YOUR 5 MOMENTS FOR HAND WASHING HYGIENE

THE FACTS

1. Nationally 20 - 25% of Admissions develop a Hospital Acquired

Infection (HAI).

2. An estimated 2 million people are infected annually.

3. Approximately 75,000 die each year from a HAI.

4. National hand hygiene compliance rates are less than 50%.

5. Increasing hand hygiene compliance by 37.5% decreased HAIs by

40% and MRSA transmission by 54%. (Lancet. 2000 Oct 14;356(9238):1307-12.)

6. Increasing hand hygiene compliance by 128% decreased MRSA

bacteremia by 60% (65 fewer patients overall) and all MRSA

isolates by 47%. (Med J Aust. 2008 Jun 2;188(11):633-40.)

WASH IN, WASH OUT

EVERY PATIENT, EVERY TIME

KEY POINTS

Purpose of the initiative:

To decrease hospital acquired infections which cause:

• pain and suffering to the patient.

• a breakdown in their trust of us.

• an increased emotional, physical and financial burden to the patient.

To protect each other from the germs we are carrying.

Why is this needed?

95% of people DO NOT wash their hands properly.

Raritan Bay Medical Center is below our goal for hand hygiene.

What about the people I see who don’t wash their hands?

Speak up in a non-confrontational manner.

“Don’t forget to Wash In Wash Out” spoken as a reminder, not as a command.

What should I do if someone reminds me?

Say “Thank you,” and then wash your hands.

Even if I just washed my hands but they didn’t see?

Thank You for noticing and I’ll do it again for you if you would like! When you say, thank you and then

wash your hands, you have supported and validated the person who reminded you. They

will be much more likely to speak up again. In this way, your very simple response is helping

to change the culture one encounter at a time.

Thank you so much for your commitment to protect our patients and each other!
