Our Chapter rarely does fundraising, but some gifts are too generous to turn down. Recently Col. Rich Graham, Wing Commander author of five books on the SR-71, offered and hour of his time to give a personal tour of the SR-71 display at the Frontiers of Flight Museum including time in the front seat of the SR-71 simulator.

So, we are using Rich’s gift to raise funds for our Chapter members. We plan to use this money to aid builders and flyers to safely complete and fly their aircraft. We plan on doing this through expanding our tool library. The library consists of tools that a builder seldom needs but is too expensive to own. Some of these tools include the aircraft scales, fresh air respirator for those wishing to paint their own plane, and instrument hole punches to name a few. We recently added a tensiometer to our tool bin. One of the tools that needs replacing is our borescope, which is a vintage tool that is very delicate and requires frequent repair.

To raise those funds, we plan to raffle Rich’s gift. We will sell 100 tickets at $10 per ticket, giving every ticket a 1 in 100 chance of winning. We will draw the winning ticket at our Christmas Party on Monday Dec 4th. It is very simple to participate. All the tickets will be business card sized that have on them your name and contact information (either your cell number or email address). Send you money and cards to Sam Cooper (address on page 12) who will be counting the number of entries (limited to 100). If you don’t have the cards send the money and your info and we will put them on a card and toss it in the hopper. Only the first hundred entries get a shot at the prize.

We thank Rich Graham for his generosity of his time. It is quite special. The prize also includes your admission into the FOF Museum. I know if I win I will have my books ready to be autographed. This is truly a unique experience. Don’t miss out on your chance.

It is time to get those reservations in for this year’s party. Sam Cooper can take your reservation. [email protected]

The date is Monday, Dec 4th, 2017. Yes, Monday! We were unable to get our normal Tuesday and we

didn’t want to move it later in the month. So, Monday was our best option. Thanks goes to Jim Canniff who worked out all the details for us.

We are going back to the same Outback Steakhouse (1509 N Central Expy, Plano, TX 75075) we had it at last year with the only difference this year is we have the room from 5:30 PM on so we can gather early to chat.

The price for a ticket is the same as last year $20. The Outback managers suggested we use the same

serving plan as last year, and that is when a group takes their seats a server will take their order.

The menu last year worked great so it is also the same.  Salad:House or Caesar

Outback Special:6 oz Sirloin seasoned and seared on our flat top grill to lock in the flavor.

Chicken on the Barbie:8 oz Grilled Chicken Breast seasoned and cooked on our wood fire grill.

Perfectly Grilled Salmon:7 oz Filet of Salmon seasoned and cooked on our wood fire grill.

The Plains of Idaho

Within minutes of the takeoff from Rexburg, the Snake River comes into view again. The river nourishes vast fields.

Near Pocatello, ID, American Falls comes into view, with large dam and power generation station.

Next is Shoshone Falls; see the photo at the beginning of this post. Just after Shoshone Falls, the elegant, indeed delicate looking, Perrine Bridge connects the two sides of the river. Large areas of Idaho continue to be irrigated by the river.

Once we have passed Boise, ID, we turn west and after brief flight through mountainous terrain, land at Baker City, OR. The FBO provides a hangar and a courtesy car. Indeed, this is a small but busy airport, with plenty of flight activity, instruction, and plane maintenance.Grand Canyon of the Snake River

After an early takeoff from Baker City, we return to the Snake River for a spectacular trip along the Grand Canyon of the Snake River. On the way, we pass a large mining operation.

Soon we see that the name "Grand Canyon" is no exaggeration: Steep cliffs and rugged terrain force the river into a deep gorge even before we get to the official start of the Grand Canyon.

The Oxbow Dam is nestled into a U-turn of the river.

Then the Grand Canyon begins. Photography is difficult. We use the autopilot to fly circles and turn on the Terrain option of the Garmin Pilot to color portions of the map:

red (= don't go there), yellow (= caution is advised), green (= altitude is safe), and no added color (= no problem whatsoever).

When we come to the end of the Grand Canyon, we leave the Snake River since we saw the remaining portion when

we traced the route of the Lewis and Clark Expedition many years ago.

We turn left, going upstream the Grande Ronde River. It loves to meander.

We refuel in Hermiston, OR, then stay with friends Mary and Gene in Redmond, OR, for a great visit. Leading Edge, the FBO of the Roberts Field airport in Redmond, provides a hangar and first-rate service.Going Home

It's time to fly home. The stop of the first day is Brigham City, UT, where FBO Bennie of the Mountain Air Jet Center provides a hangar and courtesy car.

Next is Montrose, CO. Atlantic, the large FBO, takes pains to provide excellent service not just for corporate jets but also for private pilots. They also supply hangar space.

The third and last day is a monster schedule of more than 9 1/2 hours of flying from Montrose to Dallas. While still climbing out from Montrose at 6:30 am MDT, we have a magnificent view of the Blue Mesa Reservoir.

