Fred has a hot dog and a beer at each, plus something from the menu particular to that stadium. In Washington, DC it’s the chili, while in Cincinnati it is the ice cream. Camden Yards has great barbeque and in San Francisco you can eat a shrimp cocktail in the upper decks while watching the boats in the bay.

The stadiums all have something special to them. Yankee and Dodger Stadiums are palaces to baseball. Wrigley Field and Fenway Park are like stepping back into history. Perhaps the best part of visiting all the stadiums is the opportunity to see the different parts of the country and meet people from all over. One of the things you see in many cities is ball parks that are located in downtown areas. People take public transportation or walk to the stadium in groups. It creates a camaraderie that you don’t get at the baseball stadiums in Southern California.

Congratulations Fred on achieving your goal of visiting all the major league stadiums. See you in Texas next Spring for a game in the new stadium.

Word on the Street --------------------------------------------------From Kathleen Sterling

I come from a long line of strong women - several of whom were teachers.

I think of them at this time of year when the air gets a little colder and the leaves start to turn. Fall makes me remember how I loved back to school, new notebooks and folders. I can’t wait to watch “You’ve Got Mail” and hear the line about a “bouquet of newly sharpened pencils!”

My grandmother Catherine taught Al Capone’s children back in the 20’s in Chicago. Moving to Los Angeles she taught at an inner-city school downtown at 9th and Towne - a tough neighborhood.

But her multi-cultural group of students loved her, and she them. She even made a Christmas record with her class entitled “Some Children See Him,” with all their little faces on it. The lyrics also reflect how she saw them... “Some children see Him lily white, With tresses soft and fair. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, The Lord of heav’n to earth come down. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, With dark and heavy hair. Some children see Him almond-eyed. This Savior whom we kneel beside. Some children see Him almond-eyed, With skin of yellow hue. Some children see Him dark as they.”

She was a strict but loving teacher who also taught us four siblings how to add a line of figures in our head, made us memorize the multiplication tables from a huge chart she made for us, and tried to teach us convent penmanship. I failed at that - but strangely enough have the same loopy handwriting as my other grandmother, whom I never met, but actually wrote for the Chicago Tribune back in the 30’s.

My own mother taught art before her marriage, and after I

decided to go to USC (I can’t feel terribly guilty that she had to go back to work because she loved it).

She studied under the pop artist Corita Kent, and worked on many of the iconic Los Angeles Home Savings murals with famed artist Millard Sheets.

Her very first job was teaching kids “who could care less about art” at Arcadia High School in the 50’s. She soon got them excited about class by teaching them how to draw a design and then pinstripe their cars!

Her second career - which lasted for over 20 years - was teaching at CSUN. I remember stories about how teaching on the college level was more than just lecturing about art. My mother was teacher, mentor, friend

and lifesaver to many students who came to her with problems unrelated to class, but more to boyfriends, parents who would disown them if they got less than an “A,” job problems, child care conflicts and more.

Those days I couldn’t go to a bank or an office without someone seeing my name and asking, “Are you Colleen Bercsi’s daughter? I had her class - absolutely the best!”

A working artist, she was always happiest with a paintbrush or pen in her hand.

I have many of her paintings, and have even framed some of her doodles, she couldn’t sit

and watch television without sketching on something - her quick sketch of Leonard da Vinci is one of her best works!

All these memories were brought to the fore by another strong woman, my friend Tammy Silver, who is running for the Pasadena City College Board. My USC buddy, Cambridge University fellow student, and one of the brightest women I know, Tammy grew up to own a book company supplying texts and literature to schools across the nation. Not a teacher - but a most noble profession. Of course she’s running now for college board on a platform of supporting student success and achieving

excellence.All three women spent their

lives supporting students. There is no nobler profession in my mind than that of a teacher. They are guiding our future.

My mother and grandmother not only taught generations of future doctors, lawyers, entrepreneuers and even teachers, they taught me the value of education.

