The issue Damage caused by hail impacts can cause major delays due to time-consuming inspections and repairs. The impact of hail damage on the aerodynamics of an airplane is a complex factor to assess, but it is vital. The shape and the size of the defects vary depending on weather conditions. The most common way of analyzing the damage level is geometric measurement (length, width and depth) of each dent found. If manually inspected, the visual inspection will take 4-5 hours per square meter. The adaptive solution developed by AFI KLM E&M With the use of a CREAFORM HandySCAN 3D laser scanner, KLM E&M can generate large quantities of extremely accurate data to conduct deeper analysis of the hail damage. The 3D scanner is a short range solution for inspecting hail damage. With the use of automated inspection MACROs, inspection time can be cut from 4-5 hours per square meter to just 30 minutes per square meter, shortening inspection time by up with 80%. Plus, it makes it possible to detect and measure defects according to configurable criteria and output data (i.e. inspection results can show which dents are beyond allowable damage limits). The output can be generated in a variety of formats (Excel, PDF, CAD data, etc.). Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance has developed a cost- and time-saving solution for inspecting and measuring hail impact damage to airframes. On a Boeing 777, for example, the area to be inspected measures no less than 120sq.m.… HAIL DAMAGE INSPECTION WITH 3D-SCANNING! With the use of 3D scanning we can reduce inspectiontime to 30 minutes per square meter (-80%)!“ ”

And this is only the beginning!3D scanning technology can be used in multiple ways. Which means that AFI KLM E&M will

continue to develop 3D scanning technology within the company for:
