Welcome to the latest edition of Hannah Time.

Throughout the summer the Trustees have been supporting our dedicated staff, ensuring that the important work of our charity continues with all the vibrancy and energy for which Hannahs is known. Seale-Hayne in particular has experienced significant changes - and we know how difficult that has been for those affected - but working with new partners and renewing ongoing projects we are seeing a real upturn in our financial position as well as lots of activity and vitality across the site.

See inside our pages for more. We have key news from our School at Ivybridge, our Children’s Home and Hannahwood. Our case studies give you a very personal snapshot of what Hannahs means to those who use our

services or volunteer or work with us. We hope you enjoy reading them - and why not contact us and tell us about what Hannahs means to you? We’d love to hear from you. Our 250 Campaign is going strong - catch up with the latest news and plans for the future.

Above all, spread the word amongst friends and colleagues about Hannahs work at both Ivybridge and Seale-Hayne. We exist for our guests and to raise the profile of disability across our communities. Bring a friend (or several) along to our upcoming events - we know they will enjoy seeing first-hand what we do and will feel happy to support our work.

David Coslett, Chair of Trustees

Meet our new Trustees, the people who make decisions about our strategic direction. Hannahs is governed by our Board of Trustees, which is ultimately responsible for the management and conduct of the charity. It sets the strategic direction to enable us to work towards achieving our vision and goals.

David CoslettChair of Trustees“My role at Hannahs is to lead the Board and work with my fellow Trustees to see that we are operating with good governance securely in place. If that sounds dull - believe me it isn’t! Our Trustees offer their skills, experience and judgement to help shape the future direction of Hannahs - it’s a huge privilege to work with them.”

Nick Seviour“I am very pleased and proud to be joining such a wonderful organisation. I feel very privileged to have this opportunity to contribute and participate in the future of Hannahs. I have joined the team due to my heart and my head. Firstly, the services that are provided are very close to my heart and family life. Secondly, I believe my professional business experiences and skills will help assist and contribute significantly to Hannahs.”

Scott Bennett“I have extensive experience in leading change in government and community organisations locally and nationally. I am really pleased to be joining the board at this exciting time for Hannahs and I look forward to seeing Hannahs develop over the next few years.”

Nicky Houghton“I have a clinical background RGN/RSCN and have extensive experience of working with Children with complex health needs in both Acute and Community settings. My skill set includes commissioning Adult and Children’s Community and Mental Health services and currently

working with a National Policy and Strategy Team focusing on Personalisation and Choice through Integrated Personal commissioning.”

Paul Boys“One of my adult sons has Down’s Syndrome and I have served as a voluntary Trustee for a number of learning disability charities over the past 30 years. My goal is to help Hannahs overcome our current problems and once again become a strong and financially viable charity”.

Simon Morris“My role will be to provide direction and support at board level, but with the addition of applying that support from a legal perspective. I hope to offer my time and expertise to fully support Hannahs as it evolves its commercial arm, which is so important in providing that additional support to its primary charitable objective to provide care to children and adults with a range of disabilities.

Nigel Godefroy‘I am extremely pleased to become part of the Hannahs story. I am a commercially minded Chartered Accountant having previously been the Chief Executive of Sutton Harbour in Plymouth. I know my way around finance, property and making organisations work and very much look forward to continuing to help the Executive team’.

ActivitiesOur young adults have continued to lead busy and active lives and are taking advantage of every opportunity offered to them. From sailing and dog walking to night clubbing, they have had diverse experiences and been exploring different areas of Devon. At Hannahwood they are able to take part in many fun activities whether it is playing sensory bingo or boccia or listening to live music. They continue to run a successful coffee shop called Sweets and Treats and many of them are involved in presenting shows on Hannahwood Radio. Hannah Lavell has been very busy in her role as Youth Ambassador for the World Literacy Foundation and has been getting involved with literacy projects supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children in the community.

