I am happy to note that yet another batch of students of Master’s Degree In Hospital

Management are successfully completing their internship and are ready to take their place in

the professional world.

India is emerging as a major global health player with doctors par excellence, world-class tech-

nology and a growing chain of super specialty hospitals, striving to meet the health care needs of

the society.

Worldwide, there is an increasing trend of professional management of hospitals to facilitate

effective integration of a vast gamut of health services, to enable better treatment of empow-

ered patients and to bring in standardization in health care delivery.

The health care industry in India is taking a proactive stance to adapt to this changing environ-

ment. Indian hospitals today, are keeping pace with the hospitals in developed countries like U.S.

and U.K. Our hospitals are complying with internationally accepted standards like JCI accredita-

tion and our results are on par with the best in the world. Yet there remains much to be done.

Today, more than ever before, India needs a cadre of well trained and professionally manned ex-

ecutives, who can give the needed direction and add momentum to our health care delivery sys-

tem. I am confident that the present 19th batch of MDHM with their sound knowledge base and

problem solving capability will further enhance the 'continuum of care' and ensure healthcare of

the highest quality.

SECRETARY’S MESSAGE

It gives me immense satisfaction that successive batches of students trained by AIHA, have

been well received by the industry and today, many of our senior graduates occupy key

leadership positions in India and abroad, delivering quality health care management.

Sweeping changes are taking place in healthcare scenario, posing new challenges to the budding

hospital executives. Hospitals IT systems are moving away from traditional areas of billing, inven-

tory etc. to also cover important areas in clinical care and clinical decision making. Improved net-

working within hospitals is leading to better sharing of information and dissemination of

knowledge.

Today's hospital administrators need to cope with multi cultural diversity, increasing professional-

ism in health care management, medical ethics, compliance of various government regulations,

rapid strides in medical technology etc.

The MDHM course of AIHA has been designed to meet all these requirements, with a sound

grounding in principles of basic management and an exhaustive exposure to medical and adminis-

trative practices in hospitals. I am sure with this background this batch of students will continue in

the path set by the alumni.

The joy and sense of fulfillment on seeing one's student growing to be capable of ac-

cepting professional challenges is the ultimate. As the 19th batch of students graduate this aca-

demic year, we will be experiencing that joy all over. The mission of Apollo Hospitals Group since

the inception of the first hospital over three decades ago is to deliver quality health care within

the reach of every individual.

There has been a paradigm shift in determining the quality of patient care provided at a hospital.

It is neither the architecture of the hospital building nor the number of tests and procedures the

patient has to undergo, which determines whether the hospital is good or bad. It is the positive

experience and outcome that counts – the patient's health.

The graduates of AIHA are trained in the Apollo tradition of consummate excellence of the high-

est standards. The graduates are trained to practice innovative thinking and have the demon-

Healthcare is among the fastest growing industries in India and abroad because of increasing pop-

ulation and life expectancy, discovery of new diseases and treatment modalities, organizational

complexities, complex rules and regulations, higher expectations, and demand for efficiency as

well as enhanced quality of care.

It is a known fact that healthcare industry is recession proof and trained healthcare professionals

comprise the biggest segment of interstate and international migration. The opportunities for em-

ployment and entrepreneurship in healthcare are limited only by one's imagination. A high major-

ity of employment opportunities in healthcare are outside the four walls of the hospitals.

The graduates of Apollo Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation's Master's degree programs

are serving in progressively responsible positions in a wide variety of healthcare related occupa-

tions in India and abroad. A sample of their areas of employment include hospital operations,

quality control, administration, home health care, assisted living, health insurance, healthcare IT,

consulting, medical law, medical tourism, hospital risk management, public health, research or-

ganizations, NGOs, and the like.

As postgraduate degree holders, one must co-annually pursue additional specialized qualifications

in areas of personal interest as well as areas of future professional opportunities a decade or two

down the career path. A recent advertisement for a Chief Operating Officer (COO) for a leading

hospital in India required over 30 different skill sets. They ranged from achieving hospital's objec-

tives, effective administration of all operations collective responsibility for corporate governance,

working with CEOs and HODs to ensure value for money activities are auctioned and audit recom-

mendations are implemented.

The responsibility also included disaster management, accreditation, widening the corporate and

TPA customer base, coordinating IT activities, and of course cost containment to me on a few. The

salary range given is Rs.20 – 30 lakh P.A. and the candidate is expected to have 10 to 18 years ex-

perience.

To be successful in healthcare, one should be able to balance hard and so skills. To achieve bal-

ance between hard and so skills, one need to: (1) admit that so skills are important, (2) rethink

hard and so skills, and (3) get help from communications coach. Try to be professional and ethical.

Hopefully, 50 years down the road, you can also say, “I have been working for 50 years but never

applied for a job in life.” Good luck!

