Why FET open: •  no restriction on research area •  long term, high risk, •  interdisciplinary •  great flexibility (positions, equipment, …) à One of the few EC funding opportunities for blue skies research

How we (!) wrote an FET open grant …

Email to collaborators on day of submission (30/09/14): … Now, if we get it is another matter - FETs are a lottery. I think the proposal will score above 85% and will probably be in the top 20% of all submissions. But that's not good enough, to get funding we need to be in the 95% region. Whether we do, will depend on things like - does a reviewer think our proposal is revolutionary enough - or whacky enough as my EU expert calls it! This depends on individual reviewers and thus on luck, really! …

634 proposals received … 254 above threshold …24 funded = 3.8% (9.4%)

Criterion 1: Excellence – 60% (5/5)Criterion 2: Impact – 20% (4.5/5)Criterion 3: Implementation – 20% (4/5)

Overall: 4.7/5 (94% of marks)

Our Results: ✔

An interdisciplinary, Nottingham-led, consortium of mathematicians, physicists and electrical engineers will provide the design tools for wireless Chip-to-Chip (C2C) communication, which will be essential for this future technology.

Electronic devices of the future will use wireless communication down to the chip level.

The scientific challenges will be tackled with the help of substantial funding from Horizon 2020, amounting in total to 3.4 Mio Euros.
