014 NEWS

NATIONAL GIRL SCOUT YOUNG WOMAN OF DISTINCTION2014

Girl Scout Beginnings

Anna Krauss became a Daisy at the age of 5, excited to

join her friends from pre-school, and be a part of the Girl Scout experience. (In fact, she still has her Daisy tunic, complete with all the petals!)

Fast-forward 14 years, and Anna has become one of only ten young women nationally to be recognized as GSUSA’s 2014 Young Women of Distinction.

ANNA KRAUSSNEWS

The honor is bestowed annually on Girl Scouts who earned their Gold Award and created sustainable projects that impact the world.

But Anna’s path to success was a challenging one. When Anna was in third grade, she suddenly and inexplicably became deaf.

Making AdjustmentsAs one who lost her hearing seemingly overnight, Anna found herself in an often frustrating world. Says Anna, “I suddenly found myself unable to understand my friends or hear things that were happening around me. I realized I had taken for granted the everyday blessing of hearing- talking on the telephone...listening to music... hearing the birds chirp in the morning... I lost [my original form of] communication, but I learned to adapt.”

With this new adaptation, came a new set of challenges. “I had to become patient with myself and understand that it was not my fault that I couldn’t understand [others],” Anna says. She learned to communicate through lipreading and sign language. “I gained confidence, and things started to look up.”

The Path to Gold Anna excelled academically, but her hearing impairment presented a problem during standardized testing. Recalls Anna, “In 10th grade English, the class was administered a graded Listening Portion exam in preparation for the New York State Regents. In stark contrast to my high GPA, I scored very poorly on the exam. My teacher pointed out how unfair it was that I was subjected to listening without having the gift of hearing...I recognized that others saw the inequality... and that made me decide to pursue change.”

Anna’s desire to change the listening comprehension requirements for standardized tests became the focus of her Gold Award project. She appeared before the New York Education Reform Commission to ask that the state’s English exams remove the requirement that all students listen to a passage before answering questions.

YOUNG WOMAN OF DISTINCTION 2014 NEWS

Thanks to Anna, The New York State Education Department decided to revise the Test Access Accommodations for Students with Disabilities document to recommend that the availability of a written transcript of the listening selection of a state examination be available to deaf students.

“The amount of ‘red tape,’ the [challenge] of being diverted from one department to another, from one individual to another, was frustrating at best,” Anna says. “It was a huge moment of gratification when I received the letter...saying

that the guidelines had been amended according to my testimony at the Education Reform Commission.”

Looking ForwardAnna fostered a remarkable academic record, graduating as Salutatorian of her 2013 high school class. She is now entering her sophomore year of college as a Biotechnology & Molecular Bioscience major.

“Girl Scouts has had an enormous impact on my life,” Anna says. “Being part of a troop of girls who care about each other and their surroundings as a team has been invaluable to me.”

Anna also credits her Gold Award success to her troop leader, Gold Award mentor and her mother. “My troop leader really helped set the ball rolling for preparation,” Anna says. “My Gold Award mentor...encouraged me to try different ways until I finally broke through to meet with the Governor’s Office in Albany, NY. And my mom... watching her advocate for me so tirelessly and persistently inspires me and was a huge driving force behind my own advocacy.”

Anna’s advice for other Girl Scouts? “Keep a positive attitude!” she says. “Whatever project you’re doing...give it your best effort. Soon you’ll gain the confidence to strive for success in every endeavor, big and small.”

I CAN’T WAIT TO VOLUNTEER

The Heart of GS

We already know that Girl Scouting gives girls

the skills and experiences necessary to become confident, successful adults.

But do we know who helps girls grow from Daisies to strong, young women?

The answer is simple: Volunteers.

Girl Scout adult volunteers are at the heart of Girl Scouting. They are a vital part of the organization, serving as excellent role models as they assist girls on their path to a healthy, productive adulthood.

As a new Girl Scout year begins, we invite you to ask a friend to volunteer.

Read on to see how some of our very own Girl Scout volunteers are changing girls’ lives and their own.

Inspiring GirlsChristine Farrugia has been involved with GSSC for six years and is no stranger to Girl Scouting. She has three daughters, and is the leader for each of their troops: Cadette Troop 488, Brownie Troop 2844, and Daisy Troop 2360. Christine also serves as Den Leader for her son’s Cub Scout troop. “Scouting is a huge part of our

lives,” she says.

Christine knows first-hand the positive impacts that Girl Scouting has on young women. “I believe wholeheartedly in the foundations and morals of [Girl] Scouting and enjoy sharing the importance of community service and the values of kindness and respect with my [Girl] Scouts,” she says.

I CAN’T WAIT TOVOLUNTEER

This sentiment is echoed by Lauren Shaw, Gold Award Mentor and leader of Cadette Troop 344. Lauren received the Girl Scout Gold Award in 2006, and chose to continue her tenure in Girl Scouting by starting a troop. “I love what

Girl Scouts has to offer girls of all ages,” Lauren says. “It [Girl Scouts] teaches kindness

and compassion for others...girls become more confident...all of this, and more, molds these girls into great citizens for this world.”

