Medical/Dental Preparatory Program

Dear Medical/Dental Preparatory Program Participants,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative (Aetna HPPI) sponsored by the

Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs at UConn Health. The Aetna HPPI is a formal consortium offering

a comprehensive program of educational enrichment and support activities for students of diverse backgrounds. This

initiative, comprised of a pipeline of academic and research programs, continues to be instrumental in increasing the

numbers of students from diverse backgrounds applying to and matriculating to medical or dental school, or graduate

programs in the biomedical sciences. We appreciate the continued support of faculty and staff who help to make these

programs successful each year.

This handbook is designed to better acquaint you with the on-line curriculum of the Medical/Dental Preparatory Program

and the rules, expectations, and policies of the program and the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs. It

is important that you review the materials included in this handbook in order to gain the full benefits of participating in

this program. The faculty and staff of the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs are available to assist you

throughout your time in the program. It is our goal to provide a continuous mentoring and support system for students

not only throughout the duration of the program but also throughout their academic and professional endeavors.

We hope that you will find the Medical/Dental Preparatory Program insightful and enriching as you continue on your

path towards becoming a health professional. Through your participation in this summer enrichment program, you will

be better prepared and equipped for future health careers.

Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative

Medical/Dental Preparatory Program

General Description

The Medical/Dental Preparatory Program is designed for college sophomores, juniors, seniors or recent

graduates.

This six-week summer program consists of two tracks:

Track 1: The Medical/Dental Preparatory Program Track 1 is a MCAT/DAT Preparation

Program created for students who will be taking the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

or Dental Admission Test (DAT). The program focuses on MCAT or DAT test preparation

and information on the medical or dental school admissions process and professional

development. Students will be provided with all materials for MCAT or DAT preparation.

Tutors will also be available to students for both the MCAT and DAT preparation. They will

be available throughout the day for any assistance in preparing for the MCAT or DAT as well

as for programmatic instructions. The 2020 program for both the MCAT and DAT

preparation will be delivered virtually through an online platform.

Track 2: The Medical/Dental Preparatory Program Track 2 is the Basic Medical Science

Program (BMS) designated for all other students not on Track 1. This track consists of a BMS

course emphasizing essential principles of cell and molecular biology correlated to team-based

learning exercises and case studies. Clinical experiences through a seminar series and

professional development exercises are also presented. Students will be provided with all

materials for the BMS course. Tutors and will also be available to students for the BMS course.

They will be available throughout the day for any assistance for the course as well as for

programmatic instructions. The 2020 BMS program will be delivered virtually through an

online platform.

This program has two purposes:

(1) to facilitate the entry of these students into medical and dental schools by improving their performance on admissions tests and through professional development activities

(2) to increase the retention of successful matriculants to professional schools through early

exposure to professional education

Program Expectations & Professionalism

All participants are expected to dress in an appropriate and professional manner. Business casual and casual

clothing is appropriate for classroom settings. All participants are also expected to participate in all program

activities and conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. This includes logging in to all virtual

sessions on time. Any technical issues regarding any sessions should be reported immediately to the respective

tutors and jan figueroa ([email protected]). Please note that vacation and other activities cannot be scheduled

during the course of the program as it is expected that you will devote your time to the program. Successful

completion of the Medical/Dental Preparatory program is based upon the fulfillment of all program

requirements. Failure to complete the program will result in the forfeit of stipend. All participants are expected

to act responsibly and in the best interest of faculty, students, and staff.

Program Schedules

Monday, June 22nd: Orientation On June 22nd participants will receive an orientation for the program by the Department of Health Career

Opportunity Programs.

Monday Seminars: All participants are expected to participate in the Monday seminars scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. from June 22nd to July 13th.

MCAT, DAT, and BMS Seminars: All participants are expected to participate in their track-specific program (MCAT, DAT, or BMS) seminar during the program. Please see your program specific schedule for the day and time of the seminar.

Friday, July 31st: Program Closing Ceremony The Virtual Closing Ceremony for the Medical/Dental Preparatory Program sponsored by the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. and end at 2:00 p.m. *Note: The following schedules are specific to each track of the Medical/Dental Preparatory Program.

Facts about UConn Health
