BRIEF HISTORY OF CLUB

The Hadfield Community Youth Club was formed in 1961. The club was based at Reddish Reserve and had

a tin shed and a tent as its social and changing rooms. Games were also played at North Park Primary School

and Hadfield High School with the players changing into their football gear over the road in South Street in

Roy McKerchar’s garage. Later in the same year the players got changed in a tent erected at the High school

as it was considered too dangerous for the kids to cross the road in their footy boots.

The club won its first flag in 1968 in a lightning premiership competition held for under 11’s in Craigieburn.

The youth club formed the Hadfield Football Club in 1971 and changed its jumper from green and gold to

the Hawthorn club jumper.

The newly formed Hadfield Football Club held their inaugural meeting on Tuesday 10th November 1970 at

Reddish Reserve. It was attended by Councillors F.Mott, A.Evans, D.Allen and 50 enthusiastic supporters.

The meeting chaired by Cr. Mott accepted in principle the constitution presented by a sub-committee. The

following members were elected to office:

President: Mr N. Fox.

Vice President: Mr A. Kennedy

Secretary: Mr L. Coventry

Assistant Secretary: Mr M. Owen

Treasurer: Mr J. Walker

Committee members: R. Brown, F. Bellinger, K. Dempsey, R. Glenn, K. Hayes, B. Withington and R. Waugh.

6

Councillors Mott, Evans and Allen spoke in support of the new club and wished the football club success in

the future.

At the beginning of 1971 the committee called a meeting of interested ladies with the view of forming the

ladies auxiliary to assist with the running of the football club and fundraising.

This was how the canteen was formed. The first canteen was in a tent on the left hand side of the change

rooms. This lasted only 2 weeks as there was a real health hazard with electric cords etc running

everywhere.

The next canteen position was a framed tent outside the club rooms with the cords running into the club

rooms for power. The council did some alterations so an umpire’s room could be established. The

committee split this room in half to house the canteen, the only problem it faced north so all the cold winds

blew through.

When the bar was built the committee put a window at the side so the football could be viewed. A lot of

money was raised in the early days thanks to the proceeds from the canteen and bar a lot of equipment

including medicine balls and tumbling mats were purchased for the boys to train in doors when it rained.

The first Honour Board was also purchased by the ladies auxiliary and is still in the current rooms.

Many of the ladies still today have great memories of these days long gone and lifelong friendships were

made and are still evident today.

With the move to Martin reserve and the forming of the Sporting Club, the ladies auxiliary was

unfortunately discarded however their efforts and hard work are still evident today. Joy Walker was a

driving force behind the ladies auxiliary her work and that of all the ladies who dedicated their time and

efforts should never be forgotten.

The same year the club won the first of its three open age premierships (C grade) under the astute coaching

of Max Paynting after going into the Grand Final as huge underdogs they prevailed over a talented West

Coburg team. The under 11 team coached by Neville Fox also that same year won the new club its first ever

junior flag.

Page 7: Hadfield Football Club Football Club.pdfas it was considered too dangerous for the kids to cross the road in their footy boots. The club won its first flag in 1968 in a lightning premiership

7

The club played its home games at the tiny Reddish Reserve behind the East Street shops up until the end

of the 1987 season. The club then moved its home games up to the bigger Martin Reserve where the change

rooms were built and opened in June of 87. The football club was still using the social rooms at Reddish

reserve. The social rooms were a great place for the members to congregate many functions were held in

the rooms over the years, how could we ever forget the great Haddy disco’s with DJ. Neville Scetrini. The

time keeper’s box extension was added to the front of the social rooms and named after long time

committee member John Walker. The time keeper’s box at Martin reserve is also now named after John.

In June 1995 the club opened its new social rooms. Special mention goes to Bill Armstead for his tireless

work behind the scenes to get the project up and running and Peter Whittle, for his time and effort to build

the rooms with the help of the numerous volunteers including Max and Steve Paynting, Mario Todorov and

David Cann all helped to work on the project which were built with funds and contributions from the

supportive members and community and the Ros Kelly Government Grant at the time nick named as the

sports rorts minister.

