Spring 2014
Habitat Herald “The Snow Won’t Stop Us”
any people would imagine
that once winter rolls
around with its snow and
freezing temperatures, that
our build volunteers would
take the time to hibernate and
rest up for all of the projects
they know spring will bring;
but not our volunteers!
Our volunteers have been
working throughout the winter
putting together materials in
the basement of the She-
boygan ReStore. From building
partial walls to window
frames, and even using boards
from our “Sign a Board” cam-
paign.
Working alongside our volun-
teers are our current partner
families. They are learning new
construction skills and how to
use various tools. A member of
one of our partner families
said, “It’s fun helping the vol-
unteers build walls that will
support our home, and we
love reading all the inspiration-
al messages people have
written to us on the boards.”
Our partner families are re-
quired to work a certain num-
ber of hours of “sweat equity”
before they can move into
their home (typically 500
hours per family), in addition
to paying back a zero-interest
mortgage.
This year HFHL will be working
on building at least three new
homes, one located on N 31st
St and two on Erie Ave in She-
boygan, as well as completing
smaller rehabilitation projects.

gress of our builds and rehabil-

Letter From Our President: Invest in a Family’s Future
Dear Habitat friends,
Most months I begin my letter with a big
“thanks.” Thanks to all of you for all that you do,
to volunteer, to support us, and to pray for us. But
this month, I need to begin with a big “PLEASE.”
Let me explain:
About a year and a half ago, the City of Sheboygan ap-
proached us with a proposal. They would help us acquire
affordable land in the Gateway neighborhood in down-
town Sheboygan if we would agree to build houses in that
area. It was a “win-win” proposal. The City would get a
greatly improved and attractive neighborhood, and we
would be able to increase our capacity and significantly
help more families. We carefully, thoughtfully, and
prayerfully began the process of planning for this new
growth. After countless hours of planning, we are confi-
dent that we have an excellent strategic plan for this new
initiative. Now comes the “please.” Because we hope to
build houses at a faster rate than we have done in the past,
our own fund development of the past, which relied heavi-
ly on grants and ReStore profits, needs to be enhanced.
That’s where all of you come in. I am asking that you each
dig down into your finances and consider a major gift for
Habitat for Humanity-Lakeside this year. Because we
can cover our small administrative budget from the Re-
Store, and so much of Habitat work is done by volunteers
like me, every dollar that we raise will go into these
homes. From a box of nails, to a pallet of wood, to a door,
a window, a shower enclosure, or a roof, your dollars can
go far to increase the livability and attractiveness of our
city and, even more importantly, can improve a low in-
come family’s quality of life for years to come.
As a teacher, I saw too many students who had to transfer
schools during the school year, which is terribly hard on
achievement. Their families were evicted from an apart-
ment through no fault of their own, because the rent in-
creased too quickly or the landlord had a family member
who needed housing. This kind of housing insecurity is
something that most of us have never experienced and we
may not consider just how much turmoil and stress this
can cause. By contributing to our builds this year and next,
you can help to guarantee the kind of housing security
which most low income families can only dream about.
It’s truly an investment in a family’s future. Think about
the impact you can have. Won’t you consider a gift to us
this year? Whether it’s $25 or $250 or $2500, we’ll take
care to use it well and you can experience the blessing of
truly making a difference in another person’s life.

WANTED: VOLUNTEERS
Thank you to all of our volunteers and their guests who joined us for our Annual
Volunteer Dinner in January. The evening was filled with smiling faces, loving
hearts, laughter and most importantly people who are excited to help us carry out
our mission; helping families afford a safe, decent house to call home!
OUR BUILD TEAM
Welcome our new Con-struction Manager, Don Stenz! Don has lived in the Sheboygan area ever since he was a young boy and loves the area. He and his wife, Kay, have been mar-ried for 40 years and have 4 children and 12 grandchil-dren, whom he enjoys spending time with! He says, “they are so much fun!”
Not only does Don enjoy spending time with his fam-ily, but he also finds joy in working construction. For him, it's incredibly reward-ing to present the final product to clients and now, to partner families. “Seeing their faces light up and ex-citement in their eyes, makes all the hard work and countless hours, worth it! I am excited to work alongside volunteers and partner families to teach them new skills, but also to learn new things from them! It’s a great oppor-tunity for all of us to learn!”

