As part of our current 10-year plan, we have made a significant investment in walking and cycling infra- structure, including $52M of biking plan projects and a doubling of the footpath maintenance and repair budget. We replaced Hamilton’s streetlights with new energy efficient LED lights (resulting in a 50% reduction in energy usage compared with standard street lights). Increase afforestation to develop carbon sinks.

More efficient use of energy through well planned subdivisions and buildings.

Promote building design that minimises energy use.Replacing energy from fossil fuels with energy from

renewable sources.

Greater focus on alternative transport options.Minimise adverse impacts of transport activities on

the environment.

Focus on densification strategies that supports and encourages minimising distances for infrastruture.

7 sustainability themesThe sustainability principles undertaken by Hamilton City Council are also

associated to one of the seven sustainability themes shown below.

We've got a keen focus on gully

restoration and plantings. In

2018/19 over 38,800 native plants

were planted by nearly 4000 volunteers

We're introducing a new kerbside

rubbish and recycling service in

2020, which aims to significantly reduce the amount of waste

sent to landfill.

2019 sees a one-year trial of free

scheduled buses for 18’s and under, within

the Hamilton City Network on weekends

and public holidays.

We have 10 worm farms on Council premises

converting organic waste.

55% of the energy we use as

Council comes from renewable

sources

We've introduced beehives to help

pollinate crops and mitigate against the

effects of colony collapse disorder.

We're introducing e-scooters and the LOOP car share scheme, giving

Hamiltonians more sustainable choice

on our roads.

SmartHamilton

We're innovating and collaborating with

others to strengthen our social, economic, cultural and natural
