ProfileWaiting outside a Headteacher’s studycan bring back painful memories. Not soat Hadley Wood’s Primary School.Meeting Mrs Loizides was as usual awelcoming and friendly experiencethough a little sad. Unbelievablyretirement beckons. I asked her if shewould not mind mentioning some pasthistory. Born and bred in Camden Townof Greek Cypriot parents she attended AllSouls School in Foley St behind TheMiddlesex Hospital. ‘Any specialmemories’ I ask. ‘Well I was May Queenin 1962, voted in by the other children’she replies with a smile. ‘Actually I was abit shy. But I loved drama and sport’. Shecame 6th in a London Schools event andas a result was chosen to run in the firstever girls National Cross Countrycompetition for girls in RochdaleLancashire. (Rochdale? Was it raining I

wondered. Alwaysused to be.) ‘Actually’she replies, ‘It was!’Then to the Central

Foundation Girl’sSchool in the City andthen on to TeachersTraining at St Gabriel’snow amalgamated withLondon University’sGoldsmith’s College. ‘Iwanted to be a teacherfrom about the age ofeight’. Then teachingpractice in Camberwelland by way of contrasta spell in a small villageschool in Suffolk.

Louiza started teaching at a school inHackney, then married and later took abreak to bring up their two sons. Oncethe boys started school it was back toteaching part time in Haringey and laterfull time at Oakthorpe Infants School,which amalgamated with the JuniorSchool to become a Primary. In all Louizawas there for 17 years taking onresponsibility for Maths and ICT. Sheloved working with other teachers andsharing knowledge and practice. Shewas a leading teacher in Maths andmodelled lessons to teachers from otherschools as well as working one year withthe Local Authority Mathematics Teamdelivering maths training sessions toother teachers. It was at Oakthorpe thatshe gained her knowledge and skills insenior management. She was able to usethese skills as part of a team thatsupported a nearby failing school inSpecial Measures. Listening to her you

cannot help noticing her calm andunderstanding manner. It’s easy to seewhy she was so good at liaison andcoping with the diplomatic difficulties ofgoing to work at a failing school.Aged forty four, Louiza decided to

study for an MA in Education at Hertford,attending the University for two nights aweek over four years. ‘I was lucky to havesuch a supportive family otherwise itwould have been too difficult’ she says.‘But I loved the course and the reading. Itwas such a stimulus’. Following herdegree she moved to Latymer All SaintsPrimary school in Edmonton as AssistantHead Teacher and then DeputyHeadteacher. This was another failing or‘Special Measures’ school. Louizaworked closely with the newly formedsenior management and within sixmonths the school was out of specialmeasures. Within two years she appliedand was thrilled to be given the Headshipat Hadley Wood Primary. ‘I liked the sizeof the school (245 children at that time),and the culture of high quality teaching’.She also liked the community

atmosphere and the international feel ofthe school. Louiza mentioned theimportance of teaching children aboutdifferent cultures, religions and beliefs sothat through this knowledge childrenhave understanding, tolerance andrespect for others.I asked her what was she most proud

of. ‘Hmm’ a pause. ‘Lots of things. Ourpartnership with families has been verysuccessful. There’s a lot of interactionwith parents and we work in partnershipwith them. What else? ‘I think we have avery good teaching programme. Theimportance of the three R’s isfundamental but we give the children avery rich and broad curriculum. We havebeen very successful in the way wedeliver our Creative Curriculum. I musthave looked puzzled. ‘We ask the classto vote for a topic and then teach about it.For example chocolate has been afavourite topic this year. So we taught thechildren about the processes of meltingand solidifying, visited Cadbury’s factory,reading Charlie and the Chocolatefactory, making different flavouredchocolate ourselves etc etc. The childrenlove this approach and it is very effective’.What about special awards? ‘Well

probably our best moment was beingjudged as an ‘Outstanding’ School byOfsted in 2008. This was based on aninspection, a review of the children’sresults, observing the teachers at work,talking to the children, staff and parents.’‘Stressful’ I asked. Louiza smiled. ‘Wellyou never know what the children aregoing to say at any one moment but they

were all so proud of the school we neednot have worried.’They have also won several other

awards: Healthy schools Award, LeadingParent Partnership Award, Basic QualityMark, the NACE Award, and we arecurrently working towards outInternational Award. There is also theSing up Gold Award. Music is a strongprovision at the school and about 80children are currently learning to playinstruments. There is a choir and anorchestra and concerts are held every

term. The school has a music specialist,Mrs Haines. The school also received anActive award for sport. The children playRounders, netball, football, handball,tennis, gymnastics and athletics andhave an annual sports day. ‘I thoughtsport was not a priority in schoolsanymore’ I ask. She shakes her head andleans forward.’ We feel strongly that thechildren should be good sports peopleand especially be able to win or losegracefully. We make a point ofacknowledging and valuing all thechildren whether they are winners or not’.Louiza goes on to talk about the

children. She’s obviously very proud ofthem and of the school. ‘How does it feel’I ask ‘to be on the verge of retirement’?‘Well, I do have mixed emotions’ she

replies ‘I really love this job and quite

frankly it’s been an honour to be incharge of such an excellent group ofteachers and children. But I am not surehow I feel. It will probably come home tome when I have actually finished’.I get up and make my apologies for

