    The Ramayana was originally written bySage Valmiki in Sanskrit. The originalRamayana is said to have been composedbased on each of the twenty-four lettersof the Gayatri Hymn. Later Ramayanawas translated into the Awadhi languageby Goswami Tulsidas asRamcharitmanas. It contains couplets inverse form called chaupai. TheRamayana has been traditionally dividedinto seven books, dealing with the life ofRama starting from his birth till hisdeath.

  • 1. Bal Kand This is the book aboutyoung prince Rama which detailsthe miraculous birth of Rama, hisearly life in Ayodhya, and hisslaying of the demons at theDandaka forest on the request ofVishwamitra. The book concludeswith his wedding to Sita. Bal Kandhas 77 chapters.

    2. Ayodhya KandThis is the bookabout Ayodhya in whichDasharatha comes to grief over hispledge to Kaikeyi and is forced tosend Rama to exile. The bookconcludes with the death ofDasharatha. Ayodhya Kand has 119chapters.

    4. Kishkindha Kand This book isabout Kishkindha, the Vanarakingdom in which Rama befriendsSugriva and his army and beginsthe search for Sita. This book has67 chapters.

    5. Sundar Kand This is the book ofSundar (Hanuman) in whichHanuman travels to Lanka in searchof Sita. On nding Sita imprisonedthere he burns the golden Lankabefore returning to Rama to givehim the good news. Sundar Kandhas 68 chapters.

    6. Yuddha Kand This is the book

  • about the war which narrates theRama Ravana war. The bookconcludes with the return ofsuccessful Rama to Ayodhya andhis coronation. This book is thelargest of all and it has 131chapters.

    7. Uttara Kand This is the seventhbook which details the life of Ramaand Sita after their return toAyodhya, Sita's banishment, and thebirth of her twin sons in thehermitage of Valmiki.
