Each year we have around 30 guests

from our partner school, Paulsen Gymnasium in Berlin, who join our year 9 classes to help improve their English, which is already of a very high standard. Everyone always enjoys this experience and this is what some of the Paulsen students thought of their stay at Hall Mead:

“Our visit in the Hall Mead school was awesome! We spent half the time in the school, the remaining time with trips to London.

The Hall Mead school is very different to our school. The school has different subjects, for example: DT, IT, PSCSE and cooking. They are also better equipped than our school. The people are very nice and helpful. The rules are strict but useful. The food in the cafeteria is much better and fancier than in our school! The advantage of our school is that we don’t have to wear a school uniform.

We learned a lot, had many new experiences and we have found new friends.

In a few days we will leave and go back to our normal life. Even though it was only a week, our hosts and the students in our class became close to our heart and we would love to see you all again someday. Thank you for these awesome days!”

In return, Hall Mead pupils have the chance to do work experience in Berlin. We currently have four of our pupils enjoying this; if you are interested in being involved in either of these unique opportunities contact Mr Cotier [email protected]

Welcome to the Spring Edition of ‘Hallmeadia’. This term we celebrate our recent ‘Outstanding’ judgement. This currently makes Hall Mead the

only school in Havering to have been judged as ‘Outstanding’ under the new inspection framework. It also becomes the first school in Havering in which quality of teaching is judged to be ‘Outstanding’. Such a judgement will also bring with it significant new opportunities for the Academy.

It is a proud time for us and an endorsement of our approach to educating the young people in our care. It is also a testament to the hard work of the staff, the commitment of our pupils, the support of our parents and the contribution of the Governors. The pages that follow should give you a flavour of the typical kinds of events and activities that characterize pupils’ experiences at Hall Mead.

Simon London Headteacher

Paulsen visitors arrive from BerlinSpecialist Leader of EducationCongratulations to our Head of Music Ralph Wells, who has been appointed as a Specialist Leader of Education. This is a nationally accredited role for exceptional subject leaders who have been recognised for excellence in their field. Mr Wells will now share his expertise more widely in Havering in order to support the development of music education across the Borough.

Team Hurricane from Hall Mead, went to the Regional Finals

of the F1 in schools competition accompanied by Mr. Lovelock and Mrs. Boulahlib. Our task was to Design and Make a miniature F1 car, with that we had to design a 20 page portfolio to accompany the car, as well give a verbal presentation to a panel of judges, comprising of engineers and designers.

Our team of six, consisted of Lauren Earle (Team Manager), Max Wright (Resource Manager), Hayden Jones (Design Engineer), George Brooks (Manufacturing Engineer), Gurminder Bains (Design Engineer), and Sam Stevens (Graphic Designer), of which we all had different parts to play in an effective team.

Team Hurricane did exceptionally well, for their first time in the competition. Unfortunately they did not win, however we are eager to get

started early to apply for next year!

Through this competition we have learnt a lot about designing and engineering; skills we feel will help us in D&T as well as many other subjects.

We also feel we have developed our skills in presenting and discussing concepts and processes to many different people.

We thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere at the regional final, so thank you to all those who sponsored us to get us to there.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank all who have aided in making this challenge possible.

Team Hurricane will return next year!

Mr Lovelock

A word from the ChairHall Mead is a wonderful school for our children and the recent Ofsted inspection has justified this. To be outstanding in all categories is a real credit to our Headteacher, Simon London, the Senior Leadership team, staff both teaching and non teaching and of course our pupils. We must also give credit to parents for their support and help.

Thanks to everyone for this great achievement and not forgetting our School Governors who have guided and led the Academy with skill and dedication. It is a privilege and pleasure to be Chair of Hall Mead School.

The library celebrated World Book day this year with an Inter House

Quiz, book give away and cake sale. Every pupil received a £1 book token to take away and spend on a book of their choice. There was a great atmosphere in the library, thanks to many staff and pupils supporting the quiz.

Our quiz Masters Mr Swan and Mr Maher provided good humour to the question and answer sessions and a charades round which got the crowd going.

