Its classrooms were in horrendous conditions, not suitable for teaching the school’s 402 students that struggled to keep warm during the cold winters. The total lack of adequate facilities had a sig- nificant negative impact on both the quality of education and the students motivation to learn. Human Practice Foundation’s cooperation with the Head Teacher and school manage- ment, who actively mobilized the community, secured a profound change at Hangpang Secondary School. The school’s’ management team continues to actively raise awareness on the importance of education locally and the enthusiasm that we have seen at Hangpang is already bearing fruit for the children. In only 10 months we finished the construction of a new earthquake-resistant building with 8 classrooms. We further installed a library, a playground, a science and computer lab, a new kitchen, toilets and we run a Teachers’ Training Programme.

A programme to significantly upgrade the quality of education including further training of the teachers and the management as well as student support is running at the school and is already producing results.

The secondary graduation ratio has improved by 27%, enrolment has increased by 16% to 480 students and the school’s dropout ratio has decreased by 50%. The school has been recognised as a District Model School within its area by the national government. Thus, serving as a good example for improvements for other public schools in the district.

This new construction at Hangpang Secondary school was generously funded by two engaged donor families from Sweden.

Sara Wigh, the daughter of one of the donor families travelled from Sweden to Taplejung to participate in the local opening ceremony after the completion of the new school building. We are very grateful for the families’ donations, which our local team put into efficient use making a difference for the schools’ now 480 students.

The local community and children at the school are truly grateful for the tremendous impact the families have had on their lives and their ability to create a promising future for themselves.

These young gentlemen are Asul and Samyog. They are best friends. They connected over similar life experiences as both lost a parent at a very young age. Today, Asul lives with his mother and Samyog lives with his grandparents. Their big dream is to start a company together focused on improving the live-lihood in Taplejung and helping young people and families in situations similar to theirs. As they have both had a difficult start in life they want to make sure the children of the community have some-thing to believe in.

Asul wants to study business and Samyog wants to study energy technologies. With the new access to a library and a science & computer lab they both believe that they will be able to attend university and achieve their dream of building a company together if they study hard. Before the new facilities were installed such dreams were be-yond their reach.
