Moral Integrity also means having the discipline to make commitments, athe discipline to keep commitments. Our word is our bond. Never makepromise you know you cannot keep.

And or those promises you do make, stay honest to them and i tunoreseen occurs that prevents you rom keeping your promise, thensure you get back to whom you made your promise beore its too laOur word is our bond. Its more precious than gold, our honor is our movaluable possession. This is corollary to the two most worthwhile battleslie, which are, rst, to stay true to yoursel and your God, and what is rigand second, to earn the trust and respect o the good people around you

Good leaders ght these battles. A testimony o a good leader is his enemiFranklin Delano Roosevelt said, Judge me by my enemies. From ghting obattles o integrity, we will make enemies along the way. I we didnt maenemies, that would mean we had no backbone and never ought the gobattles to stand up or right.

Integrity is not just demonstrated in air weather, but tried and proven adversity and times o battle against temptation and compromise. Wha leader is seen on these battleelds, where he is most scrutinized, and remains resolute to what is right and true, it will engender the trust, respeand loyalty o the good people whom he leads.

The oundation o the leadership pyramid includes common values tall can align with, and that can serve as the tie that binds. It gives hiddereserves o strength. The leaders example o integrity and values is th

cornerstone o this oundation. The only integrity is a true integrity, it cannot be insincere or eignSincerity is one thing that people can detect. The thing about integrity, awisdom too or that matter, is that when it is real, it is humble. Integrity is tonly thing that denes us, the only thing that matters, the only thing that one can take away.

I you have integrity, nothing else matters. I you do not have integrnothing else matters. No one will be a loyal ollower o a leader who is withointegrity. No one will ollow a leader who is not clear and consistent wwhat he believes. Trust and honor is core to the heart, and great leadershcomes rom the heart.F

It takes years to build and earn, but only moments to destroy. Live continuouslyby the values o trust and truth, honor and honesty, respect and responsibility, dignity and discipline, and especially kindness and compassion.

Demonstrate integrity in all your actions. Let your airness, openness, authenticsincerity, and honesty be a constant reection o your integrity.

Oten engage in thoughtul introspection where you take stock o yourseland ask, How can I become a person o better character? Never stagnate!Carve the rock o your character rom the stone o lie. Always strive to bea better and more complete person, especially in value and goodness. And

remember, we improve ourselves by victories over ourselves. Our ercestbattles are rom within. By pushing ourselves and denying ourselves weorge our mettle. There must be these contests, and you must win. Thebattle, the adversity, makes us stronger and wiser, lling our cup so we canlater pour into the cups o others. The value in who we are today was notorged by the easy times, but by the times o trial we battled and overcame. Its the battle scars that make us and dene us. The most worthy battles arethose that test our convictions o morality and integrity, those in which westay true to ourselves and whats right, and those in which we earn the trusto the good people around us.

Living by Godly principles will build deep and solid strength o character. It also will build wisdom, because real wisdom is based on knowing rightrom wrong, living by conscience, and learning rom the hard won battles oconscience. This too, is the true spring o sel-condence.

Finally, remember that all principles o morality and ethics emanate roma commitment to protect the dignity o the individual, abide by thetranscending values o trust and truth, and respect all those resources whichsustain lie and reedom.

Robert E. Lee said o value and character that a mans passions orge hisetters, so let us choose our passions careully and be wary o what we orgethat it may be o good and lasting value.

Lee also reminds us that it is easier to make our wishes conorm to our meansthan to make our means conorm to our wishes, or this too is a discipline ointegrity. And integrity is a matter o discipline.

Remember that Trust is all transcending and undergirds all principles omorality. Build and nurture it at all times in all your deeds and words.

Hold or yoursel only the highest and most unwavering standards o morality anethics. Be a person o principle, and show in deed that you are sel disciplined enougto live by those principles, strongly and without compromise. Know yoursel to thextent that you have identied those non-negotiable principles that you must live band in act, are willing to ght or. Count the cost o your convictions and be courageou

when the time may come to pay the price, take the risk, or make the sacrice to statrue. Know your own Code o Honor. Live it consistently. One can never take a vacatiorom integrity.

    ~ Leadership Talk ~

Principle Dynamics Consulting Inc. Ten Hallmarks of Great Leadership

Leadership always comes down to heart, heart to heart. Know that every-one needs meaning in their lives. Make them eel how meaningul andvaluable they are, and how they belong to something bigger thanthemselves. Show sincere concern and compassion or those aroundyou who are struggling and striving. Be interested in everyone youlead, and look with your hearts eye to see the potential as yet untappedwithin them, and help them untap it. Show in the way you live the simplevalues o courtesy, kindness, consideration, compassion and patience.

