Mr. Donald Tladi the head of department for patrollers said the project was initiated by business owners in Hammanskraal station who felt that the presence of nyaope people around the area is affecting their businesses. Due to this many people, especially shoppers are now scared of the area as many of them have been robbed by nyaope users. “Before today’s initiative we have held numerous meetings with all stakeholders which resulted in a decision to embark on a clean up operation of nyaope”, said Mr.Tladi. Centre manager for Kopanong, Elias Sadike, said all the stores were closed for an hour in order for this operation to be conducted in a joint manner as agreed in all meetings held. Mr Solomon Moekeletsi from Temba Taxi Association said the campaign was successful and they intend to deal with this nyaope issue promptly. “ We saw it befitting to be part of this initiative because our passengers sometimes are marked on their way to taxi ranks and as a result of them feeling unsafe ,our businesses have been affected”, said Mr. moeleletsi. He sent a strong warning to all nyaope users, saying that Hammanskraal is a no go area, and next time there will be no mercy for nyaope users. He said, “What they can do best for themselves is to stay away from such substances and away from Hammanskraal if they know they are using”. After the campaign there were no sign of nyaope users around Hammanskraal, and all participants said they wish it could remain like this forever. Khotso Magodielo who is the Centre manager at Renbro said they just want to make Hammanskraal a better area to shop at and this initiative will be carried forward probably on weekly or monthly basis. Some nyaope users were arrested and were detained at Temba police station. One arrested was Tshepo Koka who was found in possession of some stolen parts from the railway line. The Hammanskraal hawkers said the initiative was successful and they can now work peacefully without being robbed. STAR OLD AGE HOME Already sick people will NOT be allowed. Rain DropsLetter to the editor:

As I sit here today listening to the raindrops on my thatch roof, I look out of the window in to my beautiful green garden, it is hard to believe that only 2 or 3 weeks ago everything was dead and dull before the first summer rains fell, I realize how lucky we are to live in such a wonderful country. My thoughts go back to the days of apartheid, homelands and the struggle, what it must have been like for ANC activists who fought against apartheid and spent many years of their lives in exile or on Robben Island, was Robben Island as beautiful as our beloved country.I never had the privilege on meeting Nelson Mandela face to face, although it was always one of my dreams. If it was possible for me to have met the mighty man, I think of questions I would like to have asked him, the first question that comes to mind is, after been sentenced to life on Robben Island and treated so badly by the apartheid government, how was it possible for him to be so forgiving and fair towards his suppressors. The second question I would have asked Nelson Mandela, was his long walk to freedom worthwhile, if he looks at South Africa as it is today. Is this the South Africa he fought for or is he disappointed in the way his successors have run the country after he retired and later passed away?I believe that Nelson Mandela would feel proud of the fact that he virtually single handed transformed a country run by suppressors into a democratic country where everyone is

equal, no matter of colour or creed and that everyone has equally opportunity. However I have to wonder what Nelson Mandela would have to say about the crime and corruption in South Africa?Would Nelson Mandela be happy with the Marikana incident and the way police handle it, would he be happy with E-tolls, the role played by CUSATO and other trade unions, the EFF and Malema, service delivery, the slow eradication of poverty and job creation, the crime and corruption, nepotism and jobs for pals, the way that our parliament has degenerated into a circus.Nelson Mandela is not here to answer these questions but I know there are people out there who are passionate about him and all his works what do you say about all these questions? Nelson Mandela strived to make a better country for all, especially for poor people living under the breadline, his vision was good education, electricity , clean running water and good health services for all, creating jobs and restoring dignity for every South African and not only for family and friends of the fat cats.Stanley R

PARENTS AND ELDERS NEED TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL OVER FESTIVE PERIOD

DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE DETERMINED TO FEED HAMMANSKRAAL

