In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful Most Compassionate

Welcome to Crescent Islamic Montessori School

We would like to welcome you and your family to the Crescent Islamic Montessori School. CIMS is an Islamic non-profit school applying the Montessori method of education as its main curriculum. This coming year holds promise for new activities, new challenges, and new friendships.

CIMS Mission StatementOur mission is to provide children ages 3-12 with a quality Montessori education in an Islamic atmosphere. The basic tenet of Montessori education is that a child learns best in an enriched, supportive environment through exploration, discovery, and creativity with the guidance and encouragement of a trained and caring staff.

"The most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man's intelligence itself, his greatest implement is being formed. But not only his intelligence: the full totality of his psychic powers. At no other age has the child greater need of an intelligent help, and any obstacle that impedes his creative work will lessen the chance he has of achieving perfection." - The Absorbent Mind Maria Montessori

GoalsOur main goal is to set a solid foundation in Islamic studies so children can practice Islam in their daily lives. The main purpose of a Montessori school is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help the child develop an excellent foundation for creative learning. The specific goals for the children who attend a Montessori school are presented below.

To stimulate a child's innate love of learning To provide a nurturing, cooperative learning environment To incorporate all the senses in the learning experience To consider the development of the whole child To develop a positive attitude toward school To help each child develop self confidence To assist each child in building a habit of concentration To develop habits of initiative and persistence To foster inner security and sense of order in the child To encourage respect for self, others, the environment, and all life

Brief Description of the Montessori ApproachDr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician, founded Montessori education in 1907. She based her educational methods on scientific observation of children's learning processes. Guided by her discovery that children teach themselves, Dr. Montessori designed a "prepared environment" in which children could freely choose from a number of developmentally appropriate activities.

Montessori represents an entirely different approach to education. She believes that the best learning is self-learning. She sees in each child a tremendous urge to learn and to develop independence. The classroom is designed to invite the child to learn. The materials are "self-correcting", so that the child may concentrate without being constantly corrected by someone outside his work.

The social life of the children is a vital aspect of the Montessori classroom and curriculum. Children of different ages (3-6 years) are grouped together. This provides abundant opportunities for learning and helps to create a sense of family while everyone contributes and takes responsibility for the functioning and maintenance of the environment. The older children provide leadership, guidance, and act as models for the younger children. By helping younger children, the older children reinforce their previous skills and knowledge and benefiting from the satisfaction of helping others.

The Montessori environment is a “living room” for children. Children choose their activities from open shelves with self-correcting materials and work in distinct work areas on tables or on rugs on the floor. The environment is arranged according to subject areas, and children are always free to move around the room instead of staying at desks. There is no limit to how long a child can work with a piece of material. At any one time in a day all subjects will be being studied, at all levels.

Children learn mainly through interacting with materials, other children, and the teacher. The teacher acts as a guide, a facilitator, and a mediator between the child and the environment.

Our programOur program includes the following components:

The study of Arabic language, Qur’an, and Islamic studies on a daily basis.

The Practical Life exercises enhance the development of task organization and cognitive order through care of self, care of the environment, exercises of grace and courtesy, and refinement of physical movement and coordination.

The Sensorial materials enable the child to order, classify, and describe sensory impressions in relation to length, width, temperature, mass, color, shape, touch, sound, etc.

The Montessori Math materials, through concrete manipulative materials, allow the child to internalize the concepts of number, symbol, sequence, operations, and memorization of basic facts.

The Language work includes oral language development, written expression, reading, and study of grammar, and children’s literature. Basic skills in writing and reading are developed through the use of sandpaper letters, loose alphabet letters, and various presentations allowing children to effortlessly link sounds and symbols and to express their thoughts in writing.

The child is also presented with Geography, History, Life Sciences, Nasheed, Art, and Movement education.

We have two Montessori labs. One for children ages 3-6, and other for children ages 6-9. These two rooms have all the Montessori materials suitable for the children’s age groups. The children in these two rooms are like scientists. They learn through discovery, exploration, and interacting with materials that are mostly self-correcting and are guided by Montessori-trained staff. We also have 3 small playrooms for preschool/kindergarten children.