To the one who shows to others concern, respect and understanding, the same will be returned. Break the bread with the people you lead.Study them and get to know them, and let them get to know you too.Follow beore you lead. For this builds the most important thing. Trust.Connection. Bond. Heart.

Do not orget that you are only human, and that all those around you arehuman too. So be real, be human. Be vulnerable. Own up to your ownmistakes. Humans and relationships are ragile. What takes years to earnin trust can be destroyed in a moment. One can never take a break romearning trust.

Real leadership cannot be achieved without trust and respect, the seedso which are understanding, honesty and sensitivity to need.

They wont care how much you know until they know how much you

care. Take care o the troops. Take care o those who take care o you. This will engender respect in the right places. Find ways to encourage.Find ways to build.

How ar you go in lie depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and toleranto both the weak and strong. Because someday in lie you will have beenall o these.

    George Washington Carver

Relationship. John Wooden says to make riendship and relationships ane art.F

The Third Hallmark of Great Leadership

Be Sensitive to Human Need(The Heart)

Its all about heart! The leader connects with those whom he leads, and those whom he leads connect with him. Comrom the heart. Aim or the heart. Heart to heart. Seek to understand beore being understood. Hear. Listen. EmpathizUnderstand. Feel their pain. Be understanding. Meet them at their points o pain. Realize that all individuals arequally important in the eyes o God, and that each individual has unique needs, desires, strengths and weaknesseSeek to know their needs. Be tolerant o weaknesses and human imperection. Know that no one is perect and thawe all need a little help and understanding rom time to time. Listen well when spoken to, and when you can, listebeneath the words and into the heart. See and listen with your heart.

The Fourth Hallmark of Great Leadership

    Provide Vision and Hope(The Beacon)

you will also anger or alienate some, or this is inevitable when you staor something, so thus prepare yoursel. And so let them judge you the enemies that you will make as you take a stand or strong and gooprinciple and vision, and or what is right.

Never settle or mediocrity. Shoot beyond and youll achieve beyonBetter to have brilliant ailure than mediocre success.

Champions always reach beyond the minimal because they live byhigher standard than the rest o the crowd, which is why they stan

    taller.

To inspire excellence, you must not only live it, but speak it too. Althougsilence at times may be good leadership, a leader is not silent when needs to take a stand and lead, or especially when its time to stand uand be counted or right. Winston Churchill said, When the eagles asilent, the parrots begin to jabber.

You must be The Great Communicator. Winston Churchill also saWhat makes real leadership is communication. Paint on the screeo peoples imagination! Be an artist. Be colorul but crisp. Use imagor analogy when appropriate as this helps to build pictures in peopleminds, and to impassion them.

But be simple, concise, and rm. Always speak with condence energ

    and charisma!

Use language and words properly and never use ambiguous terminologIn this way, you will be more easily understood, and less easmisunderstood. Use simple words when simple words will do.

One other thing about painting vision, and that is to give those whoyou lead a vision about your promise, or contract, with them. Pledge them what you shall do to lead, support, and serve. Make it connewith their heart. Aim or the heart, heart to heart!

No one can inspire unless rst they can eectively communicate. Worare the tools o thought, and thought is the precursor o inspiration.F

All people need to hope in the uture and believe in it. So make the visiona vision or good. Make it a vision o right, excellence, and high standard.Make it a vision that both their minds and hearts can embrace. Make ita clear vision that unites. Make it a vision o high and worthy goals. Andmake it a vision that challenges, inspires, and emboldens.

Have vision, show vision, live the vision. Always give the hope thattogether we can realize the vision. Never cease striving to reach it.Bring the vision home, into their heart. Bring energy and lie to thevision. Weave the vision into all you do and say. Live it in your actions

and passion. Breathe it. And never, never, never, give up! To do this, stayresolute, be condent, exude condence. No one wants to ollow adifdent leader.

Lead by example! Declare the expectations! Declare the uture. Thebest way to predict the uture is to make the uture. Provide the all-encompassing vision, but also provide the vision o the next victory.Make the vision so real they can see it, so close to their heart and soulthat they can eel it and own it. So inclusive that each will eel a part osomething bigger than himsel. Show how the vision will satisy theircommon need and make a lasting dierence or good.

