Hamburg has a great deal to offer: an attractive world of shopping in unique and internationally renowned stores, a wide range of cultural activities typical of a vibrant global metropolis, and innovative, multifaceted cuisine in a large number of Michelin-starred restaurants. This magazine is designed to give you an overview of Hamburg’s many highlights. In addition to a “unique” world of shop-ping, a lively “arts and entertainment” scene and the best venues for “culinary delights”, we will also introduce you to “dream hotels”, regional excursions and a range of

“exclusive” services to make your stay even more enjoyable. All of these highlights can be found on the map at the end of the brochure. We’ll start by showing you around some of Hamburg’s finest, most interesting and exclusive neighbourhoods, where residents take pride in the place where they shop, go out, live and work. Take time to stroll through the city and soak up the view.

HaFEncitY

The former harbour area in the heart of Hamburg is not only resplendent with modern and impressively elegant architecture, it is also in a constant state of flux. The HAFENCITY is therefore always worth visiting, even if only to see the latest developments. The prominent Elbphilharmonie concert hall has become particularly appealing due to its uniqueness as a flagship construction project. The HafenCity as a whole is becoming livelier by the day, with restaurants, museums, cafes, schools and shops ope-ning all the time. In summer, the MAGELLAN TERRACES become the setting for attractive events such as tango perfor-mances, street theatre and stage readings. Many people stroll through the traditional port to inspect the historic boats. Canals, ports, pontoons and quays add a touch of maritime flair.

Binnenalster

HafenCity

Before the River Alster flows into the Elbe, it forms a picturesque lake in the city centre of Hamburg, the BINNENALSTER. The revamped Jungfernstieg forms the border to the south, where Hamburg’s luxury shopping boulevard begins, the NEUE WALL: right next to Hamburg’s impressive town hall and surrounded by the Alster canals. Although not particularly wide, it is one of Europe’s top ten luxury shopping miles. Behind the wonderful art nouveau facades of listed buildings or in beautifully maintained old office buildings, discerning customers will find almost exclusively high-quality products. Architectural highlights include the baroque GöRTz-PALAIS, the GUTRUF-HAUS and the HILDEBRANDT-HAUS (Neuer Wall 86, 10 and 18).

Just one street further to the north-west, not far from the usual range of shops found in city centre shopping streets, is the ABC-VIERTEL. This district is named after one of the oldest documented streets in Hamburg: ABC-Strasse. It is also home to an outstanding selection of art, antiques, fashion and lifestyle stores plus top international restaurants such as Die Bank. One of the best things about these businesses is that many, such as ULI SCHNEIDER, FELDENKIRCHEN and KOKO VON KNEBEL, are owner-run. This gives the district its individual flair, character and style. But international brands such as CHANEL, RALPH LAUREN and PRADA are also located here. The streets in the district are both charming and varied, with a mixture of typically Hanseatic unrendered brick houses, lovingly restored art nouveau buildings and modern chrome-and-glass facades.

aussEnaLstErTo the north of the Binnenalster lies the much larger and more pristine AUSSENALSTER with its meadows, wal-king and cycle paths. This Hamburg centrepiece is surrounded by the most sought-after and expensive properties as well as the most sophisticated districts. To the west are ROTHERBAUM and the pretty little PöSELDORF, where JIL SANDER and ULI SCHNEIDER opened their first fashion boutiques. Slightly further afield is the verdant HARVESTEHUDE, with its well-preserved detached villas, and the lively neighbourhood of EPPENDORF. In the Seventies, this was a hotbed of student resi-stance; today, it is one of the city’s most desirable residential areas, its streets lined with elegant turn-of-the-twentieth-century town houses, ancient trees, beautiful parks and small upmarket boutiques – and all close to the Alster. The most popular shopping streets include EPPENDORFER BAUM, EPPENDORFER WEG, EPPENDORFER LANDSTRASSE, LEHMWEG and HEGESTRASSE as well as the ISEMARKT, Europe’s longest outdoor market.

Twice a week, Tuesdays and Fridays, this bustling market is held under the old railway viaduct bet-ween the U-Bahn stations EPPENDORFER BAUM and HOHELUFT. Besides being a great place to shop, it is also ideal for celebrity spotting.