The Christmas festive season just around the corner, every family and household looks forward to days of happiness and visits. These are times when some families would be going on outings with their loved ones and extra caution should be taken to property, children and pets alike.Hammanskraal News had taken to the streets to find views from the public in general on the festivities over the next month. Moutlwatsi alleged that both boys and girls lose their virginity during this time of the year with the abuse of alcohol and drugs. He further said that the young girls would go for older men in the quest for more money and promote the “yellow bone “and sugar daddy thing. He said that he is testimony to the said act as he had seen many a married men in such relationships. Miriam Maokwane, a member

of the Young Women’s club in Mmametlhake told Hammanskraal News that this is the time when the youth lose their morals. She added that respect also dwindles and bad talk comes to the tip of their tongues. She added that her club warns young women to lead clean lives to become women with dignity. She vehemently denied that poverty is the cause of involvement with older men. She reiterated that self-respect and honor is the recipe to a better future. The lass referred to some media sources that regularly show child trafficking and mutilations and said that this may be the time for children to disappear. She voiced that the latter is a matter of serious concern for the government and the communities. Miriam said that the club intends to build better women for the community and the country. She added that some young women begin the bad drinking habit during this time of the year. She relayed that the reason may either due to the absence of the parents or peer group pressure. “While the cat is away, the mice will play,” she quoted. Miriam added that the youth should learn to be responsible in their prime so as not to blame their elders and parents in future. She said that they do wrong knowing that the wrong will never change and that they would live to regret not having lived their youth to the full. She urged parents to give the youth room to prove their worth, motivate, encourage and direct them in the right path of life.

The saying that a hungry man is an angry man is about to be something of the past from the position taken by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture (Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality) at Mandela hall in Hammanskraal. The latter addressed its residents on how to deal and subsequently satisfy hunger, poverty and unemployment. It was outlined that other government departments are involved in the endeavor to fight hunger and joblessness. The residents attended this gathering in great numbers that was awesome to the departmental representatives. Miss Claurina Johanne broke the ice by saying that Gauteng Province found it befitting to meet Hammanskraal residents on Agricultural issues at hand and share information with the communities in question. The gathering was informed that the resources are available from their department to help the residents provide for their families from small to large scale farming. It was explained that this incorporated al the farming aspects viz. crop and livestock farming. The attendants

were also urged to disseminate information to those who could not attend the gathering for one reason or another.Mr. Maritz Mahlangu explained that “food security” referred to the availability of food for the household. He further said that every household must be able to put food on the table. He stated that that had also been extended to school with the introduction of food gardens in schools to augment to the feeding scheme. Mahlangu urged community members to group up in creating community project and follow the correct procedure to acquire land. He explained that the authority of the land owner (personal, municipal, church etc.) must be sought and a land lease letter be submitted with the application for assistance. He further said that the department would also help with boreholes, water tanks, fertilizers, containers for storage of appliances. The speaker emphasized that determination is key in working on the fields for food production. Humphrey Mjikeliso of the Gauteng department of finance informed the gathering that his section helps co-operatives to register with government to feed institutions like hospitals and prisons. He stated that the said people have to register with his department and appear on their data base to ease payments. He explained that quotations should also be handed over so that they can appear on the tender bulletin. He advised that the gathering should go for tenders that they can manage and complete. Hammanskraal community was encouraged to make requests to the said departmental section for tender education. Mjikeliso said that the department awaits calls from communities on anything that has to do with fraudulent activities to call 0860 701701 or (011) 689 8279 to report fraud.

Mr. Alfred Masekwameng told Hammanskraal residents to form cooperatives to satisfy hunger.

Suurman Residences participate in 16 DayS of activiSmNovember is the beginning of 16 Days of Activism Against Domestic Violence Campaign which is celebrated annually by the global community. The campaign is mostly celebrated between the 25th of this month until December 10th, which aims to raise awareness to recognize the negative impact that violence and abuse have on women and children including their entire community. Temba SAPS Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP), Suurman Community Policing Forum (CPF), Imisebeyelanga Non-Profit Organisation and Power Of The Voice (P.O.T.V) organized a workshop to empower community members of Suurman about domestic violence and its impact in homes and communities.Martha Matjeni Social Auxiliary Worker of Imisebeyelanga Services who was facilitating the workshop taught the attendees about different types of abuse and how the community can defend itself against it. Matjeni said that the main cause of domestic violence is lack of communication between spouses or partners. “Most men don’t talk when they have problems resulting in anger, then they start arguments, which is followed by physical abuse. Some women do not talk or report such incidents hoping it will never take place again which mostly is the truth” said Matjeni to those who were attending the workshop.

