The 2015 season looks very similar to recent years in that we had “a bad day at the office” in the first round of The Cricketer Cup, being soundly beaten by Bedford. We then had a successful tour with two high scoring games against Charterhouse, the first of which we lost in a run chase and the second we had the better of a draw, and then won all the games played on the Eastbourne leg . We continue to suffer from an element of poor luck in The Cricketer Cup but for 2016 we are drawn at the top of the second half so potentially have home advantage all the way through to the semi-final. It would be nice to have some strong support for the first round against Sherborne Pilgrims on The Upper on Sunday 12th June - we are due a good run.

The tour was well supported and we have introduced a new, higher level of subsidy for those players Under 27. I hope that this will ensure more younger players come on tour and that cost is not a major barrier. We have been able to fund this higher subsidy from the income generated by the Investment Fund, to which so many older Rovers gave generously during our 150th year in 2013 and to the 200 Club which has expanded in size and profitability. If it works as intended this income will give a new lease of life to our tour in an age when such things are becoming more difficult to sustain. Whilst on this subject I want to pass on the thanks of all Rovers to Stu Peters who match manages the tour. It is a tough job in this age but he has turned out good sides and they have played good cricket with obvious enjoyment. He intends to stand back a little in the future but he has set a standard that we must try to maintain.

We continue to arrange a couple of golf fixtures to attract back those who no longer play cricket, at Luffenham on 27th May against OUGS and on tour on Friday 15th July. Please do try and support these fixtures. They are a lot of fun and it is so nice to see old friends. Your Club is in rude health, all things considered. Morale is excellent, the finances are very strong and we are fortunate to have an excellent team of officers and others who work effectively and quietly to make things happen. The core of the Club is the playing membership and everything is now geared to make it as attractive as possible for them to play for the Rovers. We live in a challenging world with many attractions outside cricket tours but we are well placed to face those challenges and to strengthen our fixture list.

Floreat!

Uppingham Rovers Cricket Club

THE CRICKETER CUP 2015 1st ROUND v OLD BEDFORDIANS Bedford College, June 15th

Bedford School has produced Nobel Prize winners, recipients of the Victoria Cross, twenty-four rugby internationals, winners of seven Olympic gold medals, one England Cricket Captain and several other cricketers of note. Fortunately for the Uppingham Rovers – none of the above were playing. Unfortunately, Bedford School has approximately 220 per year group, all boys, so you are likely to find a few others who can hold a bat!

Straight off the plane from a stag do in Poland, The Rovers captain Chris Bennett-Baggs called heads, chose to field, backing his side to chase down anything. For those who know the Bedford ground well, the outfield is lighting, the boundary is short and Bedford supposedly (according to the records) has never produced any bowler of great note. To add to this theory - earlier that summer - James Kettleborough a 6th former at Bedford School had broken Alistair Cook’s school batting record scoring 4,396 [17 Centuries and two double-hundreds] during his time at the school, suggesting the batting track would hold together.

How wrong the Rovers Captain was. Though the pitch did hold together, the other elements contributing to his theory did not.

Will Aitkenhead [47 runs from 75 balls] and Will Notley 12 runs from 20 balls] opened the batting for Bedford. The first wicket fell 27 minutes in to the day. This was the highlight

of Uppingham’s performance and if I could cut this report short I would.

After getting the first wicket, fearless Elliot Prior [9 Overs, 65 Runs, 3 Wickets] charged in and hit the deck hard for the Rovers. Unfortunately, Sam Kumar [100 from 49 Balls] hit that ball harder and sent Uppingham’s attack to every part of the surrounding Bedford City Centre. 12 Fours, and Seven 6’s. His stature didn’t lie – he wasn’t a fan of running. Kumar eventually fell to the wile and guile of Otto Esse [10 overs, 56 Runs, 1 wicket].

Although Kumar was impressive, Christian Davies [103 from 78] and James Steadman [46 of 39], Bedford’s number 4 and 6 showed a different style of batting and masterfully took Bedford’s total to 393 for 9 off 50 overs. Other Bowling figures included:

Angus Barton [5 overs, 27 runs, 0 wickets] Tom Kennedy [10 overs, 90 Runs, 2 wickets]. Ben Aspell [10 overs, 79 runs, 1 wicket] Ben Crowder [3 Overs, 45 runs, 0 wickets]

The Rovers reply didn’t start well as Otto Esse [0] and Louis Frankel [0] both left straight balls within the first over, leaving a confused Chris Bennett-Baggs standing at the other end.

I would say that Bennett-Baggs [59 off 46 balls] and Henry Hughes [34 off 40 balls] went about trying to rebuild the innings, however the Rover’s had yet to build anything. The pair took the total to 104 for 2 off 16 overs, only just behind the required run rate. Unfortunately, in the next 2 overs Hughes hooked one to deep square leg and BB edged one to the keeper. Again, Uppingham Rovers were on the back foot. Tom Kennedy [25 off 23 balls] and Ben Aspell [39 off 40 balls] began the legitimate rebuild well and moved the score on to 183 – 6 after 27 overs. The tail was required to wag.