Curriculum includes geography, biology, language, mathematics, science, music and art along with Arabic language, and Islamic studies.

In research style of learning, children work in small mixed-age groups on variety of projects.

Exploration of each area is encouraged through projects and field trips to community resources.

The program sparks students’ imagination and engages their intellect, developing reasoning abilities and life skills.

Lessons are given by trained Montessori teachers

Daily ScheduleThe schedule is carefully planned to maintain a balance between child-initiated/teacher-initiated activities, and close-ended/open-ended materials. Notice that snack time is offered at 10:30. Please make sure that your children eat a full breakfast before coming to the school so they can concentrate on the activities offered.

CIMS Policies and Procedures

BirthdaysAt Crescent Islamic Montessori School we do not celebrate birthdays. Please do not send treats to school on your child’s birthday. We also request that you DO NOT send balloons, flowers, etc., to school during the school day. The delivery of these items is disruptive and interrupts the teaching and learning time. Birthday invitations are not to be given out at school. Thank you for your cooperation.

DisciplineGround rules protect the rights and liberty of each individual child and the group as a whole. They promote the internalization of pro-social behaviors and values including self-control of impulses, consideration of others, and a sense of responsibility for oneself and the welfare of the group. Ground rules can help make life at school easier, make the days run more smoothly, and enable children to be more independent and help to develop responsibility. The number of ground rules is generally kept to a minimum, stated and presented in a positive manner with an emphasis on safety, respect for others, environment and the results benefits all members of the group.

Here is a list of some typical, often automatic, ground rules used in most Montessori classrooms: The child selects a material to use from the shelf and takes it to a suitable table, floor and/or

other designated workspace. The child is free to use the material as long as they like as long as it is treated with respect. After using the material, the child returns it to its place on the shelf, in the same condition in

which it was found, for the next person to use. The children restore the environment, clean up spills and messes, put rugs away in proper

order, push chairs in, etc., after each activity The child is free to work alone - no child is forced to share with the materials they have first

chosen for activity. The child has the right not to choose any materials or activity.

Donations, Fundraisers, and Financial AidAs a non-profit and privately funded institution, CIMS receives financial support for its operational expenses through tuition fees, donations, and fundraising activities. We will have several fundraisers at Crescent Islamic Montessori School, and donations are always welcome at any time throughout the school year. We always need parent volunteers for our fundraisers. If you have fundraising ideas, please let us know.

Financial aid applications are available in the office and will be reviewed by the Board. Because Crescent Islamic Montessori School relies on tuition, donations, and fundraisers to continue running there are very limited financial aids available.

Arrival, Early Release, and Daily Student DismissalThe school requires that the person bringing a child should remain with the child until he/she is accepted by staff.

Parents may take their child out before the end of the school day under urgent circumstances. The child has the right not to be interrupted during school hours.

Parents who wish to take the child out before the end of the day must call the office or Administrative Assistant before coming to school in person or send a pre-authorized person to pick up the child. To pick up a child, the office must have written permission from the parent. If you change the person(s) who will be picking up your child, you must fill out additional authorizations. NO CHILD WILL BE RELEASED WITHOUT PARENT AUTHORIZATION.

Earthquake or Emergency EventAt the onset of an earthquake, all people at Crescent Islamic Montessori School will take immediate shelter and duck and cover. Students and teachers will practice this throughout the year. Once the shaking has stopped, all teachers will evacuate their classes to the designated area. Teachers will then account for all students in their classes.

Evacuation procedure:1. Using the emergency contact list, the director or her assistant will contact the parents or the

parents’ emergency contact to inform them with the emergency situation.

2. Designated parents’ volunteers will be contacted immediately to come to transport children to the alternative site. Six volunteers will be needed to transport all the children. If there will be no enough volunteers then the transportation will be done in two trips.