“The other reason she cited was unemployment, as another factor of abuse. Women don’t report cases because the perpetrator sometimes is the breadwinner in the house so they are afraid how they will survive if he or she is arrested”. Matjeni further said that some women sacrifice their relationships with their children by allowing their children to be abused but they are afraid to lose their spouses or partners. “You will find that the mother is aware of the abuse that is taking place but they do not report them because they don’t want to lose the husband or boyfriends they just keep silent as if nothing is happening -they must speak out”. Women, children and men need to know their rights in order to fight different forms of abuse emphasized Matjeni. During the dialogue some of the men were heard saying they have paid lobola for their spouses so they don’t expect their relationship to be run through the police stations as they are the head of the families. Lieutenant Sarah Lesabane told the attendees that times have changed people need to respect the law and the constitution, abuse can no longer be accepted. “We have to respect the law and our constitution, if you abuse your partner, it is is unlawful and if such incidences take place, as the police we are going to arrest you irrespective of your gender” said Lesabane.

Lesabane said that she was disappointed by a low attendance of youth as most of them happen to be the victims of different forms of abuse. “If youth attend such gatherings it might reduce the number of incidences of abuse and they continue to visit taverns in the evening alone and they are the target of rapes” Lesabane pleaded with parents to talk with their children and not allow them to do as they wish because some of the children when disciplined, threaten to open cases of abuse against their guardians which is unacceptable.A Suurman community member who attended the workshop Fridah Moeketsane (59) told Hammanskraal News that she is disappointed by youth who did not attend the event as some of the are victims of domestic violence such as rape or physical abuse by the boyfriend or spouses. However Moeketsane said that the information she received she will continue to spread the ‘gospel’ against domestic violence. “I have learnt that victims must not keep quite against any form of abuse the sooner they get help the better because if it happens once what could stop it from continuing they must go to police stations to get help” she said.Another resident told Hammanskraal News : “Men are supposed to defend their wives and children they not abuse them but love and care for them” he said. He further said that victims can also speak to their uncles or pastors if they

have problems at their households because they are the ones who bless their marriages. Churches can also play a major role in dealing with abuse in our communities because some individuals they are Christians and there are different programs at their churches which deals with family problems but they cannot be the substitute for the police and justice.

Our Legacy of Temba and HAMMANSKRAALIn the journey back to the 1960’s up to the late 1970’s, yes “ the dreaded Apartheid years”- What did this area look like then? Taxis were not mini busses but Valiant cars, the main taxi rank was in Hammanskraal and was controlled by HATO (Hammanskraal association of taxi owners). The railway station was still operational and many residents commuted to Pretoria by train. Many of the local residents ran monthly accounts at S B Rens general dealer, where they purchased food, clothing, toiletries, hardware and building material. Majaneg, Suruman, Dilopye and part of Marokolong and Ramotse was tribal land, most of the residents farmed with cattle and sheep and the Kekana royal family was respected by all. In Temba the nationalist government provided funds for the Jubilee Mission hospital, there were primary and secondary schools within the communities and a few of the main roads were tarred, the government also built houses (later called “ apartheid homes”) for black people. The Hammanskraal South African Police training college trained people to be police men and in general, although the area was not financially thriving, there was enough job opportunities for all, schools were within walking distance for the learners, there was very little crime and most people enjoyed living in the area. This area then became Bophuthatswana, under the leadership of the much criticized Lucas Mangope; Babelegi Industrial Township was created and run by the Bophuthatswana national development corporation, creating thousands of job opportunities in the area. The Mangope regime who were accused of being puppets to the nationalist party, spent their money well on infra structure, sports stadiums were built, more roads were build, many of these roads still exist today, street lights were erected, government offices such as the Temba Magistrates court were build and soon the area was booming financially resulting in more shopping centres being build as well as the Carousel casino.During the Bophuthatswana regime, there was very little crime, plenty of job opportunities, the streets were free of litter and well maintained, the infra structure worked well, the Mangope