Messrs Stu Peters [21 off 15 balls], Ben Crowder [14 off 11 balls], A Barton [8 from 12

Uppingham Rovers v Repton Pilgrims Repton, Sunday 17th May

A new season and a new fixture. The Repton Pilgrims kindly invited us to play them in a one-off game to celebrate the 150th year of the two schools playing each other. Repton had won the schoolboy game the day before and now it was the turn of the old boys.

Duncan Kennedy volunteered to run the side, a slightly tricky proposition with the old boys match at Uppingham against the school the following week - two weeks on the bounce for the London players travelling North inevitably put pressure on resources. However, the clever recruitment of an experienced Midlands contingent made up for this and so Aspell, Fowler, Timm, Barrow and Sharrock formed the engine room of the Rovers team – in addition young Eli Prior (who lives in Uppingham) came all the way from university in Brighton without being able to drive a car – a good effort! The Rovers were greeted by a breezy overcast day and a couple of very tired Reptonians who had partied in Derby all night long and seemed very keen to bat first. The last time these two sides met at Repton in the Cricketer Cup folklore has it that Uppingham won the toss elected to bat, (headmaster Lewin still thinks it was the right thing to do) were bowled out by lunch and match done by tea. Kennedy having not played on that fateful day but a great historian of such events negotiated a bowl claiming he had a weak and rather old Rovers side who wanted to take part in the day but also wanting the game to last past tea time!

The young thruster Eli Prior ,with rumours of a modelling contract as the new face of Top Shop (or is it Poundland?), came steaming in with the new ball and quickly made the Repton openers hop about as the overcast condition made batting tricky. With the “team Prior” support staff watching on (proud Mum and Dad) he bowled a quick wide full toss which was dispatched at mighty speed through the gully region only for the mercurial hands of Fowler to pluck the ball from above his head to pull off a stunning catch, much to the amazement of the batsmen but not the Rovers. Chris Timm was tossed the new ball from the bottom end and rolling in like a steam train in labour delivered a first ball which was dangerously close to not making it up the 22 yard pitch. The “Old Badger” mumbling that he had bowled 14 overs on the bounce the day before and was a tad stiff went back to his mark to try again and sure enough ball by ball things improved and the wise old goat was soon back to his measly best with a bit of zip and bounce by the end of the over (whatever happened to warming up?).

Prior knocked over the first 3 Repton batsmen all of whom were modelling various important looking badges on shirts suggesting that they were proper cricketers. He was wobbling the ball both ways at speed and to his credit bowled into that corridor that no one likes too much of early in an innings. At 30 for 3 and the first drinks break the Rovers looked rather pleased with themselves. The watching Rovers “barmy army” of Howeson, Ashworth and Stroud were joined by Sir David Samworth and David Leppington and all seemed suitably satisfied after the early exchanges. Sadly, all the Rovers had done was bring to the crease a colossus of a young man called Cosford who also had yet more badges on his very large shirt. After a circumspect start the rotund youngster quickly started dealing in big boundaries. The scorebook will not tell you there was a missed stumping off the bowling of Aspell who bowled a great little spell or that he was let off a caught and bowled by “weasy Kid” Otto (who, quite sensibly, took his hands out of the way for fear of major finger breakage) but what the scorebook will also not tell you is he hit every bowler wherever he wanted and whenever he wanted. There were no slog shots but quality clean straight hitting which was admired by all. The Chapel and the housing over the road all got a pounding from the big man and in his 50 run stand with Murrall

his partner contributed a big fat zero! “Give him the single” was the obvious cry from our watching legends and he did take the odd single but only after hitting the first few balls an over into oblivion.

The skipper tried various options on the bowling front and the only possible hope was that Cosford would smell the bisto, want to tuck into a big lunch and not want to bat after it! The hunch proved correct as he smashed another ball high in the air luckily this time with an 8 iron and was gratefully caught by Barrow to the great relief of all Rovers present for a very memorable 127 off just 74 balls. Lunch came with a score of 175 for 4 off but only off 25 overs. The rather sheepish and shell-shocked Rovers tucked into some fine chicken pasta and delicious “Cloudy Bay” all provided gratis by our kind hosts. A debrief on the mornings play reflected on how good the first hour was and how quickly it went wrong in the second!

Cleverly, lunch went on for an hour taking a little time out of the game meaning less fielding and less runs to chase. A good spell from Bobby Barrow straight after the interval helped the cause but the mazy run up of “Symsey”, fresh from the Rosslyn Park 7’s the day before, confused only himself and so the Pilgrims carried on their merry way with Murrall becalmed pre-lunch now becoming the aggressor. With the wicket flattening out it just became a question of how many runs and how long before the declaration. At 254 for 5 the Repton skipper gave his instructions - the declaration representing a stiff challenge and with 20 overs from 5 pm it looked like the Rovers would have about 45 overs to chase down the runs. A lovely tea made it in reality 40 overs but the troops didn’t know this at the time as Peters piled into the scones and coffee cake while BB was working the room for business contacts “Boris Bikes for schools “on his mind. The

usual Rovers banter suggested the target was achievable but like all targets slightly out of grasp unless someone played a big innings.

