Marigold Winner Congratulations to Brittany
Sherwood who was crowned
Miss Marigold at the 2013
Subway Miss Marigold
Pageant. In addition to her
$2,000 scholarship,
Sherwood also received a
scholarship for her
community service.
The event was held on
Saturday, August 10th at the
F.M. Peterson Theater at
Pekin Community High School.
First Runner-Up was Sara Alesandrini, a junior at Iowa State
University where she is studying interior design. She earned a
$500 scholarship. The Second Runner-Up and winner of a
$250 scholarship was Emily Lowman. She is a sophomore at
Illinois State University majoring in secondary art education
and studio arts: sculpture.

Tower Loan Opens in Pekin Tower Loan opened their Pekin office at 1019 Derby
Street on August 1st. Representatives from the City of
Pekin and the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce held a
ribbon cutting to officially welcome them to Pekin. Chris
Carrico, senior supervisor/vice president, assisted local
manager Ashley Young with the ribbon cutting. Tower
Loan is a privately-owned finance company, with over 170
branch offices in Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, Alabama
and Louisiana. The company is regarded as one of the
largest and most progressive independent finance
companies in the nation. They can be reached locally at

August Puttin’ on Pekin About 70 chamber members and guests attended the
August 9th Puttin' on Pekin breakfast. Amy Darling
accepted the Spotlight On Business Award for Pekin
Insurance. John Clem from SEICO accepted the Blue
Ribbon Award for their remodeling work at their
business at 132 Court Street. Dr. Timm Schwartz was
presented the Sunshine Award for his volunteerism.
Nancy Morris won the early award, and Jake Ista
won the late award. Mike Eeten from the Pekin
Police Department gave an update on all of the
programs and efforts of the Pekin Police
Department.
Business After Hours Recap
Chamber members enjoyed a great Business After
Hours at Accelerated Rehabilitation Center, 3289
Court Street (next to McDonalds). Facility Manager
Michael Bennington and his staff gave tours and
served appetizers, beer and wine. They'll also gave

The Marigold Festival Carnival will hold a special Wristband Night on Thursday, September 5th from 5:30 to 9:30 pm. Wristbands are $20 per person. There are 100 Wristband tickets available for pre-sale at a special price of only $15. These are available while they last at the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce.

Tomorrow’s Hope Christian Academy’s 3rd Annual Golf
Tournament will be held Friday September 6, 2013 at 1:00
PM, at Sunset Hills Golf Course located in Pekin, Illinois.
Tomorrow’s Hope is a private school, incorporated as a
501C (3) , and is funded by parents and local sponsors.

Pekin Hospital is hosting enrollment for the American
Cancer Society’s new research study called the Cancer
Prevention Study-3. The third Cancer Prevention Study of
the American Cancer Society in partnership with Pekin
Hospital will be enrolling participants in Pekin Hospital’s
Lobby on Thursday, September 26 from 2 – 6 p.m. To

The Pekin Women’s Leadership Network will
provide education and support for young female leaders
in Pekin. The aim is to develop an advisory board of 6-8
local women that will be engaged in the development of
the Women’s Network. There will be ongoing
mentoring and networking for participants, with support
for possible candidacies for boards, councils and other

Pekin Hospital will offer a free presentation on colon
cancer prevention on Thursday, September 12 from

Bleak Employment Numbers
Pekin’s unemployment rate jumped from 9.9% in June to 10.7% in July. In July of 2012 Pekin’s
unemployment rate was 9.6%. The Peoria region saw a similar move, with the unemployment rate
rising from 8.8% in June to 9.4% in July.
Real Estate Sales Mixed
Through July, the number of residential units sold in Pekin was up 17.2% compared to the first 7 months
of 2012. However, the average sales price of $107,283 was down 2.8% for the same comparison
periods.
Sales Tax Growth Continues
The sales tax disbursement to the City of Pekin in August was 6.8% higher than the August 2012
disbursement. For the 3 month period ending in August, sales tax disbursements to the City of Pekin
were 6.4% higher than the same period in 2012. For the 12 months ending in August, sales tax
disbursements to the City of Pekin were 10.4% higher than the 12-month period ending through August
of 2012.