To the north-east of the Alster is a place of beautiful and romantic canals – WINTERHUDE. Here, splendid waterside villas line streets with names such as BELLEVUE, offering views of the ALSTER. Three streets form the focal point of this popular, exquisite neigh-bourhood: MÜHLENKAMP, POELCHAUKAMP and GERTIGSTRASSE. During the summer, people look for a place in the shade by the canal, drink champagne or eat cake. When it’s cooler outside, they head for the KÜCHENWERKSTATT restaurant and indulge in the culinary delights of GERALD zOGBAUM, the latest chef to take the international gastronomy world by storm.

Suburbs on the Elbe

With a bit of imagination, OTHMARSCHEN can also be classed as a suburb on the Elbe, despite being very close to the city centre. Its tranquil, tree-lined streets with big, smart houses give this district on the Elbe suburban flair. Waitzstrasse, a short, upmarket shop-ping street by Othmarschen station, is rather busier. Continue along the Elbe westwards out of the city and you’ll come to NIENSTEDTEN, with its impressively

“wild” JENISCHPARK overlooking the River Elbe and con-taining an excellent museum of 19th-century art and culture.

suburbs On tHE ELbE

The best-known suburb on the Elbe, however, is undoubtedly BLANKENESE, the prettiest part of which is on and around Hamburg’s tallest hill, the SÜLLBERG. While the Bavarians may mock, the people of Hamburg are very proud of this 80-metre hill, some-times referred to as a little mountain range. Most importantly, though, the hill offers the most attractive scenery of anywhere in the city: the TREPPENVIERTEL, the step district, crammed with old fishermen’s cottages and new villas connected by stairs and often difficult to reach by car. The area has many hidden treasures and surprising vistas, including its own magnificent beach on the Elbe.

uniQuE Hamburg is a city of superlatives. It has more millionaires than anywhere else in Germany, the world’s biggest and most beautiful cruise ships enter its port, it has more bridges than any other city in Europe – and it has a wide variety of unique and extraor-dinary shops. All over the city, Ham-burg fashion designers, jewellers, cigar rollers and chocolatiers display their forever unique and often handmade wares.

JIL SANDER Jil Sander made it big with her personality. Her career began in the Hamburg district of Pöseldorf, near the Alster, where she deve-loped her unmistakeable and timelessly minimalist style. Her success not only swept the world, but also reached the upmarket Neuer Wall, where the simple, clearly structu-red, uncluttered design of her store reflects the Hamburg style icon herself.

FELDENkIRCHEN

“Wow, how chic! Where’s it from, LA?” – “No, Feldenkirchen.” Andreas and Claudia Feldenkirchen have always had a feel for fashion. Their stores set new trends in individual designer fashions from Paris, Milan, New York or LA and they were solely responsible for introducing many of today’s outstanding, leading international brands to Germany. “If a piece is in Barney’s in New York, it usually means we’ve missed the boat”, says trendsetter Andreas Feldenkirchen. Stay up to date with the latest trends by shopping at one of their two stores in Hamburg’s city centre.

SIBILLA PAVENSTEDTHigh fashion meets charity: Hamburg designer Sibilla Pavenstedt has created stage costumes for theatre productions, exhibited her clothes in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Museum of Arts and Crafts) and presented her designs at Paris, New York and Tokyo fashion shows. Her “Made auf Veddel” project educates women from migrant back-grounds in the art of fashion. The elaborately made haute couture is then sent from Veddel out into the world. Stars such as Carla Bruni, Nicole Kidman and Jane Birkin have ap-peared on the red carpet wearing the fashion designer’s imaginative creations.

LAEISzHALLEOver 100 years ago, the shipping magnate Carl Heinrich Laeisz proclaimed his new concert hall “a worthy place for the performance and enjoyment of fine and serious music”. And so it remained, with international stars making acclai-med appearances in the neo-baroque building. In 2007, Christoph Lieben-Seutter took over as artistic director of the Laeiszhalle and the Elbphilharmonie. Although this spectacular new building in HafenCity is not finished yet, Elbphilharmonie concerts with top-class exceptional artists from the genres classical, jazz and new music are already being held in the Laeiszhalle and in many other parts of Hamburg.

