Red Hot Summer Sizzler Deals

2

Hamills Musing’sSummer is here and the forecast looks good. We are in for A La Nina summer and the South Island especially should be hot.

This bodes well for summer fi shing and we have already had good reports of large fi sh across the country with a particularly nice 12kg snapper taken in the Hauraki Gulf by the boys at Shimano NZ. Hamills have got a number of good Xmas deals and fi rst on the list are two Fin-Nor combos; let’s not beat around the bush, there are a few cheap combos available on the market right now but these Fin-Nor sets have two features that really set them apart; an integrated solid tip rod and high quality US made carbon drag system. These are affordable combo’s that will stand up to tough use.We are also really excited about our partnership with Nikon. Hamills have been appointed by Nikon to sell Nikon Optics and when we got our fi rst shipment of scopes we were really excited when we looked through them. Nikon is fi rst and foremost an optics company and this is what sets them apart from their competition; let’s be honest there are some really good rifl es scopes available but dollar for dollar we think you won’t fi nd a brighter sharper scope for the money. With Hamills you are all set for summer hunting. One combo I really like is the Remington 700 SPS stainless, the rifl e comes with good Hawke scope but an upgrade to a Nikon ProStaff 3-9 x 40 and Hardy Rifl e Engineering suppressor will really make the rifl e and this combo and the whole

package only $1998. (Standard calibres only, magnums add $50). Whatever summer brings make the most of it, nature’s bounty is yours for the taking and Hamills will throw in all the advice you need to help make it happen.

My Love of Braid!!

By Simon McMillan ~ Hamills Christchurch

Braided lines in various forms have been on the market for a long time now and have been extensively used in saltwater fi shing for many years. Firstly for deep water work, where nowadays if you are not using braid you would be considered foolish! Then in more recent times for soft baiting and mechanical jigging and again who wouldn’t use braid for those forms of fi shing.Living in Christchurch we don’t have a prolifi c saltwater fi shing scene, but we have enough to keep us entertained when the weather allows. We do however have some pretty good fresh water fi shing available to us. In our lakes we have the opportunity to target brown and rainbow trout along with landlocked salmon. In our rivers we can also target resident browns and rainbows and in our larger braided rivers we get some magnifi cent runs of sea trout and of course the elusive salmon. My wife once told me ‘fi shing is your passion, but salmon fi shing is your addiction’, cheaper than drugs you may think, but I’m not so sure!Having used braid in many saltwater situations I then moved to it for salmon fi shing. The advantages of braid for my salmon fi shing, are minimal stretch (no more than 2%, whereas mono can be up to 30%!) so bite detection increases, very then diameter for its breaking strain so you can get a lure down faster or use a lighter lure to increase its action and high abrasion resistance for fi shing in our braided waterways. This was a real learning curve and I would be lying if I didn’t tell you that I considered going back to mono after a couple of early failures. When river fi shing for salmon, a take can be as simple as the wobble from you spinner ‘stopping’ or at times it can be very violent, but it can be very easy to miss a soft take and when Fish and Game surveys show that the ‘average’ salmon angler catches ‘less than one salmon per season’ you really want to detect every take. When I fi rst started using braid I simply changed the line on an existing set up and almost immediately I started hooking more fi sh,

but I did drop more for a while too. To correct this I found using a softer rod was the way to go as this was a bit more forgiving throughout the fi ght. Once I got the river sorted, I was encouraged to try braid in the surf. I was a little hesitant at fi rst because I had witnessed a couple of over runs and thought that if I got a beauty trying to cast 100m plus in the surf I would have to cut it out! However, Lindsay Barnes (who works with me) had been using it for 2 or three seasons and had been having some great results so I gave it go and have used nothing else since. After the success with the salmon I tried it for trout spinning and found it worked a treat for that too, particularly around lake edges where you can be putting out a good long cast at times. The feel and hook setting ability is amazing. Along with my saltwater gear, now all my salmon and trout spin gear is spooled with braid and I can’t see any reason for me change back. Now that I am so committed to braid in my fi shing arsenal I have changed my gear around a bit too. By using braid I can use smaller/lighter reels and with top quality graphite rods everything is lighter and more sensitive and adds a lot of fun to the fi ght. With the technology that is going into modern rod and reel development everything is getting lighter, but stronger and a lot of the products are being designed with braid in mind.As you can see, I am now a total braid convert. If you have any questions or would like any advice please contact us or any Hamills store, we would be happy to assist. Hamills, helping you do it better.

