C ooking outside meanseating and entertainingstay alfresco, anda wood-fired oven gives a
different taste to the classic barbecue.
This DIY installation fromwww.woodywoodfiredovens.com.au,is $3100 for the oven kit, including a1000 x 1250mm oven and extra rackfor vegies. The supporting platformand tile surround are separate.
The oven has a heat-resistant base,but you need to build a raised supportplatform of limestone, concrete orbricks. This one has a 100mm-thickconcrete slab with three walls of Hebel autoclaved aerated concrete(AAC) blocks. Steel lintels span thewalls to support Hebel floor panels.

Use dry wood to build a fire inthe centre, when the coals arehot push them to the backand add more wood.
Use 50mm x 14g galvanised roofingscrews or bugle-headed battenscrews to fix angle brackets to theACC blocks and panels. The flooringpanels are secured to the wallwith 150mm x 14g galvanisedbugle-headed batten screws.

1 Build the support basePour a concrete base withF52 reinforcing mesh, measuring1800 x 1800mm and 100mm thick.Leave it to dry, then lay the threewalls of the base using four rowsof 600 x 200 x 100mm ACC blocks.
2 Attach the frontCut a crossbeam and twouprights from railway sleepers. Securethe uprights to the base with metalangle brackets. Position the crossbeamto be level with the tiles that are putdown later, securing to the uprightsand panels with angle brackets.
3 Add lintels and panelsCut four 75 x 50mm-widenotches at 30mm deep on theinside of the walls to hold two steellintels. Position the lintels so theACC panels meet on the centre-line,securing with adhesive and screws.
1 Assemble the oven floorPosition the floor and surroundtiles with the side sections. Removethe tiles and prop up the arch, then
pour perlite into the base, screedingit level. Relay the tiles and positionthe faceplate 10mm inside the front,supporting it with bricks.
2 Set up the timber cradlesPosition the timber cradleupright at the ends, spaced to matchthe timber slats, and hold with bricks.
Position a 1200mm spirit levelfrom the back to the front faceplate,raise the cradle and pack it to sitat the height of the spirit level.
3Complete the brickworkLay three rows in a brick-bond
pattern, bevel edges down thenposition the support rail. Complete thebrickwork with the last two rows in astack-bond pattern. Plumb the chimneyand cover the oven with wire mesh.
4Apply the renderUse gloves to apply a 30mm-thick
coat of render. Leave it to dry fora day then fire the oven three timesto dry the render. Cover with the heatblanket and apply a second coat of render, and a third optional coat.

Treat the ACC panels surroundingthe oven with a coat of primerand two coats of waterproofing.
Mark out the decorative tilelayout and cut the tiles. Mix uptile adhesive, spreading it witha 10mm notched trowel to laythe tiles and tap to a level finish.
Apply adhesive to the back ofthe vertical tiles and positionthem on the waterproofed surfacebeneath the oven door. Groutbetween the tiles and wipe clean
with a thick sponge and water.
