iii MGEI Volcanology Workshop 2012
FOREWORD
Yogyakarta, 14 September 2012
Dear workshop participants,
Welcome to the 3-Day MGEI Volcanology Workshop at Yogyakarta city, Indonesia. It is a
great pleasure to welcome you all. Yogyakarta city is the capital of the YogyakartaSpecial Province which has a special status among other provinces in the Republic ofIndonesia, in which the region is lead by a king Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X.
Yogyakarta is also a higher educational centre of the country, including geosciencecourses which are offered by four universities. Two Unesco World Cultural Heritage sites(i.e. Candi Borobudur and Prambanan) are located within 40 km around the city, at the
base of the world-famous Merapi volcano.
This program is held by MGEI (Masyarakat Geologi Ekonomi Indonesia or IndonesianSociety of Economic Geologists) in conjunction with IAGI (Ikatan Ahli Geologi Indonesiaor Indonesian Association of Geologists) as a pre-IAGI 41th Annual Meeting. The MGEIwas founded in 2008 as an affiliate organization of the IAGI with missions to (1)improving and developing the professionalism of Indonesia economic geologists, and (2)actively playing the role in improving the quality of economic geology education. Thesehave been and will be done through technical seminar, discussion, workshop, and tourlecturing for Indonesian economic geologists and students. Since 2009, MGEI holdsannual workshop with specific theme, i.e. Gold Workshop in 2009 (Semarang) dan 2010
(Lombok), and Good Mining Practise Workshop in 2011 (Makassar). This time we select amore basic knowledge theme entitled Volcanology: Basic Volcanology, Eruption
Processes and Products, Volcanic Facies, and Related Mineralization. This theme isselected based on the realisation that Volcanology is critically important for Indonesiawhich holds many active volcanoes in the world and that understanding volcanicprocesses and products will help exploration of mineral and geothermal resources.
The attendees will receive presentations on volcanic systems from high caliber experts/researchers, and participating in dynamic discussions in classroom as well as in the field
on various aspects of volcanic processes and products that should be applicable in manyexploration projects for magmatic-arc related mineralization. This workshop will be ofinterest to all geologists, particularly those involved in gold exploration, but also graduate
students, igneous petrologists, volcanologists and geothermal geoscientists.
Finally, we hope you enjoy the workshop and get rewarded.

Research expertise and track recordMy research includes fundamental projects on how volcanoes work and thephysical characteristics of their products. I also conduct more applied researchprojects on the volcanic host successions to gold, copper, base metal anduranium ore deposits. I have 20 years of experience working in submarine
volcanic successions, both modern and ancient, and am very familiar with thecomplexity of arc and back arc volcanism.
My capacity to contribute in this area is demonstrated by having published 70international peer-reviewed papers (15 in the past 5 years). I am also seniorauthor of Volcanic textures (1993, currently being revised for a new edition)that has sold more than 4,000 copies worldwide. My research has been funded by competitive grant schemes offered by the
Australian Research Council and by industry.
Other professional activitiesI have been an Editor for the Bulletin of Volcanology, the premier journal involcanology, since 1994, and for the Geological Society of America Bulletin since2008. I regularly review manuscripts for these journals, as well as for Geology,
Economic Geology, Precambrian Research, and the Journal of Volcanology andGeothermal Research. I serve as a referee for grant proposals submitted to theARC, National Science Foundation (USA), Natural Environment Research Council(UK) and Foundation for Research Science and Technology (New Zealand). From1997-2007, I was a member of the Executive Committee of the International
Association for Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earths Interior, including fouryears as Vice-President. I have presented 13 in-house professional short courseson volcanology for mining and exploration companies in the past 5 years. To date,I have supervised 17 PhD and 35 Honours students to completion.
