My personality and lifestyle denitely have an impact on which direction my inuences are aimed. I am an easy goingperson and I have always had a strong interest in contemporary and quite odd to put it blankly side to art, fashion and
general taste. I have always had an interest in artists who play about with controversial topics and mediums of reachingtheir audiences or putting their views across.
I think that this denitely plays a role in my work as I am conscious of my target audiences and I like to think that my work
is something that can be put to use and is either something that makes people think or something that can be used anis
useful for consumers. In a way I think I like to try to cater for different types of audiences when doing projects, I am stillstuck between which particular audience it is that I would like to be in solidly for a while, which of course plays a huge
part in my attitudes to design itself. Everything in the world has been designed for a reason, whether for practical rea-sons, for a concept or for pleasure.
My attitudes towards design when it comes to me designing I like to plan things out and experiment on different styles, I
think I would describe my style as eclectic as I am always appreciating new ways to create things and therefore I have a
very open mind when it comes to designing. I feel I am quite an organised designer, like I said I like to keep in mind myconsumers and what kind of a target audience my product would t to ensure that I am not making something that would
never be used, I feel I lean much more towards the design for practicality reasons of design rather than a conceptualreason for creating something. I love design that is unusual and contemporary but with a practical side to it.
I really admire art that is controversial, anything out of the ordinary or someone that is just taking a different approach tothe norm. I like simplicity that has a twist, whether it is a garment that has a contemporary shape to it, a piece of interior
design that makes me wonder how I am supposed to use it before I try, or something that just attracts my attention, I liketo make my work clean cut but in a way that it is organised clutter, the objects or images may not sit well next to each
other in a shop shelf however in my mind they t. Kitsch, funny, quirky and interesting styles always attract my attentionand admiration.
I love magazines like WeAr, LOVE, iD, Illustrated Ape, WUW and I love the researchers from M.E Design Mag.com astheir choices of stories and the nds they come up with are so contemporary and unusual which is the style of what I
aspire to one day put into my work.
I like to push myself to try something that I am unsure and almost alien to in order to ensure that I am trying a new style.
I think I get this passion for challenges from my father who is a very hard worker and always tries to aspire to get to thetop. I have never met anyone so hardworking before.
On top of this my mother is a huge inuence in my life but also as a friend she is always there to ensure that I am happyand enjoy what I do, as well as my parents my friends are always there for me to help me out with problems and let me
know ,subtly, where I am going wrong! I guess this is also a huge inuence in my inspirations as I am always around
them and go to them for advice. I really admire the work of illustrators like Monaux, bo130, the work of Lucy and Bart, clothing from COS for their simplicity and contemporary styling, I love urban and street style drawings, colour matchingand collecting things so my admirations for artists and designers stretch to limits.

So I started off in a bit of a rut. I began by trying to nd myself, I found this project quite hard to get
into but once I played around with drawings and looking at things that i nspire me and things that
I love I realised that I really love layouts, how things are presented to portray an idea of somethingwithout the need for the use of text. So now I know that I love layouts and presentation, I also am
focusing on menswear. I have always prefered it to womenswear and the use of products is key
within menswear also and this is something that I would like to develop this idea further into my
Extended Major Project.

After a lecture with Phil Rowland he said it would be a good
idea to just write down everything that you like or that is
assoicated with you and that will be your narrative. It is a way to
help build a concept and get started.

Thinking on design layout and what my synopsis of the idea is. Throughout the sketchpad my aim was to portray my own style of
layout and what kind of imagery I am drawn to. I wanted to give an insight into what images I like and how I feel the best way to lay
them out. Hopefully it gives an idea of my style and what I like to look for. I love the use of shape and colour to put across a feelingof the garment or style that is being conveyed.

I always turn to ME design mag when I am struggleingto get inspired. It is my favourite source of ideas and
innovative design and products. It has got such a wideand innovative range of content and its target audi-
ence is easily recofnised when you look at the website
it is clear from the featured product and articles that
the audience are quite specic. I want my publication
to be spcic also. I loev simplicity and open s[ace, the

Now I began to research my market and look atwebsites that my target audience would look at to
allow me to get an i nsight into their minds and tothink how they think and see what they see.
The Uber CollectionBasically everything is pretty uber here- denately aimed at people with alot of disposable income but it is still spot on and
perfect for its target audience.
With catagories that shape just about the most perfect lifestyle what rich man would avoid this website? I think denately
the ideal life guide the catagories cover just about everything and the website is structured really well.
Its very easy to use and the imagery is good too- again with the use of showing something without actually showing it i
will always love that element!
I think that this website is really good as it covers just about every aspect of the gentlemans life that they are promoting.
Which shows that they know their consumer really well. However I feel it is a bit too upmarket for my target audience.

