Halloween (or Hallowe‘en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31, the eve of All Saints’ Day. It is believed that the spirits of the dead will appear on the day. People, especially children, dress up in strange clothes, wear masks, ask for candies in the neighborhood and play tricks to celebrate the holiday. It commonly includes activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, bonfires (篝火) , apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks(恶作剧) , telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Trick-or-treating or guising Trick-or-treating is a customary

celebration for children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The word "trick" refers to a (mostly idle) threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. In some parts of Ireland and Scotland children still go guising. In this custom the child performs some sort of show, i.e. sings a song or tells a ghost story, in order to earn their treats.

jack-o‘-lanterns (鬼火,空心南瓜灯)

A jack-o'-lantern (sometimes also spelled Jack O'Lantern) is typically a carved pumpkin. It is associated chiefly with the holiday Halloween, and was named after the phenomenon of strange light flickering over peat bogs, called ignis fatuus or jack-o'-lantern. In a jack-o'-lantern, typically the top is cut off, and the inside flesh then scooped out; an image, usually a monstrous face, is carved onto the outside surface, and the lid replaced. At night a light is placed inside to illuminate the effect. The term is not particularly common outside North America, although the practice of carving lanterns for Halloween is.