While Girl Scouting is certainly a wonderful platform for community service and new experiences, it is also a place for girls to build strong interpersonal relationships with each other.

Jeanette Hernandez has been

active in Girl Scouts for ten years, is the co-leader for Multi-Level Troop 1417, and is a Gold Award Mentor. She is a firm believer of the rewards that are reaped through friendships formed in Girl Scouting. “There are so many benefits our troop has gained from Girl Scouting,” Jeanette says. “However, there is one that stands out from the rest--and that is the sisterhood that’s been created...I truly believe this bond will continue to flourish as our girls move on to adulthood.”

Volunteer Benefits While Girl Scouting clearly provides endless advantages and benefits for girls, there is also much to be gained personally from becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

As a volunteer, not only are you serving and giving the best Girl Scout experience to girls, you are also in for a personally enriching and exciting experience.

Just ask Girl Scout volunteer Florence Ellis-Ward. Florence co-led her daughter’s troop for nine years. Her daughter has since aged out of Girl Scouting, but Florence continues to serve as Service Unit Volunteer and Fall Product Campaign Manager for SU 7 in Deer Park.

For Florence, one of the best things about Girl Scouts is the opportunities it presents to females. But what does she find most rewarding about being a Girl Scout volunteer? “Knowing I am making a difference,” Florence says. “That I belong to a worthwhile organization that has been around for a very long time.”

For others, the enjoyment of filling the role of Girl Scout volunteer is rooted in watching girls grow and change. “I’ve seen shy girls step up and outgoing girls include everyone in activities,” Lauren says.

I CAN’T WAIT TO VOLUNTEER

“Knowing we have so many future leaders in our troops gets me excited for the years to come.”

Still for other volunteers, it’s about experiencing new adventures together. “The most rewarding part of being a Troop Leader are...the memories we have created throughout the years,” Jeanette says. “Friendships created so many years ago, are still growing strong today.”

Still LearningVolunteering can also lead to a path of self-discovery. For Troop Leader Christine, it’s about embracing new experiences. “I have learned...to always keep a sense of wonder and adventure in my heart,” she says.

Other volunteers have learned about developing patience and understanding. “I have learned that I am a patient person,” says Florence,”and that I have the capacity to empathize and listen.” Adds Lauren, “I have learned...that

sometimes all a girl needs is an ear to listen to her.”

Finally, volunteers learn that sometimes you have to embrace an unexpected change in agenda. “I’ve learned it’s okay when things don’t go as planned,” Jeanette says. ”You make the best of the situation, take a deep breath, and enjoy!”

Invite a Friend! What are you waiting for? Tell your friends about all of the wonderful benefits and

excitement offered through becoming a Girl Scout volunteer.

And remember! A volunteer commitment can be long-term or short-term. If you have a talent to share with girls, we want to know about it!

So, invite your friends to step into the role of encouraging young women to be their best selves and to join the Girl Scout movement.“We need more role models and caring people,” Florence says.

Additionally, there are many capacities in which someone can volunteer: troop leader, program facilitator, volunteer

trainer, event assistance--the list is endless.

“I view our work as [volunteers] as a noble cause that is worth every single hour we contribute to it,”Christine says. “We are indeed building girls of courage and character who will make a difference in their schools, communities, and our society.”

NEWSLEGO LEAGUE

For the past three years, Pam Mercouris, long-time Girl Scout

volunteer and troop leader of Troop 3030, has been actively involved with the LEGO League.

Pam coaches a First LEGO League (FLL) team comprised of three Cadette and five Senior Girl Scouts. She also leads the First Tech Challenge (FTC)team, which is comprised of three Senior and three Ambassador Girl Scouts. Both teams are named the Radical Robots.

“My daughter Victoria has benefited greatly with the FIRST program,” Pam says. “She loves what she does ...and has made the decision to follow her passion with a career in Robotics Engineering.”

Indeed, Pam’s teams have seen notable success. The Radical Robots FLL team took home 1st Place Champions and 2nd Place Robot Performance at the FLL Qualifier Tournament last February, allowing the team to advance to the Championship Tournament.

The Radical Robots FTC team won the Connect Award and Finalist Alliance Award at the Qualifier Tournament in March,

where they also advanced to the Championship Tournament.

For Pam, STEM offers unique opportunities to young women. “The STEM programs are life learning experiences,” she says.

“Building the robot and wiring motors...will teach girls to do simple wiring jobs around the house or maybe even learn how to work on their own car,” Pam says. “Simple things like this will give girls power to stand on their own and be proud of it.”

This sentiment is echoed by Laura Rock-Smith, co-leader of Troop 3030 and Fall Product Campaign Manager of SU 32. Laura’s daughter Anna, is a member of The Radical Robots FTC team.

“[Anna] has learned she can do more than she thinks while being part of a team and still being herself,” Laura says. “She has gained a ton of confidence.”

Laura also believes in the importance of having girls experience STEM.“Girls need to see that they can do anything,” she says.

While the LEGO League offers great opportunities for girls, it

also has rewards for its adult volunteers. “When you see their [the girls’] faces light up when the program works for the first time...you know right then and there that all the time and effort with these girls is beyond worth it,” Pam says.
