Prevention is KeyWith summer cases, there are around 250 cases reported annually—
• Cases peak during and after midterms and finals and as major projects or papers are due.
• When and why do students cheat?
• What can you do to prevent academic misconduct?

Strategies to Try• Tell students about the
CLAS Code of Academic Honesty.• Ask students to sign the CLAS Code of
Academic Honesty before taking an exam or writing a paper.
• Discuss cheating with students, helping them to look at the larger picture.
• Make assignments cheat-proof.• Make sure all backpacks, laptops,
phones, books, notebooks, papers are left under the desk or in the front of the room.
• Announce that students are expected to remain in the room until they turn in their examinations.
• Require students to sit in alternate rows, if possible.
• Use assigned seating; split up friends.• Use different questions or the same
questions scrambled. Change exams and topics often.
• Collect all copies of the exam when students are done, thus assuring exams are not posted online by a student.
• Check student IDs when handing out the exam and answer sheets since some students take the test for another student.
• Give each student only one answer sheet since students have been known to submit a second answer sheet for another student.
• Actively proctor the exam by walking up and down the rows; the room should never be left unattended.
• Use different exams if students take the exam on different days or at different times.
• Stop cheating as soon as it is seen; move the student to a new location and note the name.
• Use Turnitin for take-home exams or for papers, available as a feature on the ICON dropbox.

CLAS Report of Academic MisconductBriefly describe the incident of academic misconduct and your evidence:
Briefly describe your contact with the student and the student's perception of the incident:
According to CLAS policy, an F grade may be given for any assignment showing evidence of cheating. Instructors may also assign a higher grade if warranted. CLAS does not allow an F to be given for an entire class because of academic misconduct without first consulting with the Associate Dean. Please describe below what grade adjustments you have made in this case:
The online reporting form may be found on the CLAS web site under For Faculty>Teaching Policies>Academic Misconduct.