Adult Services Three inspections from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) were carried out recently and we were delighted with the results. Hannahwood Mews received ‘Good’ in all key areas, Arthur Care Home was given a focused inspection in the key area of safe and was rated ‘Good’ in all areas and Hannahwood Transitions was given a ‘Good’ with an ‘Outstanding’ in care. All three facilities cater for young adults with physical disabilities and associated sensory, communication and learning difficulties. Hannahwood Mews is an adapted nursing unit, Arthur Care Home is a specifically adapted bungalow based in the centre of Ivybridge for young adults who can enjoy just that little bit more independent living and Hannahwood Transitions comprises five residential bungalows. In addition to the residential bungalows, Transitions also offers a respite service, enabling individuals to have a secure and supportive environment away from home, during the week.

Our SchoolThe school has welcomed its first child to Starfish Nursery and two new pupils have joined our Post 16 class. At the end of the last school year there was a wonderful Celebration of Achievement which celebrated the children’s work during the school year. The event was attended by parents who were able to view the children’s work and all the children were presented with certificates. The Pre 16 group follow the Equals Framework sensory curriculum which is integrated and holistic while the Post 16 students follow the ASDAN Personal Progress and the Trinity College Arts Award. Meanwhile we have had very positive feedback from the pilot school that has used our new Step Centre.

Children’s HomeHannahs Children’s Home recently received an inspection from Ofsted and we were delighted to be awarded ‘Good’ for the overall experiences and progress of children and young people. Hannahs Avenue provides long-term care and accommodation, extended stays and short-break care for up to 15 children and young people who have learning and physical disabilities. Highlights of the report were that staff consult well with the young people and provide them with good opportunities to contribute to the running of the home and to take part in a variety of activities and they enable them to have fun.

RioA new 19+ College known as Rio has been founded for our young adults in Hannahwood after a successful pilot scheme last year. Following the end of a fruitful partnership with Plymouth City College, Plymouth Education has started funding places at Hannahs Ivybridge for young adults to attend the 19+ College in Hannahwood Adult Services. As part of a Living Learning and Moving On programme, the young adults are learning all about life and living skills and adult choices and are attending up to five days a week.

Seale-Hayne

Over 6000 people flocked to Hannahs at Seale-Hayne this summer for the Looking in Wonderland exhibition. Both tourists and locals alike enjoyed the stunning exhibition of illustrations from the Alice in Wonderland books as well as Alice themed events and activities.

During the summer Seale-Hayne was filled with little Alices and Mad Hatters running around the quad playing Flamingo Croquet, taking part in the White Rabbit’s Treasure Hunt and enjoying Alice themed teas and lunch boxes. While visiting the exhibition in the gallery they were able to dress up and enjoy arts and crafts activities.

Pocketwatch Theatre performed a very entertaining version of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party around the grounds of Seale-Hayne while Quantum Theatre gave an open air performance of Alice through the Looking Glass. Moonstone Theatre brought Murder Mystery to Seale-Hayne with Malice in Wonderland and Creation Station hosted some very creative Mad Hatter’s Arty Tea Parties.

Hannahs Head of Marketing, Rebecca Bowen-Keay, said:

“We are really thrilled that so many visitors came to Seale-Hayne to experience some of the fantastic family activities, to join in our summer of Wonderland and be a part of the vibrant community that is Hannahs”.

Simply Great MediaAnother new partnership is with Simply Great Media who will be delivering cutting edge entertainment and media services within the former ‘Big Red Live’ rooms at Seale-Hayne. Simply Great Media bring a vast range of industry expertise, high tech professional equipment and a ‘people over profit’ ethos. They will be delivering Web Streaming, Radio Broadcast and Entertainment Events within a refurbished area which will become known as ‘The Green Room’.

The Key at HannahsHannahs has launched a new partnership with New Key to take on the ownership and continue with the day to day management of the Adult Day Services at Seale-Hayne. Known as The Key at Hannahs, they will be continuing to provide the existing sessions that include Art, Drama, Music, Horticulture, Outdoor Pursuits and use of our Access all Aerials radio station. New Key will provide a great solution, with little disruption to what is offered, allowing the continuation of support from the fantastic qualified staff, artists and musicians at Seale-Hayne.