Ami Steps Out ForCharityTen year old Ami Northam, grand-daughter of Gill Gutteridge and John & JillNortham, has recently completed amarathon 20 mile walk to raise money forschool children of her own age in Africa.Ami has had a long held ambition to

enhance the lives of children in Africa andcame up with the idea of undertaking asponsored walk. She selected awonderful charity called ‘Wherever the

Need’ who will use the funds raised toequip a newly built primary school inSierra-Leone, a country where many ofthe schools were destroyed by the 10year civil war.After a few months of training, Ami set

out with her dad, Chris, at 5.30 a.m. on afine morning in early June. The targetwas to walk from Ami’s School, MonkenHadley, to St Paul’s Cathedral, trying tostay off-road as much as possible. Theirwalk took them across Hadley Commonwhere they linked up with the Dollis ValleyGreenwalk which leads all the way to thehousing maze of Hampstead GardenSuburb. A chance encounter with theprevious owner of Ami’s home in Barnethelped set them back on track towardsHampstead Heath.Once off the Heath, they walked over

Primrose Hill and then into Regents Park,at which point the heavens opened.Undeterred, the duo made a quick visitto Sherlock Holmes’ House on BakerStreet and then carried on to Marble

Arch, Speaker’s Corner (where Amiextended her vocabulary!), BuckinghamPalace and in to Green Park and StJames’s Park. They hobbled past BigBen and the Houses of Parliament,across Westminster Bridge (bypassing aman carrying a snake !) and then took inthe London Eye and The Tate Gallery onthe South Bank. The famous dome of StPaul’s Cathedral was a sight for soreeyes (and very sore feet!) but a finalsprint up the steps saw them completethe task by about 2 p.m. The totaldistance walked was just over 20 mileswhich entailed taking an impressive49,306 steps !While somewhat bedraggled and very

wet, Ami felt a deep sense of satisfactionin successfully completing a challengingtask and, most importantly, had raisedmoney to fund much needed equipmentfor children far less privileged thanherself.Fundraising is still ongoing – thanks to

Centenary Summer TeaSt Paul’s continues to celebrate itsCentenary year; this time with a delicioussummer tea attended by forty localresidents. The pews were all pushedback, tables with attractive tableclothswere brought in and whilst guestswatched a DVD of past church fetes andthe centenary week-end celebrations, asuperb home-made tea was served.Jeff Hammer, who trained as a classical

pianist before moving into the world ofprofessional music where he worked withmany top artists, played some nostalgicmusic from the shows.Photographs of the past era were on

Letter from WestminsterOne of the things I enjoy about being anMP is the variety. Last month for exampleI was campaigning against theplans to develop a huge wastemanagement site at PinkhamWay on the A406. I also visitedthe new properties along theA406 which are now largely freeof squatters and squalor andbeing redeveloped. Theregeneration of this area will begreatly helped by better

accommodation and also a betterenvironment. The new families soon tomove in to the area will want not justquality housing but quality air. Hundredsof waste trucks from seven North LondonBoroughs and Barnet Council's depotdriving along the A406 are not what thesenew residents will have bargained for.During the same week in Parliament I

took up the case of a long standingresident of the same area, GaryMckinnon, the computer hacker who isfacing extradition to the US and has

Aspergers Syndrome. I waspleased that Gary's case wasthe subject of discussionsbetween President Obamaand the Prime Minister and willcontinue to press for Gary tostay in the UK.Some things though are

complaining about too few good schoolplaces being available for their children.There are areas in N14 and N21 whichhave unfortunately become 'black holes'for school admissions, where thedistance from the nearest local schoolsmean that obtaining a first preferenceschool is unlikely.One answer is to increase the supply of

school places. That is why I amsupporting two applications by localparents teachers and businessmenfor new ‘free’ primary and secondaryschools in or near to PalmersGreen. Given that Editors should never mention their own families we had somemisgivings about including this article. Nevertheless it was rather a special eventand we hope you will forgive us. The grandchildren came over from Norway lastweek. Our elder son took the girls and their mother to the Black Eyed Peasconcert in Hyde Park. By a lucky chance they were in the VIP section and not farfrom Prince Harry.At some stage Harry noticed Mia could not see over the heads of the surroundingadults and asked her if she would like to sit on his shoulders. ‘Er yes’ said Mia,practically passing out. ‘If you fall off’said the Prince ‘Its not my fault. Are wecool?’ ‘Are we cool’ thought Mia sittingthere in a daze for two songs. ‘We sureare’!We all asked what he was like. ‘ He wasreally nice’ said Mia ‘Very friendly’. Bridge beginners class.Eighteen weeks after starting in Februarythe beginners bridge players had theirfirst taste of a bridge competition. Elevenmembers of the Hadley Wood Bridgeclub kindly volunteered to partner eachbeginner on the final night at St Paul'sChurch Hall. The competition was fierceover 12 boards and it was soon realisedthat some of the experts expected a littletoo much from their new partners. Somereally difficult contracts were declared
