Dear colleagues,

On behalf of the HAABE Executive Board, I would like to welcome you to the 31st Annual Bilingual/ESL Teacher of the Year Banquet.

HAABE’s main purpose is to recognize excellence in teaching. We realize that teacher appreciation is an important component in schools that promotes the achievement of linguistically diverse students.

Inevitable, there seems to be a correlation between teachers who feel valued and their students performance. HAABE recognizes that teachers who feel valued tend to have a positive effect in their students academic performance. Ultimately student achievement is the main driving force in our schools.

Bilingual and ESL education is more than a privilege; it is a necessity for the new generations who will be competing for jobs in a global society. Bilingualism and bi-literacy is a lifelong asset that benefits everyone.

I want to thank everyone who made this celebration possible: selection committee members, sponsors, school districts superintendents, administrators, principals, bilingual and ESL educators, scholarship recipients, and our families. Thank you for believing in our associations’ purpose. Please continue to support HAABE so that we can continue to acknowledge our outstanding bilingual and ESL teachers of the Houston!

Master of Ceremonies: Martín BerlangaIn November 2012, Not ic iero Telemundo Houston welcomed back Martin Berlanga, as a key m e m b e r o f t h e i r newscast. Previously, Ber langa served as Anchor and C o r r e s p o n d e n t o f Noticiero Univision from 1996 to 2012. In this role, he was the main Anchor for Univision’s weekend network newscast and

anchored news segments for “Tu Desayuno Alegre,” the network’s morning show.

Berlanga covered the 2012 presidential elections and the 2008 Republican and Democratic National Conventions, as well as several electoral events in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Illinois, Arizona and New Mexico in 2010. Berlanga also served as Univision’s Texas Correspondent and as Producer during their September 11th coverage from New York and Washington D.C in 2001.

Prior to his post at Univision, Berlanga served as news Anchor and Writer for KXYZ Radio 13 in Houston. Additionally, he became KTMD Telemundo’s Reporter for Marcelo Marini and special programs in 1994.

In 1992, Berlanga became Co-Anchor of Multimedios Monterrey’s Telediario in Mexico. He wrote and announced newscasts for 16 radio stations and was a News Anchor for XEAW Radio. He also was the News Anchor and Producer at XHAD Channel 7 in Coahuila, Mexico from 1990 to 1992, where he hosted television contests, musicals and talent shows.

From 1989 to 1990, Berlanga produced and hosted Jaubert Tafich Radio’s “Hablemos Claro” show in Coahuila, Mexico. He began his career in 1987 as a Radio Announcer for Radio Lobo Cuauhtémoc in Chihuahua Mexico. Berlanga received a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from the Autonomous University of Coahuila in Mexico.