Part o setting the vision also means setting the tone and setting thepace. Sometimes pace and tone needs to change, and the leader

must prepare himsel and those he leads or such change, especiallymentally and emotionally. To his team, the leader will state the direction, acknowledge where they are, and provide the assurance or movingorward. Again, the leader prepares their heart, and connects with theirheart.

It means relating to their eelings, connecting, empathizing andacknowledging, and declaring the uture state o their eelings to guidethe team toward realizing the shared vision.

In creating vision and striving or excellence you set yoursel apart romthe crowd. You put yoursel in a position where people can take noticeo you, come to respect you, and be inspired by you. But take heed that

Create the vision, instill the hope! Use imagery to paint a clear and simple vision on the screeno their imagination. Where there is no vision the people perish. Or at least wonder withoutpurpose. Napolean said a leader is a dealer in hope.

Vision and hope give condence, and a leader breeds condence. People need to see the uturthey need to see where they will be and how they will eel. Appeal to their inner good. Appeto their sense o belonging; o belonging to a good team, to something good, to somethinbigger than themselves, and to something that will endure in their hearts and souls.

The Fifth Hallmark of Great Leadership

Get Them to Believe in Themselves(The Rock)

Its all about attitude, and attitude is choice. Attitude is what people wremember longest about you. As my ather-in-law who worked in thauto business used to say, theyll remember your attitude longer thathey remember the price.

Colin Powell said, Perpetual optimism is a orce multiplier. The rippeect o a leaders enthusiasm and optimism is awesome. So is timpact o cynicism and pessimism. So take up a gung-ho attitude thsays we can change things, we can achieve awesome goals, we can the best. The unrealistic aspirations o the optimist are much bett

than the grim litany o the realist any day.

Now, courage. Courage o conviction. Courage to ace ear. Courage conront challenge, conict, and opposition.

In yoursel, and in those you lead, drive out Fear! Fear o the unknowear o ailure, ear o intimidation, ear o not being accepted, ear o thuture, ear o change, ear o whatever.

Nothing to ear but ear itsel. Hope must be greater than ear. The woro the vision must be greater than the ear and compel us to move ou

The vision must garner the muster to ght the ear.

Declare the condence that resides within us, as still not ully tappeDraw positive pictures in their minds about how condent they have

right to be, and how condent they really can be. Make them see aneel it, now. An advance deposit o what lies ahead.

Be condent. Give condence. Well-ounded condence will be therock. Remem ber, condence comes rom character rst, then thbattles won.

Have the courage o your convictions. Display your courage with much gentle strength as possible. Such courage will be their light.F

Within yoursel, ght hard any battles o discouragement. Fight withcourage any battles to compromise the vision, the team, or non-negotiable values. Believe that even in times o adversity there is a seedo equal or greater prosperity. Know that you can ride out tough times, learn rom them, and move on! From those victories you will ll your cupso that later you can pour into the cups o others. From your convictionsand hard ought victories will come the rock solid condence which isso necessary to be content with yoursel and thereore to be a goodleader. For i you are not even content and condent in yoursel youwill be unable to draw rom within the strength to be a leader. A strengththat others need to draw rom too.

People quickly see condence, or a lack thereo. They eed on thecondence o the leader. O course, there will come times o rustrationor even disillusionment. But ght hard the good ght to keep theseeelings rom overcoming you. Believe that somehow, someway you willcapitalize on tough times and turn them around. Turn stumbling blocksinto stepping stones. Above all, never show a negative or dejectedattitude to those who look to you or leadership. It will aect themworse than it aects you, and will only serve to perpetuate a destructivesel-deeating spirit. Its contagious. But optimism and condence iscontagious too, a orce multiplier, people love to be around others whoexude strength and condence. When times get tough, rely on youraith, amily and riends. Get energy rom the people you lead. I yourheart is in your people, they will give you energy. And courage, andcondence too.

Have the courage to take responsibility or your actions. Have thecourage to demand that others take responsibility or their actions.Have the courage to admit mistakes.

Finally, live out your positive convictions and courage in such a waythat it will be readily apparent to others. Because inherent in leadershipis the responsibility to inspire courage and condence, and or one toinspire it, he must rst possess it himsel and be a living example o it.Its rugged optimism. Its poise under pressure, because the leader is therock, the anchor that people need.

First and oremost, have aith in yoursel! This is where it starts. Believe in yoursel and have thcourage o your convictions!