Apollo Institute of hospital administration (AIHA), established in 1994,offers Master's Degree in Hospital

Management. It is affiliated to Osmania University, approved by the AICTE and sponsored by Apollo

Hospitals Educational & Research Foundation. AIHA has completed fifteen eventful years of teaching

and research.It has trained and placed over 450 students who are in progressively responsible leader-

ship positions in hospitals and health care institutions in India and abroad.

The location and attachment of the institute to the Apollo Health City in Hyderabad, with access to its

resources, places AIHA in a class by itself. The president of the Governing body of AIHA is Padma Vibhu-

shan, Dr.Prathap C.Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group.

The Institute is located within the premises of Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad in a 30-acre scenic environ-

ment with a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The Institute’s library is well equipped with a wide-range

of books on Hospital Management. The library also subscribes to a 30 number of National journals on

healthcare management, marketing, economics, finance and general management. At present, there

are about 2553 titles with 4,679 volumes of textbooks. Reports of hospital visits, “Know Your Hospi-

tal” (KYH), presentations, hospital study tours and dissertations constitute a very important resource

base of the Institute.

The Institute’s Computer Center is equipped with state of the art systems. The entire center is connect-

ed through a LAN to facilitate sharing of resources. These facilities are offered with a view to provide

hands-on training on relevant packages like, Hospital Information Systems (HIS) and applications in busi-

ness and hospital management. Students have access to the Internet and are encouraged to use infor-

mation available on the net for the purpose of academic assignments.

The institute also has a spacious Seminar hall with a capacity to seat 150 people. Weekly seminars and

presentations by guest faculty and students are held here. It is well equipped with various audio-visual

aids including overhead projectors and LCD projectors.

The institute’s Library is well equipped with a wide range of latest books on Business Administration,

Hospital Management, and allied subjects. The library also subscribes to a number of foreign and Indian

journals, specifically on healthcare marketing, hospital administration, and general management. At

present, there are about 2,553 titles with 4,679 volumes of textbooks. Selected books are being added

periodically to keep it up to date. Comfortable arrangements are provided to enable students to read

and refer books, periodicals, journals, economic dailies and EBSCO online journals database subscribed,

which enables access to 160 International E- Journals. In addition to the above, the library has become a

treasure trove of dissertation work, hospital study tour reports, and KYH reports, which have been gen-

erated by the previous Fourteen batches of MHM students.

Nature and Extent of involvement of faculty and students in academic affairs/ improvements

At regular fortnightly meetings of faculty all issues pertaining to syllabus, its coverage, academic pro-

grammes, student attendance, discipline, seminars etc.. will be discussed thoroughly. There is a total

involvement of faculty in running the institute and maintenance of academic standards.

In organization of various activities like seminars, foundation day celebrations students are deeply in-

volved. They are involved right from conceptualization stage. Open House sessions provide regular op-

portunity to students for offering their suggestions for improvement.

MASTER'S DEGREE IN HOSPITAL MANAGEMENT

The course curriculum is spread over four semesters of classroom instruction and practicals/

Internship. The first and second semester subjects offer an in-depth knowledge about the funda-

mentals of business administration with special emphasis on business environment, organization

theory, quantitative methods, and computers in administration. The third and fourth semester

introduces students to subjects of hospital management and information systems and total quali-

ty management etc. These courses strengthen functional skills and deepen the understanding of

the multi-dimensional environment in which healthcare organizations operate.

Care is taken to provide exposure to various types of hospitals of different ownership patterns,

organizational design, services, policy issues.

SALIENT FEATURES

The cardinal concern of AIHA is to promote the philosophy of emphasizing self-learning. This re-

quires an analytical mind, which proactively seeks the right knowledge, acquires the right skills

and right attitudes. Helping the students develop better managerial capabilities and effectiveness

is the prime object of the Institute.

Classroom learning is meant primarily for the theoretical inputs, which subsumes conceptual clar-

ity, knowledge base, developing sensitivity to the business environment. Team learning is an

effective approach, which AIHA has adopted. The student is invariably, put to work in teams all

through his / her stay with Institute, since team management and team working is a prerequisite

for a successful manager. Exchange of ideas, opinions, experiences are encouraged in the class-

room, in teams, through group discussions and presentations.

Case Method pioneered at Harvard Business School is being adopted. Cases illustrating the con-

textual and process related aspects, which characterize hospital organizational problems, are

used. This has been utilized since it forces decision-making under simulated hospital conditions

and ensures optimum individual learning.

tion and principles of management,

Case studies based on real-life situations from hospital and industrial establishments which re-

quire critical and rational analysis,

Guest lectures from prominent executives of hospital and other industries to share their experi-

Weekly seminars are a regular feature. Speakers from various functional areas are invited to
