stupa which is inconceivable merits multiplied by ten million. For example, if you are building a five-story stupa, you receive the benefit of having built ten million five-story stupas. It is important to recite this mantra before you begin the work on building the stupa, but also you can recite the mantra every day during the construction of a stupa. It is the same for statues and tsa-tsas.

By reciting this mantra, if you touch any element (fire, water, air, earth), the elements are blessed. Then when those elements touch any being, that sentient being is liberated double the power of a stupa and purified of their five uninterrupted negative karmas. This means if you recite this mantra and then swim in the water, the water is blessed and becomes so powerful. When the water touches any sentient being, including those living in the water numberless insects and creatures from the largest whale to the tiniest insect that can be seen through a microscope, and even the human beings who are diving and playing in the water, they all are liberated from negative karma by the water touching their bodies. It’s the same for the rest of the elements. They have so much power to purify other sentient beings.

By reciting this mantra, you become meaningful to behold - even more powerful than a stupa. You become more powerful to liberate others and anybody who sees you or touches you, their negative karma is purified, twice as powerfully as a stupa.

By reciting this mantra, if you do massage, it becomes so beneficial because when you touch other people’s bodies, your touch purifies them.

By reciting this mantra, anybody who sees you is liberated from the lower realms and their five uninterrupted negative karmas are purified; no question about the ten non-virtuous actions. This means even if you are walking on the street, or in a department store, at the train station, anywhere where there are a lot of people, even if you have no other purpose, just walking around purifies sentient beings’ minds, because you have recited this mantra. You could do some strange thing, like make a strange noise, so that everybody looks at you. Just by that they are purified.

This mantra can be recited a few times at the beginning of each day along with the other morning prayers and mantras, as well as before making statues, stupas or tsa-tsas.

People who could use this mantra to benefit others: anyone who is seen by people or who touches people or animals, such as performers, models, public speakers, teachers, nurses, doctors, or veterinarians, etc. Anyone who touches objects or elements that other sentient beings will see or touch, such as cooks, bakers, potters, artists, painters, factory workers, dry cleaners, swimmers, etc. In this way, it is the same as the Zung of the Completely Pure Stainless Light.

After months of activity to complete the organisation and logistics of getting Jangsem Ling building in order, we are now fi nally able to start a Dharma program in Jangsem Ling under the guidance of Ven.Palzang. Venerable’s presence in Jangsem Ling is indeed a great blessing to the local people of Triang. Venerable speaks perfect mandarin which enables him to communicate directly with the local Chinese there; he has good Dharma understanding which can guide the people to learn more about Buddhism and its practices. In October, Venerable started conducting Medicine Buddha Puja, Tara Puja, Recitation of Sanghata Sutra, Guru Puja and Animal Liberation practices. The one day visit from Dagri Rinpoche on 18th Oct where Rinpoche performed Guru Puja and Protector Puja to bless Jangsem Ling was a special occasion for the people of Triang and all those present. On 3rd - 4th November, Venerable will be leading a Tara Retreat in Jangsem Ling, and on the 9th Nov. there will be Medicine Buddha Puja. Anyone wishing to join the retreat please call LDC directly. Everyone is most welcome to join the activities organised for Jangsem Ling and it is hoped that we are able to organise yet more Dharma activities in this beautiful hill retreat center of LDC. If you need accommodation to stay in

October review

Thousand Offering Event

Days after the 1000 offering 3 day event held at the Chinese Assembly Hall, my mind was still swarming with thoughts of all the incredible positive energy, tremendous kindness shown, the genuine love for the GURU and fellow human kind, the unselfish devotion to do good and benefit others and all manifestation of our true and pure nature of love and compassion by all who were there to serve and to participate at the event.

Apart from the enthusiastic and passionate display of unleashed energy to cohesively transform our bodies and mind to serve and benefit others (ultimately to serve and carry out the mission of our Guru and his teachings), the level of forbearance and understanding fostered were abundantly experienced!

People from all walks of life, members as well as non members, whether giving their hearts and soul by functioning as the cogs and wheels of the event OR generously donating toward the costs of the events OR doing both at the same time, I was totally overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity unfolding in front of my eyes started before the actual day and even after………….!

CAUSE FOR REJOICINGI just cannot help but REJOICE every minute when I recall and remember all the acts of kindness, patience, generous giving of monies and tireless efforts that I believed must have been manifested by all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who were always by our sides throughout, before and after the 1000 offerings !!!

To all of you kind souls, you made me feel so proud to be human …… !!! like one member who kept rejoicing every day during the event, thinking HOW MUCH the visitors must have benefited by sitting at the desk and writing the Sanghata Sutra, by offering gold coins to the 21 Taras, by bowing and circumambulating the Buddhas’ relics, by turning the wheels with billions of mantras, and by not forgetting the millions of lives liberated at the animal liberation on the third day morning that had been sponsored by the visitors to the event.

MOTIVATIONMany among us may not have had the perfect motivation for being at the event or for making any of the offerings to Buddha (and here I am specifically referring to myself) but in my heart I know that the Great Compassionate One would have showered us with

How can we repay your kindness?

6 Shabda ~ November 2005 ~

The Most Venerable, Great Compassionate and Affable Dagri Rinpoche Our annual thousand offering event was made incredibly more auspicious this year with the presence of a very very special being as our hosting master - the most lovable and highly respected incarnate Lama, Venerable Dagri Rinpoche, who is recognised by HH the Dalai Lama as a reincarnation of one of the 16 Arhats. For anyone who had the great good fortune to make contact with or lay eyes on Rinpoche they are sure to recall his smiling eyes and great compassionate laughter. Rinpoche was always gentle and patient as he tried to understand our verbal communication. Many of us tried to speak Mandarin to him due to his knowledge in this language.

Throughout the 10 days (from 11th October to the 20th) that Rinpoche was with us here at LDC. Rinpoche presided over empowerment and pujas for three solid days from 9am to 9pm at the Chinese Assembly Hall. In between rest periods, Rinpoche tirelessly met with those who wanted to meet him and many visitors were able to squeeze in for some personal blessings and consultations with him.

blessings to ensure that we receive so much merit on those three days. This probably explains my feeling of walking on clouds for days after the event and every time when I think of all the faces and all things happening during the three days!!!

THANK YOUWe might not have been able to thank each and everyone for all the love and kindness bestowed on us and the Center for this great happening, may I just say that, having the Buddha inside your heart, and having participated in any way your have done, may you receive all the blessings of the Triple Gem and be able to generate the thought of NO NEED in your mind. We thank most of all with our hearts the most Venerable Dagri Rinpoche who so kindly officiated through the three days. His presence at the event was truly wonderful as he led us through pujas and mantra chanting which made the hall resonate with the presence of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from the ten directions. Many of us also felt the presence of our most precious root guru, Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, our most precious Lord of refuge.

In addition Rinpoche attended an interview with several national Chinese daily newspapers and comforted to volunteers and stayed lying on the beds for blood donation drive at the event.

Members and non members were extremely blessed as Rinpoche also accepted invitations to perform special house pujas and personal blessings as well as consultation made with Rinpoche personally. Despite his busy programme, Rinpoche was even able to visit our retreat center in Triang, Pahang, where a sangha from Singapore, is currently doing retreat. With his great compassion to benefi t more beings, Rinpoche surprised all attendees during the Medicine Buddha Puja at the event by leading everyone to circumambulate the hall with a lighted candle in hand chanting the Medicine Buddha mantra. The resounding benefi ts were so tremendous where feedback came the next day that those who had headache and minor complaints the day before experienced complete cures! We are so very very fortunate indeed to be able to receive the showers of blessings from such an endearing and humble Rinpoche.

The beautiful and memorable imprints left behind by Rinpoche’s true qualities and the wonderful sense of humour and friendliness extended by his attendant Ven.Tenzin la, Geshe

Jamphel and translator Ven.Namgyal will remain in our hearts and mind for a long time to come. We pray we have the good karma to have Rinpoche back again soon.

Venerable Dagri Rinpoche

8 Shabda ~ November 2005 ~

LEARNING THE RITUAL PRACTICESSeptember and October have been packed with learning ritual practices led by Ven.Lhundup Sherab. Many of you by now have learned the proper way to hold the dorje and ring the bell at pujas, to perform the magical hand mudras and to chant the different pujas in the correct and traditional Tibetan way. You would also have learnt about the meanings of tormas and how to make them and of course we have all learned how to perform the Dorje Khadro Fire Puja practices.

Before Ven.Lhundup Sherab leaves us to return to Kopan Monastery in mid November, there will be additional sessions on How to make Tea Offering to Dharma protectors – this will be on 8th November at 7pm. The practice of protectors is a very vital part of tantric practice and is especially beneficial when incorporated into our daily practice.

After such an interesting time learning the ritual practices, what have we planned for the coming month of November? Well the great news is that we will have a very special friend with us this November. Those who know him love his great knowledge and the wonderful way he imparts it – those who do not know him, well believe us when you do you will be inspired by his great humility and his great knowledge as well … he is none other than Ven. Tenzin Zopa

HIGHLIGHT in NOVEMBERVen.Tenzin ZopaA very talented, down to earth, righteous and serious practitioner yet so humble student of Lama Zopa Rinpoche and for many years, the heart attendant

of the incomparable Geshe Lama Konchog. A top debater in his senior philosophy class in Sera Monastery where lived amongst 3000 monks.

Venerable was born 1975 in Tsum village, a remote place in the region of Nepal. Since young Venerable was under the care of Geshe Lama Konchog. Geshe la is no different than Venerable’s own father. The kindness Geshe la showered on him, the lineage practices Geshe la passed on to him, the knowledge, wisdom, quality and various skill of Geshe la have now inherited by Venerable Tenzin Zopa.

Venerable has every potential to help anyone who comes to him, yet when he comes in front of his Guru, his devotion and service to the guru reveal the true quality of his humbleness.

Venerable Tenzin Zopa kindly accepted LDC’s invitation to come to Malaysiato conduct teaching for a month, follow by leading a tour to Kopan Monastery and Kathmandu on 6th-16th December 2005. Venerable’s visit to Malaysia to teach was approved by Khenrinpoche Lama Lhundup.

“ I am so happy that Tenzin Zopa is coming to LDC to teach ... Tenzin

Zopa is second Buddha... is second Geshe Lama Konchog... he knows all the things that Geshe la taught

him... he got all the experience and knowledge ... very capable....

very good monk ... “Lama Lhundup KhenRinpoche,

Abbot of Kopan Moanstery

Venerable will be conducting classes on 6 Preparatory Practices, Introduction on Buddhist Tenets and a brief overview on the Ground and Path to Enlightenment. While Ven.Osel was discussing on the different subjects to teach at LDC, Venerable mentioned that it is very important for us to be familiar with the 6 Preparatory Practices. He said, “Many of us neglect the Preparatory Practices yet it is the most important part and we have to pay attention to it before any of our other practices.” Venerable received the teaching on this subject directly from Dema Locho Rinpoche and Geshe Lama Konchog. When Venerable teaches this subject, he will also incorporate the Lam Rim teachings.

Venerable will also be teaching an Introduction on Buddhist Tenets which will explore the different schools of Buddhism. He will explain the different doctrines propounded that lead to different results of the practice.

Finally Venerable will give us an overview of the Ground and Path to Enlightenment. This subject will open

our eyes to see how near we are toward Enlightenment ! Or maybe how far we are! The Ground and Path shows us the different qualities of a being when they reach the different levels of achievement in their practice. No one should miss this as it will be a very inspiring teaching.

BUT ALSO TAKE NOTE …Even after knowing ritual practices and Buddhist principals, we will definitely not accomplish any results without relying properly on our spiritual friend - our most precious Guru. This month Ven.Tenzin Zopa will lead us to do our monthly Guru Puja in an extensive version as advised by Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

Lama Zopa Rinpoche said, “All the ancient yogis like Naropa, Tilopa, and Saraha; the Tibetan yogis like Milarepa and Gyalwa Ensapa; and yogis of other countries like China and Nepal achieved enlightenment in one short life time, in a matter of years. They were able to do this because of the strongest practice of Guru Puja- devoting to the guru and cherishing the guru more than one’s life. Guru puja is a very rich practice.”

So in November to be enriched by the teachings on Buddhist philosophy (which many of us have waited for, for so long) and to be able to participate in the extensive version of Guru Puja – it is indeed so very precious as these practices will surely bring us a little bit closer to Enlightenment. See you at LDC!