Readers Question:I was reading the article on this site “My love of braid”.I have a small spinning reel (Shimano Symetre 1000FJ) and was thinking of using it with braid for spinning for trout. What breaking strain and brand would you suggest? Is a leader required? Also, what would your braid recommendation be for fi shing for salmon in the Tekapo hydro canals?I have heard (from saltwater anglers) that a Hi-viz colour with clear leader is a good setup so that you can see tiny movements in the line, but I guess this wouldn’t work against trout in clear water (maybe in the hydro canals though?) Thanks,

Simons Answer:A small spinning reel like your one is ideal for braid use and I would recommend one of the ‘fused’ braids like Stren Microfuse, Fireline Exceed or Sufi x 832. All of these braids are rounder than a woven braid so will work best on a spin reel. If you are using a leader then a hi-viz colour would be fi ne, but if you would prefer to run the braid direct to your bait then a less visible line would be better suited. You are certainly correct that a hi-viz braid will be more visible to the angler and this with a leader would work in the canals. For fi shing in rivers & lakes most trout/salmon anglers prefer a duller line and here I would recommend the Stren Microfuse which is a clear/white colour, therefore giving you all the benefi ts of braid, but being a little more stealthy at the same time. As for breaking strain, most guys are using around 10lb in the canals, but you can go lighter if you prefer. Because the braid is thinner than mono you can use heavier breaking strains than you are used to, but you will fi nd that it sinks faster if you stick to the breaking strain (or similar breaking strain) you are currently fi shing.

Big Brownies On Light Gear TARGETING DOUBLE FIGURE SEARUNS ON LIGHT SPIN GEAR

Ash and I have spent the early part of the last few seasons targeting large sea- run trout around the mouths of Canterbury waterways, with increasing success. Our gear and methods usually involve, light-weight, hi-modulus graphite rods with small reels incorporating high drag ratings. We spool with 6-8lb braid and use fl uorocarbon tippets. On the business end we use what we believe to be the best trout lures of all; Rapalas. We have tried a veritable plethora of lure brands and styles (at great personal sacrifi ce) but Rapalas have out-performed everything else so far.Our rods of choice are Loomis GLX’s coupled with Shimano Stradic 2500 reels. The GLX is a 7ft light-weight/fast action, very sensitive rod which handles large fi sh with ease. The Stradic reel has 7 ball-bearings, a massive 7kg of drag and holds around 260m 8lb of braid. This reel has a very smooth start-up on the drag system which is crucial for fi shing with braid, so that any shock is handled by reel, with the softness of the rod tip assisting with the gradual application of pressure on the fi sh. This combination allows us to use of light-weight Rapalas and achieve impressive casting distances, which can be very important, particularly on some of our bigger rivers.Rapala CD3 and CD5 in GALB and YP patterns have provided us with great success; later in the season even picking up salmon. These lures admittedly are not the cheapest and we sometimes go to extreme lengths (and depths) to retrieve them from snags, but they sure work well.We fi sh these lures on a slow retrieve, especially after dark, working the rod tip erratically to increase vibration. This action is very important as these predatory fi sh sense vibration along the

lateral lines on their fl anks and hone in rapidly on any sign of an injured fi sh.Ash and I fi shed Stoney Creek No 23 last week.We arrived to slightly discoloured water, with the levels just slightly up and dropping.Tying on GALB CD3 Raplas, we moved down to the river and spotted 3 or 4 fi sh splashing in the edge-water. Ash fl icked his lure to a splash and hooked up immediately and nothing happened…for a few seconds.. and then all hell broke loose.A blistering 30 metre run with Ash following with an acrobatic 30 metre stumble was followed by the sight of a very large fi sh, leaping, crashing and skidding across the surface.I dropped my rod and ran over to Ash with net in hand. I could have walked. The trout ran again, this time upstream for some 20 metres.Another 15 minutes and Ash had the fi sh to the net; weighed at 12.5lbs and released. His next cast was almost a repeat of the fi rst. Twenty minutes;12lb; and I still hadn’t touched a fi sh.However; as I had almost retrieved a lure to my feet, it was taken by a fi sh. Once I recovered from the shock, a long exhausting fi ght ensued and I eventually landed a fat hen of 10.5lb, bright silver with the faintest of spots. Big grins all round now.