The branding is really good, it aims at the
tasteful humour that men need and the prod-ucts are gorgeous too.
The layout of the website is really affective as
there are two main images the left one chang-

and the right is just a really cool man that evenDC said he would like to aspire to be! Nice

doesnt
tions I wThoughts on competitors...
From my research of competitors my knowledge of brands have expanded and I have
got a good idea of what my target consumers will buy into.
From here I need some primary research. Aswell as using Darren my industry mentor as
a source of this to ask questions to and to get into the mind of a man.
I also need to connect with my consumer. I am going to put a questionnaire together us-
ing SurveyMonkey to help me to get an insight into their thoughts, also it will be good to
get an idea of how many people I ask are on the same wavelength as me.
The research of competitor websites and online magazines gives me a great insight into
the need for simplicity and the key focus on imagery and what catches the eye, what
works and what really fails!
I need to ask careful questions about brands, the layout, age range, what would they
wear etc..
-
8/8/2019 Hannah Simister MPP
16/96
These questions helped me to see what the consumers like, and what they would
choose if they had the option of a digital version. As the results show 85.7% pre-
fer an actual magazine. This leaves me to think that there is a gap in the market for
people who I asked that dont have the iPad and that there is room for expansion in
order to gain a wider consumer market in future ideas...
-
8/8/2019 Hannah Simister MPP
17/96
I asked my consumers whether they would wear any of the brands listed and if not what
brands they would wear, or aspire to wear. This was useful and required to ensure that I get
the brands correct in the magazine to allow me to please the consumer and ensure that they
are correct for the magazine

After talking to darren about my idea he kindly sent me a presentation from Lacoste, it was a really interesting presentation
and I found some slides really useful as information to keep in mind for things like garments to choose, as the presentation
talks about what is selling best in menswear etc.
This slide is really
helpful to me, as it
reassures me that there
is a need for technology
within the market. AND
in my age range!

Consumer ProlesThese will help me give a face to the consumer, so I can always keep them in mind, allowing me to get
motivated and avoid distraction from the consumer. I created these on the basis of what I have found
out so far in my market research. Including imagery of clothing that they would wear, where they might
go and the music they might listen to. aswell as imagery of what they might look like.

Creating the brand identity is very important to me, I want the publication to be origional, slick and to stand out.
It needs to be punchy, quick, easy and cool.

Something as simple as this would be really good, I am going to brain storm ideas for this in my sketchpad as I nd that
it is easier for me to work on things like identity where I can draw and scribble and generate ideas in my way.

Looking at the colour ways based on the
imagery in the previous pages to try to get
some inspiration for what to use. I want my
layout to be really simple with the use of
imagery as the main source of colour, so
not to cause distraction from the main idea
and product. I like these colour ways how-
ever i think that I am going to keep it simple
and clean for now, with ideas for future
expansion and development for the layoutto have colour etc. I want to use this proj-
ect as a chance to see what my origional
ideas would look like. I can develop the
layout further with use of colour and better
graphics and possible collaboration with
Graphic Designers to ensure that my layout
is precise, however for now I want to con-
centrate on getting my consumer and my
ideologies correct.

Last week, two Cond Nast magazines, Vogue and Wired UK, unveilediPad editions of their December issues, and NicholasColeridge, the managing director of the magazine groups British arm, was in characteristically bullish mood. Noting that the reces-
sion had conrmed the pattern of downturns seeing a ight to quality that favours his upmarket glossies, he enthused about the
twin launches: Were entering the iPad apps market with two very different approaches the two apps deliver very different experi-
ences. The Wired app, using Adobe, is a magazine brand that offers long-form journalism, often features of 6,000 words, coupled
with infographics and diagrams. The Vogue app uses a specially created platform, conceived to allow fashion photography and
shoots to come to life, to allow the fashion magazine to offer a multi- sensory experience. The quality of pictures on the iPad isamazing, which is best shown by the Mario Testino footage on the Vogue app.
For Coleridge, the initiative reects Cond Nasts real digital breakthrough in the last eight months and a step change in usage. We
have become more adept at selling what we have digitally. Integration has been happening slowly between between print and digi-
tal. Reviewing progress at his titles websites, he is pleased
that the speed with which vogue.com is now delivering
content is living up to consumer demand, as the changing
media arena means users expect instant reporting. Its im-
portant, though, to balance that with quality and accuracy,
and it now takes just 40 minutes for expert opinion on thecatwalk shows to go live on the site.
Wired UK, launched last year, has understandably seen
fast growth, and glamour.com sees a peak in usage at
lunchtime; but gq.com was a difcult brand to get right
online its easy to go down the [pictures of under-dressed]girls route, but thats simply not appropriate for GQ. Since
a redesign with an emphasis on fashion and style author-
ity in February, however, weve seen page views grow by
33%.
For Coleridge, lads mags dramatic recent sales losses are
an example of where magazines can and have been affect-ed detrimentally by digital; but at Cond Nast, increase in
web use has not seen a corresponding dip in print circula-
tion, he says.

