As part of our current 10-year plan, we have made a significant investment in walking and cycling infra-
structure, including $52M of biking plan projects and a doubling of the footpath
maintenance and repair budget.

lights (resulting in a 50% reduction in energy
usage compared with standard street lights).
We are developing and
extending Waiwhakareke
Natural Heritage Park.

7 sustainability themesThe sustainability principles undertaken by Hamilton City Council are also
associated to one of the seven sustainability themes shown below.
We've got a keen focus on gully
restoration and plantings. In
2018/19 over 38,800 native plants
were planted by nearly 4000 volunteers
We're introducing a new kerbside
rubbish and recycling service in
2020, which aims to significantly reduce the amount of waste
sent to landfill.
2019 sees a one-year trial of free
scheduled buses for 18’s and under, within
the Hamilton City Network on weekends
and public holidays.
We have 10 worm farms on Council premises
converting organic waste.
55% of the energy we use as
Council comes from renewable
sources
We've introduced beehives to help
pollinate crops and mitigate against the
effects of colony collapse disorder.
We're introducing e-scooters and the LOOP car share scheme, giving
Hamiltonians more sustainable choice
on our roads.

We're innovating and collaborating with
others to strengthen our social, economic, cultural and natural
assets.

carbon neutral by 2030.