Ever since the harbour in the centre of Hamburg began redevelopment, cranes have been hard at work constructing the most amazing buildings. The site, which is partially completed and par-tially under construction, is over a kilometre long – stretching from the Elbphilharmonie on Dalmankai point to the new Spiegel Verlag building, which opened in 2011, on Ericus point. The developments are already home to 1,700 residents, with tourists flocking in their droves to stroll along the terraces and promenades, and new shops and restaurants opening up all the time in HafenCity. Services started operating to the first underground station – Überseequartier – on 29 November 2012. The Kesselhaus (boiler house), which once provided power to the Speicherstadt district, now contains an information centre that offers an overview of this major inner-city project. The main attraction, however, is the

Elbphilharmonie – Hamburg’s new landmark, featuring two concert halls (a 1:10 sized acoustic model of the Grand Hall can be found in the Elbphilharmonie Pavilion on the Magellan Terraces), a five-star hotel and around 45 apartments is expected to be com-pleted in 2014/2015. Until then, weekly gui-ded tours of the building site offer something special. (Book early at www.elbphilharmonie.de or on +49 (0)40 3576 6666).

A STRING OF PEARLS IN ALTONASome 20 office buildings have been construc-ted on the banks of the Elbe in Altona over the last few years – second only to HafenCity. The scenic trail along the river from Altona to Övelgönne takes you past some of these buildings, including the “Hanse-Gate”, the

“Columbia Twins” and the “Elbkaihaus”. The real architectural jewel amongst all these pearls is Dockland, by Hamburg’s star archi-tects Bothe, Richter, Teherani. Shaped like a ship’s prow, it offers a spectacular view of the Elbe from the top of a long set of stairs. Those who fancy a helicopter tour should contact Wasserthal. While lovers of aesthetics might turn up their noses at traditional local dishes such as Labskaus (a hearty beef stew), the truth is that Hamburg has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other German city apart from Berlin and Munich, making it the perfect destination for a gourmet break. Here, we reveal Hamburg’s culinary delights – plus where to get a good drink in good company.

CORNELIA POLETTO In June 2011, Cornelia Poletto appeared with a new concept at a new location. After 20 years in Michelin-starred gastronomy, she decided to go for a mixture of casual dining and delicatessen. Her loyalty has, however, remained true to the district of Eppendorf, where both her deli and restaurant revolve around Mediterranean/Italian-style cuisine. Popular specialities such as Pollo alla Poletto and Spaghetti alla Genovese feature alongside daily specials on a clearly laid-out menu. The wine list offers a good selection of wines by the glass.

HENSSLER & HENSSLER/ ONOIn their restaurant on the Elbe, Steffen Henssler and his father spoil the great and the good of Hamburg with Euro-Asian fish dishes. The friendly chef learnt his trade in California, amongst other places, and this is apparent in his highly successful menu; the amazing crun-chy roll, for example, packs a punch that no Japanese chef would be able to match. The Michelin-starred chef also runs his own cosy little sushi temple, the Ono in Eppendorf, with a large summer terrace overlooking the Isebek canal.

BULLEREI When TV chef Tim Mälzer and his manager Patrick Rüther were planning their new Bullerei restaurant, they considered all kinds of potential locations – a church in Eimsbüttel, the cellar of Hamburg’s town hall, one floor of a skyscraper

– before deciding on the historic cattle market in the Schanzenviertel in 2009. The TV chef delibe-rately kept the concept simple: “We just want to serve good food.” And it works. The beauti-fully renovated rooms are packed to the rafters with young and young-at-heart gourmets.

LE CANARD NOUVEAUThis restaurant on Elbchaussee first came to fame under Josef Viehhauser. When he retired, it remained empty for a while until Ali Güngörmüs took over in 2005, when he was in his late twenties. Adding the word “nouveau” to lend the name an extra touch of elegance, he restored it to its former glory as a popular gourmet establishment with a fantastic view of the Elbe and the harbour. Just one year later, he was awarded a Michelin star. His secret? Smart but not overly formal, timeless but by no means boring, fresh and modern with an oriental touch.

SYLTFor the Hamburg natives, a trip to the North Sea island of Sylt is a must – and not just because of its fabulous beaches, fresh air and spectacular sea views, but also because of the “Sansibar”. It is also a good place for spotting interesting and famous faces: Herbert Seckler always keeps a few seats free in his famous beach-side restaurant in case VIPs decide to drop by. Although there’s room for hundreds of guests, it’s always busy, so book early if you don’t want to be left standing outside. Alternatively, try your luck in Hamburg’s Sansibar Wine in HafenCity ...But Sylt has much more to offer: once you get away from the tourist hotspots and stroll across the Wadden Sea or the dunes, the island’s lovely landscapes will start to work their magic and ease your cares away.

TRAVEMÜNDEThe Baltic resort of Travemünde is the grande dame of the north. As early as the mid 19th century, celebrities and the nobility flocked here from all over Europe, and Dostoyevsky, Turgenev and Gogol frittered their money away in the casino. More recently, Aristotle Onassis and Austrian actor Curd Jürgens both lost substantial amounts of money on the roulette table.