BB and Sharrock opened the batting with BB, despite a lack of cricket, looking in fine form and was very positive from the start - with some attractive strokes the ball was soon racing to the boundary. It was still a good pitch, the outfield quick and with the boundary small on one side - so despite Shazzler Sharrock struggling to see the ball (and when he did it was the size of a pea) the scoreboard kept ticking over. The running between the wickets despite a bit of extra winter timber on the Shaz was excellent, the bad ball despatched by BB for four and Shazzler for twos (no wonder Shiv Thakor gave him that bat/plank of wood), and the Rovers continued to prosper albeit slightly behind the run rate.

BB’s innings sadly came to an end as he started to press metal to the floor for a lovely 61 - having just been dropped in the deep he repeated the same shot went big again in the same direction and was well caught by the relieved fielder. Fowler having lost the rock, paper and scissors game with Aspell for the number 3 slot marched purposely to the

wicket fresh from his pre-season nets with young son Freddie in the back garden. There is always the question with all the old Rovers legends at the start of the season “have they still got it?” - as Ed glided the ball sweetly and effortlessly past mid-off for 4 second ball it was clear the “Growler” was still good to go. Shazzler was delivered a new bat by the skipper Kennedy and slowly but surely his eyesight improved, the pea became a marble which then became a red sphere with a seam on it and lo and behold some glorious pin point straight drives missing the lurking boundary fielders came from our dogged opener.

The Pilgrims introduced the darty spin of the centurion Cosford who then triggered the start of a collapse of Roveresque proportions. Fowler went tamely but only after he had hit one of the shots of the day a sumptuous drive on the up over cover into the pavilion for 6. Bennie Aspell joined the fray and not picking the quicker one from the wily Cosford first up was soon hobbling back to the pavilion - LBW big toe/bunion before wicket for a golden duck. The bat could have been thrown but luckily with so many potential investor clients within ear shot

Bennie let out a small expletive and that was all that could be heard by the panicking middle-order as they chaotically tried to pad up as wickets tumbled out in the middle. Things only got worse as Pedro Peters arrived back in the changing room but this time with many expletives filling the air. Pedro had been run out going for a second run that he suggested to Shazzler (who was at the same end at the time) was possibly a mistake. Peters calmed down a little when he was told that in the scorebook it wasn’t a duck and he would be given the first run!

One wise old owl was heard to say that the Shaz had better stay in and win the game to atone for his bad calling..... sadly, the changing room door burst open and Shazzler immediately arrived back in the hutch – so 140 for 1 had now rapidly become 170 for 5. There was widespread panic for those padding up and with “Weasy kid” Otto and the captain Kennedy fresh at the crease. DJK, trying to forget his 3 ball duck the day

before and having not scored a run since last August, was suitably nervous and scratchy.

Sensibly, DJK gave the strike to the “Weasy kid” who looked in good nick with a couple of lovely shots. The required run rate stayed at around 7 an over and with the odd four ball being despatched and singles being taken the ship had been steadied. Otto was starting to get the Rovers back in the game and the Repton boys were on the back foot. The opening bowler was called back into the attack to stem the runs but fortunately his radar went awol and with pace on the ball runs became easier - Kennedy, at last, finding his own radar and a bit of timing. The “Weasy kid” and the “Old one” saw the Rovers over the line with an over to spare - an exciting conclusion to a very good game, the wicket was superb the hosts were very generous and the Rovers by hook or by crook did the job. A relatively early finish was good news for those travelling far and the season had started with a good win.

THE TOUR 2015 Uppingham Rovers v Charterhouse Friars Sunday, 5th July 2015

I recently read a great article which quotes ‘The Sunday morning skipper has to remember a few simple principles: cobble together 11 players, make sure they’re well matched to their opposition and try to ensure they have not consumed class-A drugs on the morning of the game’.

Pulling together 11 cricketers for an international game is simple, even pulling together 11 players for a Saturday league fixture is relatively easy, but Jazz cricket is something entirely separate again, and requires 11 good lads…..or, 11 people who can’t get picked for league games be it due to age or ability. Either way, it’s good to know the Rovers have plenty of options.

Thankfully it was clear the skipper Stuart Peters had read the same article and down the A3 screamed the Rovers eleven. Not all would have necessarily passed the breathalyzer test… or got into a Saturday League team but all had whites, some banter and a sprinkling of talent.

Coin went up, Stu called wrong and Charterhouse Captain, run-machine, Harry Hooper, decided that the Friars would bat first confident that Uppingham has struggled to produce bowlers over recent years.

Brothers Ben and Nick Crowder took the new red cherry against W Gordon-Martin and O Doyle. With an amused tone, O Doyle [5]

claimed it was his first innings in over 15 years and in the second over Nick Crowder ripped his off stump out the ground and reminding O Doyle why he hadn’t played for 15 years his contribution to the day over at 11.40am! Gordon-Martin hung around for a while, as he owns an expensive nightclub in Soho named Cuckoo (which usually has an exceedingly long queue and expensive drinks), it’s important to mention he’s a great bloke, looked in the greatest form but, unfortunately, got a good ball from Ben Crowder.