We fi shed on, losing two and landing two more each with an 8lber being the largest. We tend to do a lot of our fi shing, after work, into the night, as on this occasion, so we headed home around one a.m., rather tired but still grinning.

Since a young age Andrew has spent every spare day walking up back country rivers and stalking up ridgelines. He is the stores fl y fi shing expert and has a very strong knowledge in the hunting and shooting department. Andrew is fi shing the local rivers nearly every night during the season and is very keen to share his tips on which gear, fl ies and spots are working.

Ros WellsComing from the South Island, Ros hunted around Nelson and the Mackenzie country. Getting out as much as she can to hunt deer, rabbits, hares and really enjoys wallabies. Ros’ next hunting goal is to get up on the tops for some tahr and chamois. She also a passion for fi shing, heading out in the Marlborough Sounds off the rocks for blue cod, jack mackrel and the occasional conger eel.

Mike ButchersMike grew up in Central Otago and since a young age he has spent most of his free time hunting and fl y-fi shing. Most of his hunting has been done in South Westland and the Wakatipu area. Mike is an avid alpine hunter with an obsession in hunting chamois. He has also spent many hours hunting whitetail deer in the Dart and Rees valleys. Since moving to Wellington four years ago he has made an annual trip back down south to hunt and fi sh.

TEST FIRE

Nikon First and Foremost an Optics CompanyEveryone has heard of Nikon, they make some of the world’s best cameras but that’s not all they make. Their skill in making precision optics is still the core of their business; they make optics not just for cameras but also microscopes, glasses and industrial measuring equipment. Nikon makes great glass and great glass is the heart of any rifl escope. Nikon rifl escopes have garnered a very good reputation in the USA and now New Zealand Hunters will now be able to see for themselves just why they are so popular. Hamills and Nikon New Zealand have teamed up to bring the two most popular Nikon Rifl e scope ranges to New Zealand. The new 2012 Nikon ProStaff is the most affordable way to get high quality Nikon optics on your rifl e. The Prostaff surprised me as I am not used to seeing this type of bright high contrast image in a scope at this price range. The ProStaff also has features often seen only in more expensive scopes. The hand resettable windage and elevation adjustments are very well done and certainly a step up from the older coin slot designs still in use on some cheaper scopes. The ProStaff also has a fast focus European style eyepiece and the lenses are Fully Multicoated for excellent light transmission. This scope is perfect for a hunter wanting decent optics on tight budget and the 4-12 version will give

the same bang for your buck value to the varmint hunter. The Generation III Monarch steps up with a 4 times magnifi cation range and 4 inches of eye relief. The generous eye relief is great for those shooters who have heavier recoiling rifl es and who take uphill shots that move the scope closer to your eye. There is nothing worse than getting a whack in the eyebrow, not only is it painful but it can be somewhat embarrassing as well. The Monarch builds on the Nikon tradition of high quality optics with the Ultra Clear Coat system that allows for the theoretical maximum light transmission of 95%. Looking through the 2.5-10 x 42 Monarch on dusk showed that Nikon weren’t telling porkies, the light transmission was excellent, in fact comparing the Monarch with a well know European scope of similar magnifi cation it was just as good. I think when anyone looks through this scope the brightness and sharp image will stand out immediately but don’t take my word for it, pop into a Hamills store and do a side by side comparison with your favourite scope. I am confi dent that the Monarch will compare favourably with any scope in its price range and many that cost quite a bit more.

I tested the scope on a collimator and the adjustments were accurate and repeatable and any hunter heading into the hills can have confi dence dialling up for long range shots. It is good to see that the 3-12 and 4-16 Monarchs have side focus adjustments to eliminate any parallax errors when ultimate precision is needed. Everything we normally take for granted on scopes these days is present on both Monarch and ProStaff, they are waterproof, fogproof and shockproof and they are nitrogen purged and o-ring sealed. The scopes are great and the Nikon Spot on website is really useful for hunters looking to get the best out of the BDC system. Bullet Drop Compensator reticules are great but they often don’t match up correctly to the ammunition you are using. By plugging in the ammunition you use you can get an exact distance for each holdover point. The program will allow you to put in your hand-load data as well and it can be set up for different magnifi cation settings. If you like the BDC holdover method the Nikon Spot On system makes it easy for you. www.nikonhunting.com/spoton Hamills also has a selection of Nikon Binoculars, rangefi nders and spotting scopes we think you be hard pressed to fi nd better optics for your money.