Today, croupiers in the renovated art nouveau building still say “Rien ne va plus!” and guests still sip drinks in the bar overlooking the sea. Once a rather raunchy nightclub, the La Belle Epoque restaurant in the five-star Columbia Hotel next door is now a gourmet restaurant run by renowned Michelin-starred chef Kevin Fehling.

Besides fine dining and gambling, Travemünde has unlimited quantities of fresh sea air and a wonderful beach.

TIMMENDORFER STRANDThe swanky Baltic seaside resort of Timmendorfer Strand, in the Bay of Lübeck, makes a good excursion from Hamburg. It has a scenic promenade, high-class boutiques, hip beach clubs and a well-tended 36-hole golf course at the Seeschlösschen Hotel, where they say golfing in the sea air strengthens the immune system. GROSSENSEE/ LÜTJENSEEThe chain of scenic lakes to the north-east of Hamburg is easily reachable via the A1 autobahn. The Hoisdorf golf club nestles neatly in the Schleswig-Holstein countryside between the Grossensee and the Lütjensee (lütjen is Low German for small), and the Fischerklause Lütjensee restaurant offers the perfect place to relax after a round. Restaurateurs Claudia and Gerhard Retter acquired the club and carefully modernised it, paying great attention to detail. During the Middle Ages, events in northern Germany were domi-nated by the HANSEATIC LEAGUE. This federation of guilds and cities banded together to provide mutual aid and protect economic interests. There are three other Hanseatic cities within easy reach of Hamburg. The biggest and undoubtedly most important of these cities in

the Middle Ages was LÜBECK, an important medieval trading port with numerous historic buildings. Known as the “City of the Seven Spires”, it also has many well-preserved and important merchants’ houses, such as the Buddenbrookhaus, now home to the Heinrich and Thomas Mann Centre.

At that time, the most important commodity in LÜNEBURG was salt. The town had a monopoly on this “white gold” in northern Germany and soon became a wealthy and important member of the Hanseatic League.

After the league declined, it faded into relative obscurity, but its ancient brick-built town centre survived the Second World War almost unscathed.

The HANSEATIC TOWN of WISMAR lies on a sheltered bay in the Baltic, where it has maintained its authentic medieval harbour. Here, visitors are given a wonderful insight into the heart of a a medieval maritime trading centre. In 2002, Wismar and Stralsund were named UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

SCHWERIN to the east of Hamburg, by the great Lake Schwerin, is a beautiful old ducal residence, now the state capital of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: its magnificent castle was descri-bed by former German President Richard von Weizsäcker as Germany’s most beautiful state parliament. Regular tours of the castle are held all year round. For a quieter and more tranquil day out from Hamburg, try FRIEDRICHSTADT in Schleswig-Holstein with its Dutch architecture and culture, complete with canals, old merchants’ houses and tiny alley-ways. It is particularly enchanting in summer, when front gardens are abloom with roses.

Apples in the orchard of the north, the Altes Land (left)The romantic Dithmarscher Eiderwatt nature reserve

ALTES LAND The name Altes Land, the pictu-resque area of marshland down-stream from Hamburg, means

“old land”. However, it actually has nothing to do with being “old” (despite still being called Olland in Low German), but is a reference to its colonisation by Dutch settlers. The region is dotted with fruit plantations and well-preserved old half-timbered houses, and traversed by dykes and rivers such as the Este, Schwinge and Lühe. It is at its best in spring, when the apple and cherry orchards burst into bloom. Despite feeling rural, some areas actually form part of the city of Hamburg.

WADDEN SEATogether with Australia’s Great Barrier Reef and other intact and well-protected features of great natural importance, the Wadden Sea has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The spa resort of St. Peter-Ording makes a good base to explore the Schleswig-Holstein section of the Wadden Sea, which is also a national park. The village has miles of sandy beach, salt mea-dows, dunes, woodlands and a healthy North Sea climate. Expect to find nature at its best on the island of Neuwerk, too. Despite being around 100 km from Hamburg’s centre, the island is still part of the Hanseatic city. Together with the even smaller islands of Scharhörn and Nigehörn, it forms a bird sanctuary in the Wadden Sea National Park. Tip: A high-speed catamaran ride

from Hamburg over the Elbe

and the North Sea to the island

of Helgoland is also worth the

experience.
