Director’s Note HAIR has an important place in the American tradition of free-dom, in particular the freedom of self-expression.

Just as the material is about people who confront issues many might want to ignore, the structure of the show forces its audience to notice detailed parts of a community that might be overlooked in a more complex plot. ! e form is necessary for the function. Rather than pro-viding a neat story-line, the show challenges viewers to grapple with the material that is presented. HAIR might even ask more questions than it answers.

We have striven to make the show feel relevant while preserv-ing its place in cultural history. ! is show exposes people who might not want to conform, individuals who are brave enough to imagine that they might not want to emulate their parents and the presiding culture. It em-braces human beings who yearn to feel, and who, to varying degrees, % nd solace in a community they’ve created for themselves.

Doing this show at Columbia, with actors from freshmen to graduate and General Studies students, has allowed for profound friend-ship and love to be poignant even o" stage. Each person involved in this production has been irreplaceable and unforgettable— it’s hard to let it go because the past few months have been extraordinary.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as we’ve enjoyed the process.

With love,Katie Cacouris
