How long do you think a customer would wait in our office to beserved??? Three hours?? Six hours?? Longer!! Nope Wrong!! Ourcustomers would expect to be served almost immediately and if there was any delay, they would expect to have a prompt apology

and explanation as to what was causing the delay and when theymight be served. In other words we would bend over backwards tocommunicate with them and work hard to ensure that we weredoing everything possible to resolve their issue.

So how is it that an elderly person can spend 11 hours in ouremergency department and be almost totally ignored for the entiretime. When she needed to use the facilities, I had to t rack someonedown to provide some service. Had I not been there, how longwould she have waited for someone to simply ask how was shedoing and was there anything that she needed.

It is a sad commentary on our society that I can get faster andmore caring health care for my dog than I can for a family member.Is the problem not enough resources?? A more recent visit withanother family member t ook 2 ½ hours during which she receivedless than 10 minutes of actual attention. Knowing several otherpeople who were also there, I can confirm that their experience wasexactly the same.Doing a bit of analysis, I did a count of the approximate number of

patients actually inside the ER and estimated that there were nomore than 30 patients actually inside the ER at that time. I also dida count of staff that I could actually see at one t ime and counted 18staff present. Assuming that not all staff visible were nurses anddoctors, let's say that 10 staff were actually hands on with patienttreatment and allowing for a mere 50% of their time actuallyworking with patients, one would expect that each patient wouldreceive about 10 minutes of attention each hour. Nope!! Not evenclose!!

It wouldn't take a genius to make a few visits to the ER and ask patients just how they feel about the service that they are receiving.

Check and see how many people are leaving without service afterwaiting hours in frustration.This past weekend, I gave myself a nasty litt le cut with a grinder.

Certainly not life threatening, but as a gaping wound was definitelyin need to stitches in order to get it closed properly. My decisionwas that a life time of slowly seeping blood from an unhealedwound was far superior to the frustration of dealing with ourmedical system.

So I have been talking to a good friend of mine, The Jet, and foran agreed upon number of doggy treats he is willing to see if he canget me in to see his doctor. He assured me though that if I whinedand didn't behave myself while I was getting stitched up that Iwould just have to find my own veterinarian the next time. 800

The week of August 9 , 12 year old Braden Gendron of Hampt on was one of only two at hlet es from New Brunswick to

threpresent t he Province at t he 5 Canadian NationalTransplant Games in Quebec City. These Games are a uniqueopportu nity for t ransplant recipients from all over Canada t ogather in a friendly and warm atm osphere.

The goal of the Games is to increase public awareness onorgan and tissue donation by showing that not only doestr ansplantat ion save lives, but th at t he recipients can ret urnto full and active lives. Aside from promoting organ donorawareness, the Games give the transplant recipients andth eir families the opport unity to meet organ donor familiesand to share moment s with t hem and express their gratitude.

Preparing for th e competit ion encourages the part icipantsto improve their fitness and lead a more active life. Bradenreceived a double lung transplant at Sick Kids in Toronto inSeptember of 2009 and was one of almost 100 transplantrecipients competing at th e Games. He was thrilled to att endth e Games for th e first t ime and represent th e Province alongwith fellow New Brunswicker, Mark Black, a dou ble lun g andheart tr ansplant recipient from Moncton .

The Games provided Braden with th e opport unity to m eetwith many other transplant recipients from across the

Countr y. Braden made t he most of the opport unity bycompet ing in badminton, t able tennis, and several track andfield event s bringing hom e one gold and t wo bronze medals.His next goal is to r epresent Canada at th e World Games inSouth Africa in 2013.

Great friends came together to listen to great music and supporta great cause at the second annual "Concert by the Creek" on

stAugust 21 . Once again this year, a beaut iful starlit nightprovided the backdrop to an incredibly talented lineup of musicians who performed a spectrum of music encompassingclassical, pop, reggae, blues and folk.

The music was incredible from start to finish and, on behalf of the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership, I would like t o t hank thefollowing performers: Downside Up (Emily DesRoches, Jessica

John loveevents like this and we were reminded of himby his bodhran drum that had a position oprominence on stage and contributed to aalmost mystical quality of the evening.

The audience expressed its heartfeappreciation and support through donationtotaling almost $2,000! In addition, we hathree new Starfish sponsors sign up to paschool fees for three h igh school students foanother year. These funds will help thPartnership to cont inue support inworthwhile project s in Piggs Peak as we looforward t o 2011.

WE LIVE IN THE COUNTRY, THERE IS NO RUSH!Have you gotten a call saying you won a new cell phone? A trip? Lowercredit card rates because of a recent purchase? These are scams that aregoing around lately. I myself received two of them within two days. Thefirst one told me that because of a recent purchase with my credit card Iwas now able to get lower credit rating. If I didn’t want to go any furtherI was to hit # 9 on the dial and I would be disconnected. The onlyproblem is that this now gave the caller free long distance on myaccount. The second one was that I won a trip and they needed toconfirm some information and needed my social insurance number.This information would now give the thief valuable personalinformation that could be used to open accounts. One that has come tothe attention of the RCMP is one where the caller has been stating thathe is representing Bell Mobility and that the person had won a new cellphone/blackberry and package and again needed personal information.