The pavilion was named after life members Ken and Marilyn Don (Don Pavilion). They were both tireless

workers at the club and both passed away within a week of one another in 1992. The eldest of their three

sons, Robert at 24 was to become the youngest president of the club in 1995, succeeding Bob Layton.

The Hadfield Sporting Club was formed in1996 with the club expanding from football and cricket to include

netball and darts. Bill Armstead became President of the Sporting Club a position he held for two years

before handing the reins over to Graeme Don in 98. Steven Gumley became President in 99 with Peter

Gleisner taking over from 2000 to 2005 with current day Sporting club President Paul Golding taking on the

job in 2006.

8

Throughout the 70’s Hadfield was a power in B Grade having played in 4 Grand Finals 75, 77, 78 and 79.In

75 Dale Sanders coached the team going down by 5 points to Moonee Valley in a see-sawing contest

decided by a dubious 15 yard penalty paid to the Valley full forward (Tom Fitzpatrick) by umpire and

Hadfield nemesis Alan Dell after he missed the goal and hit the post. The Hadfield full back’s crime was that

he patted the head of Fitzpatrick after he hit the post. It must be noted in the early part of this decade the

players under the captaincy of Kevin Carton went on strike in protest against the then committee decision

to suspend Arthur Cann from the club. The strike went for one week and the game against Brunswick City

was forfeited. In 1977 under Russ Nilsson we went down by 2 points to Ascot Vale led by the McLean clan

with ex AFL/VFL legend Ricky McLean running foul of the umpires being reported no less than 5 times for a

total of eight weeks suspension. The year prior to the 77 finals saw the reserves first semi-final against

Brunswick City (1976) at Canning Street Reserve called off at half time as a section of the ground had

collapsed near the Centre Half Forward position towards the clubrooms. The officials tried to continue the

game after half time by placing witches hats around the 10metre in diameter hole, but it was deemed too

dangerous as no one could see the bottom. Ironically the following week the game was rescheduled at

(Sewell reserve) Glenroy, with Hadfield winning by 2 goals the margin at half time the previous week.

In 1978 the 13th May, round 5 game against Moonee Valley at Reddish reserve was cancelled as the ground

had been recently topped dressed and with torrential rain conspiring to leave the ground unfit for football.

The Council once again was the culprit leaving tractor and truck tyre craters across the ground. The

committee with shovels and picks tried to reduce the carnage however ran out of time. This game was to

be former player and 1972 Best & Fairest winner Wally Colauti’s 100th game after a vote was taken by the

senior players to allow him to play the one game he needed to get to 100. Wally was down from Queensland

for the week-end after moving up there a couple of years earlier. In 1978 the seniors were to go on and

play in another Grand Final under Russ Nilsson on the back of a Ross Cotter mark and 15 yard penalty

resulting in a goal against East Keilor after the siren in the second semi-final a fortnight earlier.

Unfortunately East Keilor won the big one by 41 points at Windy Hill with Hadfield unable to recover from

the loss of star player Ron Thorsen dropped from the side the night before the Grand Final as it was

discovered he played with VFA club Brunswick the week between the semi and Grand Final. 1979 finally

saw a breakthrough for premiership glory against Strathmore, Alan Dalton was at the helm but he was

severely injured in the first quarter which meant we were a player down for most of the day. Somehow the

team got up over Strathmore by 2 points after finding themselves nearly 5 goals down at three quarter

time.

Later on in the same year there was a proposed merger discussion between the Hadfield and Glenroy

Football Clubs but the merger failed to materialise after a heated and somewhat confrontational public

meeting of members of the two clubs at the Broadmeadows Town Hall.

Throughout the mid-eighties the open age played in the A Grade competition with mixed success. At the

end of the 1986 season we were relegated to B Grade. In 1988, there was heart break again with a loss to

Pascoe Vale in the GF, before redemption the following year against Keilor Park. In the same year the

reserves coached by Peter Guest after Ray Cheeseman moved to Queensland, won their first Premiership.