Charterhouse’s number 3 came and went, but the Friars number 4, A Brennan [100] played his shots and played them well as the Rovers stomachs began to turn toward lunch. Fortunately, the Rovers luck improved as the multi-talented Dave Astle [11 overs, 58 runs, 2 wkts] was brought into the attack for his annual game. Once again he bowled stump to stump, delivering yorker after yorker until he broke through Brennan’s defence. If you have the privilege to sit next to D Astle at a dinner, feel free to ask about ‘Operation England Flag’, a canny tale about a lion, a bitch and a wardrobe!

A top lunch was had and 11 blokes returned to the field several stones heavier. Gus Barton, gym/life coach to the rich and famous Fulham ladies, kept the wickets rolling, his Atlantic Row challenge seemingly a long way from the cultured green billiard table of Charterhouse. He was well supported by James Staniforth [5 Overs, 22 runs, 2 wkts], the man-mountain from the other end.

Charterhouse finished 228 for 9 off 48 overs which was a pretty good effort from our Sunday heroes especially as there wasn’t too many regular bowlers in the side.

C Bennett-Baggs [28] and Angus Barton [10] strode out to opening the innings with B Ryder Smith, opened the bowling for Charterhouse. The first ball went fizzing past

BB’s off-stump. As did the second, third and 4th. On the 5th ball the umpire declared a no ball and the Rovers run chase got off to a start.

Gus Barton fell first - BB soon followed caught in the slips by the ever reliable hands of Hooper. 57 for 2. Tom Kennedy and James Staniforth [50] both played well and built a steady partnership.

Like “Take That”, TK required a little patience, but got done by the little “dibbly dobbleys” of Chandler [8 overs, 32 runs, 2 wickets] and spooned a catch back to the bowler. Disaster then struck as Staniforth who had batted magnificently and kept the Rovers in the game crept out of his ground. Perhaps through tiredness or too big a lunch but either way he was done by Don stumped, 82 for 4.

“The engine room needed to fire”, “the tail needed to wag” – Captain Peters declared to his young troops explaining that the Rovers were past masters of the wagging tail. History would suggest that the captain had the perfect Rovers for the job, however, the score book would suggest a wagless tail and the

engine probably electric. With the exception of Ben Kennedy, who after a “gap yah” of “maccy d’s” around the world (our fitness guru Gus had declared as having a large “one pack”) the other Rovers were reading from a different phrasebook and today wasn’t to be their day. The tail fell away without contributing BK finishing with an attractive 28 (not many quick singles) and the match drew to a close. The Rovers finishing on 177 all out off 36 overs, 51 short of the Friars total and with lots of overs in hand ‎teachers report probably said “satis could do better!”

The Friars were very hospitable and had arranged a dinner in the staff common room, an event space which holds a lot of tradition and history to the school. At least when the hosts invited the Rovers to midnight golf the visitors won and a new record as TK fresh from a 3 year golf scholarship to Brookes the pick of the players...... the chapel roof cleared with a 9 Iron!

On behalf of the Uppingham Rovers, should any Friars read this – many thanks this was a great start to the tour.

Uppingham Rovers v Charterhouse Friars Monday, 6th July 2015

Similar to how Edmund Hillary, a keen cricketer himself, put the NZ flag on the summit of Mount Everest in 1953, the Rovers flag remained at the top of the Charterhouse pole after the preceding day’s fixture. Sadly it wasn’t flying on the back of a victory but the Rovers hoped that the second day would hold more promise. With the 22 dehydrated players having over-trained, the night before it was agreed drinks would have to be at very regular intervals.

The previous evening the Rovers proved what a talented group they were by entertaining Guildford’s Sunday nightlife with an impromptu ‘battle of the bands’ performance on stage in the White Horse Pub. Entertaining their fan’s with classics such ‘Malcom Robson’s Barmy Army’, ‘My My My Sam Debenham’ and my personal favorite ‘Linda in the Sky of Diamonds’. Tickets go on sale soon for the world tour, stay tuned!

Much to the disappointment of the opposition captain, Hooper, Stu Peters for once won the toss and selected to bat first on a sunny hot day, despite his side only amassing 177 the day before. A canny decision that his team mates were instantly grateful for.

Chris B-B and “Six-pack” Barton crossed the boundary line to open-up for the Rovers. The duo played the new ball well and set about creating a solid platform putting on 56 runs

before the first wicket fell. Bennett-Baggs [24] fell first, a little tired after trying to keep up with the big boys the night before, feathering a catch to the keeper off the bowling of Imrie. Gussy Barton and Otto ‘The Otter’ Esse put on a partnership of 100 together, running well between the wickets – our 30 a day “weasy kid” was given a good work out by our most celebrated personal fitness trainer and kept the scoreboard rotating at a useful rate. Some hard and very lusty blows from the gym monkey and cultured stroke play from Otto took the total to 155 before Otto snicked to the keeper, this time off the bowling of Harvey. 155-2.