Then, get them to believe in themselves! Build and declare condence within the team, an

within each individual. Tell them that they have what it takes, that they have the right to bcondent, and that no one can take it away. Tell them that you believe in them. Make them seand eel the pride and condence that is theirs.

About energy and passion. I you dont have it, they wont have it. Passion, combined with a noble purpose, stirs people. Helen Keller said that truehappiness comes not rom sel-indulgence, but rom a lie lived withpassion toward ullling a worthy goal. No passion, no purpose; no lie,

    just existence.

About not being araid o ailure, i our pioneers, our countrys oreathers,or our great inventors were araid o ailure, consider where we would betoday. Have the courage to ail.

About decisiveness, quick decisiveness is most important when it comesto making decisions regarding integrity and value. Never vacillate on suchissues because that will cast doubt on your moral backbone, and kill anyrespect or your leadership. In other matters, dont procrastinate only towait or more data. Youll never have enough to be one hundred percentsure. Procrastination in the name o reducing risk only increases risk.

About drive, be driving in your pursuit o right and value, be driving inyour quest to live, breathe, walk, talk, and achieve the vision. Be driving inbuilding your people, the team, and ghting the good ght to stay true.Be driving in your determined ocus on the goal. Relentless execution.Relentless excellence. This means being resolute, unettered by thenegative or cynical opinions o others, steadastly persistent, and victoryminded. Envision your victories beore they happen! It also means that

you must stand alone to express strong opinion when you know you areright and that your belie is worth standing up or, or your value is non-negotiable.

A leader without passion and drive is not a leader at all, because he willnever convince others that he has the backbone, desire, or ability to standor something, to stand strong, or to be a leader. Leaders stand strongwhen they need to. Stand strong or right, stand strong or the vision, stand strong or the team.

In your drive, remember that command is lonely. The buck stops here. You can encourage bottoms up involvement, but sometimes youll need

Energy, Passion, Drive, Decisiveness, Courage. This is the uel! Establish purpose! Set directioEuse passion! Do not be araid to make decisions! Be determined and resolute. Do not baraid to ail! Take chances! As they say, ships are saest in the harbor, but they are not mador the harbor. It oten takes a series o ailures and mistakes beore we can learn enough tsucceed.

Your living and on-going example o energy, passion, drive and decisiveness will be contagiouIt will give you charisma. The kind o courage and charisma that people draw to.

to make the hard decisions that may be unpopular. Unless right valuecompromised, the good o the whole outweighs the good o the ew.

When in command, be prepared to take command. Be prepared to alienato step on toes. As Franklin Roosevelt said, Judge me by my enemies.you are not alienating some, I suggest you are not a strong leader. I yotry to make everyone like you, that will only result in compromise anmediocrity. I you try to please everyone, youll please no one, especiayoursel. You would only compromise and contort your true sel. AbrahaLincoln learned this lesson.

So be driving, be decisive. Take your ship out o the harbor. Show yoteam that you have backbone, passion and perseverance. It gives you tcharisma that energizes those around you. Its the rock that gives peopcondence in your leadership.F

Create! Imagine! Dream! Have vision! Imagination is so powerul! Imaginewhat is not and ask why not. Imagination is one o Gods greatest gits! Useit! Envision your goal, your ultimate destination. See it clearly in your mindseye everyday. I you do, you will recognize and seize every opportunity tomake it so. The leader must possess sound reason and good imagination, because those eed vision. And as stated beore, without vision the peopleperish.

A leaders strength cannot come in greater measure than that o his abilityto reason and imagine. And then, to lead and stir the imagination oothers.F

Create! Be a thinking person! Reason. Imagine. Stir othersto unetter their thinking, to imagine, to be creative. Thebest way to predict the uture is to invent the uture. Butlet your thinking be clear, unaected by emotions, pride, preconceptions or prejudices. Be a critical, independent

thinker and a thought leader. Question the logic andequity in what you see around you. Cut to the quick.Cut through argument, debate and doubt. Encouragedialogue to develop a solution everyone can understand.Simpliy. Be reasonable. To be a person o reason, youmust also be willing to listen, negotiate, compromise, manage confict, and be honest enough to admit it whenyou are wrong. The person o reason listens careully toothers views and is never so stubborn or prideul that hecannot make logical compromises. In act, never get soclose to your position that i you lose it, you lose yourselwith it.

As challenge is declared, be critical, but constructive, as the team acesthe challenge. Coach. Manage the expectations, mostly o themselves.Dont be araid to push, to conront, and to drive hard. But like parenting, balance love with the coaching discipline.