The 1989 season saw the Peter Whittle coached team always in control and went on to record a comfortable

victory to put us back up in A Grade and the clubs third senior Premiership. Throughout the early 90’s we

held our own and in 1994 under Steve Gumley and Darren Ogier we narrowly missed playing in the finals

after succumbing to a spate of injuries to key players. The reserves were to go on and play off in a Grand

Page 9: Hadfield Football Club Football Club.pdfas it was considered too dangerous for the kids to cross the road in their footy boots. The club won its first flag in 1968 in a lightning premiership

9

Finale the same year only to lose to underdog Oak Park. In 95 the reserves made the A Grade Finals for only

the third time in the clubs history. At the end of the 96 season we were relegated to B Grade even after

performing well and being competitive in a number of games including a win over Strathmore later in the

year to retain the Don Trophy.

The senior team was to go on and play in two more Grand Finals in 1997 and 1999 unfortunately going

down in both games to Glenroy and Moonee Valley respectively. In 1997 under Ken Ingram the team won

14 games in a row only to lose to a well drilled and well coached Glenroy team. In 98 we lost the Preliminary

final to Tullamarine by 1 point. 1999 saw Hadfield as the underdogs and although as valiantly as we tried,

could not match Moonee Valley for the full four quarters.

From 2001 to 2005 the open-age struggled to win games and became cellar dwellers but there was always

light at the end of the tunnel. The juniors were the backbone of the club eventually having two teams in

each age group. From 2003 nine junior flags have been won and we are without doubt the strongest junior

club in the area at this point in time. Credit must go to the committee that had the foresight and vision to

see and plan ahead. Fortunately most of these people are still working hard at the club today. Worth noting

is the amount of junior players attending senior matches these days. The rapport amongst the juniors and

seniors is something quite special. You only need to see the boys lined up behind the fence near the goals

in the last quarter when kicking towards the social rooms.

At the end of the nineties decade, several parents with careful planning and foresight with Wayne Gillis the

new junior co-ordinator entered two under 10 teams into the competition. With numbers low for the first

half of the year word soon got around come to Hadfield and play a game of football. Later in the year the

numbers began to swell to two full teams in the under 10 divisions. The club is now seeing the fruits of its

hard labour by having two under 18 teams entered for the competition in 2009. Each age group has

currently two teams playing in the E.D.F.L competition with our juniors the envy of many clubs in the area.

In 2000 the women’s football team was formed and had almost immediate success winning the flag in 2001

under the coaching of former senior coach and player Steven Gumley. In 2007 the women won their second

flag, unfortunately this was to be their last year as it was decided by the women not to enter the

competition in 2008.

Season 2008 saw Hadfield have its most productive season since the new millennium winning 11 games

missing out on finals by percentage.

Season 2009 turned out to be a slightly disappointing year for the seniors winning only 9 games, eight under

18’s were given the opportunity to play in the seniors throughout the year with all boys holding their own

and showing this is the way for the future. The reserves winning 10 and the under 18’s finishing on top

losing just the one game. Unfortunately the under 18’s lost the Grand Final going down to the team they

thrashed three times during the year Taylors Lakes. The second under 18 team started up and had moderate

success although there were only 4 teams in the competition we were competitive finishing third. Season

2010 should see the club field two under 18 teams again, hopefully most of the under 16 players will

continue on at the club and bolster the numbers again next year. During the year Bill English passed away.

Bill was one of the first junior football coaches at the club nurturing the under 11’s in the 60’s.Bill was also

a life member of the cricket club and a very passionate supporter of both the cricket and football teams.

Page 10: Hadfield Football Club Football Club.pdfas it was considered too dangerous for the kids to cross the road in their footy boots. The club won its first flag in 1968 in a lightning premiership

10

The year was a good one for the juniors as every team made the finals for the first time in the clubs history,

four teams went on to win premierships both under 14 teams and both under 16 teams a mighty effort by

all concerned. The under 10 team lost in the last two minutes by a solitary point however the future looks

promising with a number of boys displaying excellent skills already. On a sad note everyone at the club was

devastated at the sudden passing of our dear friend, family man and committee person Les Moore. Les was

a great supporter of the club, a great father to Callum and Andrew and loving husband to Noelene. Les was

the most passionate football supporter I ever had the privilege to meet in my 44 years of football. Callum

went on to win a premiership in the under 14 Division 5 section, his third at the club at such a young age.