The result was a very close call between all four houses. Talbot eventually battled it out in a tie breaker question with Dickens to become the overall winners.

In 1st place: Josh Lamont (Year 8) with 1697 points

In 2nd place: Hadrian Cajic-Seigneur (Year 8) with 1458 points

In 3rd place: Aaron Thour (Year 8) with 1155 points

In 4th place: Alice Mills (Year 8) with 1141 points

In 5th place: Thomas Brown (Year 7) with 1126 points

Well done to all those who took part.

World Book Day celebrations – 7th and 8th March 2013

All Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in the event this year, competing

against pupils of their own age across the world in a live contest. There were 50 challenges to complete with 5 levels of difficulty. Over the course of the event, Year 7 and Year 8 were allocated time in the ICT suites and there are some pictures available for this. Across the world a total of 292, 354, 618 correct answers were made. The pupils at Hall Mead accounted for over 100,000 of that. A fantastic achievement!

At 10am on Monday morning the World Education Games opened

and the first competition tested our pupils’ literacy skills. They had a 48 hour window to compete and, once they were logged in, they were away!

The competition was held online and our Hall Mead pupils were competing against other pupils from all over the world, who were logged on at the same time. Cries of “Hey, I’m the best in the world at the moment!” came from excited pupils as they rushed to work through the levels.

The literacy games were a lot of fun,

but they also encouraged pupils to

stretch their literacy skills and test

their spelling. We look forward to

next year’s games and hope to enter

all our year 7 and 8 pupils next time.

International Book Giving Day was jointly celebrated with Valentine’s

Day this year. To celebrate the day, the Library promoted the idea of book swapping and sharing amongst pupils and staff and encouraged the idea of donating books no longer needed to charity, or to the Library. We also had a Valentine themed cake sale at break and lunchtime. The Library is pleased to have raised £41.00 from the cake sale and there were many happy ‘customers’ receiving free books. All proceeds raised will go to supporting the Library, enabling us to purchase more reading material; to support the literacy of our students. Although the

event has now passed, the Library would still gratefully receive any books that you have read and no longer require.

Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event such a success.

This year has bought great success for Amy Marren; both in the pool

and out. She has smashed current swimming records in various events this year, including taking 5 seconds off her backstroke 200m to beat her own current British record. Amy has won countless medals this year, including eight gold and 2 bronze in one competition at Sheffield in the DSE Junior Nationals. In total, Amy now has confirmed 5 British Records, and 2 European records. Amy holds all the London Regions records, both Long course and Short course.

Amy has travelled as far afield as Dubai for events and training, she has even sat her ‘mock’ exams whilst competing in Leeds earlier this month; where she still managed to break the British Record and European record in the 200m individual medley. January bought a much unexpected appearance; Amy was invited to present an award at The National Television Awards at the 02 to

Lord Coe. There were so many stars there; Amy met Joanna Lumley, Darcy Bussell, the dancer and the cast from Mrs Brown’s boys. It was a night that she will always remember. January also saw Amy go to Engayne Primary school to talk to the pupils about her Paralympic experience. In the audience was her younger sister Georgia who is also a swimmer and will be coming to Hall Mead this September.

April will see Amy compete at Sheffield, in the British International Disability

Swimming Championships. This is where Amy will have to post qualifying times for The World Championships in Montreal, Canada this August. Amy will be battling it out against some of the best swimmers in the world for times. If you would like to watch Amy in this event, it will be streamed live at www.britishswimming.org.uk.

June sees Amy attend the garden party at Buckingham Palace with the GB Paralympic team.

Year 11 annual Ski TripYear 11 departed from Hall Mead

on their annual ski trip to Nassfeld, Austria on 15th February 2013.

Pupils and teachers spent the week in organised ski lessons, depending on their ability. The instructors organised fun activities throughout

the week, ending with races and activities for everyone.

Pupils were able to soak up the local culture of the town and those who learn German were able to practise the language in local shops and about town. They even had

the experience of skiing across the border into Italy for lunch.