Down’s Syndrome AssociationWe are excited that a national charity, the Down’s Syndrome Association (DSA), opened an office at Seale-Hayne in August. Although the charity has had a presence in Devon for the last two years the move to Seale-Hayne gives the DSA an opportunity to be more visible in Devon and the South West and to be more accessible to people with Down’s Syndrome and their families, carers and the professionals who support them.

New PartnershipsAt Seale-Hayne we are excited to have recently formed new innovative partnerships to ensure the services offered at Seale-Hayne for adults with learning, physical and mental disabilities go from strength to strength.

Meet the team

Michelle is based at the warehouse behind Hannahs Charity Shop in Transit Way, Plymouth. She has been involved with Hannahs since she started as a volunteer in the Devonport Charity Shop in 2012. Due to her obvious talents and commitment Michelle was soon appointed manager of the St Budeaux shop when it opened in 2014. Two years later she was promoted to Warehouse and Distribution Manager and moved to Transit Way where she was instrumental in transforming and reorganising the warehouse. Michelle originally chose to volunteer for Hannahs as she became a regular visitor to the Devonport shop where she learnt more about the charity.

Michelle said:

“I wouldn’t change this for the world. I work with a great team and where we have got to now is amazing. I love my job”

Richard started volunteering for Hannahs in 2016. After 30 years working in Financial Services, he decided that he wanted to give something back to a local charity. He volunteers two days a week working with Hannahs guests who take part in sporting activities and also fundraising. He has been recruiting his corporate contacts such as Plymouth and Cornwall Insurance Institute and Applied Automation who are now supporting Hannahs.

Richard said:

“I fell in love with Seale-Hayne the very first time I visited. The whole ethos of the charity really hit home and its aims, surroundings and people were the inspiration for me wanting to get involved. Hannahs has given me the opportunity to not only work with but to become friends with a number of our guests and to see first-hand both the joy and benefits the charity’s work brings. It has also given me some of the most rewarding experiences of my life”.

Will Clarke

Will Clarke’s mother Fran Greenberry tells his story.

Until he was 10 years old, Will was a happy child, running around, getting his knees dirty.

One day our lives changed in an instant when Will was knocked down by a car. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to bury my head in the sand and become weighed down with ‘what-ifs”. I remember one day reflecting on life and thinking despite all of this, my family all have lives to live and potential to achieve…….INCLUDING WILL, who wasn’t expected to survive the accident. I figured that if he had the fight to live, then I owed it to him to make his life the best it can be.

Will joined the school at Hannahs 9 years ago and has made massive progress. He is now 23 years old.

There is nowhere else like Hannahs that provides the multi disciplinary care with Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists all working as a team. The staff provide Will with gold standard

care and go out of their way to enable Will to live life to the full.

Until recently, Will has been fed through a tube into his stomach. However, with the help of the Speech and Language Therapist at Hannahs, Will has started a program of tasters, where he is given safe, small amounts of soft food to enjoy. It may only be a few teaspoons but this is a major achievement.

Will now lives in a bungalow on site, with 3 girls and 2 lads and they live together as a family. Will and his friends enjoy regular outings, especially the lads nights (the girls are banned!) , film nights and watching live bands – the louder the better and they also like to strut their stuff on the dance floor! I have to phone before I visit Will as invariably he is off doing some activity, He has a better social life than I do!

At Hannahs, disability is not a barrier; the young people are encouraged to achieve their potential.

Tea Dance

Come join the dancing!Saturday 18 November, 2pm onwards, The Great Hall.

Our tea dance is free to attend but tickets are limited. Please contact us on 01626 325800 to book.

Fighting loneliness and isolation with dance

Hannahs is set to host a vintage 1940s style Tea Dance at Seale-Hayne on Saturday 18 November. The inspiration for this free event forms part of our Big 250 anniversary goals of combating loneliness and isolation.

For people of all ages and abilities social isolation can affect their lives in a hugely negative way and often a sense of belonging, fun and laughter, a listening ear and friends can make all the difference.

Bringing our older guests together to revisit the days of their youth, whilst younger guests enjoy the vintage style music we hope to create a lively and welcoming atmosphere where new friendships can be forged and possibly

a few new moves on the dance floor!

