Welcome to the “just over the halfway” point of this school year. I know we’ve been dealt our fair share of cold days this year but on average it feels like we’ve got- ten away so far with a pretty mild season. The hill on the elementary playground contin- ues to see a lot of action with the school krazy carpets and I’ll again remind you to keep sending ski pants and snow boots until the season ends. But the warm weather we’re in for the next few days will also make me think to men- tion the need for rubber boots soon. I’ve seen a num- ber of awesome class projects in the halls including play backdrops and Valentines art in the works this week. We have inherited a turtle in grade 3 and I’ve seen plans for Mr. Herman Soup as well. What a fun place to be! It was fantastic to see so many nice final grades on the tran- scripts for the grade 10-12 students after the end of the first semester. For our Grade 12s that means one last se- mester of classes in store for them and then continued plans for life after high school. I’ve connected with many of the students about their plans, and want to encourage others to come see me about Career Cruising information and ideas to help them if they’re still on the fence about what to do after June. Some grade 11s and 12s are also looking at fin- ishing the Youth Apprenticeship program this semester – the benefits give students that finish a big step up with an employer when looking to apprentice in a trade. If you’re interested, see Mr. Tucker about a quick list of the benefits. We also have a handful of students taking ad- vantage of the Career Bootcamps that are being of- fered this year – a series of evenings in designated career areas that help confirm what they want to do after graduat- ing, as well as some Spotlight on Careers – one day events focusing on a specific field. The posters advertising these days are in the hallway outside the senior classrooms and more information and applications are with Mr. Tucker. I’d like to wish Mrs. Koroll our best as she’s started her mater- nity leave this month. Mrs. McCubbing will move to work- ing with the grade 3s full time until the end of June. Welcome to the “just over

the halfway” point of this

school year. I know we’ve

been dealt our fair share of cold days this year but on

average it feels like we’ve got-

ten away so far with a pretty mild season. The hill on the

elementary playground contin-

ues to see a lot of action with

the school krazy carpets and I’ll again remind you to keep

sending ski pants and snow

boots until the season ends. But the warm weather we’re

in for the next few days will

also make me think to men-tion the need for rubber

boots soon. I’ve seen a num-

ber of awesome class projects

in the halls including play backdrops and Valentines art

in the works this week. We

have inherited a turtle in grade 3 and I’ve seen plans for

Mr. Herman Soup as well.

What a fun place to be!

It was fantastic to see so many nice final grades on the tran-

scripts for the grade 10-12

students after the end of the first semester. For our Grade

12s that means one last se-

mester of classes in store for them and then continued

plans for life after high school.

I’ve connected with many of

the students about their plans, and want to encourage others

to come see me about Career

Cruising information and ideas to help them if they’re still on

the fence about what to do

after June. Some grade 11s

and 12s are also looking at fin-

ishing the Youth Apprenticeship

program this semester – the

benefits give students that finish a big step up with an employer

when looking to apprentice in a

trade. If you’re interested, see Mr. Tucker about a quick list of

the benefits. We also have a

handful of students taking ad-

vantage of the Career Bootcamps that are being of-

fered this year – a series of

evenings in designated career areas that help confirm what

they want to do after graduat-

ing, as well as some Spotlight on Careers – one day events

focusing on a specific field. The

posters advertising these days

are in the hallway outside the senior classrooms and more

information and applications are

with Mr. Tucker. I’d like to wish Mrs. Koroll our

best as she’s started her mater-

nity leave this month. Mrs.

McCubbing will move to work-ing with the grade 3s full time

until the end of June. Miss

Vanderpost, who was an intern here last year, has been hired

to do some work in the ele-

mentary classes that Mrs. McCubbing was teaching. Wel-

come Miss Vanderpost.

There are a few days in the

next month I’ll try to help you keep track of. The Winter

break starts next week Feb 18-

26 so please enjoy your Family Day on Feb 20 and the follow-

ing days. The Grade 12 stu-

dents have their Work Experi-

ence week two following the

winter break Feb 27 to March

3 so I wish them well on their

days at their job. K-6 report cards are going out on March

9th. We also have Tri-

Conferences (K-12) the week after that on March 15 and 16

from 5:00-7:30pm – you can

start booking with Mrs. Block

to reserve your interview time. Grade 7-12 report cards

will go out in April.

