This is a yummy and refreshing cold tomato soup from the South of Spain. It is so, so easy to make and will chill you right down after a sticky day in the fab weather we’ve been having.

All you need is to get good, fresh ingredients and throw it all into a blender (take out the middle of the peppers and the peel off the onion and garlic- obviously!). I haven’t given a quantity or measurement for the ingredients as it is best to taste as you go. However, for one cucumber, I would go with about 7 tomatoes, half an onion and a couple of cloves of garlic. Then just some pinches of salt and pepper with as much olive oil as you like. Again, try the gazpacho as you along because its one of those dishes that the taste

depends on the person... do you want more garlic, more salt, more tomatoes?

To make a slightly thicker version of the soup called Salmorejo you can add some white bread into the blender... this makes the gazpacho a little creamier. However, in this heat gazpacho is a bit more refreshing!

The Spanish often put chopped up boiled egg and tiny bits of jamon on top... alternatively just put some nice fresh herbs and a drizzle of olive oil.

It’s a surprisingly busy time for us here at Hamilton House. August is usually pretty quiet with lots of Bristol folk heading off to the many wonderful festival dotted around the country.

We have a full house here in our urban sanctuary as well as great news about some wonderful building improvements.

The Hamilton House foyer has received some much needed love with a fresh lick of paint. We’ve installed ‘What’s On’ boards (shown below), some words about the journey of Coexist, and a beautifully illustrative map of the building. Come in, have a look round and get inspired!

We’ve also added a community noticeboard and stillfound a place for all the local flyers and posters! Phew...I don’t know how we managed to fit it all in!

The coexist community kitchen is getting a facelift and should be transformed by the beginning of september. there will be some great new facilities which will open up a whole host of options for the kitchen to run workshops and classes. we’re super excited about it!

for now check out the scrumptious community kitchen gazpacho soup recipie on the next page.

to high energy performance and a heap of stagecraft, whip up a fine frenzy of fun.

Fri 2 Bristol Soul Collective funk-fuelled bass soul-drenched vocals come together in this tasty selection of cool covers. Think Bill Withers meets D’Angelo.

Sat 3 Wormfood presents... Double Drop That tasty rarity - a 7-piece dance/bass band who play it all live! Small wonder Double Drop’s massive electro-acoustic beats have taken things by the scruff, from Shoreditch to Shangri-La,

Sun 4 Amadou Diagne steeped in Senegalese Wolof culture, Amadou Diagne’s songs roll into action with an eternal grace that perfectly suits his exceptional voice.

Mon 5 Canteen Jazz Session An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

Tue 6 Gadjo Intriguing jazz-folksters Gadjo hail out of the mythical pan-European melting pot of Gadjistan bringing a chirpy multi-lingual fusion of swing stylings and a big sound full of banged, blown and squeezed things of all descriptions.

Wed 7 Axle of Eavis Irish singer/songwriter Jon Hicks is at the heart of this new folk collective highlighting his own diverting songs.

Thu 8 Jilk + Mike Dennis a double bill of imaginative looping violinist and ‘rhyme-sayer’ Mike Dennis and ambient electronic ace Jilk should weave a serious spell of soundscape magic.

fri 9 Antelope Original 8-piece collaboration between Birmingham and Bristol make a very beguiling combination of contemporary jazz, clever grooves and coolly passionate vocals.

sat 10 Nubiyan Twist Blistering coming-together of proper reggae grooves, baying Ethiopian brass, twittering electronics and, rising above the 9-piece band with easy magnificence, the amazing vocals of Nubiya Brandon. It’s all tight as you like and heart-liftingly good.