“Captain America” - Angus Barton continued merrily showing a range of clean hitting and reached a superb 100 - his second 50 coming off just 36 balls. A fantastic innings on the back of 5 nights on the raz was great entertainment for his audience. Gus kindly got out to let the others have some fun 190-3. Archie Stroud [33] and Henry Swayne [45], two masters of French cricket took the Rovers total to 216-4, both went about their business like silent assassins, picking off singles and not hitting the ball too far off the square. Stroud looked set however the ball that brought his innings to an end, failed to bounce on its way to middle stump. 271-5

Charterhouse had nowhere to turn and so looked to their captain H Hooper to serve up pies for a declaration feast. Swayne over indulged and dished out a simple catch to mid-on. 280-6. Tom Kennedy, however, seemed to have an appetite and hit a fast 36 of 19 balls. Peters [7] came and went which gave Louis Frankel [1] a chance for red ink. Given Frankel’s performance in the Cricketer Cup, this was a vast and encouraging improvement!

Uppingham Rovers finished 293 for 7. An excellent display of batting on a good wicket.

Once the chicken pie had settled, Eliot Prior and Henry Lascelles stuck up their hands for candidacy to open the bowling. Reflecting the lack of bowlers on offer their wish was granted and Stu Peters was content to have such an easy decision put on his plate as well as thirds of the chicken pie.

Rozier-Pamplin and W Gordon Martin opened the batting for Charterhouse Friars and got their side off to a flyer going at 6 an over. Eli’s alternative mix of deliveries wasn’t working and Lascelles was quickly running out of breath. Charterhouse were 68-0 from 12 overs with little worry.

It was clear that despite the total posted by the Rovers, the Friars were up for a fight and that the ‘Rovers Ripper’ [skipper] would have to protect his boundaries to keep the chasing Friars at bay. It was either this, or to give his own figures protection as he bought himself on to bowl. Spin from both ends, Stuart Peters slow turning grenades and Otto’s javelin darts went about their business.

The Rovers first strike came in the 14th over when Otto dismissed Rozier [40], caught by a languid Lascelles. The celebration was fantastic and perhaps reflected the Rovers surprise that Henry had held on. Was Rozier unlucky or had the betting man from Newmarket been holding back his ability so to lengthen his odds? Esse followed up with 2 more wickets dismissing T. Gordon-Martin [34] and Williams [3] in successive overs. Otto finished with figures 12 Overs, 1 Maiden, 75 Runs and 4 Wickets. Charterhouse 93-4.

In came the Friars captain Hooper a fine swordsman and slayer of average Rovers bowling over many years. Many thought Captain Peters would lead his cerise and blue army from the front and carry on bowling to restrict the shot making Hooper, but he immediately took himself off with respectable figures.‎ Charterhouse moved

to 210-5 with relative ease, taking Frankel

and Swayne’s bowling apart. Swayne often

looking to the skies for divine intervention

but instead seeing a little red ball being

launched into the distance 33 runs swatted

off his 3 overs.

Stu kept juggling the bowlers but Hooper

remained the key wicket. “Six-pack” Barton

joined the attack and although expensive

got the break through required when Chris

Bennett-Baggs, without the gloves on, took

a superb diving catch on the boundary rope

at 3rd man (it might have been easier for a

taller man).

Charterhouse having been cruising to victory

were in a bit of a “do do” as their tail began

to panic at 256-8 – 38 needed with less than

10 overs remaining. As the fixture entered

into the final 5 overs of the day, The Rovers

Ripper – Stu Peters lined his cordon with as

many catchers as he could find, searching

for the final 2 wickets. The “weasy-one”

Otto was given the penultimate over and

managed to dismiss B Ryder-Smith with his

second delivery.

Charterhouse were 9 down it was VERY close

and the Friars weren’t settling for the draw

as Hill strode to the crease and promptly

dispatched Otto’s next 4 balls for four.

Charterhouse 276 – 9.

Barton bowled the last over, and although

restricting the Friars to no more runs, was

unable to clench the final wicket required.

Match Drawn.

A fantastic second day of cricket ‎proving yet

again declaration cricket when done well is

great fun.

Uppingham Rovers v Lancing Rovers Lancing College, Tuesday, 7th July 2015

The annual pilgrimage to the South coast started as usual with the 9.30 appointment at Lancing’s finest breakfast at The Rainbow Cafe. Frankel on debut was given the traditional “Belly Buster”, black pudding, beans, fried egg, sauté potato and bacon at a very reasonable £5.95 - sponsored by early tour sponsor Glenstone plc. A big Rovers hand to Sam Debenham who was on day-release from fourth baby childcare in Suffolk.Lancing and back in a day showing the real art of modern parenting.

Pedro Peters CEO of the Rovers tour sadly lost the toss (again) and on an overcast grey day and with the overnight rain making the pitch a little green the Lancing captain inexplicably decided to bat. The home skipper’s decision based on the confidence in his batters who had knocked off 250 against the “blind school” the day before and was under the delusional view that lightening could strike twice. Senior Rover Kennedy having seeing Lancing over the last 25 years was sent to try and negotiate a change of plan but sadly despite years of tricky negotiations on behalf of the Rovers the Lancing skipper was like Maggie Thatcher and “not for turning”.