There was never a dull moment and entertainment carried through in to the evening with organised discos and a bowling evening. A great time was had by all!

Big Bang Fair at ExCel, LondonMr Maher and Mr Shaheed organised a small trip for a number of selected Year 7 and Year 8 to visit The Big Bang Fair held at the London ExCel Centre on Thursday March 14th.

Pupils took part in a number of activities that brought together real life applications of Maths, Engineering, Science and Technology. The displays and stalls were amazing. Many of our students will remember the Land Rover section, where they were invited to be passengers in a high spec Land Rover Discovery. The Land Rover was driven through a number

of obstacles where the technology used at each stage was explained by the expert driver. Pupils also saw a variety of science related stands from universities to industry. There were hands on demonstrations of cutting edge science as well as demonstrations from the Science Museum. There were

opportunities for pupils to

see the next world land speed

contender and have a go at what

you need to do to be the next

formula one driver.

Grease is The Word! On the 11th, 12th, 13th and

14th February 2013, Hall Mead pupils performed the musical ‘Grease’. Since then, we have been overwhelmed with e-mails, letters and positive comments about our talented pupils. Clearly the word got round, as we had our largest audience ever! Well done to the entire cast who rehearsed for six months to produce such a wonderful show and thank you to the musicians, backstage crew and technical team who helped us put it together. It was an outstanding production for an outstanding school!

Comic Relief march 2013Form 7WK has been leading the

way when it comes to raising money for charity this year. They began the year by raising £150 for the Lennox Children’s Cancer Fund and have since taken on Comic Relief! They have raised £120 from

Red Nose sales, and are expecting to raise another £50 from a “Design Your Own” Red Nose Competition and a further £100 from a Waltham House ‘Harlem Shake’! 7WK hope to select further charities to support later on this year.

Staff at Hall Mead raised money for Comic Relief by arranging a ‘Hall Mead Bake Off’.

Staff made a donation to sample various home-made delights. The results:

Mrs Carr 1st-Sticky caramel muffins

Mrs Lee 2nd – Cream cake delights

Miss Dockrill 3rd – Lemon muffins.

Over £50 was raised!

8CWL have been raising money for two charities. They have been offering to do chores around the school in return for charity donations. In their latest venture the class challenged Mr Wells to take on a 1.5km run with the class around Upminster.

On Saturday 9th March, eight of our pupils made their way to Cannock in Staffordshire to attend the Great

Britain Schools’ National Trampoline Championships. To get this far, the boys from Years 7, 8 and 11 had successfully progressed through two previous competitions, initially against teams from all over London, then against teams from across the South of Great Britain. Only two teams from each ‘zone’ progress to the National Final, so the teams could already be extremely proud to be amongst the top six teams in the country for their age group!

Our Under 19 boys’ novice team, consisting of Matthew Jones, Gary Humphreys, Lewis Bohannan and Oliver Berry had a tough task ahead of them, as their age group included pupils from year 12 and 13, as well as 11. Unfortunately, two members of the team made irrecoverable errors in their first routine and despite the other two members’ best efforts and better second routines, it meant that podium placing was denied. In the end, the team achieved a very respectable 4th place.

The Under 13 boys’ novice team of Mitchell Brooks, Max Durrell, Charlie Norcott and Will Smith all completed their two routines to the best of their abilities and did themselves and the Academy very proud. Unfortunately, two other teams just did that little bit better on the day, but the boys can be extremely proud of their 3rd place achievement and the bronze medals!

Well done boys!

Again this year, Hall Mead took a girls and boys team from Years

7 to 11 to the Havering Rowing Competition. The teams took part in individual events first, followed by a team event; rowing against the opposition. 25 rowing machines were set up across the venue and a large projected screen played out the event until the end of the race. We were delighted to have the opportunity to meet Olympian rower Mark Hunter who competed in the 2012 Olympics in London. He met all the rowers and signed autographs

on request! Congratulations to Phillipa Gill in Year 7, who was our most successful rower of the afternoon, gaining a bronze medal for coming 3rd in her age category and well done to all the rowers that represented Hall Mead.