In this role, some absolutes must be practiced. Always be objective in yourjudgment. Hear all sides o an issue beore drawing a conclusion, and donot let emotions interere with your thinking. Seek to see things rom allothers points o view. Remember to be constructive with both your praiseand criticism, and never orget to express appreciation to whoever goes

the extra mile. Give credit where credit is due. Take care o those who takecare o you.

Reprove constructively where necessary because it builds the individualand the team. But by the same token give recognition or a job well done.

This shows your understanding o how to help people grow, and yourwisdom in seeking balance. Treat everyone on the same basis o airness, without using a double standard or showing partiality. And always give aperson the chance and recognition he deserves. Be air by giving peoplewhat they deserve and earn. Its not air to treat everyone the same, itsair to treat them by what they deserve. Be air by conronting thoseyou need to or the sake o the team, the mission, or whatis right.

Be air. Be air with providing a promise to thosewhom you lead. Be air by providing yourexpectations o those whom you lead.

Be open. Encourage communication and even criticismi its constructive. And always be willing to explain thereasons or your actions. But by doing this, a leader is alsowilling to be hurt. Many times you may hear the truth, andit may reveal things about you that hurt. But hurting can makeus better and stronger, not just within ourselves, but as a leadersince leadership starts within. On the other side, sometimes tobe honest, it may hurt others. Cannot shy away rom the truth ohonesty when the need to conront exists.

Challenge. Raise the bar. Seek challenge. Do not shy away rom the good ght. Face challenge, confict, anconrontation with courage. As courage goes with moral conviction, it goes too with acing challenge. Drive to bbetter today than yesterday. Challenge them to grow in competence, condence, and character. Challenge thecompetitive excellence, challenge them to grow in character. Challenge stretches us, tests us, makes us grow strongand wiser. Remember, its the tough times that orge our character and make us who we are.

Anything less will block the ow o valuabinormation, which could be critical to ullling the vision, and to the teaitsel. When they stop bring you the bad inormation, you stop leading.

Talk to them. Ask them questions. Really listen to them. Share your ownmistakes with them. Be transparent. Get out in ront!

Push them. Drive them to discipline. Demand the goal o perection. Showthem the challenge. Keep them conditioned to build stamina in mind andspirit. In this way too, get out in ront!

Show through your own example how you are staying strong throughboth thick and thin.

Be their source o strength. Get out in ront!

Get out in ront where the risk is, where the discomort may be, where thebattle lies. Where you can be seen. Where they can ollow you.F

rom heart to heart. You cant motivate unless they cansee and connect with you. As Colin Powell says, Theday soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the dayyou have stopped leading them. They have either lostcondence that you can help, or concluded that you donot care. Either case is a ailure o leadership.

Give people a air chance. And just because someone may have gotkicked around is no reason not to give them another chance. Give peoplethe room to ail and learn rom their ailure. Those are the best lessons. Andwhen things get rough remind them that its through the battle that wend victory, especially victory over ourselves, or thats where leadershipstarts. Tell them that they do indeed control their own destiny based ontheir own determination, attitude, and diligence and that they reallycan make a dierence or good. Not only in their lives but especially in the

lives o others, i they only choose.

Seek to build their pride and sel condence! But in a humble way.

Pour yoursel into a ew good people around you. Teach them rom yourown storehouse o wisdom and experience so that they may benetrom your challenges and lessons in lie. This is what weaves the delicatethread o lie and builds value rom one person to the next, even rom onegeneration to the next.

Read the Building Men poem by Robert Murphy, 1959F

Be a builder o people. Grow other leaders. Share leader-ship. Everybody can be a leader at least some o the time.Start by challenging and mentoring, and by causingothers to imagine and to believe! Stir them to reach ortheir potential and to have aith in what they can achieve.

Help people discover what their strengths and talents are.Challenge people to dream and to make their dreamsbecome reality, while at the same time emphasizing thevalue o hard work and a orbearing spirit.

    ~ Leadership Talk ~

A true leader will be respected and followed whetheror not he has been given authority over others. People

will not follow out of obligation, but out of desire.

You must choose between Self or Service. And true

service is in serving those we do not have to serve.Happiness begins where selfishness ends.

There are only two battles in life worth fighting. Thefirst is to remain true to yourself and what you knowis right. The second is to earn the trust and respect ofthe good people around you.

Leadership is lonely. Dont be afraid to stand alone.

Cant be afraid to hurt or be hurt.

Leadership is all about heart. Aim for the heart.