This caller had some personal information but not all. My advice is to just hang up the phone.

A lady from Kingston was almost the victim of an internet scam.Luckily she had insurance on her credit card and they were able toreverse the charges. She purchased a Satellite and receiver from acompany from Quebec that went by the name TOTALFTA. Thiscompany is a scam and used many variances of the name. They havebeen charged with several offences in Quebec. They sell you someequipment and never send it.

We had a laptop computer stolen from a residence on Woodberry Courtin Hampton. The owners were away for the weekend and their daughterhad a few friends over who brought some friends unknown to thedaughter. The laptop was noted to be missing once the owners returned.

We had a residence broken into in Kiersteadville while the residentsslept upstairs. The thief or thieves entered an unlocked front door and

stole a computer, video games and console. A car in the yard wasentered and a cell phone and an IPOD Touch were also stolen. I mustagain remind the Public to lock their doors.

Again we had some poor innocent mailboxes knocked over bysomeone with nothing better to do with their time. These occurred onMain Street, in Hampton and were the Canada Post boxes.

With School approaching it is time to remind ourselves about the speedlimit on Main Street. The area near the Middle School is a 40 Km/hrzone while school is in. The fine doubles if you are caught not abidingby the law.

It is also a good time to take a First Aid Course. There are several withinthe area put on by the St. John Ambulance or the Red Cross

10 tips to make your return to school stress free - with fall just aroundthe corner, thousands of post-secondary students across Canada arepacking up their belongings to move across the province or even thecountry to pursue their studies.

“Whether you’re moving a hundred kilometres away from home or athousand, it’s important to keep yourself and your possessions safe,”says Amy Woods, official spokesperson for Allstate Insurance Companyof Canada. “Although we’ve had a small number of claims, we’venoticed that theft seems to be an issue for university students. Havingthe necessary protection in place and taking a few simple steps before

you leave for school allows you to enjoy your university experience withfewer worries.”

Allstate Canada has put together 10 tips to help you stay safe thisschool year:

1. Whether you’re living on or off campus, look into the rules andregulations of your home away from home before you leave. Makesure you do not bring anything that is not permitted.

2. Dormitories may seem like a fun, safe environment, but it isimportant to make sure to lock your door whenever you leave yourroom in order to protect your belongings.

3. If you are bringing any items of high value to school, such asmusical instruments or jewelry, consider having them insured againsttheft or damage before you arrive at school.

4. Never abandon your laptop in a library. It only takes a few moments

for someone to walk by and swipe it. If you must leave it temporarily,invest in a laptop lock to act as a deterrent.

5. If you’re renting a room or an apartment in a building, you may berequired to have tenants insurance, which protects you and yourbelongings if your property is stolen or damaged. Speak to yourfamily’s insurance provider or ask someone you know for arecommendation for an insurance provider in your new city.

6. When you take a car out of province, remember to check with yourauto insurance company to see if you are covered while away andcontact the province’s transportation department to see if you need tochange your license plates.

7. Don’t leave anything valuable in your car, especially in plain sight.Put any high value items in the trunk or glove compartment wherethey can’t be seen.

8. Keep an eye on your laundry if you’re doing it at a Laundromat toavoid having your belongings stolen. Bring homework or a book withyou to help pass the time.

9. How safe is your dormitory building? Look into the guest policy foryour dormitory and see what kind of security procedures they have inplace. If you feel unsafe, speak to an RA or an administrator aboutcreating a secure environment.

10. These days, many student cards act as more than identification. If you have ameal plan orlibrary accountassociated withyours, report itimmediately if it goes missing.

THE COUNTRY DOCTORWhen our family, with three little kids, came to New Brunswick,we decided to buy a house in Hammond River, which was actuallycalled Nauwigewauk. After living in Toronto, life could not possiblybe more different. We were used to big city life and now we had toget used living in t he country.

It was interesting to note how fast our children adapted and itseemed that they loved it. We found out that for services we had togo to Hampton and for a doctor Hampton was good because ithad three doctors - Dr. Leatherbarrow, Dr. Snow and Dr. Robb. Wecalled Dr. Robb but the woman answering said "County Jail".

Obviously it was t he wrong number, but she also said "You mustwant to talk about Dr. Robb". She was moonlighting, we thought .

Dr. Robb became our doctor and a very good family friend. Onest

Sunday on January 1 , which was on a Sunday he came to thehouse when we were still in pyjamas. He had a block of wood withhim and a box of shortbread and said "It's an old Scott ish tradition,at New Year's day you should visit your best friends and bringthese items to wish them a warm hearth and a full stomach.” Hestayed for breakfast and then said: "I have to go, I am worriedabout a patient of mine, I want to see him". Then he left in hisMorris Minor. We yelled at him, "don't you ever take a day off?", buthe waved with his arm outstretched out of the window.