Interview are a perfect example of using main imagery to attract the attention of the reader. I like
this as it is just like a magazine. The images are strong and the layout is clean, I want to keep
the ideologies of this within my layout, I feel that imagery should speak for itself and that the use
of the imagery against the contrasting text and use of colour on the front page really appeals
to me and helps to put the unique ideas of the
magazine across in a very good way. I am de-
nately going to experiment with using just a
plain simple layout and using key images to get
my point across!

I think that the general idea of having a pitch for my product is a good idea. However for
stage reviews I think that it was too much of a basic outline of the whole unit and i t did not
show how much work I have done, or the evidence of my research and technical skills used
throughout the unit.
The pitch was successful in the way that it allowed me to learn more about how to
communicate my idea briey and what points I needed to keep in mind for future events that
may require me to present a pitch of an idea.
However for stage reviews to have this presentation alone is not good enough as my tutors
were not able to see my work and therefore give me the feedback that I needed!
However at least I have learnt from this for next year!

this shows one of the details my designer changed on my app- coming from his point of
view it was all wrong- I asked him to tell me what was wrong with the app from his point of
view. He helped me to understand where he was coming from and I am going to keep this
in mind and make sure that my layouts for the expansion are better graphically. He said that
it is good to make sure that the layouts have elements that are similar to the ipad and other
apps. I argued this by saying that I wanted it to be clean and more about the layout of imag-
ery and what impression that gives. But i do understand his point of view- i wanted to keep
my layout similar to my origional one which is why I am going to expand on it for my next unit
as this outcome is only a prototype I wanted to concentrate on learning the skills rst.

never used Flash Catalyst before so it was quite di fcult to start. It was good to try out a rst
attempt with my graohic designer as it gave me an idea of how it would look like and how the
process is.
I feel that my development of the rst animation from a moving image to an interactive piece
of work reects my main idea more and shows how i have thought about both aspects of the
idea.
The technical skills I gained from this development were really benecial to me and I feel
condent to use the software on my own!

I have previously worked with Darren Campbell when I did some work experience with Lacoste in the summer. Darren is the Inter-
national Category Director at Lacoste. I am regualrly meeting Darren to get his thoughts and input on my work. Each week I bring
in what I have worked on and my ideas that I have developed, I then present these to Darren, who gives me motivational critisism,
and information he can nd that will help me, and he gives me any inspiration that he can nd or that he gets from my talking
points. It has been a greate experience meeting with him and getting an i ndustry perspective on my work. I am very luck to have
had such a helpful mentor and whenever I have a problem he i s always there to help trigger my thoughts and motivate me. I cantstress enough that all the work and ideas in this project are ones that I have come up with myself. Each week I take them to the
ofce in Finchley where I meet Darren and see his opinion on things, after all I am doing menswear so I need to get a mans point
of view on my ideas which is really useful to have!

Hannah has researched her key demographic very well and shows a clear understanding of the menswear market. Menswear is all about product and Hannah seems to un-derstand this, men are wired up differently and thus purchase things differently. Its an interested area to look at, men of this type are mis-communicated to by thefashion industry who still tend to concentrate on shifting fashion and trends. A publi-cation either print or digital aimed specically at this type of male would be ideal.
2 points for consideration- presentation needs to be more developed.
And, the age group could be broadened- 35? Maybe, up to 45 is just as realistic.
this is the advice Glenn gave me, unfortunately I recieved it on Monday
the day before hand in but I am really grateful of the feedback as he is
the type of consumer I would be aiming at and it also gives me some
more opportunities for development in my EMP and future ideas. I like
the idea of highering the age range to 45 it would make it broader as-
well. I am really grateful for Glenns feedback and hope to speak with him
in my EMP at some points?!