sun 11 Flap All the way from Australia the viper-blues of this jaunty fivesome deploys the upbeat energy of Dixieland jazz with banjo, trombone, trumpet, double bass and drums

mon 12 Lady Nade Presents…With Nell & I Our dusky-voiced hostess welcomes another stylish female singer in the shape of Nell, soulful vocalist of this funk-folk extravaganza

tue 13 Clayton Blizzard Folk-rapper and self-styled ‘cheeky little brother’ Clayton Blizzard makes the true folk music of Bristol’s 21st century streets. Rich in imagination and absolutely honest in all his dealings there’s a solidly entertaining streak running through his work. Check out ‘Everything We Do Is A Dance Move’ and look afresh at the world around you. Then check out the books he admits to ripping it all out of!

wed14 Blue Funk Trio The classic combination of Hammond organ, electric guitar and drums can take you from spacious jazz-blues to a massive soul-dance onslaught.

thu15 James Morton James Morton plays sax - but you knew that, didn’t you? One of the best young players to come out of the region he’s a fine funkateer.

fri 16 Rumba de Bodas Fronted by the charismatic Matilda de Angelis this big-sounding combo from Italy make exactly the music they fancy - which has a kind of carnival jazziness, hinting at a random journey across Middle Europe with electro-swing stuck in the CD player. Quirky and compelling stuff and much too clever for its own good (in a good way).

sat 17 Roots Prescription When this lot get down to dropping the pressure you can be sure it really drops. Drawing on the toughest rhythm sections from Edenheight and Dub From Atlantis and packing top musical talent throughout Roots Prescription take classics from the 60s, 70s and 80s and put them through the dub wringer. Just what the doctor would order, natch.

sun 18 Quirkish Delights A small band with big ideas and a world of inspiration, Chris Powell (guitar/vocals) and Gina Griffin (violin/vocals) make a weird (and catchy) global pop music that’ll charm your socks off.

mon 19 Canteen Jazz Session An open jazz jam session for seasoned players to join the house trio and others in exploring classic jazz & latin tunes.

tue 20 Alex Roberts tipi dweller and all-round troubadour Alex Rose has a Dylanesque ambition as a songwriter well-matched by a craftsman’s grasp of finger style guitar.

wed 21 Troyka Strip down the Balkan sound and what do you get? Soaring melodic instrumentals, passionate vocals and relentless rhythm. Astonishingly, three-piece big band.

thu 22 Miss Maude’s FollyHeading out of Wales Miss Maud’s Folly bring with them their blissfully over the top blend of jazz, folk and gypsy-swing.

fri 23 AJ Holmes & The Hackney Empire Bamoko meets Barking in this chirpy cockney take on African rhythms like Hi-Life, soukous and Afrobeat. Jangling guitars and vigorous call and response vocals tell their homely tales of London life in a delicious multi-cultural cocktail.

sat 24 Dj Diss Miss (Dutty Girl)sun 25 Dj Alex Scott (Futureboogie)mon 26 Amy Yon something about the assertive openness of her voice, with its combination of

rasp and swoon, somehow links singer/songwriter Amy Yon to the early Melanie Safka.

tue 27 Holly Ebony songstress Holly Ebony brings an epic musicality to her original material that echoes the classic 70s influences - Bob Dylan, Neil Young & Joni Mitchell.

wed 28 Three London Planes Add jangling guitars and close harmony vocals to psychedelically folkish songs and what have you got? Either a time-warpo back to The Byrds circa 1967 or Bristol folk-rock threesome Three London Planes.

thu 29 Lady Nade Coolly soulful, warmly jazzy - Lady Nade’s rich velvet vocals are all of the above and some, and the chirpy swing of her music puts the icing on that lovely cake.

fri 30 Cool Beans Cool by name but hot by nature, this is a fresh-from-the-oven collaboration between drummer Jason Newman and the flying bass of Eric Atofo. Expect funkiness but be prepared for surprises.

sat 31 Mankala Band With a strong grounding in upbeat African dance rhythms from Soukous to Afrobeat, The Mankala Band’s refreshed line-up always catch that rolling instrumental good-time sound and run with it - jazzy guitars and brass lifting above the urgent percussion to make proper tropical party music.