At your child’s school, or when you meet someone who’s a teacher, you don’t need to bring an apple...but rather a huge “thank you” for all they do.

By Hank YuloffYou are approaching “The

Most Wonderful Time of the Year”...and that means it’s time for all of those office housekeeping and year end review activities to begin.

First is your “Marketing Report Card.” This part of your year end review will have you list everything you are doing to market your business and then giving it a letter grade. You can be as subjective or as “numbers based” as you want. Here is an example of four things WE have done this year and how they were graded:Networking Referrals Club B+

Reason: We only need one new business coaching client a year to cover our costs (including time invested!). Since this year three hired us, it is profitable.

Our favorite Chamber of Commerce: A

Reason: Hank has remained on the board of directors and as our ‘first chamber’ it always has a warm place in our hearts. Hank was also awarded as an honorary Lifetime Member in 2017.Teaching a marketing course at

our local junior college: D Reason: Though it was

fun, it generated zero business. It didn’t even put us in front of a lot of people. This will not be repeated, because though we were able to try out a few new teaching methods, that is not worth the time invested.Small Business Breakthrough

Bootcamps: A Reason: It generated more

business and leads than other marketing tools. We have six (maybe seven) bootcamps on the calendar for 2020 and it gives us the best opportunity to educate the widest audience on how

they must market their business. Here is how you can

generate your grades. Take the business (objective) and add a feeling (subjective) to come up with a grade. You should also grade each method based entirely on “dollars generated.” Are you placing ads in a local newspaper? Did you generate at least four

Third is to have an “Emergency Program.” Every year, we are all taught that we need a plan in place to deal with weather issues. But your year end review is more than worrying about weather. Not everyone has to worry about earthquakes, but hurricanes, excess snow, and a truck running into a power pole can leave your business unable to function in your normal space.

You need a printed binder of ‘what ifs’ that is copied to your entire management staff. Some of those questions to answer are: Where will employees work? How will they check in? How will you continue to pay your bills? Can you literally write checks without a computer? There are a ton more questions we would ask here of clients, but you get the point: walk through your office and ask a lot of WHAT IF THIS WERE NOT THERE?

We have a plan to run our entire Small Business Marketing Plan bootcamp without power. It would be more challenging, but we can do it.

Fourth is your “Digital Assets Review.” So much of what we do is online and electronic that we need to check on them. Here is a checklist of what to check on:

Are your sales funnels operating? Do you need to change the offers? Do you need to A/B test them?

Is your website up to date? Does it still reflect your image?

When we decided to change our name (don’t do this twice in 15 months without professional assistance) to Yuloff Creative Marketing Solutions, it was amazing how many moving parts changed. We had to change landing pages, offers and lots of videos.

What in your business

times the dollars for each dollar spent? If not, give it a C. If it did, then a B or greater.

Second is to review your supplier/vendor relationships and contracts. In your year end review this is where you will look at your non-employee team. Is your accountant responsive? How fast does she answer your phone calls?

Is your financial planner pro-active? Does he bring you financial ideas? Has he already looked at the tax bill and called to set a meeting?

Is your auto lease and all your other leases (equipment) up soon? Is your web hosting agreement up to date? Is your credit card processor still giving you the rate they promised? Is their service worth the fees? What ARE all those fees?

Is your office rental still serving you? Do you need to have a meeting with the building manager? Is now finally the time you are going to hire the marketing coaches you and your company deserve? The kind of team that could double your business?

Your 4th Quarter Review Will Improve Your Sales!

List everything you are doing to market your business and then give it a letter grade.

THURSDAY - SUNDAY

By Theda Kleinhans ReichmanCan you imagine a world

without Coca Cola--or worse yet, a world without John, Paul, Ringo and George, the Fab Four? Maybe you can’t, but screenwriter Richard Curtis and director Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) can in the musical fantasy “Yesterday” from Universal, now on DVD.

In the film aspiring singer, songwriter Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, “Eastenders”) hopes to make it as a singer. So far, so nothing.