regime spent their money well and most Bophuthatswana residents were proud of their homeland. After 1994 Hammanskraal fell under Eastern services council and Temba under the Moretele municipality, in December 1999 both Hammanskraal and Temba became part of Tshwane municipality when 13 municipalities were amalgamated into one municipality. Under the control of Tshwane, Babelegi industrial township has become a ghost town, most of the factories are standing vacant and many jobs have been lost, the Carousel Casino no longer attracts the huge volumes of guests it attracted in years gone by, due to the Bakwena toll fees, many jobs have been lost in the area resulting in huge unemployment. The city of Tshwane boasts every year on how much budget it spents in this area, however the tarred roads build by Tshwane have disintegrated and no longer exist, the Apollo lights and street lights burn during the day, but not at night and are in dire need of maintenance, the RDP houses built in the area are of poor quality and are cracking, people would much rather prefer to own an old apartheid house, , the electricity and water supply are not reliable, many areas still make use of communal taps or street water tanks. Water pipes leak in the streets and sewerage runs in the streets, the area is dirty and streets are and vacant land is covered with litter. Yes it may be said that Temba and Hammanskraal have many first world shopping centres that have created many jobs for the residents, however it must be remembered, these shopping centres are private investments and not government projects. My question now is, is the Temba, Hammanskraal area better off since we became part of Tshwane or are we worse off, considering the huge sums of money that have been spent on inferior quality infra structure in the area, has crime and drug abuse increased or decreased, has the quality of life improved in the area, are there more or are there less jobs in the area now and do residents still want to live here, or do they live here just because they don’t have anywhere else to go or cannot afford to move to greener pastures?

Mrs Maphisa of Phophola in Chris Hani.

Storm water project didn’t solve our problemThis is the time when every farmer believes that business will be good as it has started raining . However that’s not the case with the people of Hammanskraal at Chris Hani section. In the previous months of this year people around Hammanskraal where busy complaining of floods that occurred in their area. Community members of ward 75 felt that their prayers have been answered when their counselor Jane Makgato introduced the storm water project. That will continue from the previous project that was done by the previous contracter. “We felt that our problem has gone forever as our counselor promised us that this project will help us in terms of fighting heavy floods that we encounter during the rainy season in our area however that has not happened yet.”Jack Mokonyane from Phophola in Chris Hani said is not the first time dealing with such a problem, “as we go through this problem every time it rains”. We went to the counselor and addressed the matter to her and she promised that she will see to it that she comes up with a plan that will make it easy for us. “Whenever I see clouds I become worried as I know that I won’t have a place to sleep nor to prepare food on.”“The reason why I don’t enjoy this rainy season is because every time when it rains I have to live like a fish because my whole house is under water. Whether I close the door or not, water just flow straight

18-27 NovEmBEr 2014

into my house. I even tried to speak to my neighbors to at least open a line where this water can pass whenever it rains but they refused as they are not victims themselves. The second victim Maphisa said they are very tired of speaking as nobody takes them serious. “I decided to take my valuable belongings to my moms place so that they cannot be destroyed by rain here. It saddens me as I have to wear plastic covers to get out of my house so that I can go to work. It’s a very serious problem whenever it rains because you can’t even do the simplest thing like going to the shops as we have to wear plastics all the time.” By the time of print we couldn’t get hold of Jane Makgato who is the counselor of that area, but we spoke to Seun Mabuza who is the RTT. He said he will go and have look at the problem to ensure that residents don’t go through that situation again.

By Karabo Mahome

The rainy season has arrived and people have been complaining lately saying they don’t want the rain. Usually when the community feels the heat of summer around the area they believe that only rain can bring peace.

