We live in a time of great abundance and unparalleled possibilities fueled by
exponential growth from the impact of technology. Our job at sparks & honey is to
understand the accelerators, balancers and patterns that are driving exponential cultural
change in the near term and foreseeable future. Our team of cultural strategists and
curators works with leading brands and thought leaders to apply these trends and use them
as a catalyst for disruptive innovation.
We eat culture for breakfast in order to understand the value of emerging fringe signals,
cultural shifts and explosive doubling patterns. While monitoring thousands of inputs
and mapping and scoring them, we have identified 8 rapidly accelerating trends that will
shape institutions, governments, businesses and everyday consumers.
We have consolidated these trends into short vignettes in order to share a curated snapshot
of what will create either great opportunities or unexpected challenges. We will cover
these trends over the next two months. This report covers Citizen Doctor. We hope you
engage us in the debate and exploration on how these exponential trends will shape your
business and the World.
Please enjoy and share this third of eight free reports. The discussion will also continue in
our core social channels - @sparksandhoney, www.bigthink/blogs/amped and
www.facebook.com/sparksandhoney.
Our blind spot comes from the fact that we have lived in a linear world.

1. Century of City States
2. Future of Education
Healthcare is no longer the domain of specialists. With the rise of digital health, - a move from writing scripts to prescribing apps and sensors, growing numbers of people are taking their health into their own hands.
Since the tools and quantified data for healthy living are in everyone’s hands, citizen doctors are tracking their health in real time and heading off problems before they occur.
The future of medicine is predictive, personalized, preventative and is moving from being episodic and reactive to continuous and proactive.
The Rise of the Citizen Doctor
Real Life Tricorders: Smartphone apps and health tracking wearables currently offer a good degree of health analysis, but recent efforts from Scanadu and the Qualcomm X prize are aiming to create digital tools that can fully diagnose any health issue by leveraging advanced computational power and cloud computing.

3-D printing is revolutionizing product development
Hospital in Your Pocket: As the computational power of hand held devices accelerate, devices like Mobisante’s portable ultrasound machine add to the sophistication of mobile health.

Embedded Health Tracking: Tiny new chips packed with sensors can be implanted and used to monitor patient's blood levels. This health data is then wirelessly transmitted to doctors or to user’s own devices.

Personalized Health Care: Advancements in human genome mapping will make understanding your unique genetic composition an affordable reality. Healthcare through personalized microbial balancing will soon become a viable medical treatment as well. These advancement in conjunction with an abundance of “big data” medical records will come together to form highly customizable individual health plans.

Electronic Tattoos: A new class of skin-integrated devices can measure things like skin hydration, temperature and electric signals from brain and muscle activity.

Better Health For The Bottom Billion: Mobile, personalized healthcare is also bringing previously inaccessible services to developing countries. The “Bottom Billion” is now getting access to healthcare that does not rely on existing systems.

Switch Roles: Make the Consumer the Expert: As the tools to diagnose and track health become cheaper and easier to use (think: WebMD), empowered consumers will take over the role of doctor for much of the healthcare process. There will be a reversal, where consumer will be the expert, and the doctor will assume the role of the advisor. This will allow doctors to take on more patients (and virtual patients), which will put pressure on medical facilities to restructure. Likewise, brands must embrace the fact that consumers are the “experts” and the brand also fills an advisory role.
Adopt an Uber-Individualized “Precision” Approach: Consumers are demanding increasingly more precise, tailored and personalized healthcare solutions. Detailed consumer data, human genome mapping, microbe mapping and advances in biology and technology are enabling this. Anticipate a shift in language in the health industry - as well as consumer marketing - from “personal” to “precision.”
Consumers Will Expect Intuitive and Proactive Healthcare Programs: Flipping the traditional “episodic and reactive” mindset of healthcare on its head, continuously quantified and tracked health makes health and wellness something to nurture and maintain rather than responding to crisis (think: body as “tree” vs. body as “car”). Marketers will also be challenged to be pro-active, predictive and intuitive. There is an entrepreneurial opportunity to innovate and apply within the apps and sensors space. Additionally, we can expect the cost of managed health care to decrease,

Data-Driven DoctorHealthcare practitioners in the near future also need to be specialists in data analytics, and even data visualization to communicate with patients. Expect an industry of consultants to emerge who will train HCPs and offer out-sourced data interpretation, visualization and personalized action plans.

Big Data Can Help Save Billions in Health Care Costs
At sparks & honey we track and analyze thousands of cultural data sources in real time, incorporating live data feeds from numerous APIs as well as hundreds of offline sources. Using a proprietary Culture Mapping Platform, we monitor cultural bursts, identify clusters of activity and trends, score their energy levels, project their lifespans and analyze their cultural resonance. This intelligence helps brands understand and connect with popular culture in order to make more strategically informed business decisions.
Our platform incorporates three different frameworks to structure and contextualize raw data:
