Shirts for Mrs.Hoffmann by Presley Weiler

As you know, Skylar Dockter, Madison Kadrmas, and Christopher Dean have been sell-

ing t-shirts to help raise money for Mrs. Hoffmann’s chemo-therapy. So far they have made

over $1,000 in funds selling the shirts. Over 100 shirts have been sold.

Q: Who was involved?

A: Skylar Dockter, Mrs. Dockter, Madison Kadrmas, and Christopher Dean

Q: Who thought of making and selling shirts?

A: We came up with it ourselves.

Q: Who made the shirts?

A: Custom Design made them, Mrs. Dockter bought the shirts, and once we got enough

money, we paid her back.

Q: When did you give Mrs. Hoffmann the check?

A: We gave it to her at the December assembly.

We all wish Mrs. Hoffmann the best of wishes as she continues her treatment for cancer.

Book Report

Title: The Mark of Athena The Mark of Athena is the 3rd book in the ‘Heroes of

Olympus’ series. Mark of Athena is a good book, full of suspense

and mysteries. If you are looking for an adventure, this is a good

book for you, but beware; this book is full of twists and turns. Rick

Riordan spins a powerful, mythical tale in The Mark of Athena. (This

book can be found in our library.)

A Trillion Dollar Coin

Is this really the answer to the United States debt crisis?

As the national debt surpasses 16 trillion dollars ($16,000,000,000,000), we are all

desperately trying to find a solution to bring this mind-bogglingly large amount down.

One interesting solution was put forth on the Firedoglake blog back in 2011. The solution

recalled some obscure laws that were passed in the

1990’s that state that the government can issue plati-

num coins signifying any value, even a trillion dollars.

At first the suggestion was considered impractical,

but now it is being speculated as possible. Nobel

Peace Prize Winner Paul Krugman, Economist Mark

Thoma and New York Representative Jerrold Nadler

are some of the most prominent voices in the fight

for the coin instead of the usual solution, raising the

national debt ceiling. The national debt ceiling is the maximum amount of money that

Congress will allow the government to borrow and is increasingly becoming the easiest,

short-term solution to the rising debt. If the trillion dollar coin was issued by the Treas-

ury, the Treasury could deposit it in the Federal Reserve in exchange for cash that would

then be used to pay off the debt. This coin actually wouldn’t have

to be made out of solid platinum because the 1990’s laws also

state that the Treasury can legally put any denomination on a coin

with a small platinum composition. John Boehner and Barack

Obama are among some of the candidates that would be shown

on the coin, but the decision hasn’t been made yet. Unfortunately

the debt ceiling crisis is much more serious than even the fiscal

cliff and wouldn’t probably be solved with something as simple

as a trillion dollar coin. Then again…Barack Obama did say in his

presidential slogan that he would bring big “Change” to this

country.

Voting Recently the country elected the President of the United States, Barack Obama, back into the presidency.

Mitt Romney was the choice for Republicans, while President Obama is on the Democratic side. Here are

their speeches about their opinions on education.

President Obama’s speech: “Getting the best possible education has never been more important than it is

right now. And that’s because in today’s world, a good job requires a good education. And it doesn’t mat-

ter where you are working, if you do not have a good education, you are not going to be able to succeed.

Over the next 10 years, nearly half of all new jobs will require a level of education beyond a high school

degree. But even after you graduate, you’re going to need some additional education.

Unfortunately, the reality is too many students are not prepared across our country. Too many leave

school without the skills they need to get a job that pays. Today, as many as a quarter of American stu-

dents are not finishing high school. The quality of our math and science education lags behind many

other nations. America has fallen to ninth in the proportion of young people with a college degree. We

used to be number one, and we’re now number nine. That’s not acceptable.”

Mitt Romney’s speech: Romney believes that education is a central aspect of the American Dream.

He assists wide-ranging reforms to the education system, and would take the original step of tying teach-

ers’ allowances to their results instead of to the administration. In addition, Romney will implement meas-

ures that would expand parental role in education.

“… education has to be held at the local and state level, not at the federal level. We need to get the federal

government out of education. And secondly, all the talk about we need smaller classroom size, is a look

that's promoted by the teachers unions to hire more teachers. We looked at what drives good education in

our state. What we found as the best thing for education is great teachers, hire the very best and brightest

to be teachers, pay them properly, make sure that you have school choice, test your kids to see if they are

meeting the standards that need to be met, and make sure that you put the parents in charge.”

The votes turned out like this:

Governor Romney: 206 electoral votes

President Obama: 332 electoral votes

President Barack Obama was re-elected as President of the

United States.

Mass Effect 3 By Payton Berg

Next Is Mass Effect 3, the Most Sold Game of 2012.

This game, for people who haven’t played the previous games, is an RPG or Role Playing Game. That

means the game can change depending on your choices and actions. But Mass Effect isn’t just about talking and

shooting, it does focus on the game play, too. Don’t worry if you haven’t played the others because it explains it

pretty well in the first ten minutes and even better in the next hour with cameos from the previous games.