One day in the fall he invited us to come over for a glass of wineon a Thursday afternoon and when we arrived, his wife Isabel said

that “he was not home yet but please come in and warm your self in from of the fire.” When he came in he was obviously exhausted.He dropped his tool case on t he floor and himself in a lazy chair infront of the fireplace. After a while the phone rang and he got upand talked to a pat ient, then he said: "I have to go. A patient needsa shot, sorry about that". “Doug, you are not in any condition todrive, we'll bring you there”, we said and he gratefully accepted.We drove him to the other side of the highway to a house with along driveway. “You stay in t he car, it won't be long” he said, and hewalked over to the house which was totally dark. Then we saw thelights go on at the main floor, then on the second floor and after awhile the lights went out at the top floor and when t he lights wentout on the main floor, we saw him leave the house. He waslaughing when he entered the car. He told us that when he

entered the house he had trouble finding the switches, but whenhe switched the light on he saw the son in the living room on thecouch sleeping, he was obviously drunk. Then he went upstairs tolook for the woman and when he saw her he asked her which bedshe was going to lay in, because after the shot she would be outcold. When she laid on the bed, he sat on the edge to prepare thesyringe, and then the bed collapsed. He gave her the needle,tucked her in and t urned off the lights and left the house.

He was a brilliant doctor and was an associated professor of Dalhousie Medical School who also trained students at hispractice and was so dedicated because to him patients alwayscame first, no matter what day or what time. When he needed aquadruple bypass, which was done in Ottawa, he died on theoperating table leaving Hampton without the best doctor it everhad.

The other two doctors were very dedicated as well. Dr.Leatherbarrow had his practice well into old age and Dr. Snow wasknown for having two TV's on top of each other. While his kidswanted to see a hockey game, the bott om screen was showing thehockey game without sound and the top screen had aneducational program with sound. He was also known to pull theoccasional tooth as Hampton did not have a dentist. He did nothave a license to use novocaine but everybody knew that in hisdrawer he had a bottle of the best which he used instead.

Times have changed but we still have our memories and we willnever forget a born doctor, who t reated the whole family, asdiseases often spread from one member to another and whenvisiting families he was able to observe where diseases originatedand how members are exposed.

SOPHIE is one of the six abandoned tabbies,"Munchkins" that we advertised a few issues back. She isnow 14 weeks old and cute as a button. Full of mischief and fun she plays very well with her two siblings (alsofemale) that are still with us at the Sanctuary.

EMMA is one of two kittens that came our way. She's abeautiful 12 week old tortie with exceptionally beautifuleyes and markings. She was a little shy when she firstcame to the Sanctuary, but she got over that quickly. She

plays well with the three "Munchkins" and they haveaccepted her completely.

Both of these two kittens are in a foster home and beingwell loved and looked after. However, they need apermanent home. If interested in either one or both,please call us to make an appointment to meet them.

We recently spent a few days vacationing in PEI with ourdaught er and gran ddaught er. When our girls were young we

went to t he Island ever y other summer, and t he opposite yearwent elsewhere. Since our girls have grown, this is the firsttime in man y years t hat we had gone. Carmen was an absolute

joy. Never a complaint or a whine, just soaking up the newexperiences with a big smile.Rainbow Valley was a family staple when visitin g PEI, bu t alas

it is no m ore. We did go t o Sandspit and t o t he n ew ShiningWat ers parks, however - this was most ly Carm en's vacat ion.For those of you not familiar, both are amusem ent parks withmany of th e same att ractions as at t he Ex, but in a beaut ifulgreen setting. The weather was perfect, sunny and not toohot. With few exceptions Carmen was tall enough for theadult rides at Sandspit and she was eager to try them. She

chose the Tilt-A-Whirl for her first "big kid" ride with hermother. The inventor of the ride designed it "to provideamusement apparatus wherein the riders will be moved ingeneral through an orbit and will unexpectedly swing, snapfrom side to side or rotate without in any way being able tofigure what m ovement may next take place in the car."

As the ride began , Carmen looked a litt le apprehensive; as itcontinued she began t o scream, t ruly afraid; by th e end of itshe was hesitant ly smiling. She went on t o enjoy several "kid"rides (mer r y-go-round and such) and t he Scram bler, whichshe loved. She t hen asked t o go on t he Tilt-A-Whirl aga in. Hermother hesitated, but Carmen was sure. This time sheenjoyed it. By th e th ird and fourt h t ime she loved it an d when

given the opportunity for one final ride before we left sheagain chose the Tilt-A-Whirl. From tota l ter ror t o tota l joy inone after noon.There is much t o learn from a 4 year old master ing the t error

of a new experience, converting it to pure joy. She wasdetermined not to be defeated and quickly learned thebalance bet ween fear and fun. New experiences can scare th epant s of any of us, but if we don't pu sh past t hat we can neverget to th e mom ents of pure joy on t he ot her side.
