My Takeaway, My Choice! A little update on My Choice – A simple way to choose a better balance at our local takeaways.

Back in 2010, EcoLocal asked Hackbridge residents how they could be helped to make healthier choices.

Local people said that when it came to food, they wanted to find it easier to make a more balanced choice from the food available locally.

With this in mind, since July, a My Choice menu has been available in five participating Hackbridge takeaways which have highlighted special choices and balanced meals.

Below you can read what each takeaway is still offering to make it easier for you to make a balanced choice when scanning the menu. Reports from residents have been really positive and the logo well recognised. So the next time you visit any of the participating takeaways look out for the My Choice logo and posters to see exactly what they are doing to help you make a balanced choice when ordering.

Remember: My Takeaway, My Choice!

VICAR'S CORNER

Christmas is traditionally the time for giving presents. We buy special presents for our children and smaller ones for their Christmas stockings. We buy presents for our spouse or partner, for our parents, for our grandchildren/grandparents, our brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces, and so the list goes on. We don't want to forget anyone or appear to be mean. No wonder the weeks leading up to Christmas are stressful!

In all the stress and business it is easy to forget that Christmas actually celebrates a different kind of giving entirely. “God so loved the world that he gave” – not a new laptop or latest kitchen gadget but - “his only son, so that whoever puts their trust in him should receive eternal life.” (John 3.16) Christmas celebrates the message that God gave us himself, as a visual aid to show us what he is really like. In Jesus we see that Jesus is on the side of the poor, the hurting, those who have made a mess of their lives. We are given the good news that God is not out to punish us or tell us off, but that he came as a baby simply to share our life and to share his life with us.

The result of that is that we do receive gifts through what happened in Bethlehem and Jerusalem two thousand years ago – gifts of faith, of hope, of love. St Paul wrote, “Strive for the greater gifts, And I will show you a still more excellent way...Now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.” (1 Corinthians 12,13) In our own strength the best we can often attain is a wistful wish-fulfilment and an attempt to be kind to those who don't rub us up the wrong way. Christmas offers us the opportunity to point our minds in God's direction and ask him to make us the kind of people we (and he) would really like us to be.

And when, in a moment of quiet, we do risk turning our wills and our lives over to the care of God, we find that “hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5.5)

Happy Christmas!