Future Ideas and
Thoughts

Subject: UK Fashion Consumers - Drapers Survey
Drapers commissioned the attached report which presents the nd -
ings from a
be part of the broader brand community. This group is arguably
likely to grow in the future as digi-natives take over the world! But there is currently a much bigger group of people who use the
internet for browsing products, checking stock availability and
looking for the best deals. They are open to email updates, if it
comes from a company they like and there is genuine news about new

ings from a
robust online survey among 3,200 U K adults, split across age, gender
and
income. It explores how fashion consumers are changing in the way
they
shop and their relationships with brands and retailers. Some ndings:
More predictable ...?
Financial incentives (Loyalty card, Money-off vouchers) are most
effective at encouraging more regular purchasing.
Over half of consumers now claim to spread their spending between
stores and websites, while around 40% only buy in store (biased to
older age groups).
The Fashion Retailers rated as best at understanding their shoppers
reect market share (M&S top, Next second - among under 25s, Top
Shop leads, followed by New Look and River Island). Departmentstores (esp. John Lewis) punch above their weight.
Less predictable ...?
All ages seem keen to receive regular emails from fashion brands they
really like. Younger consumers are far more open to regular digital
contact (Facebook, Twitter); older consumers still prefer postal
mailings.
43% say they do mind fashion brands/retailers collecting and
analysing information on th em even if it means th ey offer better,
more personalised products and services. Paradoxically, 67% say the
offer of a discount might encourage them to share basic information
about themselves.
Summary
For many fashion brands there is a small group of (often younger,
female) consumers, who are well connected, vocal and inuential.
They welcome brand contact, want to receive lots of information and
comes from a company they like and there is genuine news about new
stock or deals, but dont want to be friends nor be bombarded with
marketing.
There is a third signicant group (generally older) who feel uneasy
at the thought of companies knowing too much about them, and fear
divulging personal information online.

Ollie Smith from Lacoste kindly sent me some
information taken from the UK Drapers survey.
They are really useful and give me ideas for the
future- for example using loyalty cards- this
will also help me to relate to the exclusive na-
ture I want to include in my publication.
Also contacting with the consumer- I want to
do this by text but using social networking will
be a good idea too.

Taken from my stage review... I found
these notes were quite unhelpful as
they kind of just said what I had done,I found it difcult to move on from
this and better my work so i came to
a bit of a stand still because of this. I
emailed my mentor and he said to not
worry!!! And to look at my schedule
and make sure that I am in the right
place, have i done everything on there
and so on. It was helpful advice and I
was able to get some queries together
from my results for my stage review to
ask tiffany how I can better them.

Here are the notes from my stage
review feedback tutorial with Tiffany,
she helped me to understand what
I need to do to push my work and
to get a better understanding of the
grading matrix and assessment cri-
teria.
I was also confused on the portfolio
layouts so there are some notes on
what to do there too- as my out-
come is an animaiton I need to be
aware that I need to present it in a
way to allow someone who doesnt
know anything about my work to
get an understanding on what the
work actually is! So i am creating a
story board style layout for this and
then a nal layout displaying two
slides in a really good way.

Here is my interactive piece, you can play about click on things and get an idea
for how the product could be and the d irection I aim to take it. You can also seefrom this piece that I am a beginner at the software so it is an opportunity for me
to try new skills and develop these further and better my skills. There is also a

My weaknesses in this unit have been mainly at the start of the unit, I nd it very difcult to make a start on things and to come
up with an idea straight away, it is difcult for me to nd the right pathway to go down and I think that this i s also due to my con-
dence issues. However in this unit I managed to turn this weakness into an opportunity to explore areas of the industry that Iliked and was then able to come up with a solid route which I was happy with.
Another weakness would have to be showing what I have done. I think that during my stage review crit I didnt show the pro-
cesses that I have persued to get to my ideas, I treated it as a pitch but didnt show what needed to be seen. This I feel let me

down and the tutors then thought that the work didnt have enough of me in it when throughout the whole unit it had been all of
my work- again I can turn this into an opportunity for future units and stage reviews by ensuring that throughout my work I show
how I have come up with the ideas and how I managed to develop them further from outside inuences- eg taking their ideas on
board and making them my own. Oh and make sure that I have shown it is mine in the stage reviews!!!
I feel a weakness has been developing my own content, I feel that i could have experimented a bit more with maybe photo-
shoots and so on, however I wanted this unit to be more on experimenting and learning new skills, I do not regret the fact that I
have not experimented more with my own content because the imagery that I have used in my nal outcome is my own appart
from 3 images of garments so I am happy that the content is origional, it gives me an opportunity for my next unit to show that I
can create my own imagery and that I can develop the ideas further.
I am glad that I have recognised my weaknesses as it allows me to learn from them and they give me things to work on in my
next unit.
