MethodologyFor six weeks, the BYOP scientists followed different diets and skin treatments to affect their gut and skin microbiota. After the six weeks period, they collected their biosamples (poop and facial skin) and analyzed the biological materials by using the custom-made SmartShit™ and Skinalyzza™ technology.

The scientists also conducted an extensive tasting probe to identify their individual taste preferences of different foods and beverages.

Based on the research outcomes (poop and skin test results compared with different taste preferences) they prototyped three skin and gut microbiota profiles that show the possible impacts of various diets and skin treatments on human health.

The BYOP LAB audience is invited to provide their own biological sample to be analyzed right on the spot. The results are compared with the microbiota profiles developed within the BYOP research.

Scientist #1: Dusjagr Male, 40-ish, living in cold Swiss mountain wilderness and everywhere else Diet: loads of cheese, some burgers recently, overall very rich on coconuts Skin: never used sunscreen in his entire life; likes to get exposed to sun very often

Scientist #2: I-Chern Female, 30-ish, Asian living in humid tropical island Diet: eating both meat and vegetable, very rich on corn, drinks horse milk for breakfast Skin: doesn’t use any detergents (soap, shampoo) to clean her surface

Scientist #3: Materie Female, 30-ish, Slavic origin Diet: rich in fermented foods and beverages, way too much carrot in diet Skin: has a pink tattoo shaped as a sauce and various shapes of non-tattooed red eczema

Type #1: Coconoteroides (Dusjagr) typical for high protein and coconut fat diet Recommended food: Raw beef (Yukhoe), Banana Mat Milk, Beef jerky, Coconut Avoid (or eat if you want to tweak your guts): Kimchi, Magkeolli, Canned Corn

Type #2: UniCornoccus (I-Chern) typical for cornucopia of simple horse protein diet Recommended food: Ganjang-gejang, Peanut butter, Canned Corn, Mayuju, Doenjang Avoid (or eat if you want to tweak your guts): Soju, Raw beef (Yukhoe), Banana Mat Milk

Type #3: Carrotella (Materie) typical for diet high on fiber and carrotohydrates Recommended food: Kimchi, Magkeolli, Carrot in any form, Soju, Jangajji Avoid (or eat if you want to tweak your guts): Seasoned baby crab, Beef jerky

Hackteria BYOP LABThe BYOP lab serves as a platform to address biopolitical issues around the current advancement of DTC (Direct to Consumer) genomic and microbiomic services*, and the rising popularity of online health data sharing.

The health data sharing practices are often seen as a way to improve individuals' personal health and self-awareness, and an important leap towards the democratization of expert health knowledge and advancement of citizen science.

At the same time, the volume of personal health data and medical records made available through the data sharing services raises some important questions about data ownership and privacy.

It remains rather unclear who really “owns” most of the health data shared online: Is it the biological “creator” of this data, the providers of data sharing services, the healthcare authorities?

Rather than delivering any solutions or answers to these questions, the BYOP LAB scientists shamelessly steal personal biological data of all the lab's visitors and store them in the private BYOP archive. Personal profile of each visitor is available in the PooperLeaks database that can be accessed by anyone. Along with the BYOP motto: "We don't give a shit about your privacy. Business as usual.", we recommend all the deceived visitors to think and act.
