Habitat 67, Montreal, Canada, 1967, Prefabricated units for living

It’s a multi-leveled residential modules on five different stories and was built in 1967. It took three

years to develop (1964-67) and cost $17 million Canadian. The total area of the property comprises

22,160 sq. m. (238,500 sq ft).The whole complex is created by 354 construction modules

connected to create 158 residences. The sizes of those residences can range from 600 square foot

one bedroom apartments, to 1,800 square foot four bedroom ones. In total, the whole of Habitat

’67 encompasses 15 different housing types. Set in its own modular placement, almost like a tetris,

each residence has its own roof garden.

Canada Winter Games Housing

It was built at 2007 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada with the combination of stick-built construction

with factory built modular units. It has three stories and 141 module complex. The modules were

manufactured off-site at ATCO’s Calgary manufacturing plant and shipped to Whitehorse for final

assembly. It’s 146,000 Sq.ft. and was built for Special events, Education and Seniors Housing.

Multi-story Modular Apartments Rising in Regina, Saskatchewan

Sky Harbour Estates is a multi-unit modular apartment project which contain 314 units. The

modular units are made in the U.S. and shipped as individual modules to the site. Each module is

then shipped separately and each is a full unit with floor, roof and walls - both interior and exterior.

World’s tallest modular residential high-rise

It’s the first 32-story tower, located in New York city, which include 363 rental apartments and costs $4.9

billion. Manufacturer(FCS modular) says, time to load an apartment is 30 minutes and from the first cut of

The nine story apartment building that went up in 5 days

Location: Melbourne, Australia

There is a precast concrete core that include stairs, elevators, and provides horizontal stability.

Ruth lake lodge

Its located in 26Km north of Fort McMurray in Alberta. This lodge has a lot of amenities with 604

rooms and includes restaurant, conference and training facility, workout facility and so on. The

Company responsible for the project is BCT Structure and it’s head office is in Lethbridge, Alberta.

The gross size of project is 232,000 square feet and took 319 days to be completed. It was selected

as the best Modular project in Modular Building Institute. It consists of 235 modules joined with

panelized construction in the center core and has excellent architectural features.

Premier Inn Hotel & Multi Story Car Park Built CIMC Modules in Hull, UK

At first project required a seven-story car park using a steel frame structure with composite concrete flooring

and then the contractor utilized a modular system to produce a six-story hotel on top of the car park.(Augest

2009): Number of Floors: 9, Number of Modules: 86, Number of Bedrooms: 125.Three different room sizes

is used in this hotel resulting in different sized modules to suit each type. In plan, it is non-linear in geometry

however by using a combination of different sized modules and integrated steel-frame design the hotel was

completed to exactly match the planning design.

Europe's tallest Modular Building

It’s a 24-storey student dormitory building in the Manchester, UK with a 34$million cost. It has

805 modules and is supposed to be built in 27 weeks. The main factor which has led to using

modular construction method is time. This method of construction not only reduces time on site,

but will allow Victoria Hall to generate revenues ahead of their anticipated programme. Other

The core of the building which include centralized utilities, fire stairs, elevators are site built with

concrete. Each module has it’s own structural steel frame to carry the loads from above modules.

The modules weigh 21 to 29 tons and are placed by crane and then are arranged on top of the prior

story and attached to the concrete core. Finally frames are spot welded to create a unified structural

mosaic.

Tall modular buildings always have a difficulty that the units are never completely identical ,as

you go higher, you are supporting less load and the walls could be thinner. At Moshe Saftie's

Habitat 67, in Montreal, the top modules were as strong and heavy as the bottom ones so that they

could all come out of the same molds and it could entail more expense. This project has steel

framed modules, which can easily be built more lighter as they get higher.

28-unit modular building in New York City
