WHAT IS HANUKKAH?

Hanukkah is the festival of lights and it´s from Jewish religion.

It´s usually celebrated in November or December and it lasts for eight days.

Its traditions are: *Lighting candles *Giving presents *Playing games *Eating food fried in oil

CANDLES:

Candles are very special in this festival. Its name is Hanukkah menorah or Hanukkiah. It has been used since ancient times as a Jewish Symbol Hanukkiah´s got nine candles and ligths Hanukkah´s night

time. In London they celebrate Hanukkah´s London Festival

putting a very big lit up with some candles for the Jewish Festival of Lights in UK.

In Trafalgar Square installed a Chritsmas tree for close truly the

multicultural winter event.

PLAYING DREIDEL:

A dreidel is a spinning top with four sides and on each one of this sides are Hebrew letters.

This play is traditional over the world but it´s born in Jewish houses in London. Its rules vary from family to family.

In some games, you can play with the dreidel.

The spinning turn and the players start to bet. When the spinning stops and show a letter, only one person win the betting.

Usually, people bet using coins, raisins or matchsticks.

FOOD:

The traditional food at Hanukkah is fried food. Typical plates Latkes: fried pamcakes made with potatoes, onions, eggs,

flour and oil. Doughnuts filled of jam. Cheese or Cheesecake.

PRESENTS AND CARDS: Give money or presents to family and friends is traditional

at Hanukkah. Gelt is the Yiddis word for money. Hanukkah Gelt refers to

money like a gift at Hanukkah´s festival. Children often wrap chocolate coins in gold foil. People write gretting cards too, and Hanukkah´s cards

show a picture of menorah or dreidel.