Students will have a day off next month on March 17th as

well as another for the Teach-

er Prep day on March 24th. Plans are moving ahead for

the Heritage Fair on March

10th.

I know that the grade 7-8 and the grade 9-12 ski trips are

coming up next month on

March 21 and 23 respectively. Notes with the permission

slips and costs will be coming

home soon. Start stretching

Hey, Kids – Bring Your Parents!!

Plant Study with the Grade 3s. We're about to investi-gate how First Nations used/use plants in their daily lives. We have started some Read-er's Workshop activities, where we work on parts of a book, predicting, retell, etc. They love listening to stories!

Art has been a lot of fun in the past month and we've created some masterpieces we'd like to share with you: Mrs. Martineau & The Ks.

Happy February! We enjoyed that warm spell after the break and got out-side lots. It's a good thing we did it then because we've been stuck with a lot of in-door recesses lately! We are still working hard in Science on our collaborative

also learning about forces and magnetism. We have been combining our social studies and art to learn and create artwork of how climate effects the environ-ments and societies of differ-ent places around the world. The 3's have also been learn-ing about spirituality and what makes up their inner spirit or soul. We found our spirit animals and are finish-ing up our 'heart maps' using pictures and words to de-

scribe what we are like on the inside. In math we are finally finish-ing up our addition and sub-traction unit. We will begin our new unit on fractions after the February break! We look forward to this warm weather and will hope-fully be able to take some of our learning outside in the coming weeks!

Mrs. McCubbing & The

Grade Threes

This month the grade 3's have been busy writing sto-ries with detail. We have also continued to work on para-graph writing and will be able to write 3 detailed para-graphs by the end of this month! We have been work-ing on making inferences while we read, and will soon be practicing how to read with expression. In science we continue to mend to the garden with our Kinderpartners and we are

ence we are continuing to

learn about simple ma-

chines. Our sculpting unit in

art is wrapping up. Our final

project has been working

with paper mache. Please

continue to practice basic

math facts with the stu-

dents. Focus on addition,

subtraction, multiplication

and division. It is very im-

portant that the students be

able to know their facts with

automaticity.

The grade 4,5,6 class has been

working very hard on their

Heritage Fair Projects. We will

be starting to present the pro-

jects at the beginning of

March. There have been some

very interesting topics. In Sci-

Poetry. We have done a lot of

reading and discussion on our feelings and how they effect our

decision making processes, and the way they can effect those

around us.

In Social Studies we have been continuing our learning on Fami-

lies, Traditions and Celebrations. Currently we have been talking

about cultural diversity, and will be trying out a few foods from

different cultures.

On February 8th, we celebrated the 100th day of school with

many fun activities. We brain-

Wow! Time is just flying in the

Grade 1/2 room! We can't be-lieve that the break is nearly

here.

We have been doing lots in our classroom the last little while, and

will be switching over to lots of subjects in the coming weeks.

Both the grade 1/2's were work-ing hard in Math learning about

Measurement, and have now fin-ished their units. We will be mov-

ing on to Geometry this week.

In Language Arts we have almost finished up our Unit on Fairy Ta-

les, and will soon be moving on to

stormed 100 words we knew,

performed 100 acts of kindness, and also did some reading, writ-

ing, and math all with 100 as our theme. The kids dressed up as if

they were '100' years old, and

looked great! It was a good day!

We would also like to send out a

big thank you to the parents who were able to come out and help

tie skates on Friday. It was a huge help, and made the afternoon run

so smoothly. We really appreci-

ate it. Thank you!

Grades 1 & 2

Grades 4-6

On March 10, we will be having

our school Heritage Fair. Stu-

dents have been working

through an inquiry project

which explores some aspect of

Canadian Heritage. They will be

displaying their work on tri-fold

boards and will present their

projects to judges. Some pro-

jects are truly amazing!

On March 21, the Grade 7 and

8 classes will be venturing out

to Table Mountain for their an-

nual ski/snowboarding trip.

Currently, we have all the

Grade 7 chaperones we require.

The interest is always high and I

This month has been a busy one!

like to see me to discuss your

child’s progress, please feel free to

contact me at the school. The class

has been wrapping up their study of

fractions in math, and will shortly

be moving on to begin exploring

measurement. In ELA, we are fin-

Grade 11

Well, Semester Two is under

way and the Grade 10’s are SO

happy to have final exams behind