Crosby hot off an 80 the day before tried to hit Prior’s second ball into the pavilion with mixed results, he hit the ball but only as far as Pedro at short mid-on and Lancing were 0 for 1. The score sadly soon became 117 all out before lunch an extraordinarily abject performance even by Lancing’s very

low standards. The first 5 batsmen scored 0,8,8,6,20 and before the start these were the stars from the day before! Eli Prior despite suffering from infected “shreckfoot” bowled with pace and whip and a return of 4 for 32 off 9 overs blew the top order away and when the score reached 62 for 6 amateur tipster Lascelles suggested the evening race meeting at Brighton might be a good option with an early finish a certainty. The high point of the innings came when Roberts batting at 9 hit Debenham for 2 consecutive 6’s in a jaunty innings of 29 .....still lunch (which was tremendous ) was taken early and the Rovers were greeted by a Lancing team who had already started drinking their sorrows away in embarrassed silence.

Bennie K and Frankers opened the batting against a chap called Naughty and both played some nice shots before in classical school boy fashion got themselves out. “Wheely” Barrow hot off the Cambodian leg of his “gapYah” and still, possibly, under the influence of some South Asian “wacky backy” didn’t last long. Pedro and Fowler, making a welcome return to where he has got most of his Rovers runs, knocked off the remaining 60 in double quick time and the game was won in 22 overs by 3.20 pm in what then had turned out to be a glorious afternoon.

The senior Rover with his pads on suggested a beer match but the Lancing boys were, unfortunately, not up for the fight. The Lancing captain offered a meek apology and so the Rovers transferred to Eastbourne with the feeling that Lancing Cricket was struggling to become competitive.

Tricky to celebrate such a non-contest but in true Rovers style a good attempt was made by all; Pedro Peters leading from the front with a bit of Cow and Malbec in the company of the Eastbournians and the Malvernians at Bibendum accompanied by a team bonding cricket trivia quiz .

Uppingham Rovers v Old Eastbournians Eastbourne College , Wednesday, 8th July 2015

A slightly weary Rovers team arrived at

a very wet College field, victims of the

Eastbournians plot to take down the entire

team in a late night entente cordiale while

their own young bucks were having a good

night’s sleep back at base. Miller, Burrough

and Stewart (jnr) were the members of the

gunpowder/ Jaegermeister plot who looked

equally weary albeit slightly chuffed with themselves.

Pedro Peters proceeded to lose the toss yet again (since his recent marriage it’s become a habit) and the Rovers were put in to bat. The rain continued and an early lunch was taken and with a new improved menu proving popular the Rovers were able to take stock and recover.

After lunch the format of the game was changed from declaration to a 35 over hit and right on cue the sun came out. A new format equals a new toss which Peters lost again! Put in on a wet one Lascelles after his strange antics the previous evening was promoted up the batting order in true Rovers tradition from number 11 to 1. He walked out to bat muttering something about

“going big or going home” and after two cavalier mows for two he snicked-off for a well-made 4 distraught that a first Rovers ton had once again evaded him. Ex-Headmaster Lewin, seemed to be supporting a little more timber than usual from too many choral teas, did well to survive an opening barrage from the young tall and wild-eyed Smith. A mixture of retreat and evasion by the Rovers legend steadied his ship as his younger batting partner Tommie K played some attractive shots at the other end. The score tickled along nicely with a flat bat slap cut for 6 from the ex-head the high point but eventually he retreated a bit too far in his crease and for the first time in his illustrious career trod on his own stumps. After a fair amount of discussion and a bit of confusion he had to trundle off.

Fowler and Kennedy D both got in and then got out and it was left to junior Kennedy, Bennie, to hold up one end as he watched his older brother TK continuing to flourish. TK eventually perished to a long hop from the spinner, top-edging to cover yet again for an attractive 49. Bennie K did a lot of swishing, still a little bit rusty after a “GapYah” lurking on the beaches of South East Asia, was joined at the crease by the fidgeting Frankel who came and also went quickly. It was left to the Skipper Peters who after a tricky over struggling to spot the ball quickly found his range and gave the bowling and “little Ang” in particularly a bit of a bashing. The scoreboard ticked over from 160 to 220 in double quick time.

TK and Stuey were both out wafting but some serious damage had been done and a good total was set and despite a quick outfield the challenge of 6 an over plus from the off would take some good batting.

The Eastbourne skipper Cane-Hardy has been a very tricky customer over the years to get out but no one in the past had tried a slow

floaty full toss on leg stump until Lascelles

came up with the idea and Cane-Hardy was

caught at short mid-on for a big fat duck. I

don’t think even Lascelles, king of the spread

betting market, would have given odds on

that but took it all in his very long stride as

he took the plaudits from his teammates.

Symes having just joined the tour in the

morning, and remarkably not hungover,

bowled a gem of a spell moving the ball

both ways and was too good for Burrough,

Morgan and Wheeler who fell in quick

succession. Lascelles overheated and had to

be withdrawn with figures of 2 for 18 off 7

overs, a sterling effort particularly having

succumbed to a dodgy prawn and early bath

the night before. The Rovers mystery non-

spinner Jim Thompson came into the attack

and treated all to his varied repertoire of this

and that and the infamous Thompson quicker

ball. “Jimbo” accounted for the dangerous

Stewart and the Rovers despite a couple of

hiccups - namely Mckintosh smashing a quick

fire 50 and Hopkins supporting him well in

a stand of 70 - the home side were rolled

out well short of their target. Frankel and

Robbie Barrow got a bit of treatment but the

wily old Lewin snared another victim to stop

any faint hopes of an unlikely victory. Lewy

could have had more but a dislocated digit

off his own bowling curtailed his spell and

the old knacker scuttled off squealing to find

Doc Thwaites at the local Taverna to pop his

finger back in.

