TBA Book Group with Rabbi Kulwin Thursday, January 7, 7:30 PM The Mathema cian's Shiva by Stuart Rojstaczer It’s winter in Madison, Wisconsin, and Sasha Karnokovitch is preparing for the funeral of his mother, the math professor. Mathema cian hoards appear from all over the world, both to pay homage to her and to inves gate the intriguing rumor that, prior to her death, she had solved the Napier‐Stokes Millennium Prize problem. Judaism, the immigrant experience, and lots of math are mixed wonderfully (and hilariously) to‐gether in this author’s first novel. Parashat HaShavuah with Rabbi Kulwin Parashat HaShavuah, EVERY Saturday morning , at 9:00 AM before Services Israel Through Film Cinema is big in Israel. Israelis love the movies and, for its size, Israel produces a lot of them. Art, by its very nature, is a way of looking at something, and in these sessions we will see what we can learn about Israel through its films: how do Israelis see themselves, how do Israelis see the world, and on why do Israeli filmmakers make the films they do? Some mes, films reinforce the historical narra ve with which we are familiar; other mes, films stand that narra ve on its head. We will watch and discuss examples of both. Rabbi Kulwin will introduce each screening and lead a discussion a erward. Dates are Wednesdays, January 13, February 10 & March 2.
Wednesday, January 13, 7:00 PM Hill Halfon Doesn’t Answer (1976) A li le John Wayne, li le MASH, and a lot of Marx Brothers, Hill Halfon pokes fun at army life though it’s more interested in the army as a backdrop for slaps ck. The actors include Hagashach Hashiver, an Israe‐li comedy trio akin, in their day, to Mar n and Lewis.
Wednesday, February 10, 7:00 PM Late Summer Blues (1987) Summer, 1970 The War of A ri on. High school friends head to the army, each with mixed feelings. One a pacifist, one torn between pilot training and a music unit (with his girlfriend), a third cursing the diabetes that makes him ineligible for service, and so on. Though an an ‐war polemic, Late Summer Blues focuses more on the personal than the poli cal.
Rosh Hodesh with Rabbi Dantowitz The new month, or Rosh Hodesh, has evolved into a women’s holiday. TBA’s Sisterhood joins together a few mes a year to welcome the new month with conversa on, learning, spiritual growth, and connec on. Join
us to welcome the month of Sh’vat, Wednesday, January 6, at 7:30 PM. Monthly Lunch and Learn with Rabbi Faith Joy Dantowitz: The Book of Judges ─ Please Save Me (or Sin, Punishment and Rescue. Repeat) In this monthly class, we will learn about the Judges who tried and failed to lead the people at this cri cal me in the history of the Jewish na on. As we explore their leadership strengths and weaknesses, we will
also shed light on the book’s meaning for us today, Thursday, January 14, 11:30 AM.