The up side to playing the last two is great, not only do you understand the game and characters better but

previous decisions from them will also mass-ly effect your game, too. You can also see the changes they have made

with this game. With new abilities, choices, and weapons, the Mass Effect series definitely just a little bit better. But

that’s not all, if you hate cut scenes and you are just a war machine, you can adjust that and vise versa.

The really hardest decision in the game is choosing is the red gun or the green one.

HALO 4

This was probably one of the most anticipated games of the year, and that spot is held by HALO 4.

People who have played it know that the $60 pricing is worth it after you got past the slightly confusing

setup. For those who don’t know, HALO 4 is the fourth halo game in the “HALO Trilogy.” Yes, I know that

doesn’t make sense, but that’s how it goes. It’s the eighth in the HALO series and for those who have played the

whole game; you know it won’t be the last.

The release date of HALO 4 made $220 million dollars, the most a Microsoft game has ever made. With all

the new features and the total reproduction of the game’s graphics engine used to make the game, it definitely

shadowed Halo: Reach with its detail and lighting and also the return of the Chief.

People have also noticed that the Bungie logo was not on or in the game, and that’s because they refused

the $220 million dollar game. That may make you say those guys are idiots, but the reason they refused the eighth

installment of the best selling series is because the game cost more than they expected to get . But Bungie wasn’t

the only game development company involved in the making of the Halo games; that company is 343 Industries.

343 Industries may make you think of the character “343 Guilty Spark” which Spark was actually named

after the company that was made by Microsoft to oversee “HALO Combat Evolved” and soon the rest of the bil-

lion dollar franchise. Since 343 Industries was made by Microsoft, they do own it so don’t plan to see a game that’s

not Halo with the 343 name on it anytime soon. Now to the game play.

The game play is definitely a whole new experience not only because of the completely new graphics but

because of the whole new element, the Prometheans. The Forerunner guards are definitely no mach to Master

Chief, but they come close with their Hardlight Shields and teleporting abilities. Anything else you’ll have to play

the game yourself because there are way too many features to explain.

For HALO 4, I give it a definite 10/10

Apps World will be returning to America in 2013 for two days of engagement and

high level insight and discussion around one of the largest growing industries - mobile

apps. Apps World North America will be taking place in the technical capital of the

world San Francisco on February 7th-8th 2013 at the Moscone Center. They are ex-

pecting over 5000 developers, mobile marketers, mobile operators, device manufac-

turers, platform owners and industry professionals for 9 different targeted workshop

tracks, speed meeting, 1-1 meetings, parties, tackling a spectrum of issues across the

app ecosystem. The event will include 4 free to attend developer workshop tracks and

a free exhibition with over 150 exhibitors.

Assemblies

Our assemblies at HJH have been great

thanks to everyone at Hagen. They have

been fun filled with flash mobs, minute-to-

win it games, and skits demonstrating being

respectful, responsible, and cooperative. A

BIG thank you goes out to everyone who has

put in the time to make our assemblies

memorable!!

With the new semester at Hagen, a

lot of people are switching to new

classes. The electives at Hagen are all

very fun and interesting, and people

are excited for their new classes. But

could there be other electives students

want to take? Some students say they

do want other classes. Students have

said they would like classes such as

Strings or Orchestra, Creative Writ-

ing, and other additional Tech classes.

What do you think? Ask your friends

or think of more electives. Maybe

someday Hagen can have even more

fun classes for you to get excited

about each semester.

Students have the opportunity to join Jazz Band, which is directed by Mr. Dykema. The instruments in-

volved include bass, guitar, trap set, brass, auxiliary percussion, flute, and piano. The date of our holiday concert

was Tuesday, December 18, at 7:00 PM.

Here is my interview with Mr.Dykema

Q: What kind of songs do you play in Jazz Band?

A: We play Swing, Blues, Rock, and Ballads.

Q: How many people are in Jazz Band?

A: There are about 20 people in Jazz Band.

Q: Do you have a favorite Jazz Band song?

A: No, I like all of them.

Q: How many concerts are there?

A: There are 2: A Christmas Concert and another

in March.

Honor Choir is an extracurricular activity for those who

like to sing. Honor Choir is for both 7th and 8th graders, and we

practice at 8:00 a.m. every Wednesday and Thursday morning be-

fore school. You do not have to be in regular choir to be in

Honor Choir. Everyone is welcome!

The Life of a 12-

Year-Old Boy By Lillyanna Connaughton

This is a 12-year-old boy’s lifestyle. Kayne

lives in Dickinson, North Dakota with his grandma,

grandpa, and dad. Kayne answers some questions about

his life. Read on to understand the life of a young boy.

Who is your hero? Why? If you could change your

life to be just life your hero, would you?

My dad, because he is a great role model. He doesn’t

yell when someone does something wrong, he’s chill

and calm, laid back. No, I would not like to be just like

my dad because I like who I am. It would be cool to

have a few personality traits like him, but that’s it.

In about 20 years, how do you see your self and your

life?

