1.5 WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Students and Parents,
Welcome to all students and parents for the academic year 2012-2013 year, we wish to work together to meet the expectations for student success and fulfillment.
This handbook will assist you in understanding the policies and regulations that will guide the daily life of students in the elementary school. The policies stated herein support the vision and mission of MIS in the practical, everyday routine of the students.
In a practical sense, the objective of these policies is to help establish a positive school climate.
A good school climate must encourage students to be focused on academic achievement as well as feel safe and accepted by peers and teachers in a respectful, responsible social setting. It must challenge and motivate students academically and socially by promoting respect and responsibility.
At MIS our goal is to create a learning environment that cares for each student’s welfare while setting high expectations for behavior and learning. Following a common policy will help us obtain our goals of academic excellence and strong moral values.
As your partner in achieving the best for your child, I am yours respectfully,
Principal

1.6 CURRICULUM
Meridian International School offers pupils the best of
the American, British and International educational
traditions, as well as the benefits of access to the rich
culture and heritage of Poland by being approved by the
Polish Ministry of Education (MEN).
MIS promotes a healthy and well-balanced perspective
on life in its mix of curricular and co-curricular activities,
with a wide variety of programs that meet the needs
and interests of its pupils.
Our curriculum holds the belief that children learn best
through natural, meaningful, integrated experiences
that are relevant to their lives. The classroom is child-
centered and active. Teachers respect pupils' prior
knowledge and build upon their competence. The
teachers recognize the importance of trial and error, risk
taking without fear of failure, and the need for time to
grow.
Basic skills are taught as children interact with the new
subject matter presented. The teacher facilitates
Meridian International Elementary School

learning by modeling and engaging pupils in a wide
range of activities. Pupils are expected to take an
active role in their learning and are encouraged to
experiment and think for themselves. Pupils are
encouraged to use a wide range of materials and
resources, working individually and in small groups.
Individual growth is the goal and teachers accept pupil
differences. Pupils are actively involved in self-
evaluation, while evaluation by teachers is ongoing and
comprehensive throughout the learning
process.
1.7 PHILOSOPHY
MIS is a private school which follows an education
programme approved by the Polish Ministry of
Education. Our goal is to ensure our pupils with optimal
conditions for learning and getting to know the world
around them in a spirit of tolerance and respect for all
races, religions, cultures, and approaches to life. We
value truth, freedom, justice, human rights, morality,
and collective effort for common good. We make
certain that in our school every pupil, regardless of the
Meridian International Elementary School
Student-Parent Handbook - 18 -
country they come from, would feel safe, respected,
understood, and fully accepted.
During our lessons and classes we make it a priority to
create an environment in which pupils can develop their
own abilities and interests which allow them to build a
feeling of their self-worth and faith in their own abilities.
We want learning and school work to teach children an
optimism and joy in discovering new abilities and finding
the answers to their various questions which they will
have to know also in their adult life.
Our highly qualified pedagogical staff cares about
children’s comprehensive intellectual, cultural, moral,
and physical development which should grow along with
ambition, discipline, and independence in thinking and
human deeds. It is our desire that upon finishing
elementary school our children would not only have
theoretical knowledge, but also that they would be able
to use that knowledge in practice and perfect it in the
ever-changing conditions of life. We want them to be
wise, thinking, responsible members of society who
inspire others to action. We promote the family unit
and all its members as the source of life and support as
well as the fundament of a functioning society. We also
encourage our parents to continue this model at home.

4. ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance at school is compulsory and is
crucial for maintaining a satisfactory academic level.
Irregular attendance and unnecessary absences affect
the child's ability to learn and make it more difficult for
students and instructors alike due to the missed
instructional time, discussions, and activities.
If an elementary student exceeds the maximum allowed
20 days of absence per academic year, and the absences
are not excused, the child may be transferred to a public
school.
Students who are not enrolled at MIS are not permitted
on campus at any time unless they have been registered
as official guests.
4.1 EXCUSED ABSENCE
An excused absence can be granted in case of illness or
family emergency. A medical certificate or letter from
the parent should be submitted upon the student's
return. In case of a pre-requested absence for any other
Meridian International Elementary School
Student-Parent Handbook - 29 -
reason, a written letter should be submitted to the
secretary office at least three days in advance and will
be considered for approval. The letter should state the
length of the absence and the specific reason.
All work missed during a student's absence must be
completed upon the student's return to school. A
teacher will assist the student with missed work if the
absence has been approved by administration.
4.2 UNEXCUSED ABSENCE
Family travel and vacations should not conflict with the
school's instructional calendar and will be considered
unexcused absences. Requested absences that are not
approved will be recorded as unexcused absences.
Students are required to make up any missed school
work including class work, quizzes, tests, projects, and
homework. The teacher will not be required to assist the
child with this work.
Meridian International Elementary School
Student-Parent Handbook - 30 -
4.3 MISSED WORK
When a student is absent from school for a short period
of time, books and homework will not be sent home.
Upon the student's return to school, any missed school
work, including class work, quizzes, tests, projects, and
homework, must be completed. The teacher will assist
the student with an excused absence with missed
class work and lessons. The student will be given extra
time to finish the corresponding missed homework.
4.4 TARDINESS
The school day starts at 8:30 a.m. and students are
required to attend the lessons on time each day.
Students are considered late if they arrive at school after
8:50 a.m. Students who are late must report to the vice-
principal's office to receive a tardy slip before entering
class.
Constant tardiness is not acceptable.
On the first time tardy, the student will receive a
verbal warning.
Meridian International Elementary School
Student-Parent Handbook - 31 -
On the second time tardy, a phone call will be
made to the parents.

Students who arrive after 9:20 will not be
allowed to enter classes and will be supervised
by one teacher till the common room starts..
Excused lateness will only be granted in case of
an emergency.
4.5 ABSENTEEISM

It is important that if a child is sick and not well enough
to attend school that they stay home until they have
fully recovered. This is particularly important if the child
has an illness that is infectious. In the event of an
Meridian International Elementary School
Student-Parent Handbook - 32 -
unforeseen absence, parents are requested to inform
the school by telephone or e-mail to Class Teacher
and/or vice-principal, between 8 a.m.-10 a.m. on the
day of the absence, giving details as to the nature of the
absence and the anticipated length of the absence.
Upon return to school, parents are requested to
inform the school in writing of the reasons for
their child’s temporary absence and of any
ailment which might affect the pupil’s
participation in Physical Education activities.
Parents are requested to inform the school
administration regarding any relevant
information or an excuse for the absence in
writing or in person.

6. ACADEMIC
Each student is expected to put forth their best effort
and demonstrate a positive attitude toward all academic
matters. A student's academic grade is based on the full
extent of the work done throughout the marking period.
Class work, homework, participation, tests and quizzes,
and projects are all calculated to arrive at a cumulative
grade at the end of the semester. Exam grades are
calculated with the semester grades to determine the
final year's grade. The percentage given to each
category will be determined by the individual
departments or subjects.
Grades are recorded on a weekly basis in the grade
books of the on-line grading system, SIS, and are
available for access at any time for the grades 4-6. Each
parent and student of grades 4-6 will receive an ID
number and a password in order to access their account.
It is the responsibility of the parent and student to
remain current on the student's work progress and
grades.
Meridian International Elementary School

or absent.
Homework refers to any assignment relating to school
work that pupils do at home. Homework is not
necessarily written work. It is any task that a child is
asked to complete at home. It may consist of reading,
learning by heart and reinforcement of class work,
research and project work or further practice of skills
learnt in class. Written homework should always have a
specified length and due date.
Meridian International Elementary School

Grades 4 – 6 30 to 70 minutes
A teacher may refuse to accept a completed
homework assignment that is of poor quality.
In addition to regular homework, students
should spend 15 to 20 minutes of reading each
evening.
We ask parents of students who are not yet
independent readers to read to their children
for 10 to 15 minutes each evening.
Pupils are kindly required to give in their written
work according to the set due date.

that a significant step towards helping pupils achieve
their maximum potential involves having an integrated
curriculum with a cross-disciplinary approach to
education. Therefore, the curriculum at the school pulls
different disciplines together at every opportunity. The
curriculum features a modern approach to science
