Et en Plus...Nous Parlons Français!

Members of the level 2 and 3H French classes are using the Innovation Center and an

educational App called Flipgrid to work on speaking French in relevant, everyday settings.

This week, groups spoke extemporaneously on a favorite topic, planning a party! Students

are working toward more fluent conversational French in preparation for their 2020 trip to

Quebec & Montreal Canada and the NJ State Seal of Biliteracy Test!

Sketchnoting in the Innovation Center

Sketchnoting (or visual notetaking) is the combination of images and text to create visually stimulating notes. There's all kinds of evidence for using them: 1. Hand-written notes can be powerful for long-term memory and comprehension. 2. Keeping your hands busy drawing can improve memory and keep you engaged. 3. Pairing images and text together helps ideas stick.

One of the many ways it can be used is to create a review sheet or a reference sheet for something frequently referred to in class. For example Ms. Apryasz's classes created a sketchnote of the Scientific Method. Here are a few examples from her students:

Another good use would be after a VR trip or something similar, for students to show visually what they learned/understood/found interesting. Please let Mrs. Morstatt know if you'd like to bring your classes to the IC for this workshop. In addition she is available for Virtual Reality Trips and various workshops.

Interactive Mystery Dinner

The class of 2022 held the first interactive mystery dinner on January 29th. Faculty,

students, family, and friends had to work together to figure out who commited the crime

while eating a tasty dinner! We can’t wait to see what next year’s mystery will hold!

MRHS 2019 Yearbook Selected as Best of the Best!

Congratulations to Franklin Ruiz and Tymir Sinclair for their hard work on the 2019 MRHS

Echoes Yearbook. It has been selected as part of the Herff Jones Portfolio, which

showcases best-in-class yearbook work from students across the country! Their Portfolio

is considered the "best of the best" and out of the thousands of school yearbooks Herff

Tomorrow’s Teachers Game Day

Students in the Tomorrow’s Teachers Program were tasked with creating a card or board

game. Games could be new or a modified existing game. Students were required to create

rules, provide written directions and make sure games were age appropriate to their

intended audience. Designers learned the importance of creativity and communication as

well as learning or teaching an existing or new skill. Students found this to be a great way

to build and/or strengthen a relationship. Special Thanks to Ms. Nobile, Ms. Ferretti and

Gifted and Talented Competes in Quiz Bowl!

On Thursday, January 23, freshmen and sophomores competed in a Quiz Bowl versus Passaic County Tech and Hawthorne High School. The participants competed against teams from Passaic County Tech and Hawthorne High School at Passaic County Tech. Team MRHS came in third place at the Quiz Bowl. After the Quiz Bowl, the three schools took part in an engineering challenge where they had to create a ferris wheel using supplies such as popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, cups, straws, a piece of plywood, among other materials. Students had to make sure their ferris wheel could stand by itself and spin as well.

Interact Club Engages In Team Building

Each week the Interact Club - where students Make a Difference - meet to accomplish many

things. Always looking for ways to help the Manchester community - help others - make friends

with those who seem to stay to themselves and learn about leadership. During last week’s

activity they learned how to work well with others and figure out solutions for problems. They

each other to be truly successful.

Interact Club Visits Golden Age Club

The Interact Club visits the seniors at the North Haledon Golden Age Club. They regularly

provide snacks for the seniors, treats during the holidays and dance performances for Cinco de

Mayo. The students leave with such a sense of having done something of value, having been

part of something that is bigger than themselves; and the seniors are always super excited for

the visits. It is definitely a give and take relationship. Our students often say that they have

learned a greater appreciation for their own grandparents. We are never short on volunteers

and an afternoon with Frank Sinatra!