We have so far completed the discussion on the two scopes, namely, the small and medium scopes. There are about 15 to 18 regular members who attend the Lam Rim discussion weekly.

On special Lord Buddha days, different activities to purify negativities and increase merits are conducted, such as:

• Recitation of sutras such as Sanghata Sutra and Golden Light Sutra• Prostration to 35 Buddhas and 7 Medicine Buddhas• Shakyamuni Buddha puja

Past ActivitiesHighlight of past activities include:

• Visit of the Most Venerable Dagri Rinpoche, who recently visited and gave four important teachings, namely, the Twelve Limbs of Dependent Origination, Guru Devotion, Karma and its Results, Meditation on Love and Compassion. Rinpoche also conducted Medicine Buddha puja and Tara puja

Kasih HospiceOn Sept 11,Kasih Hospice Care Society held the 13th Basic Hospice Volunteers Training Course (4th in Mandarin). There were 31 participants and 13 signed up as volunteers. The new volunteers had an orientation visit to Selayang Hospital Pallative ward the week after. They will join the existing 39 volunteers to do hospital visits at one of the 3 hospitals (Selayang hospital, KLH Cancer ward and Sg Buloh Hospital Aids Ward and Leprosy Ward).

During the monthly debriefing session, we again shared the joy of volunteers, their sense of fulfillment, of happiness to able to serve others. We also learnt that it was important to know some background of the patient first before we can serve them well, at least to understand what the sick person needs most.

When facing a patient who is fearful of dying, volunteers can help encourage patient to live at this moment, live now and not to anticipate what is to come in the future or worried about the past. When a person lives at this moment, there is no fear or worry. Volunteers can help lead the sick person’s mind from being negative, fearful, or angry to a more positive state of mind.

When visiting patient, volunteer can encourage patient to write down their own prayer. Patients can write down their wishes in the form of prayer. The fundamental meaning of praying is

Page 12: habda - Buddhism | Tibetan Buddhismpure nature of love and compassion by all who were there to serve and to participate at the event. Apart from the enthusiastic and passionate display

12 Shabda ~ November 2005 ~

When we help people, we can give advice or provide options. But eventually it is them who will have to make the decision and to take the step. Whether they get help or not, is up to them, not up to us.

actually an action that transforms negative to positive thoughts. It is thus better to do prayers that the patient can relate to. It could be well wishes for the family or pets.

Using universal language and skillful means is stressed in services provided by KHC volunteers. It is not necessary to use Buddhist terms yet we are able to impart dharma. One of the volunteers shared an encounter she had with a Malay Aids patient. During the conversation, this patient has expressed regret on the wrong done in the past. The volunteer asked what was he going to do about it. The discussion then went along the purification practice of the 4 opponent powers i.e. regret , refuge, resolution / actual practice and remedy/ promise not to repeat the wrong action. The patient felt relieved that he could pray and asked for forgiveness from Allah and vowed never to repeat the same mistake again. However, he told the volunteer though he wanted to make a change in his life, but he felt it was too late as he was bedridden and terminally ill. The volunteer encouraged him to have positive thought and wishes other well, though one’s body is weak, but one’s mind can be strong and fill with love. Volunteer could see the sudden sparkle in the eyes of patient.

Kasih Hospice Care Society is a hospice service based on Buddhist principles

of love, compassion and universal responsibility. Since Buddha’s teaching is the ultimate path to eliminating suffering, should we then share Buddha’s teaching to all the patients we come in contact with? Well, not everyone is ready for dharma. If given without skillful means, we may cause irritation and more delusion. However, our volunteers are encouraged to use skillful means and universal language while providing care. We can use terms that convey the same meaning as Buddhist terms. However, when patients request for dharma, we can then talk about it. It is important not to confuse and create fear to a sick patient with any beliefs that he/she is not familiar with. If the sick patients have religious belief other than Buddhism, we can encourage them to have strong faith in their own belief. When ones’ mind is focused on a faith, it will give rise to positive thoughts and allays fears. As volunteers we should never impose our spiritual beliefs onto patients. Our role in aiding spiritual healing is that of support, not conversion. What the sick patient needs is our respect and in our accepting who they are, and not what we want of them.