His lady friend Ellie (Lily James, “Baby Driver,” “Cinderella”) believes in him far more than he believes in himself. She not only drives him to minor singing gigs, she constantly encourages him to keep trying.

One night as he heads home on his bicycle he’s hit by a bus and lands in the hospital. When he is released he’s minus two teeth. On the plus side he is able to channel songs written by the Beatles. And believe it or not, no one in the world has ever heard of them. Hey, remember this is fantasy, not fact.

To celebrate his recovery his friends have a little party and give him a brand new guitar to replace his old guitar which was destroyed in the accident. They ask him to test it out by singing one of his songs. He performs “Yesterday.” When he begins to play they are totally amazed. Unlike his usual

efforts the song is amazing. This leads to an appearance on a local TV show where he is heard by singer Ed Sheeran played by the real Ed Sheeran.

Soon he is also noticed by the music industry. At this point he needs an assistant to tour with him. His first choice is Ellle, but she doesn’t want to quit her teaching job which she loves. But it is also ob-vious that she loves Jack. He loves her too, but he just doesn’t know it. When he comes to his senses will it be too late?

In New York he lands a fierce agent named Debra played to the hilt by “Saturday Night Live’s” Kate McKinnon. To her he looks like a bumpkin. She, like the world, loves his music but physically he needs a makeover. So she takes on the job, determined to make a lot of money for him - and for her of course.

The storyline also features a strange bit featuring John Lennon and Jack. While interesting it seems totally out of place since the film exists because John and the Beatles don’t.

While a pleasant film it isn’t as compelling as Boyle’s “Slumdog Millionaire” which garnered four Golden Globes and eight Oscars in 2008. The movie’s central conceit may be hard to accept, but Patel’s performances of Beatles’ classics, recorded live on set, are enjoyable enough to save the film.

“Yesterday” - A Fantasy Filled With Beatles’ Music

Hamish Patel and Lily James star in “Yesterday.”

The Community Built for Life.®

By Marcia IsraelWhen you meet Josefina

Duran, she always has a smile and a hug. Her ebullient personality is infectious.

She loves to hear about how others are faring with work, their families, their daily lives. She is a great listener. When asked about her family and their thriving 20-year business, Glass Etc CA Inc., Josefina beams with pride.

To meet Josefina for the first time, you would never know about her challenging rise from near poverty on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico to becoming a successful San Fernando Valley businesswoman, along with her husband and partner, Lucio. Her unique path in life has been one incredible journey of love, determination, and hard work. Her journey to America is similar to that of others, yet the demands thrust upon her by her parents (when she was barely a teenager), and how she approaches life’s ups and downs are what has makes her an American success story.

In 1985, at age 16, Josefina had a place to live but was saddled with the complete custody of seven siblings, ages four to 14, when her parents and older siblings uprooted and suddenly left for the U.S. With no money, no job, and no family to speak of, Josefina barely clothed and fed the children and created a life for her forlorn siblings. Forced to leave school (which she loved very much), Josefina cooked, took odd jobs, sent the children to school, and found creative ways to have fun—picnics, birthdays, walks on the beach. Money was sent occasionally from the U.S. to help, and there was shelter for them, but it was never enough. She cared deeply for these children as if they were her own for over two years.

At age 17, Josefina met her partner in life and kindred spirit, Lucio Duran, with similar family difficulties of his own. A year later, just as their own family was starting out with the birth of their son Ernesto, Josefina’s parents returned to Tijuana to claim their seven children to bring them to the United States.

Josefina and Lucio were devastated but knew that her siblings would fare much better in California. The young couple, still in Tijuana, missed those children terribly and worked towards their own immigration pathway. They lost contact with Josefina’s family but met up later in California. Even now, Josefina is delighted that her siblings remember her fondly, like a second mother.

Around 1989, Lucio, a skilled glass maker in Tijuana, was able to find work in a glass shop near

A Journey of Love and Success -The Josefina Duran Story

Los Angeles, so Josefina and Ernesto went with him. Lucio apprenticed to become a glass manufacturer and their sons, Alberto and Lucio, Jr. were born.