3. The alternative site will be Bilal Mosque at 16000 SW Blanton Street (half mile away from CIMS location).

4. All the teachers will go to the alternative site, check the attendance sheet and call the director on cell phone to assure her that they have all the children.

5. Teachers stay with the children reciting Quran, singing songs, and/or doing finger-plays until the children are picked up by their parents or parents’ emergency contacts.

6. The director will be the last one to leave CIMS to go to the alternative site after ensuring that all the children and the staff evacuated the building.

Enrollment Policy Enrollment shall be open to any child, provided the school can meet the needs of that child. Enrollment in the school shall be granted without discrimination in regard to sex, race, color,

national and ethnic origin.

A child must be at least 36 months and must be fully toilet-trained. He/she must be able to use the bathroom independently, clean him/herself and be able to change his/her own clothes. Too many toilet accidents will indicate that the child is not fully toilet-trained and not ready to be admitted to the program.

In case the child had many toilet accidents, once a week for maximum of two weeks, the school policy requires he/she stays at home until the child is completely toilet-trained. No tuition fees will be required for this stay-at-home period and the child’s spot at school will remain secured. There will be no refund for any previously paid fees.

Field TripsField trips provide an extension of the learning experience beyond the classroom walls. Your child’s teacher will send you information for upcoming field trips a few days in advance. Parents must complete a permission slip for each field trip and return it no later than the day before the scheduled field trip. If you need additional information about the field trip, please contact a teacher. Children without signed permission slips will not be able to go.

Parent volunteers are welcome on field trips and will be assigned a group of students to supervise. Please contact your child’s teacher if you wish to volunteer on a field trip.

Parents may be required to pay an additional fee for special events or field trips.

Lunches and SnacksAll children are required to bring their own lunches and snacks. Please make sure that your children eat a full breakfast before coming to the school so they can concentrate on the activities offered.

Parents are advised to provide each child with a lunch box and adequate food for the break and lunch. Students are allowed to use the microwave and the refrigerator. The child’s name should be clearly placed on the lunchbox and food containers or zip-lock bags. Parents should prepare a nutritious lunch and beverage each day. All students are discouraged from having junk food and sweets, since they have little nutritious value. No gum or soda pop will be allowed at school, except for educational purposes. For half day program you should pack one snack. For full day you should pack 2 snacks and lunch. Lunch should include one item form each four group (protein, grain, vegetables, and fruits). The school will provide milk.

Food Storage and HandlingThe school only provides milk and snacks (e.g. gold fish, pretzels, crackers, etc.). Only Grade A pasteurized and fortified milk is served to children. Milk and snacks are selected, stored, and served in a sanitary manner.

A spirit stem (alcohol filled) thermometer in working condition is affixed to the door of the refrigerator.

Milk is purchased on a school day and comes directly from store to the refrigerator. Milk is dispensed from a commercially filled plastic container of not more than one-gallon

capacity.

Milk containers are opened immediately before pouring. Any unused portions left in the original container are returned immediately to refrigeration.

Procedure for Using the Bathroom There is one bathroom for girls and another for boys. Teachers remind students to use the bathroom before snack time and after coming back from

recess. Before snack time they line up and use the bathroom for their gender one at a time. Students are not allowed to lock the door but they can close it. The teacher does not go into the bathroom, however she is only allowed to check if the child

has washed his/her hands appropriately or if the child asks for help. There is always at least one staff member on duty while the students are using the bathroom.

Hand-Washing Procedure Students wash their hands with soap and warm running water after using the toilet or wiping

the nose, before and after eating, and after returning from any outdoor activity (recess, planting, etc.).

Staff wash their hands with soap and warm running water before and after feeding a child or handling food and after assisting a child with toileting or wiping the nose.

Hand sanitizers are kept under child-proof lock and are used by staff members only. When hand washing is not possible, e.g. on field trips and on the playground, moist towelettes

are used.

