HAMSTERLEY FOREST VISITOR’S GUIDE Welcome to Hamsterley This is the largest forest in County Durham. There are 5000 acres here for you to explore with our trails. The walking trails will take you right into the heart of beautiful woodland where you may catch sight of deer, adders, and maybe even leaping salmon. If you want to explore further into the forest, use the Forest Drive. (See signposts around tge forest.) Recently voted one of England’s top scenic woodland drives, it is a spec- tacular 4 mile (6km) route that winds it’s way up the valley following the energetic streams that tumble off the North Pennines. There are plenty of opportunities to stop along the way to walk in the forest or have a picnic. Access to the Forest Drive can be gained with a valid car park ticket. What’s at Hamsterley? • 6 walking trails, including an all ability circular route • Visitor Centre & shop • Forest tea rooms • Adventure play area • Orienteering • Regular events • Ranger-led activities for groups (bookings only) • Cycle Hire & cycle trails • Horse riding trails Location Signposted from the A68 at Wilton- le-Wear. There is no direct public transport service to the forest. Parking There is a charge for using the forest drive and car parks, payable on entry via pay and display machines or toll staff. Annual parking permits are available from the visitor centre or Wood n Wheels cycle hire. The for- est drive and car parks are locked at night – see signs for prices and open- ing times or contact us below.