Miss Tucker

Students from SHOTS have been given the opportunity to take

part in these sports thanks to The Havering Schools Sports Collective and the YMCA in Romford.

Boccia is a target sport requiring skill and accuracy. It is similar to bowls or boules with the principal aim to get

closer to ‘the jack’ than your opponent.

Students took part in a tournament on 25th January 2013 against other schools in the borough and were thrilled to win. They will travel to West London on 21st March 2013 for The London Youth Games Boccia final, representing Havering.

On 4th March 2013 the Boccia and Kurling teams competed in a Panathlon Challenge against teams from Barking & Dagenham and Hackney. Again they performed fantastically and won Silver for Boccia and Gold for Kurling. (The highest finish for Havering ever

at Panathlon!). Well done team, Miss Tucker and Mrs Mitchell.

Student comments

Nathan – “I thought it was really great.”

Emily – “I thought it was very fun.”

Kae - “In my opinion, playing and winning Kurling was one of the best experiences in my whole entire life.”

Harry – “I think it went very well. We got silver and gold.”

Mitchell – “I think that we did well and we achieved gold and silver medals.”

Sean – “I think it was excellent. It was the best experience of my life. I would love to go to another Kurling competition.”

Spencer – “When me and my team received the gold medal, we went hyper.”

Tomas – “I thought it was a wonderful experience and it was so close, but Kurling won gold for Havering.”

DistrictThe district cross country was eventually held at Pages Wood, Harold Wood after twice being postponed, on Thursday 10th January; a very cold day. Teams were entered in almost all age groups with the Year 7 and 8 girls having taken part in regular early morning training. The course was particularly muddy and got worse during the event. The Year 10 girls did extremely well to finish only one point behind Coopers’.

Some of the team were selected to run for Havering at Gloucester Park in the Essex Championships on 2nd February.Well done to Lewis Deacon who came 3rd in his category and to Stephanie Tomlinson who finished 46th

Essex County Year 7 and 8 ChampionshipsThis annual event was held at Hylands Park, Chelmsford, each age group having between 250 and 300 runners; there was plenty of competition!

The course was exceptionally muddy, with some runners leaving their footwear behind in the poor conditions. The temperatures were barely above freezing and the Hall Mead competitors are to be congratulated on completing the course. The highest placed girl was Emily Martin in year 7 who finished 72nd and the highest place boy was Josh Lamont who ran into a creditable 22nd place; only 2 places outside being elected for Essex.

Well done from Mrs Morgan.

became 2013 Indoor Champions. Hall Mead won the majority of their games in the preliminary rounds and qualified as ‘runners up’.

At the Finals night Hall Mead beat Marshalls Park in the ‘play off’ match to go through to the final against Sacred Heart. We had already lost to them in the preliminary rounds and it was going to be a test to see if we

could step up a level and beat them.

In the final, Hall Mead rose to the occasion, played superbly as a team and won the 5-1. The Under 14 team were presented with the trophy.

Well done to our Year 8 and 9 girls who both finished 3rd place in Havering. Year 7 Girls are to be

congratulated for a fantastic result at their recent Havering rally, after qualifying in the section as ‘runners up’. A 0-0 result in the semi-final meant that it was down to ‘flicks’ to decide who went through to the final. Our goalie Yasmin Bello, saved two ‘flicks’ and we scored two! We played Coopers in the final and at the whistle we drew the match 0-0.Well done girls!

Miss Tucker

Congratulations to the Year 8 Rugby team for becoming the

Essex Emerging Schools Rugby Champions. Having won the Havering region earlier this term they remained undefeated; playing four schools from the Essex region in

hard fought matches. The skill level and commitment displayed was outstanding. The trophy was presented at

the end of the tournament to Frazer Huckstepp, the team captain, at Southend Rugby Club at the end of the tournament. I am extremely proud of the team, Mr Morritt.

As the Badminton season draws to a close we congratulate the

girls and boys teams who have played throughout the year in the National competitions, League and Friendly matches. A special mention

is required for our Year 8 boys who

got through to their final. They gained

the most points in the competition

and came second.