Frankel finished with 3 wickets and the team

withdrew to the Hydro for a slightly quieter

evening to be and joined by Mrs. Hargreaves

and Kennedy both on Wednesday debut and

both on their 25th consecutive tour, well

done ladies !

Uppingham Rovers v Old Eastbournians for the Ashworth Thwaites Trophy Eastbourne College , Thursday, 9th July 2015

A Thursday morning is always one of nerves in the Hydro hotel, everything just seems a bit warmer as the pressure begins to mount ahead of the Ashworth Thwaites showdown, the rooms, the bacon, everything except the coffee really. Questions were bouncing around the breakfast table, could the Rovers make it 3 in 3 years and put some clear light between the two sides? Would Prior’s foot last the warm up? Would the Jim Thompson quicker ball prove unplayable? Had anyone seen Rob Barrow?

Ben Aspell was down from Leicester for his now traditional ‘put me down for Thursday and Friday’ and the team contained a lot more youth than in years gone by - Aspell being the oldest man on show, bar legend Lewin. A good job too, for what greeted the Rovers on College Field looked to be an extension of the Spanish summer language school taking place in the adjacent buildings. Long, and in some cases really long, youthful blonde hair fresh of the beaches of Ko Pen Yang, Sydney, and Eastbourne confirming the hosts youth policy was up and running. There was even a warm up for the OE’s and they rolled into town with a certain swagger, as if to say ‘get used to this decade of hell from our new Galacticos’.

The toss was won by the OE’s and upon electing to bat you would have thought the game was done and dusted from that moment such was the reaction of the U19 side. Peters had, of course, already decided the Rovers would bowl in any case, nothing tactical, just a case of getting the boring bit out of the way first and then putting the feet up!

The new ball was taken by Prior and Symes who would be having a crack at Hobden, blonde younger brother of Sussex’s first class bowler Jack. As is often the case, he was head to toe in his brothers latest cast offs from his multi dollar sponsorship by Willowstix. It was clear the boy could play, but could he really play? Could he handle the cauldron of college field with the likes of Stroud, Howeson, Kennedy, Stewart, Ashworth and Hargreaves on watch? Only time would tell.

Symes was bowling well, swinging it away from the batsmen, finding the edge twice, only to see his chances shelled - in fairness to the culprit, Will Barrow, he did have two broken thumbs although he did not know it at the time. Hobden got going with some lusty blows over the wall, the Rovers needed an early strike otherwise this was going to be a big chase and red leather carnage. Thankfully, Elliot Prior dismissed the prized wicket of Stewart for 5. This brought Skinner to the crease and the batsmen began to build a solid partnership.

The Rovers were now toiling and in the moment of need the skipper threw the ball to Lewin. It didn’t take long for the old legend, on a diet of 2 matches a year, to get in on the act as he got a ball to stop on Hobden, only for it to be spooned to Symes. Game on. Two more wickets then fell in quick succession as Aspell’s mean line and length frustrated the young bucks to boredom - those years of seam bowling in the Leicestershire leagues causing all sorts

of problems. Skinner was still there though and had built his way to 50. He was joined by Macintosh who was from the Chris Gayle school of cricket, glasses on under helmet and very relaxed. His hair was half way down his back and his season with Nimbin CC in Australia had clearly been enjoyed (for those unfamiliar with this little beauty spot an hour from Byron Bay, it is worth looking up if you like to reflect on life).

Lunch was taken and the change of caterer this year had been welcomed by the majority of the players. Skinner was still undefeated and had his eye on a ton. Jim Thompson had been itching to have a go at him all morning and was subsequently thrown the ball. It didn’t take long, a mix of quicker balls and the odd Bunsen burner saw Skinner give it away and chip up to Aspell at cover. A huge wicket and one which had reduced the Rovers potential run chase by some distance. After that it was one way traffic as Jim, Aspell, and Robbie Barrow mopped up the tail and the OE’s predicted 322 became 222 all out.

The Rovers were confident of the chase but it was going to take two men to knuckle down and chip away at the target. The message from the skipper was clear - don’t die wondering and go out and get the job done. For that reason the in-form TK was joined by the not so subtle Symes who would operate with more of a shoot on sight policy rather than build an innings. Kennedy had been in great form, who wouldn’t be after playing 4 times a week all summer? He drove one through cover on just the second ball of the innings and it was clear he had his eye on a big one. As is often the case in cricket, you have to put away the bad ball, which Kennedy did two minutes later only for the Nimbin overseas to pluck out what can only be described as ‘a worldie’. Nobody in the ground expected it, let alone the man himself.