On Presentation night Jake Polizzi was awarded the Les Moore Memorial Rookie of the Year Award. The

trophy was presented by Les’ wife Noelene who said Jake was a more than worthy winner and her husband

would be both embarrassed and proud to have the trophy named after him. The end of the season saw the

council install two huge towers with lights on the southern side of the ground after much lobbying from the

Sporting club and football club presidents. Pre-season 2010 saw many senior players leave the club chasing

riches from other clubs as they were not interested in playing for incentive based payments which were

quite rewarding. The loyal players that stayed saw the advantage of this decision with many junior boys

rising to the ranks of senior players and sharing in the financial spoils on offer. The club recruited well also

with several A grade players added to the lists and a few from the country joining as well. The under 16

teams and under 18 teams all had success the under 16 Div 2 team runner up and the under 18C grade also

runner up the under 18 B grade team finished on top and won the Premiership by 16 points after the match

Captain Jayke Gillis dedicated their victory to coach Claude Inturrisi’s dad and long-time life member Joy

Walker. The seniors made the finals for the first time in 11 years unfortunately losing the first semi-final,

however there were 10 players in the team 21 years of age or under. On a sad note the club received news

of the passing of former President and Life member Bob Layton. His funeral was well attended by past and

present members of the Hadfield Football Club which showed how popular Bob was in his time at the club.

On November 24th 2010 founding committee member Mrs Joy Walker passed away after long illness. Joy

was very much loved at the club and well respected, Joy was held in the highest esteem by all generations.

Her tireless work particularly in our foundation years and her volunteer work with the EDFL over the many

years must never be forgotten. Joy was the heart of our football club, a life member and a beautiful person.

Joy will be remembered for ever at the Hadfield Football Club. Joy was posthumously awarded life

membership of the EDFL several days after her passing. During the 2011 season the committee decided to

honour Joy’s name by naming a new shield/trophy after her. This award will be won each year by a club

member who best demonstrates all the values, work ethic and loyality that Joy brought to the football club.

On presentation night the Joy Walker award was won by Brenda Cooper a more than worthy recipient of

this prestigious award. Season 2011 saw the juniors have a successful year winning a further three

Premierships and promoted to Division 1.The under 18’s made the finals for the fourth year in a row

unfortunately going down to West Coburg in the Grand Final at Windy Hill. Former player Barry (Moose)

English son of Bill (dec) passed away suddenly in November. Barry started at the club in the 60’s and was a

prominent member of the successful 79 Senior flag. Big Moose was a likeable guy who gave his best for

both the football and cricket clubs.

THREE GENERATIONS OF PLAYERS

Currently there are only two sets of families known to have played in three generations of football at the

Hadfield Football Club:

Ray Featherstone Ron Waugh

Jason Featherstone Robert Waugh

Jay Featherstone Lucas Waugh

About Hadfield: The suburb of Hadfield is located between Fawkner and Glenroy. Settlement in the

area began around the mid to late 50’s, there were no schools, shops or made roads and just several houses

in the area. Currently less than half of the population speak English at home. The population of Hadfield in

2008 is about 5000. There are two primary schools within Hadfield, Saint Thomas More and Bell Vue Park

formerly Gowrie Park. These two schools have been excellent recruiting grounds for our junior teams as

many of the boys have gone on to become great servants of the Hadfield Football Club. In later years several

schools in the Fawkner area have also contributed to bringing young boys and girls to the club.

Back in the nineties the Kennett Government in their wisdom decided to close many of the schools

particularly in the Northern suburbs, this resulted in the closure of the Hadfield High School and Hadfield

State School formerly North Park. This in turn saw the number of junior players at Hadfield drop remarkably

in this era particularly boys in the 15-18 year age group.

CLUB SONG

We’re a happy team at Hadfield

We're the Mighty Fighting Hawks

We love our Club, and we play to win,

Riding the bumps with a grin (at Hadfield)

Come what may, you'll find us striving

Team work is the thing that counts

One for all and all for one

Is the way we play at Hadfield

We are the Mighty Fighting Hawks

To the tune: (Yankee Doodle Dandy)
