1 Introduction

1.1 About the SAP HANA Studio

The SAP HANA studio is a collection of applications for the SAP HANA appliance software. It enables technical users to manage the SAP HANA database, to create and manage user authorizations, and to create new or modify existing models of data in the SAP HANA database. It is a client tool, which can be used to access local or remote SAP HANA databases. The SAP HANA studio runs on the Eclipse platform 3.6.For more information about SAP HANA, see the SAP HANA Master Guide.

1.2 Supported Platforms

You can use the SAP HANA studio on the following platforms:

● Microsoft Windows x32 and x64 versions of:

○ Windows XP○ Windows Vista○ Windows 7

● SUSE Linux Enterprise Server SLES 11: x86 64-bit version

2 Planning

2.1 System Requirements

Java JRE 1.6 or 1.7 must be installed to run the SAP HANA studio. The Java runtime must be accessible for the user that runs the studio via the PATH variable.Make sure that you choose the correct Java variant for your installation of SAP HANA studio:

● For a 32-bit installation, choose a 32-bit Java variant.● For a 64-bit installation, choose a 64-bit Java variant.

NoteThere is no 32bit version of the repository client. If you install the 32bit version of the SAP HANA studio and want to make use of the repository integration features, for example, in the Project Explorer view in the SAP HANA Development perspective, you must install the 64bit version of the repository client.

2.2 Installation Paths

SyntaxIf you do not specify an installation path during installation, the following default values apply:

Platform PackageVersion

Installation Path

Microsoft Windows x86, 32-bit

32-bit C:\Program Files\sap\hdbstudio

Microsoft Windows x86, 64-bit

2.3 Prerequisites for Updating the SAP HANA Studio with SUM for SAP HANA

Before you update the SAP HANA studio using the Software Update Manager (SUM) for SAP HANA, perform the prerequisites listed below.Make sure that you meet these requirements to use this method:

1. Make sure that the SAP HANA studio to be updated was installed with version SPS03 of the SAP HANA application software, which must have been installed using the SAP HANA unified installer.

2. Make sure that SUM for SAP HANA is running.

3. Configure the update site by choosing Help Install New Software and entering the URL http://<host>:<port>/studio_repository/.This refers to the https port of the SUM for SAP HANA process, which is by default 8080.

3 Installation or Update

● InstallationYou can install the SAP HANA studio with one of the following methods:

○ You use the GUI-based Installation Manager, which is based on the program hdbsetup. This is the recommended installation method.

○ You use the hdbinst program at the command line.● Update

You can update the SAP HANA Studio with one of the following methods:

○ You download the latest version of SAP HANA studio from SAP Service Marketplace, and use the GUI-based Installation Manager, which is based on the program hdbsetup. This is the recommended update method.

○ You download the latest version of SAP HANA studio from SAP Service Marketplace, and use the hdbinst program at the command line. This is suitable for quick updates of individual SAP HANA studios where there is no infrastructure.

○ You use the SAP HANA system as the central source of updates. This means that, whenever the SAP HANA system is updated, the Software Update Manager (SUM) for SAP HANA offers updates to all SAP HANA studio installations in the system landscape. This is suitable for automated updates of multiple SAP HANA studios. For more information, see Prerequisites for Updating the SAP HANA Studio with SUM for SAP HANA [page 6]

○ You set up the repository manually using the hdbinst program on any server, then manually configure it to be available to the SAP HANA studio installations. This is suitable for large landscapes with multiple SAP HANA studios where the update needs to be centrally available. There is no dependency on SUM for SAP HANA.

3.1 Installation or Update on Linux3.1.1 Using the Installation Manager on Linux● GTK2 is installed so that you can run the graphical installation tool (this is contained in SLES11).● You are logged on as the root user.● This user is authorized to open a display.● The Java runtime is accessible either via the PATH or JAVA_HOME variable or by specifying the --vm option.● You need a local X11 graphical environment and an X server on the machine where you perform the

installation.

1. Download and extract the software to an empty directory.2. Open a root shell and go to the directory where you unpacked the software.

3. Call the Installation Manager as follows:./hdbsetup

If you have several installation kits - that is, several installation variants - on your system, navigate to the download directory, and enter the following command instead to start the Installation Manager:

./hdbsetup -a studio4. Choose the activity to be performed.5. Follow the instructions displayed by the Installation Manager.6. Leave the root shell after the installation or update has completed.

3.1.2 Using the Command Line on Linux● You are logged on as the root user.● The Java runtime is accessible either via the PATH or JAVA_HOME variable or by specifying the --vm option.

1. Download and extract the software to an empty directory.2. Open a root shell and go to the directory where you unpacked the software.

3. Call the installation program as follows:hdbinst [<option_list>]

4. Follow the instructions displayed by the installation tool.5. Leave the root shell after the installation or update has completed.

3.1.3 Installing or Updating the Repository on LinuxYou are logged on as a root user.

1. Open a root shell and go to the directory where you unpacked the software for this installation.

2. Call the installation program as follows:./hdbinst -a studio --copy_repository=<target_repository_path>

3. Leave the root shell after the copy is completed.

The repository is copied to the specified path.

After you have entered this path as the source for the update in the studio, you can use the Update Server function provided by Eclipse to regularly update your installation. For more information, see the SAP HANA Administration Guide.

3.2 Installation or Update on Microsoft Windows

If the SAP HANA Studio is installed into the default directory on a Windows 7 operating system, write access to the files is prevented if you are not running the studio as the Windows administrator. We therefore recommend