In Oklahoma and Texas rain and low ceilings are thrown in for good measure, as if the day wasn't tiring enough. Despite detours forced by the weather, we land at Aero Country airport with plenty of daylight to spare.

In total, we have flown 45 hours, using 148 gallons of fuel. The burn rate of 3.3 gal/hr is an amazing performance of the 80 hp Rotax 912 engine. Equally astounding, the engine has now run for 1,860 hrs during 22 years without any work on cylinders, valves, water pump, alternator, ignition, etc.

Maybe our low-rpm use of the engine, where, due to the very efficient Sensenich propeller, we can cruise at 4,400-4,500 rpm even at high altitude, has something to do with this astonishing reliability.

Dealing with the ADS-B OptionsBy Marvin Brott and Aircrew

We have seen many briefings and the internet is filled with information on ADS-B but what is needed is a little perspective on what and how to implement this FAA January 1, 2020 mandate. For the past several years a group of Chapter 168 members at Aero Country have been holding ADS-B discussions and have implemented several approaches. So, what have we learned?

A little background. ADS-B, which uses GPS satellites instead of ground-based relatively imprecise radar to determine aircraft location, is the key technology behind the FAA’s Next Generation Air Traffic Control System. And the FAA has mandated that in two years ADS-B Out equipment must be installed and working. Which raises the question, will ATC be ready to utilize GPS for aircraft positioning? I ask because apparently most ATC facilities do not yet have any ADS-B.

In order to get an understanding of what ADS-B is all about, let’s start by looking at Figure 1. Yes, I know, the aircraft at the top looks suspiciously like an RV-8. While there are many puzzling words, ADS-B is simply a transition from Radar to GPS for air space positioning. So, we are making a big jump from radar Mode C transponders on the left to ADS-B Out transmitters on the right. Radar Modes C & S positioning information is being feed through the TIS-B system to ADS-B out ground transmitters (follow the arrows). Radar feed to ADS-B is happening now and will be a required back-up for many years. If you have ADS-B In, you will see both radar and GPS position traffic. Finally, the two-aircraft nose to nose are directly communicating ADS-B Out/In information.

Figure 1 illustrates the big transition, but the implementation for aircraft owners is a lot more confusing. Over the last few years a vast number of options have become available.

We are asking ourselves two questions: 1) “What equipment will I need in my aircraft?” And 2) “How much will it cost?” And to get some answers we need to start with whether it is an Experimental or Certified aircraft? Next are we starting with a new panel or are we forced to upgrade a panel and invest in new technology just to meet the mandate. And what is an acceptable cost to be invested into this aircraft?

Figure 2 illustrates the options for compliance to the mandate that we at Aero Country have implemented, except

for number (4) which we will get to later. ADS-B components may be divided into four functional areas. First, it starts with a WAAS GPS positioning source. The GPS must meet the FAA’s performance requirements. If it is compliant but not TSO’d, it applies only to Experimentals and LSAs. TSO is the FAA’S authorization approval for both design and production. And we are talking serious money for this approval. I believe this TSO cost issue is a big stumbling block to achieving a 2020 mandate.

The second function is the ADS-B transmitter which allows you to automatically transmit more accurate and useful traffic surveillance data – including aircraft flight ID, position, altitude, velocity, climb/descent, and heading information. These transmitters can come either panel mounted or remote mounted.

Next is the ADS-B In capability which has a wide range of possibilities. Since it is simply a radio receiver, there are many low-cost options for receiving traffic and weather information. Finally displaying the received information is sort of a difficult problem. If you have a Multi-Function display as in a G3X or SkyView installation the problem is

solved. But with no panel space the other option is an iPad or a portable GPS like a Garmin 696.

Now let’s look at the yellow numbered solutions. Number one has been implemented several times at Aero Country for Cessna’s and Bonanza’s. It’s a natural, as you replace your existing GTX 327 Mode C Transponder with a Garmin GTX 345. An all-in-one Transponder Solution for ADS-B “Out” and “In”. It can be driven by a GNT 650 WAAS GPS compliant navigation system that is already in the panel or go for the optional built-in GPS in the GTX 345. This is a simple, minimally intrusive ADS-B solution to meet the needs of a certified plane. Total cost is about 5K plus installation. Total cost may be an issue as a $6K to $8K solutions may not be too appealing when applied to a low value aircraft.

Yellow number two is the Garmin solution implemented by Richard Wingfield in his RV-14. His GTN 650 IFR capable Nav/Com, plus GTX 23 Out transponder and the GDL 39 In all became part of the integrated G3X system. The Garmin G3X system is directed towards the experimental aircraft. So, the cost of just the ADS-B was about half the GTX 345 approach.

Yellow number three is the Dynon SkyView solution that was implemented in my RV-8. As in the G3X approach, the SkyView components are remotely integrated behind the SkyView D1000 touch display. Several years ago, Richard Wingfield, an early adopter, showed me his ADS-B capabilities in his Bonanza. While interesting, at the time I felt it was something that was not worthy of the expenditure. Years later as I launched into the SkyView upgrade, the ADS-B just fell into place. Cost was similar to Garmin G3X, about 3K.