Volunteers come to Habitat for Humanity
for a wide range of reasons, and with all
manner of skills. We are constantly amazed
by the diversity of interests and talents
found in these wonderfully helpful people,
and by their level of commitment, not just
to their specific task, but to the overall Hab-
itat Mission. We run two ReStores, we de-
construct buildings, we conduct rehab pro-
jects, we build new homes, we participate in
events, and our Volunteers understand the
important connection between all of those
seemingly un-related parts of the whole.
They know that helping a family acquire a
new home or refurbish their old one im-
proves their quality of and inspires others
around them; they know that these things
cost money, and that selling and re-selling
resources through the ReStores helps to fill
our coffers for those projects, and allows
people with minimal resources to find af-
fordable materials for making their own
repairs; they know this effort also keeps
these items from burial in a landfill, thereby
contributing to the health of the local envi-
ronment; and they know that getting out in
the community helps us to network and
have fun while doing our most important
work – sharing God’s love through service
to His world.
Please – Become a Habitat for Humanity
Lakeside Volunteer! This year we will be
participating in several events, building
three homes, conducting multiple decon-
structions and multiple rehab projects, and
we always need help in the ReStores. Come,
become a part of OUR community. Call

“Spring is Upon Us”
Spring is busting out all over! These are
optimistic words as I write them on a snowy
day in February, but I know it’s coming.
We are planting seeds and preparing for a
beautiful and busy season ahead. Seeds for
homes are being planted in our basement as
construction volunteers along with the part-
ner family build components. Plans are un-
derway for two more homes as part of the
Gateway project on Erie to begin later in
spring. Upstairs in the ReStore we will soon
have an Assistant ReStore Manager to help
in both Plymouth and Sheboygan. The Re-
Store’s plans for a great Earth Day celebra-
tion and sale are well underway. Mark your
calendar for April 19th! The “A Brush With
Kindness” program is set to expand with a
$7500 grant from the City of Sheboygan.
Our volunteers continue to toil in our
“garden” keeping the administration, Re-
Stores, and building going. The Ozaukee
chapter is working hard to begin construc-
tion of a home in Grafton. Shantytown is
coming to Fountain Park in May. Whew!
This issue is full of the good news of how
dedicated people are putting God’s love
into action. My thanks to all of you who
make this happen. And to those who are
just finding out –come join the fun! Every-
one has something to give whether it is
time, talent, stuff, money, or prayers.

The Ozaukee Chapter has been working really hard the last few months pre-paring for a busy build sea-son starting in spring. They have completed 95% of their 2nd “A Brush with Kindness” project for a two-car garage, and will be fin-ishing siding and roofing as soon as the weather warms up. They are expecting to be finished in time to start the new Grafton project.
The home development for the Grafton Planning Com-mission was reviewed and on February 25th, received approval to proceed with a request for more engineer-ing, storm water manage-ment and architectural changes to the front eleva-tion of the homes. They expect to have most of this information for the Chapter at the March Planning Commission meeting and hope to be approved to start construction in April or May.

ReStore Volunteer Spotlights
Mark Lowis
Mark Lowis (left) moved from Green Bay
in 2008 to marry his sweetheart, Melanie.
As a semi-retired computer expert, he
wanted to find a way to connect with his
new community, and he says that he has
made wonderful connections through his
volunteer experience with Habitat. Now,
with a blended family and 9 grandchildren
in the picture, you would think he would
have enough on his plate, but he says he
has found a great deal of joy working with
the customers and other volunteers (like
Zach!). Mark loves helping with merchan-
dising and customer service, and encour-
aging donations. For our part, we are hap-
py and grateful to have Mark on our team,
helping to build homes, communities and
hope through his service in our ReStore.
Gerry Brunner
The Plymouth ReStore’s beautiful new
truck needed a beautiful new driver, and
we found a gem in Gerry Brunner! Gerry
drove a semi-truck for 41 years, but retired
4 years ago. He and his wife have lived
just outside of Greenbush for the past 37
years, have two grown children and 5
grandchildren. About two months ago he
made an innocent, un-suspecting visit to
the ReStore, and when Manager Dennis
Voelker overheard him saying that he had
driven truck, Dennis wasted no time in
pouncing! Fortunately for all of us, Gerry
said yes! He has been driving our “sweet
little truck” (Gerry’s words) for two
months now. We deeply appreciate his
time & effort, and hope he stays with us a
long time!
It’s with our greatest sympa-
thy that we announce one of
our longtime volunteers, Milt
Chase, has passed. Milt vol-
unteered with the Ozaukee
Chapter for years and was an
amazing asset to their team.
It’s truly inspiring how much
spirit and success Milt brought
to the chapter, all after he
turned 75 years old.
He volunteered as a project
leader on 5 homes and 2
ABWK projects, connected
Habitat with hundreds of cash
and in-kind donations, ar-
ranged the donation of a
home (resold for a profit suffi-
cient to build an 8th home in
Port), and his personal favor-
ite, created the “Sanford &
Son Team.” Milt would team
up with another volunteer,
take the truck and pick-up
donations of building materi-
als anywhere in Oz. County to
be used in new builds or sold
at Lakeside’s ReStores.
Milt was widely respected in
the Ozaukee Chapter and was
a positive influence on each
and every person he met.
