deveIopment are stressed ahhough functional interpretation is adduced where requisite to cIarify the principIes of structure.

There is naturaIIy some irreguIarity in the emphasis pIaced upon topics, but taken as a whole the voIume constitutes an acceptable, usefu1 textbook. ParticuIarIy commendabIe is the variety, profusion, and usefuIness of the ihustrations which are cIear and in a11 instances serve to clarify the text. The book’s vaIue for teachers is enhanced by the incmsion of a chapter on Laboratory Exercises, with an abundance of drawings to assist students in interpreting the resuIts of their Iaboratory studies.

A BIPOLAR THEORY OF LIVING PROCESSES. By George W. CriIe. Svo. CIoth. Price, $5. Pp. 387; iIIus. N. Y.: MacmiIIan Co., 1926.

hlost theories are advanced by their authors to expIain a11 the known facts in their partic- mar category. CriIe undertook what might be caIIed, in the vernacuIar, “some job” when he tackIed an expIanation of life. His bipoIar “electric battery” theory of anima1 function, interesting and suggestive though it be, faIIs far short of acceptabiIity.

In spite of a11 the caIcuIus and determinations to the fifth decimal he na’iveIy remarks that “final proof is Iacking in practicahy every point.”

Has CriIe aIIowed his fancy to meander into the Iimbo of the unknown as a reIaxation from the very strenuous and practica1 work of a surgeon, or, as Jennings surmises, has he deIiberateIy pIaced his cfever tongue in his cheek and written this book as a parody on much of the research that encumbers medica literature? In either case it is an interesting reveIation of his fine imagination. It deserves consideration for the coIIecting and marshal- Iing of hosts of facts, and aIso because, right or wrong, CriIe is here, as aIways, a stimuIator of medica thought, an inspirer into the reaIms of research, a physician-philosopher.

RATIONAL GLAND THERAPY FOR WOMEN. ParticuIarIy in ReIation to Menstruation. By I. WnnIess Dickson, M.B., F.R.c.s., etc. r2mo. CIoth. Price, $2.00. Pp. 96. N. Y. : PauI B. Hoeber, Inc., 1926.

This IittIe book is based on the cIinica1 observations of the author with occasiona references to the Iiterature prior to 19x7. It

has the shortcomings of so much pureIy cIinical Iiterature in that the observations are recorded and inferences are drawn without adequate critique.

The absence of any reference to the recent briIIiant work of Robert Frank, of Evans, and of Stockard is diffrcuIt to expIain and caIIs for an earIy revision.

HANDBUCH DER BIOLOGISCHEN ARBEITS- METHODEN. By Geh. Med.-Rat Prof. Dr. Emil Abderhalden, Direktor des Physiolo- gischen Instituts der UniversitLt HaIIe a. d. Saale. This is a vaIuabIe and timeIy addition to Abderhalden’s monumenta text. The present great interest in Iiver function wiI1 insure frequent reference to its pages, wherever physioIogica1 and experimenta probIems are being investigated.

Its deaIs with test injections of the portal vein and with other chemica1 tests of liver function, the execution of Eck fistulae, Iiver extirpation in geese and dogs, PavIoff fistuIae and the comparative study of digestion, a11 by distinguished authorities.

This textbook is an achievement of which American Medicine may be proud. Probably more great textbooks have been written on syphiIis than on any other one disease, hut they were written before the discovery of the Spirochaeta paIIida, the introduction of sal- varsan, the experimenta study of the disease in animaIs, and of our present understanding