Bedding-Care Procedure Each child has his/her own mattress. Children’s mattresses are kept apart from each other while sleeping and away from emergency

exits.  Day care teacher cleans mattress every day with Clorox/water mixture.  Each child brings his/her own mattress sheet, pillow, pillow cover, and blanket.  Day care teacher puts each child’s stuff in a bag after use.  On Friday, children take their stuff home, wash it, and bring it back on Monday.

Parent-Teacher MeetingThere will be scheduled Parent-Teacher meeting during the school year to evaluate your students’ progress. In addition to these meetings, parents can schedule a meeting with their child’s teacher to discuss any concerns or questions arise concerning their child or classroom matters. This is done only by filling out a meeting request form available in the office. Teachers are not available to confer with parents during teaching hours, or at drop-off or pick-up times.School HoursOur school is open Monday through Friday. Children in the Pre-K/Kindergarten half-day program start at 9:00 am and dismiss at 12:30 pm. Children in the Lower Elementary start at 9:00 am and dismiss at 3:30 pm, except on Fridays they are dismissed at 12:30 pm.

Children are not to be dropped off before school hours and must be picked up promptly at the end of the day. We open the school door at 9:00 am. Teachers are not responsible for children before and after school hours. Our teachers come early and stay after school to prepare for lessons and activities. There is a 5-minute grace time for early drop off or late pick up. A fee of $1.00 for every minute will be charged after the grace time, with maximum of $15 per day.

We also offer extended care for our students from 7:30 am to 9 am and 12:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Rate is $5 per hour only for those who use the facility for the whole month. Drop-in rate in these hours for children not enrolled at the school is $8 per hour.

School CalendarThe CIMS school year is a ten-month period, September to June. We will have an up-to-date calendar of events on our webpage, as well as, a monthly calendar that will be printed on the back of the CIMS Monthly Newsletters.

Student Health InformationChildren who do not feel well or who have an accident at school are seen by one of the teachers. Often, a child who does not feel well will feel better in a few minutes after a drink of water, a Band-Aid, or some rest. We do not diagnose, and if there is any sign of injury or illness, the parents will be called. In extreme emergencies, the ambulance or child’s doctor will be called. The sick child will be isolated from other children resting on a mat in the office.

If you are called, you may decide to take your child home.

After your child’s illness, be sure he/she is well enough to participate in the school program. Children should not return to school until they are fever free for at least 24 hours without medication and/or until the last incidence of vomiting occurred 24 hours previously. Children will not be kept in at recess, as there is no supervision for them during that time.

If the parents or guardian of an ill/injured child cannot be reached, then the person designated on the emergency card will be contacted. It is extremely important that a current emergency card is on file at the school. We must have emergency contact phone numbers at all times.

If Parent, Guardian, or Emergency contact cannot be reached, then the director or teachers will make the decision regarding the welfare of the child.

ImmunizationsOregon State law requires students to have the following immunizations (these are to be completed prior to starting school):

DTaP – 4 doses (series of 3 doses, 1 booster)

Polio – 3 doses Varicella (Chickenpox) – 1 dose

MMR (Measles/ Mumps/ Rubella) – 1 doseHepatitis B – 3 doses

Hepatitis A – 2 dosesHib – 3 or 4 doses

Any child not in compliance will be excluded from school. If you anticipate having difficulty in complying with the immunization law, or have difficulty providing the appropriate dates, you may wish to contact your physician or the Public Health Department at 503-648-8881 for assistance.

Medication for StudentsNo prescription medication or non-prescription medication (including pain relievers, sunscreen, and cough-syrup) may be given to a child except under the following conditions:

A signed, dated, and written authorization by the parent(s) is on file.

Prescription medication is in the original container and labeled with the child’s name, name of the drug, physician’s name, date, dosage, and directions for administering.

Non-prescription medications in the original container, labeled with child’s name, dosage, and directions for administering.