All of these systems have worked perfectly from the start. My software configuration of the ADS B output was very simple. Early this year it was a hassle to verify that your ADS-B was working. You had to fill out some paperwork, schedule a flight with the FAA and then sometime later they would contact you with a report. They realized the problem and fixed

it with the Public ADS-B Performance Report Request. Now go to the internet and fill out a simple form with the date of a past flight you want graded. Thirty minutes later the FAA sends an e-mail with the results. (https://adsbperformance.faa.gov/PAPRRequest.aspx)

While I was at Oshkosh, the FAA pavilion offered a service of checking to see if your ADS B is meeting requirements. They requested my N number and returned with my name, airplane make and a complete log of all my ADS-B flights since installed. It looked like a log book. When you click on a particular flight date it comes up with a map and a track of that flight. His comment was, “Your ASD B has been working since last February.” Needless to say, I walked out of the pavilion thinking about how wonderful to see my detailed history of flight “i.e. log book” and how some may want to remain anonymous. If you bust Class B airspace, there will be a record.

Looking at the ADS-B solutions, we in the Experimental world really have it good. We can do our own install with no FAA approval required. And we are

allowed to purchase uncertified systems but compliant with the requirements of 14 CFR 91.227. For uncertified equipment, you should obtain a statement of compliance from the supplier. It seems peculiar that an RV-8 can fly in the same airspace with a Cessna. Makes no sense to have two classes of aircraft doing the same thing under different requirements.

My advice for ADS B has always been to wait as long as possible before making a move as each succeeding year the options get better. Buying electronics early has always been a mistake as new technology is constantly rolling out. The third Garmin option, yellow number 4, is where it really gets interesting for your certified aircraft. “How much will it cost” has always been the big issue. Garmin has been the leader with solutions to ADS-B and one week before Oshkosh they announced a game-changer with the GDL 82. To install you disconnect the cable from your existing Mode C transponder at the antenna and plug into the GDL 82 remote box. Connect a new cable from the GDL 82 to that existing antenna. Finally, connect a third cable to a WAAS GPS, which could be on the instrument panel. The install might take an afternoon. And the cost is $1800.

Recently announced by uAvionix is a ADS-B Out solution named the SkyBeacon. They claimed it is the world’s first zero-cost ADS-B Out install solution meeting the FAA’s 2020 ADS-B requirements. This approach is in the same game changer class as the GDL 82. Remove the current wingtip position light and replace it with the SkyBeacon. The unit includes a WAAS GPS looking up while the UAT antenna looks down. The SkyBeacon is affordable, $1500. And they are working to make it available for certified aircraft via the Approved Model List Supplemental Type Certificate (AML-STC). Check advisory circular (AC) No. 20-180. They are following the path that EAA/Dynon/Garmin blazed for the D10 and G5 certified aircraft applications. Thereby eliminating the high cost of the TSO path with AML-STC. Hope this approach is successful.

A third company at Oshkosh was selling something similar to the SkyBeacon, was the iLevil Beacon. At the moment all three are seeking approval from the FAA for certified aircraft.

After we saw the announcement for the GDL 82, we expected to see a lot of buzz and press for these solutions to ADS-B. We saw and heard nothing. Let’s wait and see how the FAA handles these approaches for certified aircraft. So, waiting another year to install for the mandate should hopefully prove very fruitful.

Finally, many pilots have installed one of the many ADS-B In solutions without the “Out” functionality. Hence traffic and weather become available. Traffic is great, but what we are really interested in is collision avoidance. And you do not get that unless ADS-B out capability exists to

provide a personal “hockey puck” around you. There could be no traffic displaying ahead of you, nothing at all, and all of a sudden, there’s an airplane right in front of you. The above picture is a SkyView display of your plane and the traffic around you. The table below provides a summary of What You Have and What You will See.

While moving to GPS satellites for positioning is certainly the technology of the future, it seems like the justification for NextGen ATC is totally oriented towards the airlines. They use words like, “planes will be able to fly closer together, take more direct routes and avoid delays caused by airport “stacking” as planes wait for an open runway”. There is no mention of the benefits for GA. If you ask, their response is, free traffic (collision avoidance) and weather will be available. The benefits for GA in most areas of the country are uncertain. And the cost to implement plus the hard date mandate appears to be an issue.

Project Update - OnexMichael Stephan

It wouldn’t be a complete newsletter without a project update. This month I travelled to Brad Roberts house to get an update on

his single seat, Aerovee powered Onex kit.

Brad has his project very close to finished. Since last I saw it, he has installed the controls as well as the electrical system. he has finished most of the firewall forward installation.

A few interesting details. The instrument panel is completed as shown. An MGL EFIS does all the displays for all the equipment except for the MGL radio. The engine monitor sits forward of the firewall reducing the number of wires that need to penetrate the firewall. The Onex looks great. Sonex makes a very good kit. Impressed. Good work Brad.