I imagine myself working as a petroleum engineer. I

imagine myself being married and having two kids.

If you could change one thing in your life, what

would you change?

I would change how much money I have so I could give

some money to the poor and spend some on myself.

If you could go back in your past and change some-

thing, would you? If so, what would you change? If

not, why not?

I would change never moving to Mandan because most

of the people there are rude and mean. I have way more

friends here than I did there.

If you could push a RESTART button to restart your

life over, would you? If so, why? If not, why not?

No, because I like myself the way I am. I like the way I

live and wouldn’t change it for the world.

Are you a Facebook expert? Here are 20 facts you may not have known about the famed Facebook.

Facebook has over 350 million active users. More than 35 million users update their status each day, with more than 55 million status updates each day. More than 2.5 billion pictures are uploaded to Facebook each month. The average Facebook user has 130 friends and sends eight friend requests per month. Among children under 18, Facebook was ranked third in the top 100 searches of 2009, behind YouTube and Google.

A recent survey of 500 top colleges found that 10% of admission’s officers acknowledged looking at social networking sites such as Facebook to evaluate applicants. Thirty-eight percent of admission’s officers said that what they saw negatively affected the applicant.

Facebook is not only beating MySpace traffic, but it is also the second-ranked site overall in the U.S. behind Google. Americans spend 13.9 billion minutes a year on Facebook and five billion minutes on MySpace.

In 2003, Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg created Facemash, where he placed photos of undergradu-ates side by side so viewers could rank which one was “hotter.” Zuckerberg would later turn Facemash into the now ubiquitous Facebook.

Beacon, part of Facebook’s controversial advertisement system that broadcasted information about a user’s shopping activity on other sites, was the target of a class action lawsuit in 2009. The resulting settlement required Facebook to pay $9.5 million into a settlement fund.

If Facebook were a country, it would be the fifth-largest country in the world, after China, India, the U.S., and Indonesia.

The New Oxford Dictionary announced that the 2009 Word of the Year was “unfriend,” as in “to re-move someone as a friend on a social networking site” such as Facebook. However, there is some debate whether the word should be “defriend” rather than “unfriend.”

While stressing that correlation does not equal causation, a recent poll suggested that Facebook users have lower overall grades than non-users. While initially created for college students, Facebook users over the age 26 now represent 60% of the total U.S. Facebook population. The average Facebook users spend more than 55 minutes a day on the site. They use the Like button nine times a month and write 25 comments each month. Approximately 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States.

Forbes dubbed 25-year-old Mark Zuckerberg, the creator/owner of Facebook, as the world’s youngest billionaire, worth 1.5 billion. Syria, China, Vietnam, and Iran have banned Facebook. In December 2009, there were over 250 million active users on Facebook, up from 1 million active users in December 2004.Tim Spara-pani, director of public policy at Facebook, stated that hundreds of millions of people had never stopped and thought about the consequences of sharing information online.

In January 2009, an advertising campaign from Burger King titled “WHOPPER Sacrifice” rewarded Face-book users a free “Angry Whopper” for publicly deleting 10 friends, who would then receive a blunt message informing they were deleted for a free hamburger.

Book Review: Inheritance Series by Christopher Paolini

In this series, a young boy named Eragon finds a strange blue rock in a

mountain range called the Spine. When Eragon was born, his mother named

him after the first Dragon Rider. The people in his village, Carvahall, think that

the Spine is full of evil things and huge monsters, so they think he should get

rid of the rock. Eragon lives with Garrow, his uncle, and Roran, his cousin. Er-

agon keeps the rock and one night, he discovers that the rock was a dragon egg.

That draws the Empire’s evil assistants, the Ra’zac, ugly, strange creatures, out

to make Eragon join the Empire. When the Ra’zac couldn’t find Eragon, they

destroyed his home with Roran and Garrow, and sadly, Garrow died because of

this. An old storyteller named Brom helps Eragon escape the clutches of the

Ra’zac, but he wouldn’t let Eragon go so easily. Brom said that Eragon had to

allow Brom to travel with him, train Eragon to do magic, read, and learn new

battle tactics.

Eragon asks Brom what he should name his blue female dragon, and

Brom lists a few names. Eragon and his dragon fancied the name Saphira. Er-

agon and Saphira can communicate with pictures and words, but they do not

speak aloud, they speak through each other’s minds. As Brom, Eragon, and

Saphira travel, Saphira gets larger and Eragon gets smarter and stronger. Brom

and Eragon find an elf that is being beaten by a Shade and his soldiers. A Shade

is a person infected with evil spirits and is nearly impossible to destroy. Eragon,

Brom and Saphira save the elf and discover who she really is…

Parental Guidance

This movie is a family friendly movie and is mostly funny. The

story is about when grandparents come to babysit for a week and find

out they are the OTHER grandparents. They work their hardest to

make an impact on their 3 grandchildren’s lives. The characters have

their ups and downs, which strengthens the bond of their relation-

ship.

I give this movie 4 and ½ stars by Macy Mack
