SOCIAL SECURITY SUPPORTS THE FIGHT AGAINST

    CANCER

    WITH THE COMPASSIONATE ALLOWANCES PROGRAM

    By Debra Scull

Social Security District Manager in Wilmington, DEIn 2015, more than a million people will be diagnosed withcancer. This alarming statistic affects people and families all overthe world. In support of cancer patients and their families, SocialSecurity encourages checkups, early detection, and awareness, while honoring the survivors who have gone through this battleand defeated the disease.

Social Security stands strong in our support of the fight againstcancer. We offer services to patients suffering from this diseasethrough our disability program and our CompassionateAllowances program. Compassionate Allowances are caseswith medical conditions so severe they obviously meet SocialSecurity’s disability standards, allowing us to quickly process the

    cases with minimal medical information.

There is no special application or form you need to submit forCompassionate Allowances. Simply apply for disability benefitsusing the standard Social Security or Supplemental SecurityIncome (SSI) application. Once we identify you as having aCompassionate Allowances condition, we’ll expedite your

    disability application.

Social Security establishes Compassionate Allowances conditionsusing information received at public outreach hearings, from theSocial Security and disability Determination servicescommunities, from medical and scientific experts, and based onour research. For more information about CompassionateAllowances, or to view the conditions currently listed, visitwww.socialsecurity.gov/compassionateallowances.

If you think you qualify for disability benefits based on a

Compassionate Allowances condition, please visitwww.socialsecurity.gov to apply for benefits.

Keep Your Costs Down This Summer

Summer costs can run wild! Between increased electric costs, more invitationsto events, and the feeling just to get out of the house and go DO something, summer presents a lot of opportunities to wreck your budget. Don’t let thathappen to you! Here are some options to keep your costs down:

Electric CostsUse a drying rack, hangers, or a clothes line to dry your clothes instead ofthe electric clothes dryer.Dust the coils and light bulb in your refrigerator to help them be energyefficient.

Events, Activities, and OutingsThink about your favorite summer activities and see if there is a discountfor frequent admission – like the Delaware State Park annual pass. When invited to a potluck or asked to bring a dish, cook up somethingthat is both delicious and cheap. Try buffalo chicken dip, crockpotchocolate cake, even BBQ pork for yummy crowd pleasers on a budget. No need to go over the top with complex and expensive dishes.

For more help keeping your expenses down this summer, work with a $tand ByMe 50+ financial coach! In New Castle County, call 302-651-3401 and in Kentand Sussex Counties, call 302-415-1542.