Dinokeng Game reserve was the brain child of the former Premier of Gauteng Tokio Sekwale. While flying over the area he noted the many rivers in the area, hence the name Dinokeng, secondly he noted that every tourist or business man visiting South Africa want at least the opportunity to see the big 5, however only 20% had the time to go to the Kruger National Park or Pilansberg, the other 80% never got the change to go to a big 5game reserve.Dinokeng is situated in the north eastern corner of Gauteng and only a 1 hour drive from O R Tambo airport the former Premier decided to look at ways and means of creating a big 5 game reserve in Gauteng. Due to budget constraints it was not possible for Government to purchase the land from the existing owners, hence government decided to do a joint venture with the present land owners. The landowners had to give up their farming operations and covert their businesses to attract tourists by building lodges and conference centres. In the new South Africa it may seem very strange that the ANC government is investing large amounts of money into an area that is 95% white owned. Let’s look at the facts, there are very few tourist attractions in the north of Gauteng, Dinokeng big 5 game reserve attract tourists to the area, who in turn help boost the economy and create jobs when they shop, fill up with petrol or buy from hawkers standing next to the roads.

Furthermore lodges and product owners within the reserve were given targets to reach concerning job creation, to date these targets have been exceeded by more than 200%.The Dinokeng game reserve also undertakes to get involved with projects that help uplift the communities surrounding the reserve, such as TLC, in Kekana gardens, getting involved in the community on Mandela day and Heritage day etc. Many of the surrounding community members do not seem to realize that this project is helping to boost the economy of the area and in so doing creating job opportunities on their doorstep; furthermore they have no idea of how much money has been invested in the area by lodge owners. The surrounding communities seem to have hatred towards the Dinokeng project and the landowners, instead of taking hands and working together to the benefit of all. It will really be a pity if this project fails due to a handful of ill informed misguided members in the surrounding community who are trying to make the reserve unmanageable by destroying the fences and stealing the fencing material to sell for scrap metal. The cost of repairing the damaged fences and the continues threat of land invasion is putting the Dinokeng game reserve under heavy financial stress, that could lead to the failure of the project. The project is designed to benefit all, not only the few disgruntled members in the surrounding community.

The government of South Africa emphasizes better health for all its residents. This is one of the objectives of community development centers around the country. On the other hand, this institution assists in caring for the affected and infected. This group had been operating since 20002 from Agrico buildings in the area. The group had been waiting for their site that had numerous claims and they can now sing a song titled “home at last” after the squabbles were sorted out.According to Mrs. Magdeline Mmethi, they started as a group of 10 by emulating groups from other areas even though they were in the dark. She reiterated that that was the most difficult times of their lives as they also had to run the organization without funds. Mrs. Mmethi said that they grew with time and more and more people joined hands with them to help the aged and the needy. She said that the site they were given stood as an old age present for her since she qualified for the grant. She added that the same year, saw the beginning of the child support grant that helped alleviate poverty and satisfy hunger.Mrs. Mmethi further told the gathering that they were given the site during the term of Mr. Rammutla as councilor of the area. She stated that it had been the hardest seven years of toil. She explained that there were some members of the community who claimed ownership of the site. The lady reiterated that they could not

move to the site during those false claims. She said that even though they had only managed a single roomed shack, it was worth their pride and belonging. As she put it “half a loaf is better than no bread.” She relayed that they had gone for those years until they were recognized by the department of health and some of them began to receive salaries. Mrs. Llale added that divorces lead to substance abuse those results in addiction. She further said that the use of the marijuana drug has a negative effect on the brain cells. The lady with a lamp said that drug abuse also leads to violence against women and children which have to be fought against at all costs. Upon candle lighting, sister Llale said that it should be in memory of those who had died affected and infected. She said that the light from the candle should signify foresight in a combat against diseases. She further said that the light from the candle be a sign of hope and blessings for the future. She said that the brightness of the light associated with determination and strive for good health. Sister Llale concluded that the candle light be used to brighten the ill-informed by educating them about good health. She urged parents, learners and residents in general to utilize the available resources from the department of health. She concluded that the size of the building should not discourage them but urge them to move on and improve on what they have