They lived in Northridge and resumed contact with Josefina’s family. The family filed for papers, studied for the exam, and finally completed the path towards US citizenship. All this while Josefina juggled responsibilities as a mother and student, taking night school classes to learn English, architecture and computers. In addition, Josefina always found a way to help support the family, by working at the local Occupational

Center, at the US Post Office, at her local church - finding time to volunteer as well.

When the 1994 Northridge Earthquake struck, Josefina’s resourcefulness kicked in high gear. The family found themselves trapped in their apartment, lost a beloved pet, and then took refuge in the streets at a nearby park for nearly 10 days. FEMA offered financial assistance, then proved unreliable. The couple vowed right then to never accept public assistance or to rely on anyone else again. Josefina secured a new place for them to live and they looked forward to better days. They got on with their lives and worked hard to build a secure life for their children. Their resilience in the face of obstacles and their ability to see the good in things is what keeps Josefina and her family going.

By 1999, they were finally able to take a risk and open their own glass shop. Josefina assumed all the office work and her sons became partners in the business. Josefina and Lucio were also able to realize the

Our residents talk about us. A lot. They love to talk on-and-on about all the fun they have at Fairwinds – West Hills. In fact, sometimes it’s

enough to make a retirement community blush.

Come see what we mean. Call (818) 275-0712 to schedule your complimentary lunch and tour.

And, just so you know, we’ll be doing some talking, too. About our fun residents.

American dream of owning their own home, a place where their burgeoning family could gather.

Another sign that their lives were on the right path was when Josefina and Lucio said their sacred marriage vows in a ceremony at their local Catholic church, with their entire family in attendance. On the heels of their union, the couple chose to make one more huge sacrifice, one more act of kindness. Josefina and Lucio assumed custody of her father’s school-age children (her young half-siblings) whose mother had just passed away. The three youngsters were better off, the family decided, living with Josefina and Lucio rather than with their/her aging father. Her extended family was growing and thriving.

Years have passed and Josefina and Lucio now have grandchildren in addition to the nearly 13 adult children they hold dearly in their heart as family.

She looks forward to each and every family celebration—births, anniversaries, birthdays, and family gatherings over the holidays. Josefina and Lucio’s work ethic has paid off, the glass company, Glass Etc California just won the LA Daily News 2019 Reader’s Choice Award for best glass company, just in time for the company’s 20-year celebration.

Josefina Duran stands as a role model for us all. Her love of life, energy, selflessness, and dedication to family reveal her true character. She is strong and has a wittiness about her. She believes her successes are due to her belief in fate and in her strong family values. She and Lucio have gone through life with a very strong work ethic, “working side-by-side,” each day for the betterment of their family. She continues her involvement in civic and charitable organizations to this day which assist the community as well. Josefina is one remarkable woman.

Local Doctor Raising Awareness and Funds for Suicide Prevention

Dr. Rebecca Cho

Rebecca Cho is a third year Family Medicine Resident at Northridge Family Medicine. Like all family practice physicians she see a wide range of illnesses, some include mental illness as well. Her daily rounds with patients at both the clinics and hospital leave her with a full schedule but instinctively at heart she knew there was more.

“I’ll be participating in

a great charity walk by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention called ‘Out of the Darkness’ on October 19, 2019.” “I found out about this walk after searching for ways to bring more awareness and support to mental health in our community. As a family medicine physician, I am constantly reminded how mental health is one of the areas of health that I have found to be in the most

need of support. There is still a large lack of resources available for those in need of mental health support and I want to help in any way possible.”

The AFSP helps bring awareness to suicide and advocates for mental health at the state and federal level. The AFSP also funds suicide prevention programs, develops screening programs in colleges

and universities and provides support to those who have lost loved ones through suicide.

If you are interested in joining or donating to their team, the team page can be found at https://afsp.donordrive.com/team/FriendsAgainstSuicide. If you know someone in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK .

By Neill SimmonsThe highlight of October,

comes on a special night, Thursday the 31st, Halloween night.

A great “conjuction” occurs when the planet Jupiter and the crescent Moon appear to be touching in the southwest night sky. Make sure to show this to your trick and treaters.

A second conjunction occurs on Saturday night, October 5, between the Moon and the planet Saturn. Look southwest to enjoy this naked-eye sight. Saturn rings are a beautiful sight in a telescope.

This will be a good night to go up to the star party up at the Griffith Observatory. Make sure to get there by dusk. 25 telescopes are planned to be set up on the front lawn and the big scope in the dome will be looking at the conjunction. This event ends at 10 pm.

The full Moon of October is the “Hunter Moon.” Many animals would go through the harvest fields during the night looking for corn that was left behind to eat. Hunters would come out at the full Moon to catch these animals. This event is on Sunday the 13th.

Look low in the west on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th to see two planets, Mercury and Venus. Mercury will only stay up for a few nights. Venus is just coming out of the glow of the Sun.

Make a special note to sit outside on Monday night, October 21, from 9:30 to 11:30 pm. The Orion meteor show will be going on. The experts think we will see a few “fireballs” in that time frame. At 11:30 pm. the Moon will rise in the East and make it hard to see the meteors. We will be looking south during the meteor show.

This is a good month to look at Jupiter with binoculars. Each night, we can easily see the four brightest moons that Galileo saw with his telescope in Pisa, Italy, back in the 1609.

While outside, Jupiter is very bright in the southwest and Saturn is to the left of Jupiter. To the left of Saturn there is a bright star called “Fomalhaut.” This star is calld the “lonely star,” because there is not another bright star near it.

Look straight up each night after dark to see the giant “Summer Triangle.” This formation is easy to spot in October. If you get away from the city lights, notice that the beautiful “Milky Way” runs right through it.

In the northwest each

Nighttrek ReportWhat to See in the October Sky

night is the famous Big W, or better known as the constellation Cassiopeia, the Queen.

In the east after dark is the famous “Big Square” which is easy to spot.

NASA NEWS: NASA has been ordered to go back the Moon by 2024 and land a women astronaut on the Moon. Who will it be?

Fun Fact: The new space suits for the ladies that goes to the moon will weight 280 pounds with the back pack! Why so heavy? It’s to protect them on the Moon during the day when it is 275 degrees. When they have to walk outside at night, it will be -250 degrees. Remember things on the Moon only weigh 1/6 as much on the Moon. Imagine a fashion show of these suits. Playtex is making these new suits.

Some parts of these suits will be made in our own San Fernando Valley!

FUN EVENT: The Nighttrek team will be going to the star party called “Nightfall” in Borrago Springs out passed Palm Springs. It is a free star party and all are welcome. It starts on Thursday night, October 24 and goes to Saturday night October 26.

When not star-gazing, Neill Simmons is a Wealth Advisor with LPL Financial. If you have any astronomy or financial questions, he may be reached at 936-2626 or [email protected].

The conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter can be seen on Halloween.

needs priority attention? Have you done a recent internet search of you and your brand? Find any old phone numbers or addresses lurking on various websites? Are your URLs about to expire? We caught three for two clients in one week which would have essentially put them out of business.

By the way, is all the information on your business card up to date? I had to send a box of our marketing books to someone running a silent auction and the address on his card was wrong. When it came back, wasting $40 in my shipping charges, he explained that he had changed it on his email signature but was just getting rid of the last few hundred business cards. His business is based on getting tiny details correct. I wonder what he misses when he is doing what he does? What if someone is sending him paperwork and has his card on their desk? What business is he losing?

You’re probably thinking that your “Year End Review” could easily be a “Year Long Review.” You are thinking correctly. The more we are open to improving, the more we are coachable, the better our business will be in the short and long term.

Would you like help putting your year end review together? Have you done the review and need help with the ‘What Now’ part of the process? Is now the time to hire a marketing coach and hugely improve your sales?