The Tea Dance will be a fully accessible event for people of mixed abilities and mobility. One of the best things about dancing is that while you’re having fun moving to music and meeting new people, you’re getting all the health benefits of being active.

Ali Aiken from Simply Great Media said they were co-hosting the event with Hannahs to “provide an opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy the experience of a 1940’s Tea Dance, it is a fantastic way of meeting new people, getting a bit of exercise and for those who don’t wish to shuffle their feet – eat cake and watch”

Hayden Francis and Big Red

Hayden is 17 years old and is a student at South Devon College but spends one day a week at Seale-Hayne in the Big Red music studio. He is studying for his level 3 music certificate with music facilitator Brandon Bolt. His main interests are writing and recording tracks for his band Demon Riders and producing dance music for his role as DJ Bass R1der. He sings with the band and also plays bass guitar. He has been coming to Seale-Hayne for nearly four years and has performed with his band in Big Red Live.

“I love using the Big Red studios, making up tracks and working with Brandon”

Big Red music studio opened in 2011 and has become a thriving commercial business while also supporting people with disabilities. During the day people with disabilities use the facilities. The studio is fully accessible so people of all abilities are able to spend time immersing themselves in music whether it be singing, playing instruments or learning about the music technology. Big Red is a truly creative and inspiring place.

Over 35 bands a week rehearse or record in Big Red ranging from the well-established to up and coming. Renowned folk singer Seth Lakeman has rehearsed in Big Red several times and the BBC have used the facilities for recording. BBC reporter Lucy Siegle from the One Show recorded some TV voiceover material and local Devon band The Summertides recorded four live tracks for a BBC Introducing session. Every evening the studio is a hive of activity.

Able Sharp

Able is 20 years old and is on an assisted internship with The Key at Hannahs. Having left South Devon College in the summer, he now spends three days a week at Seale-Hayne and is following the Pathway to Employment course.

He is currently spending time in different areas around the site but he hopes to have a work placement in the Big Red music studio or Access All Aerials radio studio where he has already spent some time and hosted his own show. Able started going to Friday Inc, the monthly accessible night club at Seale-Hayne, earlier this year and was then given the opportunity to work in the AAA radio studio. He started coming to Seale-Hayne on a weekly basis and has also enjoyed using the hydrotherapy pool and having lunch in the Bistro.

Able lives in Dartington and has a range of disabilities following meningitis as a toddler. However Able has never let his disabilities get in the

way and is a real action man. He loves trying out new sports and making friends. He has been gliding and flying in a hot air balloon and every Friday he goes to the Adaptive Ski Club in Exeter. He also enjoys playing power chair football, riding, going to the gym and swimming. He is a regular at the Junction Youth Club in Newton Abbot where he is a youth leader. He loves mixing dance music and going to music festivals.

“I am really excited about trying out everything Hannahs has to offer. I love music and making friends and I can see there are lots of opportunities to have a busy social life”.

We have received some fantastic continued support this year from a number of businesses including GWR, McClure Solicitors, Chris Kallis Solicitors, Bright Solicitors LLP, Santander and HSBC to name a few.

Earlier this year, we were delighted to be joined also by new supporter organisations including the Insurance Institute of Devon and Cornwall and Applied Automation.

The Insurance Institute has been planning a number of activities, including a boat party for the Plymouth Fireworks championships, an inter-office mad hatters tea party and a gala dinner.

Applied Automation have selected us as their charity of the year and as sponsors for our first ever Amazing Children’s Christmas Party. Managing Director, David Rowe stated: “Hannahs is doing fantastic and much needed work in Devon. I am delighted we will be working with the charity to help raise funds for equipment that will make such a huge difference to children’s lives.”

There are many ways that businesses

can get involved with us to work in a mutually beneficial way:

• Pick Hannahs as Charity of the Year• Sponsor a Hannahs event or

exhibition• Encourage your employees to

fundraise - it’s great for team building and boosting morale

• Donate a percentage of your sales to Hannahs (cause related marketing)

• Organise an event and invite your staff, customers and business friends e.g. a golf day, ball, conference or festival