Head-Lice TreatmentTeachers do a routine classroom check for head lice. It is important for parents to have regular head checks for their child. A child diagnosed with active head lice does not need to be sent home early from school, but will be discouraged from close direct head contact with others. The school will notify the child’s Parent/Guardian and state that prompt, proper treatment is in the best interest of the child and his/her classmates. Student confidentiality will be maintained at all times. The child can return to school after appropriate treatment has begun. When it comes to treating head lice, treatment should begin as soon as symptoms of lice are noticed or when live lice and nits (lice eggs) are seen on your child’s body or clothing. You want a treatment that kills not only lice but also the nits. But with a number of different lice treatments to choose from, it hard to know what’s the best for your child.

The medicine Nix® is recognized as the most effective over-the-counter treatment for killing lice and nits according to the Academy of Pediatrics. Nix® is recommended by pharmacists, trusted by moms, and hated by lice. Here are some other things to know about Nix®:

Nix® has been the #1 pharmacist-recommended brand for more than 15 years. The Academy of Pediatrics recommends the medicine in Nix® as the first line of treatment for

lice.

Updated: 09/15/16 Email: [email protected] P a g e 12 | 18

Page 13: cimschool.com Handbook 2016.docx  · Web viewDr. Maria Montessori, the first woman in Italy to become a physician, founded Montessori education in 1907. She based her educational

Nix® has a maximum-strength formula. Nix® kills lice and the nits. Nix® protects against lice reinfestation for up to 14 days. Nix® is safe for use on children as young as 2 months old.

You may also heard that Nix® has a residual effect. This means that some residual or lingering activity of Nix® remains on the hair for up to two weeks, even with regular shampooing. This residual activity allows Nix® to kill lice – including baby lice as they hatch – and protect against lice reinfestation up to 14 days. Products with longer residual effects tend to be more effective in killing newly hatched lice eggs. Other lice treatments that do not have the residual effect that Nix® does often require more than one application to ensure that newly lice eggs are killed. Nix®, on the other hand, kills lice and their eggs with a single application.

It is always good to remember that personal hygiene or cleanliness in the home or school has nothing to do with getting head lice School SuppliesOur annual school supply fee is $250 for preschool, Kindergarten, and lower elementary students including Arabic and Islamic books.

School VacationCIMS will be closed on several specific occasions (see school calendar). “Family days” are National holidays which most parents have off work or school. We encourage families to take advantage of extra family time to spend together. CIMS is also closed on Islamic holidays (check the calendar).

The school may also be closed due to inclement weather or other unexpected circumstances. CIMS will follow the Beaverton School District policies. For school closures, you can visit http://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/home.

School VisitationsTo help us with the safety and well-being of all students, we must know who is in the building at all times. To help us do this, it is our policy that you arrange a time with your child’s teacher prior to your visit. We do invite and encourage you to visit school and/or your child’s room to share in his/her experience. In the interests of learning for all students, and as not to interrupt class time, we try to keep visitations brief.

Tuition and FeesTuition is established as a yearly fee based on the number of days the class is in session. Tuition may be paid annually, semi-annually, or in ten equal installments between September and June. We accept checks or cash only and are currently unable to accept credit cards.

Monthly installment payments are due by the 7th of every month unless prior arrangements have been made with the school administrator. Tuition paid after the 7th of the month will be assessed a per day

Because of limited space, and at times having to turn children away, we ask that when you register your child you commit and are responsible for the monthly tuition the full school year of 10 months.

Transportation Transportation is the responsibility of the parent. However, carpooling arranged among parents is one way to meet transportation needs.

Volunteer ProgramThe volunteer program at Crescent Islamic Montessori School enriches the education for all students in the school. Volunteers may do a variety of activities depending on their skills, talents, and interests. Volunteers may work regularly scheduled hours each week, once a month, or one or two times a year at special events, depending on their available time or interest.

CIMS requires that parents volunteer 20 hours over the course of the school year. Once you have turned in our Volunteer Questionnaire and completed our CBR (background check – a legal requirement for adults who will be working with/around the children), it should be easy for our Volunteer Coordinator to find tasks which suit your needs and interests. Contributing just 2 hours of your time each month will boost the morale of your child and our school community.