The next over Symes dispatched two balls to the boundary and was out going for the third...... a classic Rovers moment. The Rovers were staring down the barrel at 12 for 2, some 211 runs short of their target. Enter two young bucks on their gap

year, Ben Kennedy and Louis Frankel, who both had a key role to play. Ben doesn’t say much and despite all the chirp sledging from the opposition he set about his work and dropped anchor the Rovers answer to Rahul “the wall” Dravid. No matter what was said BK would not react to the opposition and their enthusiasm and banter soon died down as Benny crept towards his 50 before tea. Frankel too had found a mature side to his game as he waited for the bad ball, of which there were soon plenty and hit some lovely shots. The biggest danger with these two would be a run out; one doesn’t speak and the other is orbiting somewhere near Saturn! After tea the Rovers youth policy continued to chip away and Frankel was unfortunately dismissed for a welcome return to form for 44. He had steadied the ship wonderfully but there was still work to be done.

BK was joined by Ben Aspell- both men tall and of few words - two very different styles - perhaps the Rovers very own Ronnie and Reggie Kray! Aspell was dropped in his first few deliveries and perhaps the young OE’s

were not old enough to realise the pain that a mistake like this could inflict (if the wise old OE Mynottyee had been watching in his tight whites he would have advised that the OE’s had probably just dropped the Ashworth Thwaites cup yet again). Aspell proceeded to send anything in his half to the rope and, on a few occasions out of the park, as he smashed his way to a fantastic and unbeaten 66 not out. BK’s innings was a worthy effort, a possible Rovers ton, but he had been denied by Aspell’s lusty blows ending up with a very well-made 78 not out, a fine Rovers win and the AT cup was back where it belongs.

A great game played in the right spirit. The OE youth policy hadn’t quite pulled it out the bag this time round but there will be tougher times ahead for the Rovers no doubt.

Since this match took place we were very said to hear that Ian Thwaites, who donated the Trophy with David Ashworth, and a true Legend of the Old Eastbournians had died after a long illness.

Uppingham Rovers Cricket Club

Uppingham Rovers v Old Malvernians Firle, Friday, 10th July 2015

The last day of tour is always a challenge with 22 fairly tired bodies turning up for one last game. Everyone was excited to be trying out a new ground in the delightful village of Firle – 20 minutes to the east of Eastbourne. Rumour has it that the Duke also owned Glyndebourne but lost it in a game of cards -oh how times have changed!

Our skipper for the day, Aspell lost the toss and Malvern elected to bat in gorgeous sunshine. Prior, gangrene seeming to have taken over his feet, took some neurofen and came hobbling in from the top end. Malvern seemed to be intent in dealing in just dots or fours - Jones 7 fours and then clean bowled by Prior, Stephenson 3 fours and also clean bowled by Prior. Meanwhile, at the other end Aspell a legendary Friday bowler with his nagging wicket to wicket bowling was at his measly best his figures of 8 overs 3 for 10 runs could easily have been more if old man Kennedy had clung on to a swirling half chance at mid-on that witnesses suggest was more like a straight forward sitter for a younger man!

The Malvernians were in desperate trouble at 85 for 5 until skipper Hylands showed some valuable resistance. The small ground and lightning fast outfield meant that anything bowled wide or short could and would be punished - as Symes and Thompson found out. Symes eventually got Hylands bowled for a very good 68 and with good support from the inevitable wagging tale, Jones and Harwood, a competitive total was posted

- 227 for 8 off 40 overs. A great recovery after such a poor start and much depended on the bowling of the Harwood brothers whose reputation preceded them as big nasty fast bowlers! A superb lunch and tea from Burrough’s delightful sister provided great sustenance to the tired Rovers squad - the scones and strawberry jam a memorable high point.

The Rovers reply was interesting as “Wheely” Barrow had been complaining of a sore finger and Prior complaining he didn’t like quick bowling. Both were volunteered to open the batting much to the amusement of those watching in the pavilion with Robbie Barrow at number 3. At 20 for 3 the plan seemed to have back-fired with Harwood junior accounting for both Barrows and both plumb in front - Prior bizarrely stumped having wandered out of his crease. Pedro Peters decided to treat fire with fire and dispatched Jones for 24 in one over as Peters showed some wonderful clean hitting. The fidgeting Frankel with more batting mannerisms than Steve Smith also started to play some classy shots.

Senior Harwood was given the chance to stem the flow of runs but the harder he tried the better Peters and Frankel batted. Sadly, there was a mix up and a run out resulted, which is always a possibility with “Frankers” at the crease, senior pro Peters gallantly fell on his sword for a superb 60 with 10 fours and 2 sixes with including one lusty blow last seen on its way towards the village pub. Young “Frankers” was joined by senior statesman Kennedy and continued to show his class with some glorious drives. Even the old man batted with calmness and authority, sensibly giving the young thruster the strike whenever possible. Kennedy eventually missed a straight one and it was left to Tommie K and “Frankers” to bring the Rovers home to a very satisfactory win in the 29th

over. Louis Frankel finished with a very stylish 87 not out showing that when the stars are all aligned he really does have some talent.

The players retreated back to the Hydro for the black tie end of tour dinner, normally ladies night but due to a lack of ladies on this occasion was called Lady Night! Another successful tour and great work behind the scenes from the same Stu Peters and BB and very generous wine subsidies from the same old kind Rovers who support this club so well.

For the record Will “Wheely” Barrow returned to Northamptonshire where it was confirmed both thumbs had been fractured. Elliot Prior’s “Shrekfoot” was a bad case of blisters forming under plantar warts!
