The deep appreciation for the huge relief effort put forth by the Bostonians created a 100-year friendship that continues to this day.Approximately 2,000 people were killed in the 1917 blast, which levelled Halifax’s north end and changed the landmark city for ever. Halifax Harbour CruisesTo get a sea-level view of the city, head to Cable Wharf and its adjacent piers at the foot of George Street, where you’ll find a variety of boat and harbour tours. Enjoy a gracious meal with a view of the Northwest Arm, or spend a romantic evening cruising in the moonlight aboard one of the ship tours offered by Murphy’s on the Water (see pages 205 & 206).

Halifax on two wheelsExplore the city independently on a bicycle rented from I Heart Bikes or cruise along on one of their guided two-hour or four-hour tours. Rum Runners Trail, Halifax to LunenburgHop on a bike and pedal your way from Halifax to Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 119-km multi-use trail has multiple access points as it takes you through several coastal communities, including Chester and Mahone Bay (see page 41).
