It Is Who You Know
- I stumbled upon an announcement for a position in Experience-based education and the contact identified was the Associate Provost who happened to be that advisement coordinator that I had worked for in college so many years before. I contacted her to inquire about that position and she remembered me.
- I must admit that I got that job from networking since I did not have a lot of experience in Career services . A colleague of mine at SCCC recommended me to the Director of Career Services at Sage and he hired me.
- In January of 2011, my old mentor and boss forwarded me the job opening for my current position.
It Is Who You Know

- After moving back to WNY, I was applying for positions and networking with former SUNYCDO Colleagues. A temporary position came open at Buffalo State, and Lisa August contacted me to see if I would be interested.
- As an RHD, I sought ways to engage with other parts of campus: committee work, liaison role on behalf of my department, and the like, whereby I could learn about the other parts of the university, and built a network of colleagues.
I feel like my biggest break was having a connection with the interviewer. We had similar backgrounds in res life and she also scaled back work when she had children.

- I was at a pizza shop and saw the older sister of some guys I used to hang out with as a teen and in my early 20’s. She asked what I was up to and I told her the above. She said she was the Director of Admissions at NCCC and talked to me about building my network and keeping my network open by making periodic contacts with people in my network, including her. I did. She called me on a Friday 2 months later and told me she had a temporary (3 month) Support Staff position open in Admissions and I would have to start Monday

-I did an internship in the Career Services office while in my second year as a Hall Director. - It was all about taking on as many opportunities as you can that you're passionate about and going above and beyond that gave me the experience I needed to get my foot in the door at the Compass.
- Because of my experience at Cortland, they hired me temporarily for 3 months. After 3 months, I was offered the permanent position.
- I worked hard and got involved in whatever projects I could.
- While I was in grad school (M.Ed. in Counseling) I did a graduate assistantship in Residence Life. I worked full-time professionally as a residence hall director for the next 3 years before I couldn’t stand it anymore…
- …working closely with human resources personnel in a variety of businesses. From there, I was able to get a job as an “Employer Relations Counselor” in the Career Center at Siena College

For years I had been give friends, family, friends of friends, and individuals advice on careers, education, and jobs. The thought of doing career counseling and development for a living never lit up a light bulb in my head.

- As a result of the internship, when an opportunity opened up at the large university, I was asked to apply and ended up receiving an offer!! I have worked there ever since and am still loving career services.
- I had to do an internship and ended-up doing one at Alfred State College because that’s where my boyfriend was.

The bleach killed her within a few hours and I moved right in. That’s my story. Hope others learn from it.
- Let's just say that the person who used to have my job has never been heard from again....

Figure out what you want Look for next job the day you are hired Make connections between have & want Get related and varied experience Help org. grow and be able to demonstrate Network ALL the time Do what you have to do, not what you want Forget what your job is and what you make
